About
This is another mod made by a group of students. These mods, and I will be adding one-a day for the next few days, are appearing more and more. As with many of these types of mods, the “feel” is more about experimenting and testing than actual gameplay.
The screenshots are in almost random order to avoid you feeling that you know what is coming.

I’m not really a big fan of Zombie-themed levels but I chose to start with this mod out of the few I downloaded today. It has quite an Unrealesqe atmosphere to it. To be perfectly honest I didn’t enjoy playing this mod until the last two areas. I won’t say what they are but the previous levels were simply corridors with a few enemies and a an occasional puzzle. The whole thing was bordering on the boring but for some reason I wanted to finish it and I am glad I did. The ending is not spectacular but I liked the mapping and events.
Negatives
– Unimaginative in most places.
– The level changes.
– Lack of surprises.
Positives
– Interesting ending.
– New textures and models, especially for the door mechanisms.
– Not too hard.
Conclusion
If you like dark corridors and 2D gameplay then you may like this. I can’t give this a Play It Now! recommendation becasue it really didn’t inspire me.
If you have a spare 30 minutes and want to play something and like the screenshots, then please download it and play it. If you want something special, don’t bother.
I liked the style of the mod. I had to cheat at the end though because I got stuck with the boat vehicle. 🙁
(Video Preview Coming Soon)
Couldn’t get the boat down?If so just shoot the wood holding it with a rocket.
Iliked the style and layout of it for the most part.It could of used more enemies in places but for a first attempt by this crew I must say
I got the boat. I just couldnt get through the window out to the helicopter.
This mod has some interesting but basic architecture and there’s not an awful lot to do. I spotted one or two mistakes with the mapping but nothing serious. There aren’t many enemies and the ones that are there don’t provide much of a challenge. There are a couple of “puzzles” but the solutions are too obvious.
If the authors went back through the maps adding a few more atmospherics and enemies this mod might deserve a Play It Now but as it is, I can only say…
p.s It’s an Episode 1 mod.
I just can’t bring myself to recommend it because, although it looks pretty in places, there are a few irritating bugs here and there and the enemy provide no challenge. The combine may as well have been straw-stuffed dummies.
I got the boat down by jamming a log in the waterwheel, gotta be quick tho! Other than that it played fair!
I did the same thing, jammed it and got the boat but still couldnt get out to fight the helicopter. 🙁
on a side note,
“video preview by cubedude89… title misspelled by planetphillip”
The video volume of the music should have been tweaked to be the same so I dont jump out of my skin. 😀
I know “spoiler” but ya got to get the waterwheel to roll down the wood guides, if the log gets stuck in front of the wheel, you can work it loose! It does work, but it took me awhile. The wood wheel rolls down and knocks out the bars! be sure to quick save as ya go!
Yes, I know! I’ll repack it later.
Okay, okay, Mr Picky!! I’ll reduce the volume too. 😉
SPOILER ALERT
I also had trouble with the wheel and thought the rocket launcher was for the helicopter, so I tried various ways to dislodge the wheel. I actually tried to push logs down the waterway and then I lodged a log under the wheel that eventually broken the dam thing.
SPOILER ALERT OFF
On the same note, the whole water vehicle in a box above the wheel was a little silly really.
Having problems with the installer again.
Anyone have in .rar or .zip format?
Installs as a sourcemod but doesn’t show up in list when I start Steam. Any Ideas?
whats your sourcemods directory?
is it …program files/valve/steam/steamapps/sourcemods
or … program files/steam/steamapps/sourcemods.
Hi cubedude89, Mines the same as the first.
Bc
I thought so. you have the valve folder. which most installers and modders make it install to a directory without the valve folder because overall most people dont have that folder.
So look in your program files for a folder called steam then you should find the mod. copy that into the directory you use.
Cubedude89, No it put it in the right place. I find it under sourcemods but steam doesn’t pick it up. I wonder if there is something wrong with the “gameinfo.txt” file. I’m guessing thats what steam would look for.
thanks for your help! BC
Isn’t the mod actually called something else? Not Toxic Waste Junkies
Also, I have my Steam installation in C:\Valve\Steam\… and I didn’t have any problem installing it. Surely the installer checks the install path in the registry.
That what it is listed as on their webpage. It’s also what the folder is called and the name that appears in the Mods list.
What do you think it’s called?
My Steam game list shows “ToxicWasteJunkies” all in one word!
Sorry, it was the Zen Monk mod that was listed as Gasket Mod.
AI, Is the toxicwastejunkies folder under sourcemods on your system? still can’t see why Steam doesn’t recognize it on mine. Sourcemods have worked for me before.
BC
Yes it is, and it should show up in your Steam games list! Did you let Steam/HL2 install to their default “Valve” folder?? If not that could be the problem. You could try to reinstall HL2? I have reinstalled this mod and the other mod “Zen_Monastery” and both go to the correct folder “Sourcemods” and both work! An error in your “Steam” program, good possibility.
That is something that needs to be cleared up.If you install from a cd/dvd it goes valve/steam but on some of the steam dowmloads it goes to a steam folder first with no valve folder.
Yes that is somthing that needs to cleared up, I wish the mod/map makers would stop making these “self” installers, I think that would ease up some of the problems people are having with installs! Sorry for being off subject!! There are others that “don’t” have thier games installed in the “default” places!
