This is an insane collection of maps. I had to use God mode to get the screenshots. IF anybody can finish these maps on Hard without cheating then I will offer my allegiance to you my Lord.
The maps themselves are a little boxy and repetitive, as are the cut scenes. (Repetitive not boxy!). They are also too long.
I have no idea if there is enough ammo or health to beat these maps, so good luck.
I only started using the God mode when I couldn’t find the way to go after killing the tentacle.
Overall it’s a good release but I feel the difficulty will cause many to either stop playing or resort to God mode.
Finally thanks to 23-down for sending me the files and a few others which I’ll post over the coming days.
Also I had no problems at all… Medkits and weapons were enough out there to find.
It’s true it’s a really hard mod.. But the later game progress the sniper rifle in this maps is really your best friend… 1 shot 1 kill… No alien Slave or Op4 Shock Trooper was a real threat The hardest place was the starting area… It’s still a very hard mod I never died so often before like in this few maps.
To the maps itself: I think that they were ok, infact for a hl1 mappack are the maps very good. I know at least 30 other mappacks and mods where are the maps really poor in textures and quality. But that isn’t the case in “The Xen Campaigns”. The maps are surly not best quality but also not too bad.
So if you’re are Opposing Force fan then my recommendation is Play It Later.
If you’re however no fan of op4… Or you just don’t like hard games then you should keep your finger away of this mappack.
Well its pretty tough.Lots and lots of enemies in places. My biggest beef is that after killing the tentacle and climbing down via the wire you end up in an area with 2 ways to go.Both end at dead ends with holes in the ceiling.I found no way to get up there so I had to noclip.Over all though besides that one spot I enjoyed this map pack.
near in the cave of the tentacle is the Barnacle Grapple weapon on a ledge near the hole.
The right way is it to jump on that ledge from above the hole.. Take the gun.. Use is on the other side where green slime is… Jump down fire on the barrels so that the tentacle dies and go through a new opened exit thanks to the explosion of the barrels.
I 2nd andyb`s opinion. Played this years ago. A decent effort I think.
Thanks but I couldn’t find the exit from that level. Once I got past the door and killed everything behind it I could work out where to go next.
My initial impression is that this imod s a lot of fun, but way, way too dark. Even with your monitor at maximum brightness and contrast the mod is so poorly lit that we have to choose between its being too dim to see enemies, and turning on night vision and obliterating our weapon’s crosshair. This takes a lot of the fun out of the game for me.
Phillip, if you’re reading this, is there any way to heighten the contrast between text and background at PlanetPhillip, and to increase the font size a little? My eyes are close to 20-20, and I have trouble here. Otherwise, just a great, great site.
shawn… Maybe you should check your montior colour settings then… For me the mod wasn’t so dark…
I’m not soure but you can find the monitor settings in your graphic card tools \ programs on your computer.
You can increase or decrease the font size, at least in my browser, by holding the Control key while using the scroll wheel on your mouse.
I had the same problem as Phillip. I killed the tentacle with the explosive barrels, went through the door, killed all the aliens and black ops, but there’s no way to progress. I know there is a hole in the ceiling I can grapple up to – this leads up to an area which has a computer desk with a couple of boxes of uranium ammo, but the door there just leads back to the room above the dead tentacle. I know that outside there is an area with a garg, but I can’t find any way to get into it without cheating.
After grappling up through the hole, there is a camera/monitor on each side of the room. You have to use them both to open the doors
Thanks for the advice. I’ll give it a try.
Aah – totally missed them. Just looked like random lab computer decorations, didn’t realise they were usable objects.
Finished the mod. Pretty good combat! And I enjoyed the concept of defending human military bases on Xen. Wasn’t anything special though. But since there are not very many Opposing Force mods anyway, it is worth Opposing Force fans giving it a shot.
ya ya supz on da grond :)) jking lol I found out how to play it , did you posted the xen campaigns 2?
I am the guy who made this mod. I had NO Idea people were still playing it! I DID begin a Xen Campaigns sequal with the half life 1 engine, but then halflife 2 came out and I never got back to it, for various reasons. To be honest the halflife 2 engine intimidated me alot(Loved playing the game of course).
I would consider a sequal if I got a team wanting to do it. Too much time and work would be needed if I tryed a sequal with Hammer code and the halflife 2 engine. Story-lines aren’t a problem for me, but I have to work hard to produce the “eye-candy”- stuff people like…NO WAY without help…sorry. I am delighted enough to see people ask about a sequal, so that I would start one if a mod team contacted me though. 😉 Thanks very much for the input on my mod! Thought it was long buried in the recesses of deep cyberspace.
After reading my original review I can’t help wondering how bad a player I was back then – not that I’m any great shakes now.
I really enjoyed most of the mod. I found the cutscenes unnecessary and some of the designs a little blocky, but the actual gameplay was pretty fun.
The author has created a fun set of maps that could do with some polishing but it wouldn’t have changed the enjoyment level.
All in all a fun 2 hours, spent killing bad guys.

