Firstly, Tahnks to Unq for tellling me how to get this to work in Steam. You don;’t need to do anything, as I have included the file required.
Secondly, if during the first map you do not see your allies, enemies and others entities, perform a quicksvae and quickload. I didn’t realise this had happened to me adn thought everything looked really empty and that there were lots of invisible walls, until I started to get zapped by vortigaunts I couldn’t see!
- Copy the ultimate folder into your Half-Life folder.
- Restart or start Steam.

With a few tweaks this could be a personal favourite. Please make sure you read the important notes if things look really empty and bland at the beginning.
I suspect this is new for many of you as it wasn’t designed to run on Steam and it was only available on a few sites.
It’s a trek through Black Mesa style areas and even a trip to Xen, but the highlight is the general battles and firefights.
I had to cheat right at the end, because I was in a hurry to finish it and get it posted, and didn’t want to go back too far with a previous save. Plan your day and sit down and take your time with this one.
The only thing I would complain about is a lack of really interesting central pieces, but not everybody is a big fan of those anyway.
It’s not the best mod you will play this month, but it does a lot of things right.
Enjoy.
The beginning is kind of buggy with invisible walls and doors/switches that don’t appear correctly. At least that’s what happened for me. It gets much better as it goes along and covers a lot of ground. My only complaint is that there isn’t enough health kits and I was always running low
I know this mod for several years now and I’m glad to finally see it here.. I must have sent that mod to Phillip at least 6 times per e-mail in the last few years .. 😀
It’s true this mod has some issues npcs that disappear for no apparent reason and some other smaller glitches. With the savegame trick it should work though. It has btw nothing to do with steam. I had the same issues with Hl1 WON version.
I remember that the author mentioned once that this bug happens only in the first map or so and that it had something to do with a weird compile error.. Well Hammer can be tricky sometimes so it isn’t really the mappers fault I guess.
As for the mappack it’s a great one. There aren’t that many mods out there where you play as Blackops in fact there are only 2. This here and the mod called Black Ops. http://www.planetphillip.com/posts/black-ops-half-life/
So enjoy it. As you can see in the screens the mapping is decent and offers some variations for the player + great intence battles.
My only complaints about this mod would be this strange disappearance bug in the first map and the fact that your Blackop allies are actually just reskinned op4 grunts. I would have wished for a complete voice replacement of the op4 grunt chatter.
Here we play as David Johnson nicknamed “Corporal Shepard”, a black operative. The beginning is good: we fly in the helicopter and then see the cutscene where we go down by the rope. After that our allies became invisible. I listened to the author’s advice, saved the game and loaded it, after that I could see them again. The game is realised well: we have the vest from Opposing Force, and the hands holding the weapon are painted in black.
We go to Black Mesa and enter it. The design is good, but small negligences are noticeable.
And then as the author said, revolution of events happened: in another storage room monsters attack us, and it seems that their number is infinite, so we have to run away. The architecture is convincing enough to create a believable Black Mesa.
The battles are hard. Medkits are very scarce and the monsters like to hide and attack suddenly. Good balance, though: it’s possible to win and not too hard.
There is no story development, we just go forward, returning fire to enemies. It reminds me of Cleaner’s Adventures, where the most levels were storyless too, but there it was compensated by the great design, here the design is not great enough for that.
It was good to see some well-made Xen. But after it the mod became a little boring: once again we found ourselves in the storages where our allies were defeated by monsters. Yes, the monsters are different now, but still it’s not very interesting to see the same scene again. Thankfully, soon the theme changed to research labs, and it became interesting again. Now we go through various places.
There’s something wrong with our allies” AI: sometimes they cannot go through the door.
True. If I remember correctly, the black ops weren’t as talkative as the regular ones, so their talks didn’t feel right.
Overall, it’s a good mod, but I felt that it was too monotonous and long. I recommend playing Cleaner’s Adventures instead of this, but if you already played that, you can complete this mod, if you can take long, maybe even too long fight with monsters of Race X.
A fun mod to play, but not if you like to run and gun, you need to use as much cover as possible!
Looks wise this was a fairly standard BM style, although in place’s proportions seemed a little bit off. This is one you really need to use some strategy and not rush in head first with all guns blazing, if you just rush in you will die a lot.
One of the things worth doing, is once you’ve cleared an area, go back as far as you can to stock up on ammo and smash wooden crates, some but not all crates contain things like health. I don’t like when I’m forced to backtrack but in this case you’re not forced to, but it’s worth doing to get supplies.
Apart from the necessary save/reload at the start and the trip to Xen (I don’t like Xen) this is quite an enjoyable mod. Except for I or 2 enemies from HL1 and OP4, this seemed to have the most variety I’ve seen in a mod before but the pit drones were a bit over used.
I’m having a serious soundloop issue with the helicopter scene. Every time I reach screenie 49 there, and do what’s needed, the game crashes. Anyone else have this issue? How can I get past this? I’ve really enjoyed this mod so far, it’s definitely at the “play it now” level, and might have been a PF if and only if this hadn’t happened. 🙁