I have the same problem as BC I use the exe file and it put all the correct folder in to steam/sourcemod but when I open steam it doesn’t shows even quiting steam an opening it one’s more doesn’t change anything…
but if it require episode 1 this could be the reason I don’t have it…
no, it uses SDK Base. which is what allows modders to use the new engine features of episode 1 and still be compatible with hl2.
in other words you dont need episode 1 🙂
Another mod, can’t recall which off-hand, forced me to DL Source SDK when I have absolutely no use for it, I’m not a mapper, and given the complexity of the learning process am not likely to become one, ever….But I did have Episode 1, prior to a hard-drive death, and couldn’t be bothered re-downloading it when I got up & running again. This mod would NOT play without Episode 1. Sorry Cubedude, you do need Episode 1…
Off to give it a whirl now.
first off, no mod would make you download source sdk. you might be thinking of sdk base.
second you are right about episode 1 I just checked now and it is possible to map with the episode 1 gcf which then would require the player to have episode 1. why someone would do this is unknown because thats what the sdk base is for, at least for the most part.
So the fix:
Currently in the gameinfo.txt it has
“SteamAppId 380”
which is for ep1 gcf
if you do not have ep1 then put
“SteamAppId 215”
that is, if you have sdk base downloaded. (and of course hl2)
or if you dont and you are totally against getting sdk base then put
“SteamAppId 220”
which will work with hl2 without sdk base.
Enjoy,
PS: I dont promise my advice will work but im pretty sure it will.
Cubedude89, You are the man! I have sdk base, changed to “SteamAppId 215” and it now shows up in the installed game list.
Thank You!
Bc.
Oh well its academic now, at least for me, and my thoughts on the actual mod are pretty much in line with everyone elses….the architecture was quite nice in places, but nothing outstanding really, but it did seem to play very smoothly and wasn’t as resource hungry as a lot of mods can be, which is fine for those of us with “lesser” PCs.
Bring on the next!
(and it was Source SDK Base, not what Source SDK…oops)
Oop! Now I get a “Could not load library client error” when starting this mod. Maybe I should give up.
Bc.
lol. noob developers.
FIX:
Copy this folder “username/half life 2/hl2/bin”
and paste it in “sourcemods/ToxicWasteJunkies”
basically your taking the client.dll and server.dll from hl2’s bin folder and putting it in the toxic waste junkies bin folder.
WooHoo! I’m Playin now! Stuck at the jail cells after I freed my friendlies. Thanks again!
Bc.
Your welcome. Glad I could help.
I also got stuck and just cheated. 😀
One other thing I’ve noticed I can’t save games in sourcemods anymore. maybe cause of that no more support of Windows ME after June 30?
Bc.
I have really a mixed filling design wasn’t that great while textures, ambiance and some puzzle had really an unreal filling which I found good, looking to the “big” download playtime is quite short… I encounter several error at the end perhaps because I don’t have sdk install but it didn’t spoil the gameplay it was also perpahps a little too easy and misses defenetly a good music ambiance (could have use some unreal music…)
Finally the abrupt ending gave a final minus opinion I would still according with Phillip’s review
Gameplay:
This is a short modification that isn’t anything memorable that comes across rather dull during play. A majority of the time you’ll be passing through very small maps doing simple puzzles or participating in very easy fights against either zombies or the Combine. The puzzles themselves aren’t exactly difficult to solve, rather straight forward and nothing entirely special leaving no satisfaction as you progress further.
The maps also lacks any ambient sounds throughout which makes the place seem far too quiet, the torch fires on the walls could have used crackling for example. As mentioned earlier, playing through this can be quite dull but it does have a few interest pieces here and there such as the wooden bridge puzzle or the last area..
Design:
Average in most places throughout, except the last location which is the best visually compared to the previous levels, but nothing special overall. The design is very blocky structurally and lacks shape; a lot of constructions were badly made in a majority of the levels. The lighting is average, it does lack some mood and doesn’t look exactly great either in a majority of those areas as well, some places do have some moderate lighting that works but could be better. The short mod also uses some new models throughout which do fit the environment quite well, and something visually different to look at when pulling those levers or walking through the map.
Conclusion:
Simple puzzles, easy fights in an average design set of short levels that can come across quite dull, but has a few nice moments.

I’m having the same problem as “BC”. The self executable “exe” file has installed it to the right place – Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/SourceMods, but it is not listed there in “My Games” once I have closed and then re-opened “Steam” for some reason. Iv’e installed many mods which require to be put in this same destination, and they have all showed up, until now. Is there somethng missing in the folder contents or something like that?
I’m downloading the “Rar” file to see If have better luck with that one.
The rar and exe both showed in my games list as toxic waste junkies. It may have something to do with the steam app id of 380 in the game info txt if you dont have episode one but really it should show in the list no matter what.
The beginning was kind of uneventful, no crashes though. I didn’t get a ending except for a “congrats. you escaped” and it kind of just hung there. LAME. Also, near the end, if you shoot down the prisoner in the cage with the rocket launcher, you MUST pick it up immediately, or the prisoner will, and you wont be able to get it. If you do, one shot at supports for the water wheel and viola! To short for my taste…especially for over 100 megs…
All things considered even though this modification is fairly short, and has some balancing issues it’s not that bad.
Toxic Waste Junkies does have some very nice custom textures, and unique lighting. It’s a little on the easy side, but still a fairly good looking modification regardless.
It is decent considering the fact this most likely was a student project.
Visuals and map design look very decent. As for the combat, it is very easy. Puzzle, frustrating. As for the puzzle, the last one doesn’t give you hints. Apparently you have to dislodge the wheel to break out using the logs. To be honest, THE GRAVITY GUN WOULD’VE BEEN USEFUL IN THAT PUZZLE. And the ending, it doesn’t end the map right away. It stays faded until you decide to quit the game.
