Zay 1, 2 and 3

for Half-Life 2

3rd June 2007

About

This is a collection of Doom/Quake-style maps. There is no story and the objectives are to simply move onto the next room. The maps were originally released separately but I have collected them into one file. Play time is around 5 to 10 minutes for each map.

Installation

Copy the .bsp files into your Maps folder of your HL2 installation. Open the console and type map zay1, replacing the number with the number of the map you want to play. Once you type the first few letters, there should be a drop-down list of available maps for you to choose from.

Author’s Note for Zay 1

A short Quake/Doom style SP map. The only objective is to be entertaining. Enjoy.

Author’s Note for Zay 2

Another short Quake/Doom style SP map. As before, the only objective is to be entertaining. I’ve learned a bit since zay1, so it should be more entertaining. Enjoy.

Author’s Note for Zay 3

Yet another short Quake/Doom style SP map. As before, the only objective is to be entertaining. Enjoy.

  1. Phillip says Play It!

I enjoyed these maps, which is very unusual because normally I hate this type. There was one invisible enemy that really frustrated me but when I went around the second time to get the screenshots it didn’t seems to be invisible, so perhaps it was just a glitch.

There’s plenty of variety and lots of health, although that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy.

Some sections of the maps are perfect for simply practicing moving and shooting.

There are a couple of really nice pieces. I especially liked the fast zombies dragging the fire drums and also liked the health and ammo stuck in the hole (See image 14)

If the author is interested in contacting me about creating a special PlanetPhillip version I would be grateful because I couldn’t find any contact details.

    My Recommendation:

    First Off:

    Secondly, (this contains spoilers)
I think I have to say that this is to Half-life like how ‘madness” is to Newgrounds flash. The true goal is simple, the environment is simple, and neither are anything to look at and admire.

That said, why would I say that this is a must play? Well, like in Madness, the hero is faced with many different enemies which each have specific strategies by which to beat. If there is one thing that makes this map pack much higher above any author’s first maps is that this author actually utilized the strong points of each enemy and created new ones using simple tricks provided by Valve’s Half-life 2 map editor (Hammer).

The environment is simple, but more than sufficient to each enemy as well. For example, filling a room with not only hordes of zombies, but with unbreakable barrels and boxes by which the zombies can hurl at you.

The strategies to beat them are also very unique and is based upon the player’s strengths. For instance, providing the player with a shotgun against the zombies, yet at the same time giving grenades to the player as well.

Along with these strategies, the author has his own little conversation to the player toward the end of each map. Though this has been done before, the author at least shows a little sense of humor in each small dialogue (I actually laughed to myself after the shock presented in the second one). This is unfortunately a sense of humor that can be easily missed if it wasn’t a complete mappack of three like this (Which is still a one-up over most maps of this nature.)

This map editing strategy and general creativity with enemies should be something to aspire to when mapping, as relying on the natural single player enemies is getting a little stale. I, myself, am looking forward to experimenting with what I can only call “Kamikaze Zombies” from this map pack.

    Satisfying 😀

hmmm, I would have passed these maps up but your pretty green recommendation gives me the urge to download and play.

I will be back shortly with my thoughts. 🙂

    Maybe?

I really did enjoy this. I was suprised.

I dont want to say play it now and I dont want to say just consider it.

But if I had to choose I would say:

    Maybe?

There are a few cool ideas like the fast zombies with barrels and the riot shields, but the first two I didn’t feel were worth playing, the third was fun, especially in the final area at the end, though I got thoroughly sick of the lack of autosaves.

    Play It Now!

The goal is simple. The environments are even simpler. So why is this so good? Excellent utilization of the enemies and even the creation of new enemies using simple Hammer techniques. Very well balanced strategy for beating each room. I highly recommend it

I had a longer review of this before, but my thought still stands:

  7. I’ve just added a short gameplay video to the main post made by CudeDude89, it’s very good, especially the end.

    Play It Now!

    Lol at the Zay2 ending.

