Well, I usually play on Hard, so i play very cautiously. When i'm supposed to defend a certain position, and the game gives me a lot of time/no time limit to prepare myself, I use what the map gives me (boxes, barrels, etc) to make a makeshift barricade, with a gravity gun or not.
