Similar to yesterday post, this release is very short and not only that there are only a couple of enemies. If you are looking for gameplay action, look elsewhere.
If you are looking for something with atmosphere then this might be interesting. It reminds me of Radix but without the gameplay.
The high resolution textures certainly make it look fantastic but there is more to this than just textures.
The engine room is a glory to see and I couldn’t help think of Star Trek engine rooms.
Fun for maybe 5 minutes but there’s not enough substance to give a higher recommendation that a Maybe.
More of a portfolio piece than anything else.
Wow, it really does look stellar in terms of level design. what was the real purpose of this map? it looks like an art piece instead of a simply gameplay-oriented map.
Err! Is that it? Or am I missing something?
Looks great, but in no way is it comparable to Radix! As for Star Trek engine rooms, NO WAY, I’ve got photo’s (Hyde Park Star Trek Exhibition (2002)) to prove it.
This looks great, but as Phillip says
Not bad designed but unfortunately very empty, it really seems like a very first level of some upcoming mod (which it surely is not![?])
The atmosphere is nice, made with a lil atmospheric space station sound, and there’s a radio in one of the rooms, also a window, which, if you try to break it with the crowbar gets closed as a protection system – nice idea, nice detail..
A sort of fun fact is that I realized the sound when the window is shutting off, the alarm-tone of Poke 646 Vendetta is hearable 😀
I also wondered: where to go now? Is that all? After switching one machine off, I thought there must be something new available now, but it isn’t :/
Pro’s:
-Atmoshpere (+atmospheric sound)
-Good but not godly leveldesign, altho a lil all-same-looking halls
-Decent details
Con’s:
-Clone-halls everywhere, feeling like a maze a bit
-As good as no enemies, and only 1 weapon
-Looking very unfinished
I’m not really sure why this is packaged as a mod when it is only a single map. Looks like the author intended to do more and then gave up. Nice to look at but should not have been released. However, this might inspire me to play USS Darkstar again!
Hehe true..and have fun with Darkstar, I recently played it too after years again 🙂
It’s packaged as a mod because of all the custom content (models, sprites, sounds, etc.). Easier to install/remove that way.
Yes, I do know that 🙂
I only meant it looks like a teaser map for a unfinished mod 😉
Well not much substance to this map. It’s pretty and does look somewhat familiar – I like the layout, the details, mood, and the engine room.
Unfortunately it seems more like a tech demo or showpiece rather than anything else meant for release. It looks good and has style but other than that not much going for it. Worth a look only if you like poking around spaceships in the HL engine.
Edit: bah somehow I got logged out between comments.
A big waste of time, I mean maybe it was a good project, I guess in the line of emulate the style and the feeling of USS Darkstar, but not close at all of it, that’s for sure, I think this was the classic lost mod project, where the author only developed one aceptable map, specially in the spacecraft-like textures and elements, but then he didn’t figure out how to continue with the project, so he release it “as it”, put 2 stupid zombies and launch it.
Please don’t do that!!, keep the stuff u didn’t finish in your private lost dreams projects and then maybe when is finished give us something.
The environment is ok, but I don’t hell know why this lost project have higher rates!!! god even MAYBES!!!, what’s wrong with u guys!!, anyway that’s it u decide if try it or not.
I think you have been really unfair. Comparing this to a proper mod is not the best way to do. That’s like me complaining that because a mod is not as long as a retail game people shouldn’t play it.
I believe this map was made for a competition and so the author’s objectives could be very different from other maps.
Be glad you had the chance to play a great looking mod with some nice touches (the ceiling lights, for example). Yes, it didn’t have much combat and was short, but is it really that bad to not play?
Perhaps you are just angry that it didn’t meet your expectations.
I am not judging it bad for the lenght at all, is just that I think this is just not my knd of “mod”, and I don’t really know for which competition it was made, I mean, maybe for a new Texture development-Environment competition, fits.
So I have too stress, that this is not my knid of mod, because: i’m the kind of gamer, who needs action, and really doesn’t look too much on the texture development to conssider them as a weight point on my reviews , I felt this mod, it feels for me as a big map-trap, like a dead end hallway, indeed that is one of the things I hate in modding I conssider it as a big gameplay sin, that developers make maps with just absolutely no ends, no matter if the map textures are beautiful, I just don’t like at all that after killing 2 or 3 ennemys they left you in a forsaken map with absolutely nothing to do!, not even a black screen or just a simple text that indicates “-THE END BUDDY, THAT’s IT, THANKS FOR PLAYING-“
Altough you are right, maybe my expectations definitely were not filled at all, but ok, my recognition for this work goes strongly, for that space-craft looking, that is well done, the textures are outsanding, and that atmosphere of a spaceship is just well done, I also could maybe give it a TT rate or a Maybe if the developer would had put me fighting and maybe if he had put some clear goal t do like blowing off a reactor or something like that, and also if he had indicated the end of the gameplay.
Yes, I understand that, but just because you didn’t like it, doesn’t mean others won’t. Remember, the recommendation system is NOT a rating system. It’s a recommendation system. There have been lots of mods I hated, but still recommended readers to play it as there were elements worthy of interest.
Yeah you are right, I think I focus myself on the recomendation images as, rating grades, which I understand now they’re not, but anyway perhaps the problem with this work is that as you said:
so that’s the point, I accept I was kind unfair with my opinion but is still something I don’t like, this is more as a thecnical test or beta of something. Now I think it was unfair to cmpare it to a mod.
I don’t want that my opinion became imperative or anything like that, I think I never meant to do that on my reviews, but also as I said, others are the only ones which are going to decide if they try it or not, as well as like it or not, and that’s perfectly natural for this and the rest of the mods.
LOL, guys, it’s supposed to be a nice small puzzle map! I don’t know where Phillip get that map, which was uploaded, but initial map has a gameplay. You can download it from the author’s site:
http://biomech.itstudios.ru/gallery/uss_gaspra.htm
Here is a solution for initial map:
First you should do – explore the environment. And you will find a 9-button panel, which you should entirely activate to open a door of a control room near it, and then – open a door of a cargo depot. Then you should seek for keycard, which allow you to access to the second floor.
The puzzle is completed, when you see the text: “Engines deactivated. Mission complete“. And then game exits to the menu.

Hello, I’m the author of this map. I was startlingly surprised to see it here, I don’t think that I’ve ever announced it anywhere publicly, so it’s a miracle that people were able to locate it at all.
So I wanna put a little bit of context into it, even if I don’t know if this is still relevant at all in 2020:
It was originally just one map that I’ve created for a forum map design competition. The competition had some strict rules – you were provided a box-like level layout, and you were supposed to not deviate from it. I wrapped it up into mod package to just add a little bit of polish to the project, but it still took only the second place – and yes, because it doesn’t have much of a gameplay. ^^”
The interesting this is that I look at it now, and think “shit, I could’ve done better with the level design, why did it reached the second place t all?”
No gameplay, no story, nothing.
