Thanks Gmann for the info, as you can see I’ve updated the post.
Gameplay & Leveldesign
This was a true surprise. The maps look professional, the lightning is awesome for a first mapping attempt and the fights (which the three levels consists basically of) are fair but challenging. In all three levels you start with minmal weaponry against a horde of enemys. As you progress trough the (very small but nice made) levels, you gain extra weapons, all three levels end when you enter a point where, in a mod, the next level would be loaded. If this mapper would decide to start a mod, I would shurely play it!
Summary
A very short but intense experience. Three nice made levels filled with grunts or aliens you have to fight. The levelsetting is standard, but not boring. The lightning in’t perfect but very good for a beginner! Make sure to play it if you always liked the FPS-side of Half-Life most. 😉
Pretty good set of maps. Standoff and Moonless nights are small straightforward fragfest romps, killing all the grunts with minimal ammo. Lambda Frustration is a bit longer, and a hard map to complete in one try. Ammo is in short supply and the many Xen creatures are everywhere. Cleverly laid out, with good enemy placement, this is the best of the three.
There’s no readme, and no obvious installation method. Can anyone help?
Copy the valve folder to your half life directory.
Run the maps via the console
Ie in console type
map standoff
map moonless
or
map frustration
Depending on wich one you want to play.
Wow–you are fast, andyb. Thanks very much.
Well, very short maps, without real story, puzzles or anything. Download something else, dont waste your time for this one.
Quick playthru with these again…
Standoff
+Nice little map.
-Too much ammo/armor, it was too easy to rush and kill all the grunts.
-Way too short.
Moonless
+Much harder than Standoff, you have to think a bit before going against grunts.
-Wayyyy too short.
Frustration
+Longest one of these three?
-I want more ammo and weapons!
-Simple basic mapping.
Three short, unconnected, in the meaning of separate maps (no mapchange).
“Standoff”, the first map, is also available here at PP as particular map:
http://www.planetphillip.com/posts/half-life-standoff-half-life/
(Maybe remove this, Phillip?)
It’s hard to describe this mappack, as there’s no connection between the maps, each is unique.. somehow. Therefore I’ll describe each map separately.
“Standoff” (map standoff)
First map of the author, we start in a corridor as we can already hear gunfights behind a door. At least we have the HEV suit and a pistol – with only 17 bullets!
Opening the only accessible door reveals some sort of chaos, scientists standing around frightened, a guard tries to return the shots of the soldiers, who are outnumbering him.
So it seems we need to help him. And the scientists.
There’s not much to do, just killing grunts with several weapons you can find or grab from the dead soldiers. I don’t know how to describe balancing here in the meaning of the combat, it’s either too easy due to many health possibilities, or too hard because the quite large number of grunts.
The mapping is cool, lighting and textures are nice. But it’s just all over very, very soon.
“Moonless Nights” (map moonless)
This is a cool, tiny map. As you’ve guessed right, it’s night. Ha!
Another, even tinier gruntfest but here it can be tough due to the lack of ammo or weapons.
The point when you finally grabbed enough ammo from just-killed soldiers, is already the end.
There’s not much to say here, just that the mapping is interesting, nice textures and lighting again, just as in “Standoff”.
It only looks unfinished as the hop into the water (which is the end) leads into a tunnel, which itself leads to nowhere but suddenly fresh air again and an empty area.
Balancing is a big problem here, it just isn’t good when it’s too easy, but this is far from easy. Rushing in is suicide.
Playtime is even shorter than in “Standoff”.
“Lambda Frustration” (map frustration)
The only map that isn’t a gruntfest – but an Xenfest 😉
It’s also the only map with “effective” scripts.
You’ll be happy when finding the HEV suit and weapons, as suddenly… have fun!
As piledriver wrote this is the best map, but with the worst mapping imo.
It’s usually poor textured, lacking of variety but you don’t have any time to watch anyway due to the big amount of action here. Pure adrenaline when played the very first time!
It’s a BM style corridors map with at least a few details, alarm sounds continuous and there’s no time to rest, except when you finally killed the majority of aliens.
The balancing is very good here because there is only very limited ammo.
The pro’s & con’s below are meant for all three maps together this time.
Pro’s:
-Plenty of action, requiring combat strategies, rushing in will result in a quick death
-Decent mapping with good textures, lighting (maybe except for last map frustration)
-Good atmosphere (maybe except for map moonless), supported by music
Con’s:
-Maps are not connected
-No story
-No puzzles
-Short playtime (~1-5 minutes each map, total of 10-20 minutes)
-Combat (balancing) can be tough, act wisely!
-Not much variety in gamedesign
-Maps looking unfinished and are just too tiny
Conclusion:
If the author would have combined all maps together somehow, mixed in some puzzles and at least a silly story 😉 this could’ve been a very good, maybe great mod.
Unfortunately it’s just a small, average mappack.
However, if you like gruntfest-style maps, this is made for you.
Woodpigeon’s Map Pack is a small unit consisting of three disparate maps. In other words, they’re not played in sequence. To each map its own.
One of these maps is the already-reviewed Standoff, a fair level…actually, the best one overall in the ZIP file. The other three are definitely substandard. Lambda Frustration is certainly aptly named. The Lambda Core-inspired texturing is decent, but the overly simplistic layout leaves a lot to be desired, never mind its alien-oriented combat an exercise in frustration. How’s this sound – literally dropping smack into a group of four alien grunts? Literally impossible to survive unless you’re playing on Easy or using cheat codes.
Then there’s Moonless Nights, a poorly-made gruntfest. Over five Marines in a rather small yard, itself constructed fairly well but it has a fatal level design flaw that kills off any potential enjoyment – the placement of all those grunts.
Although Standoff is the highest point here (still not saying much there, though), Woodpigeon’s Map Pack ranks at the low end of the HLSP scale thanks to its faulty level design. Definitely one to avoid.

Standoff and moonlight were nice short combat maps, I kinda enjoyed them both. But the last map called Frustration was just a spam of creatures with little ammo and only a pistol. So I bunny hopped past the creatures and triggered the ‘Thanks for playing.’

Moonless Nights
Missing textures (wad is in correct dir) Incredibly short and cheating is required, not worth it, not a complete map at all.
Lambda Frustration
Another short map that requires god and impulse 101, pointless.
Standoff
Best of all 3 but still not good. Super short and needs cheats, Avoid.

Just take your gun and run to eliminate someone. In the map of Lambda Frustration he placed a lot of enemies. The alien Grunt is surrounded by houndeyes making a perfect shield. You would want to snipe the alien grunt with the handgun first, or it will be a trap. Besides that level has ammunition so adjusted to Easy that even playing on Normal is risky.