  9. Play It Now!

It was fun in and remember me a lot of map back before 2000 where an average design was balance with a challenging gameplay especially regarding the final boss room.

Even if the design is pretty basic it is still enjoyable but the fun factor and thinking is really interesting especially regarding the use of gravity gun (i use it to pick up ammo and health for witch I was full loaded to trow them in the final arena in case of needing)

  10. Play It Now!

I thought it was fun. Worth the download.

    Avoid It!

Look, this map can be even well made, but only play it if you got a pwning computer. Those different things, the ammount of enemies and the heavy graphics of HL2, will make this thing run pretty slowly. I do not got the best machine of the world, but I do meet the requirements. This map crashes often and is not fun at all. Only shoot n” kill. I do not want to blow up my computer playing this map collection. Avoid it!

  12. Trust me, I don’t have the best machine in the world either but never encounted any of those problems. Odd.

  13. marnamai
    Maybe?

I ‘d say consider it, the maps are quite repetitive but have some fresh ideas in them.
The first map started off boring but 2 and 3 only got better near the end.

    graphics 2/10
    sound 1/10
    fun factor 7/10
    gameplay 5/10

    I would say
if there is nothing better around to play …

    Play It Now!

From the mind of an intelligent light-hearted author with a decent sense of humour, I especially liked the messages at the end on Zay 3. For a major classic Doom fan like me, this was just the sort of map collection I have been looking for. I experienced slight lag on Zay 2 with the amount of flames involved, but otherwise it ran very well.

awsome maps, I love them, they have a great design and are fun, you should play it with smod, it’s really fun.

    Play It Now!

I liked it. The author left just enough time between firefights to gather more ammo and reload. The only problem I had was win the second map. I couldn’t figure out how to kill an invisible enemy and if you guys were able to do it, please tell how. I spent alot of time looking at water marks and listening for real hard but I could not take him down. I know I must have hit him a few times but without seeing him it was useless. Had to skip it.

Other then that I really liked the looks of the maps, real clean and plenty of good lighting which seems to be getting rare in alot of mods.I like the outdoor settings like this, and when it was inside there was plenty of good light. The end was overwhelming and downright fun! Good job-hope to see more.

    Play It Later

I zay enjoyable! I particularly liked numbers 2 & 3 where the author has injected a sense of humour./. 1 was okay and 4 less.
None of these are imaginative but the gameplay is great and intense in places

The Filecloud link is broken. I was looking forward to this.

    Hope the it gets fixed.

    1. Fixed and updated. Enjoy. Be sure to write a short review and post a recommendation image.

  23. Maybe?

These were a fun set of maps. They aren’t a PIL/PIN because they’re not a “must play”.

The last enemy in Zay 2 was invisible for me, too, but for some reason I could see its shadow so killed it that way.

I liked the ending of Zay 3. The first time I tried it, I died. I almost just quit because I knew that was the end; but instead I reloaded and finished it.

  24. Play It Now!

    Zay 1
Well, it was fun, but that’s really all I can say for it. It’s pretty much just a map to pass time by. It’s extremely linear and the only puzzles are finding switches which aren’t very haard to find. If you just feel like shooting stuff, play it.
    Zay 2
I like this one better. It’s still extremely linear and is still just a map to pass the time by, but I like the design and placement better. I like the idea of the flaming fast zombies (even though all that fire lagged my computer) and even though I usually hate invisible enemies the Guard at the end was fun to fight since you had to locate him using his shadow. It’s an improvement over the first but still has the flaws of the first.
    Zay 3
I really like this one! There are two issues with it, one being he flashing lights in the beginning were irritating and hurt my eyes, the other being that there’s a part where if you fall off off of a bridge and haven’t saved you have to start over again. Other than that though, his map is great! It even adds two new types of HL2 enemies, Metrocops with shields and kamikaze fast zombies. They’re both fun to play against. The final battle is just awesome as well. Without the car I would have hated that there were that many zombies, but with the car it’s a roadkill slaughterfest. In my opinion this is the map that makes this collection a “Play It Now” instead of a “Play It Later”.
