Are you brave enough to explore the G-Man’s mansion? In this slightly scary mod you have to work your way through a mansion looking for keys and fighting enemies. Expect some surprises and maybe a few hidden items. Play in the dark with the lights out to get the best effect. Unless you are too scared. Want me to call your mommy?

Whilst I am not a fan of dark and scary mods I quite enjoyed this one. It must be hard making scary mods because I presume the types of things you can do is limited.
Of course music is very important in this style of mod and the author seems to have chosen well.
Visuals
The early parts of the mod seem mostly realistic but sometimes there was too much light for the amount of bulbs etc. The latter part of the mod suffered from the distance issue in SOurce, where everything looks really bright and is an opposite silhouette.
Gameplay
Actually there were some nice aspects to this mod and I suggest you jump to the next section if you don’t like spoilers. I quite liked the idea that the enemies ignored you near the end, that was a nice touch. The invisible enemies with the red glowing eyes was also quite nice. I really enjoy the room FULL of fast headcrabs, that was great.
Layout/Design
Overall, it was quite standard with plenty of backtracking and key searching/finding. Some of the rooms seemed a little strange is shape and size but it was an old house! I would hjave liked to have seen a few more glass doors with shadows moving in the background just to offer some suspense, but maybe that’s been over done in scary mods already.
Summary
It’s definitely worth you time, even if you don’t like dark mods, but the last part seemed out of place. It was almost as if the author got bored with having the player inside the mansion and decided to let them out but then his imagination went a little wild.
This won’t give you nightmares.
Very enjoyable!! I love these “dark & scary” mods, and I did play with the lites off!! Phillip, did the author make a Mansion 1&2?? I have #3 in my files. As per e-mail I still have to wear my sunglasses when looking at the site now!!(haha)
I liked this mod, not so scary, just spooky environment. However It crashed right after I got a 4th key due to some Vertex Buffering, I’m gonna try it again however.
Just a question, do I need to play The Mansion 1-3 before playing this one?
No not really there pretty much independent of each other as far as story goes.
Is there a mansion 1??? please provide the link if u have one!
Just finished this one, and I enjoyed it. There were some fairly spooky parts, but I was hoping for a little more of a scare. It’s very early in the morning here and I wanted to beat it before the sun came up to get the full effect 😀
I only got stuck at one point, and that was right after I entered the room with G-Man’s portrait above it. The screen started moving strangely and I ran throughout the mansion with this weird movement effect, and the door that was supposed to open never did. I quicksaved and reloaded, and it no longer moved, and the door opened. I have no idea what happened, but I was able to continue, so.. Either a bug, or I somehow opened the door by accident.
There were a few things in the mod that are still a mystery to me. I may very well have missed something, but I was able to complete the mod without figuring out their purpose. The laundry room with the grubs had what I thought was a trap door. I couldn’t open it or get to it. The outdoor area through the broken glass had a gate that I expected to be able to go through. It also had some machinery that I thought I would need to activate for some purpose. Maybe I’m just used to being force-fed every interactive item in video games, but I kept going back to these things expecting something to open up.
Most likely I missed a few things and that should explain a lot. I did say it was very early in the morning, and I haven’t been to sleep so my senses aren’t as keen as they should be :P. Also, did I miss the SMG? I kept getting ammo for it but I never found the gun.
All in all, it was an enjoyable mod and definitely worth playing through, but I probably wouldn’t play it more than once. It won’t make you crap yourself, but if you’re looking for a Resident Evil-style puzzle mod, this is worth checking out.
forgot to mention one thing, there’s a medkit floating in the water in the tower below the stairs, and after I drained the water, the medkit floated in the air. Just a small thing.
I’m a little lost here, I tried to get into Gman’s room (the one with his face painted above) but can’t get unless noclipping. I have found the master key already, in the dinning room. Did I miss something? Alas, very nice mod, it has a nice design and it’s fun to play and spray some bullets in some zombies.
Yes, you need to visit some more rooms before you can visit the G-Man’s room.
I couldn’t find a way through the dining room floor, and gave up after a while. Hunting for keys and beating headcrabs with an axe just isn’t my cup of tea. I think I’ll go play Mission Improbable again. 🙂
Jeff, (I know spoiler) look up at the celing and shoot at the support beams for that thing hanging in the center!! 😉
I’ll give that a shot, but they looked far sturdier than the indestructible furniture I took out my frustration on. 🙂
Or, with no bullets, climb from lamp to lamp until you arrive to the lamp. Axe the wooden supports and you’ll fall to the ground […] breaking it. Nerdier but also “werks” 😀
Same here, couldn’t get through the dining room door’s ( east tower ) to proceed on, so I gave in and quit..( yeah, I’m a quitter ) especially if the game play is BORING..
The key to the dining room is under water at the bottom of the east tower. I’m sure I’ll keep going one day when I’ve got a few minutes to kill. 🙂
Thanks Jeff, I might give it another try…
Noclip?
In my post above I told ya’all how to solve the problem!! Come on don’t quit give it a try!! Geez this was an “EASY” mod even on “HARD” and I’m an old man!!! (63)
Well, have played it now.
I can guess that it is pretty hard to create a horror map for a game where you can turn on your light everytime you want, but as the themansion3, he made some really nice shocking moments. I liked the beginning the most, the mansion, rooms where suddenly enemies come out of everywhere (that headcrab room was so fantastic!), but instead of the mansion 3 the author tried to challenge the player in a harder way. The challenge becomes sometime too hard and annoying, e.g. that fight against the antlion guard in the small room. Also the last part was so weak, it wasn’t worth to play. There is no challenge, you just stand on your platform and shoot on the other until all enemies are dead. The striders standed too low, so they didn’t hit you but you could easily destroy them. And then when you meet the gman again, you are happy to get a final fight but all what you get is a thend. It seems that the mapper wanted to use the fog of the mansion 3 again, but it just doesn’t look that good on such wide areas, in mansion 3 the fog scene was quite awesome.
Not scary, a bit shocking and a good timekiller

