Half-Life: Abridged All-Stars – Map Labs #12

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

After the rousing success of Half-Life: Abridged, the Map Labs crew ran a broader challenge to abridge popular Half-Life mods instead of the official games. The list of mods available to entrants was huge (too long to list here!) but it covered a wide variety of HL1 mods, HL2 mods, and even several small and single-map mods.

So here’s Abridged All-Stars, with 11 entrants!

Half-Life: Eternal – Map Labs Test Tube #16

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

A simple challenge for this Test Tube (short competition): make a map inspired by the Doom series. Any Doom media was on the table – games, films (ugh), even novelizations?! As long as it oozed DOOM, the authors could make whatever they wanted.

Rip & Crowbar! Enjoy the 7 maps! And the absolutely superb introduction & background map by beefbacon, featuring the vocal talents of Gianni Matragrano, and music by Dee Leggett!

Half-Life Decay: Solo Mission (Demo 1)

for Half-Life

Decay: Solo Mission a ground-up port of Half-Life: Decay that allows for seamless single-player gameplay in place of the original co-op. But it’ll also have fixes, more detail, and polishing where warranted for an improved experience.

This is a demo featuring about 20-30 minutes worth of gameplay and is taken from the opening chapters Dual Access and Hazardous Course.

To see in-progress screenshots and learn more about the full version of Decay: Solo Mission, visit the ModDB page, follow the author on Twitter, and check out Mr. Floyd’s Patreon.

Open Question 001 – Why do you think Valve haven’t released Half-Life 3?

My Goodness! How long has it been since the last release of an official half-Life game? Too long, that’s for sure.

We all know how hard it is to start something again after we have taken a break – going back to school after the summer (teachers as well as students!), starting a new diet after eating whatever we want or doing exercise after lazing on the sofa for months.

It can’t be much different for Valve and let’s not forget that Valve back then and Valve now are very different. Different people, different objectives and different priorities.

There’s also the Duke Nukem effect. The longer you leave it, the greater the expectation.

So, what do you think is the reason for the lack of Half-Life 3?

Half-Life Art – October 2017

As readers may know, starting in October 2017 I am really trying to use Twitter to promote the site and its content.

Part of that is a daily series of tweets that inlcude one Half-Life related image.

Searching Twitter is actually pretty hard and not all the tweets appear, so I have decided for the Half-Life Art and maybe a few other tweet series, I will be creating archives on the content/tweets. Here is the first one.

I like the idea of running a monthly poll but I can’t guarantee I will do it each and every month. The poll is at the end of the page.

Please feel free to comment on your favourite piece of art.

Each Image is a link to the relevant page.

Poll Question 351 – Would you ever play Half-Life games on your mobile or tablet?

Now that Steam is available on mobile Windows devices I started thinking about all the Half-Life games I had seen on Android, which lead me onto whether I would actually want to play Half-Life games on my mobile (I can’t, I have an iPhone – at least I don’t THINK I can) or a tablet (I can’t, I’m sure this time because I don’t have a tablet! Ha – gotcha.).

I know that desktop usage among non-business users is dropping significantly and mobile and tablet is soaring but there are some things better done on Desktops. I’m not suggesting that games HAVE to be better on desktops but some games work better there, just like some films HAVE to be seen in the cinema to really appreciate them. I’m sure you get what I mean.

The future could easily be VR goggles wirelessly connected to your mobile/tablet – who knows?

I don’t want you to think I am some old fuddy-duddy, I have played games on my mobile but only a couple. Mostly Dumb Ways to Die

I’d love to hear your thoughts on mobile gaming in general and specifically to FPS games like Half-Life.

Poll Question 341 – Would you go on a Half-Life themed cruise?

Just a sill question this time, but after reading a BBC article called Whatever floats your boat – the unstoppable growth of themed cruises and how the band KISS hires a whole cruise ship once a year, I thought Heck, why not Half-Life?

The topic itself isn’t exactly new, in fact I suggested something similar an article called Ten-Year Anniversary Half-Life Convention (2007) and even Poll Question 244 asked If there was a ValveCon within 6 hours travel of you, would you go? (2011).

Let’s Have Some Fun

So besides the basic question, I want you all to suggest fun activities the passengers could all get up to. Keep it clean and family friendly. I’ll post some ideas as comments too.

Poll Question 321 – Has it been more than half your life from HL1 to now?

A few days ago on the HalfLife SubReddit quimralho asked Why is the game called Half-Life? What is the relation of the title and the game?

It’s a question that is often asked, by new and seasoned players alike. Most often people talk about the decay of radioactivity etc but it doesn’t really address the question.

However, this time scriminamp got right to the heart of the issue with a very funny, and quite sad really, answer.

The game is called half-life because it takes half your f*%king life for a squeal to come out.

It was then suggested by Don that this would make a good poll question, so here it is.
