This competition received two entries. I admit, I was hoping for more, but maybe next time.
Below are the two entries.
You can either save to your computer with a right click, or if you have a compatible browser just left click and they will play.
Brian’s HEV Theme James’s HEV Theme
I chose James’s theme as the winner as I felt it was a little more atmospheric and foreboding. But that’s just my opinion.
Thanks to both Brian and James for entering.
I’m pleased to announce another TREE competition.
This time it’s music related.
I would like you to create a replacement piece of music for the HEV theme from Half-Life 1.
Here it is:
It must be exactly the same length, so it can be replaced in-game.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
One entry will receive one $10 dollar game via Steam, so make sure you have a Steam account!
The closing date for entries is
10:00AM GMT Monday 13th August 2012
Please send an email with your entry as an attachment. MP3s only please.
I’m not really a musician, but I would think this is actually very constraining. For this theme I’d think that maybe +- 10 seconds or something would work as well, while giving some freedom to the musicians?
I’m no musician myself, but I worried that if I didn’t ask for the same length there might be a problem with the timing. That said, if everybody sends stuff a bit longer or shorter and it works in-game, then I’m cool with that.
You got a copy and paste error, prizes says “one story” should be something like “one score?”
Fixed, thanks.
It has to be the same style or just something that fits?
Something that fits the situation.
this was a tough one… the genre of half life music is unique and very difficult to replicate… however I given it a go….
i didnt want to use any samples from the game since that defeats the object… I think phillip was looking for something different
heres some trivia come info….. a guy called “kelly bailey” composed the music for all the half life games …( including hl2 and the episodes ) and he also composed music for other valve games such as portal.alien swarm and Left 4 Dead 1 and 2..
his actual title at valve is Senior Game Designer of sound and music, but the most interesting info on this guy is that he lent his face for the CG model of the series” protagonist Gordon Freeman
unfortunately in March 2011 it was confirmed he left the company,so who shall be composing the music for HL3 ? …. im open to offers lol
Mike Morasky, for sure.
After listening to these (2nd entry is quite atmospheric and not hard to imagine replacing the hev song, but both sound like something made in Fruity Loops, no offense) and to the Opposing Force soundtrack which is pretty good in itself, I feel HL music shouldn’t be replaced. Maybe I’m too big of a Kelly Bailey fan but that’s my 2 cents.
couldnt agree more ade…. and thats what made this competition so difficult… how do you replace something which is as close to excellence as you can get
I used magix music maker MX which is a good allround music creation program and it has plenty of features … fruity loops is not much cop in my opinion… it was popular a few years ago but not my kind of program
from the poll it looks like many prefer james entry… but thats cool…. I give it a go….
I don’t know if this is a dumb question or not:
how can I replace an in-game sound?
A wild guess would be: locate the name and location of the sound to be replaced in the gcf of your game, then add a /sound/blabla/ folder (recreate location) to your game installation, and place the new sound there under same name.