Ok, I really enjoy this mod, but actually I’m stuck. I killed the antlion in the attic, then I entered in the G-man’s room, but nothing happens. Did I miss something? Oh, and something else: from this part, I can’t kill anything and nobody can kill me.
After the G-men have said “That will be all for now”, go back down to the main area with the Hunter and Antlion Worker are fighting. A door has open to a room with a glass table and the G-Man behind it.
Go in.
After that go upstairs to the part with the machinery and open the huge doors on the right. It may take a while but they should open.
Maybe it’s just me, but I find this mod to be on the ugly side and the gameplay is far from good IMHO. The beginning is fine and somewhat scary indeed (I especially liked the music), but it goes rapidly downhill from there. A few more nice touches throughout the mod (like the cinema) just aren’t enough to make it enjoyable… Certainly not terrible, but not good either!
Doesn’t seem to work for me, anyone else having a problem with it?
I’ve put the “The Mansion 4” folder into my C:/Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/SourceMods folder, I also have The Mansion 3 aswell, that works fine but TM4 Doesn’t show at all. Any help?
It was okay.
The library, with the fast headcrabs/zombies was well done.
I’m stuck in the Dining room. I don’t know what to do can anyone help?
I am pretty sure you need to smash something and I think it is above you.
just finally played this it was ok, too many doors and not enough direction. It did have a number of glitches, doors not opening first try(even with proper key) backtracking. overall it is worth the play, nothing special. Quick save often as this seemed to fix some of the bugs on reload
Yeyy this is another Play it Later, I think this guy eho developed this was kind of obssesed with the mansion map like, tough here his levels of curiosity and expereminantation with Source were higher than the previous releases.
Here is the best of this releases, tough is a really disorganized mod where many paths and doors are really confusive, despite of all that it gave me the impression that’s actually the kind of mansionthe wierd G-Man should live.. funny detail.. mmm, here the ennemys were more and better than previous ones, and that little hunter combat in one part of the mannsion was a cool touch.
Well in my opinion this worths the effort and is perfect to play when ther’s nothing much more to do, and have a nice time, maybe on a cold raniy day…