This is a really fun one. It takes place mostly in Xen environments, and there are a lot of large open areas for combat, but also some interiors thrown in.
We face up against large amounts of tough Xen and Race X enemies, but the arsenal is large enough that gameplay is not too difficult. I was able to rely on the Shock Roach alone for most of the weaker enemies. There are a lot of friendly marines as well which is nice, and the Opposing Force assets are well used. This is a pretty long mappack, and the amount of combat means it should probably be played in more than one sitting.
The only real problems for me were that the level design sometimes becomes repetitive blocky corridors, and also that the level transitions often take you to completely different areas without any warning. Some more exploration or puzzle bits between fighting would also have been nice to break things up a bit.
Overall it is worth the effort to give this one a try.

This was really a mixed bag.
This really had it’s moments but was marred down by over the top difficulty, questionable texturing, pointless Squadmates, odd level changes and being able to get outside the map multiple times.
The cutscenes really overstayed their welcome and the level design could get really blocky.
Expect to have Godmode on most of the time.

It’s an interesting set of maps. The layout is nice, and I liked the custom voice acting. However, I did find the difficulty level to be too much. I was playing on easy, but there was no way I could finish without using god mode. Definitely worth playing, but don’t be surprised if you have to fire up the console at some point. The barnacle was hard to find for me, so if you have that problem too look at the earlier comments on this page for the solution
Too many cut-scene’s and dodgy map changes, but still a degree of fun to be had!
It took too long to get started then an unexpected map change in the shuttle and then up against shock troopers, fortunately they don’t seem to be able to pass the hole in the wall.
I’m not a great fan of Xen settings and fortunately most of it is set in a base. For looks it’s not terrible but also not outstanding, but the combat/game play in some places is just ridiculous! In quite a few OP4 maps the authors seem to think battles must be against impossible odds, which some may find possible but I’m just a mere mortal and simply cheat. I have to work on the basis that if I (or others) have to cheat, then the mapper has got it wrong.

This mappack, has an original concept, which is to combat in Xen environments with the OpF old grunts…, until that point things are OK, techinically textures are not bad, and the battles are quite entretaining, conssidering you combat against aliens and black ops.
The first 4 levels are ok, but then the 5th level I think is called XC5 or something like that, IS A MESS, is the level where u find the tenacle to be more precise, the directions to solve the puzzle are unclear and is kind of confusing to figure out how to progress in that area, since I didn’t found the barnacle on time then when I was down I couldn’t get up so I use impuylse 101 to get the barnacle and get out of there…, then the triggers are dead and the door where u found the Gargantua next was stuck.
After the 5th level things improove a little, but then I wonder Why we are on Xen with earth gravity?????, is a big flaw on detail, if u are on xen please use xen gravity to stress the envirtonment game conditions of XEN!!
Overall is an ok release, but kind of weak in some design map terms and medium details that could have been solved better. Oh, also the cutscenes were just too much for that mappack and I felt they interrupt the game unecessary also they ran soo slow.

Definitely a mixed bag. I think the most significant change that could have been made to improve this pack is to do some editing – it was too long in my opinion, and very repetitive in parts. I think chopping a good 25 to 40% would have gone a long way toward making an enjoyable experience.
There are some good ideas here. I like some of the puzzles (like finding grapple spots) and the combat is definitely solid (although certainly difficult). Everything is Xen-like, but the feeling of Xen is never really captured here. There is normal gravity, and things are way too blocky to really look like the more organic and rocky terrain of the Xen we know.
What also dooms this pack to a middle-of-the-road recommendation are the weird quirks. There are a number of cutscenes, and most are too long and really show you nothing. Some of the level changes are ill placed, and almost none of them allow you to keep a squad of soldiers with you which is frustrating.
I did like the tough combat. It was never too much, but was pretty challenging in parts. Make good use of your squad and particularly medics and you should not have to cheat. You do get all the unique Op4 weapons to play with, and you fight a good mix of Race X and Xen aliens so there it does feel like a decent Op4 pack overall.

Someone can help me with the error “MOD_numforname: ingpin.mdl”?
Can someone help me how to play this map? Even I installed with the Gauge. The map selection still didn’t show at the bar. Don’t know how to start.