This is super wierd. No entities are visible in these maps for me. My squadmates, enemies, buttons, doors, func_walls – even the laser pointer for the gun. What’s going on? Regular HL isn’t doing this – only this mod. Any ideas?
Read the information above. It’s solved very easily by quicksave and reloading.
Please read the post properly, it contains details of this issue.
Okay now I’ve finished it. I managed to noclip past the problematic area, to the ever-present sound of a circling helicopter above.
With that issue, unfortunately knocking this mod down, it’s joined by the slightly anticlimactic ending. However, PIN it stands: this was a sold mod. Lots of good, energetic gunplay, more thinking than I had to do in HL1 by far just in terms of tactics (though there were no puzzles worth mentioning, which is kind of sad), and tons of OMG NO HEALTH LEFT moments.
I wouldn’t mind playing this again if it had been made into a longer, more coherent storyline. The grunts voices seemed a bit out of place, I’d love to have heard other voices there instead. I did enjoy the addition of the other monsters, seeing the same old same olds would have made this one too monotonous to recommend.
All in all this weekend was quite good for these two shortish but fun mods.
I really liked this, because we playe as a black ops guy here, I like those combat roles HL provide through the story, cop, marine, black ops agent, scientist, even janitors can combat in the hell BM is, here combat is at hand and u will find some situations where is better to get the hell out of there before it gets so dam hard, so that explains how combat is in here.
If u place impulse 101 cheat u can have the awsome weapons from the Op Force, and the esentials from the HL, so if u love weaponery like me, u should try that, I almost put that code because one reason, i’d wanted to shoot the 50 mm machine gun from the OpF which is available in this mod!!, so yeah for me that was awsome.
In other terms, I think the lenght is ok, for the action that provides this mod, is so dynamic so u never will find urself just fooling arround, because u have to fight till the end.
Maybe the leak points on thisone, is that all the weapons from the OpF like the Sinper riffle and the 50 mm are not available without cheating, but that is paid due to the Xrace ennemys we need to fight in this unique and few promoted mod.
I had some minor bgus in the elevators, and the issue with the Ai’s at the begining that it solves fast saving and reloading, everything else is cool, and in final words I like to fight my ass in black mesa like we do in this mod.
a few rooms before I to to xen I have 100 health by the time I get to xen I am down to 30 after the fight to gain access to the portal back I am down to 4. game over wrote a save so I pulled it out. when I got back from xen I could see two med kits but with 2 alien grunts and alien slaves between me and them my 4 health would not let me progress.
course I play all mods with the crowbar only and have to admit defeat if I have to pull out a weapon. ok maybe that last statement is stretched a bit. snicker.
otherwise its a good mod give it a try, even if you use the weapons hehe.
Quite frankly, I found it very boring and tedious. Mostly just lots and lots of crates, boxes, and shipping containers with lots and lots of enemies and lots and lots of hallways and doors. The only other thing to do other than shoot and run was an occasional door or elevator button to press and a few jumping places. I guess this is some peoples cup of tea but it isn’t for me
The famous BM incident let’s you play an Black Ops corporal here whose mission is to… well, find it out for yourself!
This mod is quite cool as you never get stuck and proceed quickly with lot of combat situations but like absolutely no puzzles and a neglectable story.
There are 18 maps in total according to the readme, but it felt like it’s only 12 as the mod is over very quick, what a pity!
You will encounter the popular “Opposing Force”-style enemies and use the common OF weapons for killing them, incl. satchels, grenades, rocket launcher etc.
The mod itself was made for pure action, so if you like puzzles you will be highly disappointed here…
Pro’s:
-Excellent mapping, layouts, lighting incl. outdoor areas etc.
-Straightforward combat with a few surprises
-Excellent balancing, maybe too easy for veterans 😉
-Great BM atmosphere (also some known BM areas if I’m right)
-Fights between aliens and soldiers and also with your Black Ops squad
-Crates are quickly destroyed 😀
Con’s:
-Quite short unfortunately 🙁
-No puzzles
-Usual cleanout story
-Minor bugs and graphic issues (very rare)
-Stupid squad AI
Conclusion: If you love fast and straight action, this mod is for you!
Well, this mod it’s a great one. There aren’t many mods where you can play as a Black Ops soldier. However, I found it quite easy and pretty short. All you need to do is unleash your MP5 everywhere, what might cause you to run out of ammo a few times. Also, your allies are pretty dumb, because they have to be at least 3 of them to kill a single Race-X alien.
5 word review:
Good but unbalanced Black-Ops mod.
PS: Black-Ops only counts as a single word.

I quite enjoyed playing this mod as something new, a black-ops soldier, only problems i ever had was the beginning where u have to f6 and f7 other than that it was quite fun and definitely worth the 2 hours of gametime. I kinda wish it went on longer or the ending was some sort of different. The allies were kinda dumb as they didn’t always follow me.

I like the concept of playing as black ops. So I can fight with the soldiers like HL1 but I can also use the knife and night vision like Opposing Force. I also like the map design and combats. But the game might be more interesting if there are some conversations with the NPCs. And the game crashes when I kill the attack helicopter… I don’t know the reason. I enjoyed the mod before that scene!

Off to a good start, even though you start off with invisible models but that can be fixed immediately. Combat can be tedious at times but still beatable. Puzzles are quite easy, more on common sense than making you think on how to solve it. Story, not bad but I find it boring.
A linear but very good mapping mod, the only thing thats lacking is puzzles
Otherwise very balanced combat mod.