While I played this mod a long, long time ago and didn’t post my review, I want to just stick my rating in here. I love it, though I did have some issues early on with not being able to figure out exactly what to do and how to get it done, there are so many things in this mod that are really well done.
The clever use of weapons, and the need to actually look around and figure out where you need to go makes this a fun little mod. I think the length of time I took to play it was for my first run, but I think I can generally go through it in less than 45 minutes after that first run.
The use of sounds and tension was absolutely perfect. I really love the whole of the map, plus since I adore Gman anyway it feels like an appropriately creepy spot for him to call his lair. (hell I’m adapting it as part of Repurposed, as his actual mansion… O.O)
The ending is a bit nonsensical, but still a lot of fun.
However….
***Now that the site’s been moved all the screenshots are broken! Phillip! Is that going to get fixed?***
Also, since Steampipe has changed things, is there an easy instruction on how to get the game to use the right files? It won’t even start now, and I’m honestly not sure how to adapt the game info file to use the correct game in its new location. I really, really want to be able to properly play it again – the closest I’ve come has been to put the folders into Gmod and slop around in it there, but many of the custom textures (such as the library’s bookshelves, the artwork on the walls, and such) are all completely broken there.
Halp! 😀

It’s a little difficult for me to tell if this modification was meant to be “Scary”. It did have more than a few elements I really enjoyed that you usually don’t see in other modifications.
Pros:
1.Cut-Scenes
2.A Basic Set Up To Make The Mod More Appealing To The Eye
3.There Is A Lot Of Attention To Detail If You Look At The Level Design The Paintings, The Court-Yard, The Mansion Itself Ect
Cons:
1.It’s A Little Difficult To Say If There Was Enough N.P.C.’s To Fight Or Not
2.Near The End Fighting The N.P.C.’s Outside The Manor Didn’t Really Fit With The Mod’s Environment
3.What Purpose Did You Have To Get Into This Mansion? I Was Left Thinking This Question And Since There Is No Back-story There Is No Way Of Knowing
I know this is an older mod, and I’ve already made my review (it stands 🙂 ) but I’m having trouble getting this one to run now that Steam has moved everything around again.
This mod requires, at least as far as I can tell, either Episode 1 or SDK2006 – that sdk may be the problem I’m having, as it basically no longer exists. I’ve managed to get its gameinfo halfway correct – it does now run the introduction scene which it hadn’t before I altered it.
(What comes with the game is app 420, tools 211; and search paths ep2, episodic, hl2 –
I changed it to read as the above help thread said, to 215/211, and sourcetest, hl2)
However, after changing the info.txt file while it does give me the intro, it doesn’t load any of the custom textures properly (so instead of seeing headcrabs walking along in front of custom walls in a corner, it’s headcrabs walking around frightful pink and black checkerboards).
I’m not clear what the help thread means when it says, “4. Extract the scenes folder from the half-life 2 content.gcf and copy this to the mod’s scenes directory.” – there isn’t a scenes directory in this mod, anywhere, so I can’t copy this (I assume the gameinfo.txt file?) there.
I just reinstalled the game, along with the other two, and while Mansion 2 works (I haven’t tested 3) this one definitely does not, and it’s the one I want to play.
Any help please?
Good Day
Try using this to get it to work, sorry that is jumbled, but this was how I got it to work. Change the GameInfo.txt located in the mod directory make sure everything is aligned properly.
If one line of code is off even a little you will run into problems.

Hi, thanks for the reply. This causes my game to simply crash before starting up, so if there are supposed to be formatted spaces, they’re now missing because of the lack of code tags in comments here.
I’m gonna bump this again, because I really want to play this mod once more, and can’t- it still crashes after a white-screen not playing the intro properly, and while I did get it to work years ago somehow, as I say above it’s still quite broken – and that text above doesn’t work.
Has anyone ever found IMUS to maybe convert this (or if someone else knows how) to a garry’s mod map? because all I truly want is screenshots without black and purple checkerboards, and that doesn’t outright crash.
Download this patch. I just did and it works fine now.
https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-mansion-4-g-man-residence/downloads/the-mansion-4-patch-source-sdk-2013
I’m still getting the “Can’t find background image materials/console/startup_loading.vtf” error, this happens just as it’s meant to exit the first screen, I suppose – but even that isn’t working, as all I see is a pure white screen without any animation or images at all. The patch either doesn’t address this, or isn’t being used. I’ve got 2013 upcoming working and tested, put the patch in, will try another location for it, but… this is very frustrating.
Well addendum, it started up when I finally got it in a different folder, but still has no way to start a new game. The ‘start’ popup is completely missing any image or chapter, and does nothing when clicked. This is stupidly frustrating. :/
