    Maybe?

Single area map. Continuously spawning zombies. Lots of weapons and buddies. Its a zombie frag fest! One of those “aggression reliever” mods. Some good bits of design dotted about.

With a name like Zombies and the fact that this is for Opposing Force, it’s easy to guess what this map is all about. That’s right, an army of friendly Marines versus an army of…zombies! And of course, you play as one of those Marines.

That said, this map is fun for about 10 to 20 minutes, because that’s all it’s good for. It’s a diversion, plain and simple. The scenario is simple—a small army of Marines all in defensive positions retaliating against zombies that endlessly spawn in. Some decent level design, at least in the small amount of architecture on the map, but otherwise unimpressive since it’s all set in a boxy area about the size of two football fields side-by-side. Watch out for the atrocious r_speeds too…frame rate was clunky on my Pentium III 600.

While there’s an amazing variety of weapons available for you to tinker around with, including the spore launcher, M249 SAW, and sniper rifle, there’s only so much to do given the extremely limited playability. If it alternated spawning sessions between zombies and pit drones (or something else with some actual challenge) that might be reason enough to play, but as it is, any fun you might start to have will quickly become transient.

There’s actually more to this than meets the eye, but not much. The biggest issues is the simple mechanic of the spawning zombies. if the layout was a little less box like and the zombies spawn from multiple directions then this might be fun.

I have to admit to being surprised that the Ten Four review said it was fun for “10 to 20 minutes”.

I got bored way before that. I spent most of my time collecting the weapons.

Unless you like the challenge of lasting as long as possible then avoid this. I don’t know if the ammo ever runs out but the spore launcher and the two mounted guns don’t.

    Think Twice

I am ashamed of the length of time I did play this map. While I’ve played worse normal maps, as killboxes go this one is moderately entertaining, at least layout-wise. You get weapons and mounted guns and the spore launcher, and a bunch of squad mates, all spread out in the map. Unfortunately it’s still a big box but you also get the long jump pack so it’s simple to move around quickly.

But what makes this boring isn’t the layout or the weapons – it’s the enemies. All you get are normal zombies, about 8 at a time, ad infinitum. It might have worked if there were enemy variation.

I certainly didn’t think it was fun for the whole time. Things got more interesting when I intentionally killed one of my squad mates, then it got a bit challenging for a minute or so while I took out all of the Marines. Then it was just me and Otis chillin.

  5. Avoid It!

This map consists of boring, endless, purposeless killing. The zombies spawn from the air wave after wave.

The design is not bad, but it’s spoiled by flat cliffs. There is interesting exploration, but it cannot redeem the boring gameplay.

Also features: stretched door texture, magically hanging in the air ammo givers for 7th weapon, toolbox which lets you stand on the air, random airstrikes which attempt to improve the gameplay by making it more various but fail since there’s nothing to improve.

  6. Avoid It!

This isn’t a game, but it would make for a good screensaver!

After about 2mins (max) it becomes clear that you don’t have to do anything, all of the troops and the single Barney outside are in safe positions. They, without any help from you take out each wave of zombies.

Actual playtime for this was around 3-5mins before getting bored and finding somewhere to watch the endless kill zombies/respawn zombies/kill zombies/respawn zombies etc, etc.

  7. Avoid It!

Looking down the reviews I sighed, but played anyway in the hope there would be something of interest.

Literally all there is to this map is half a dozen zombies that spawn in over and over. At least some effort has been put into creating some barricades and providing weapons but the squad NPCs can handle all the zombies without any input from you.

If this map had progressive waves of enemies and perhaps some kind of progress meter, it might actually be worth playing. As it stands… stay away!

    Avoid It!

I guess this should have been better conssidering this is an arena, with many grunts along on ur side this would have been so much more entretaining if bunch of xeninan and reace x aliens would be in the arena putting a reall hell battle, just to put zombies in it is stupid is like killing krickets in a pot just like that….

The arena was so well designed in the defending positions that even some cool mounted mach guns that I love were there even u can call for bombs to support you so just to put zombies in that area is stupid.

  9. Play It Later

If you take this map for what it is, a mindless never-ending slaughter map, then it’s great fun. You are supplied with plentiful ammo and squadmates at your disposal. R_speed’s are kind of shit though.

  10. Avoid It!

Yeah, there’s not much to say about this map. If you find it fun to kill hordes and hordes of the same enemy then good for you. But the lack of variety makes everything too dull and boring.
