  1. Phillip says Maybe

Kiwi Production make mods with a single minded focus and I respect that. Unfortunately that focus is not the kind of result that I particularly enjoy.

PlanetPhillip is all about single player maps and mods set within the Half-Life universe and it’s those kinds of mods that interest me. That’s not to say this is a bad mod but it is a very specialized kind of mod.

I quite enjoyed the surface section, although, as usual it could have done with more beta testing. For example, I managed to avoid falling into the pit with the Antlion guard.

Once I enter the underground section things got really funky. The problem for me is one of motivation. I like environments that seem real, that seem realistic. There was one section where the players has to get to an entrance nearly the ceiling. You do this by jumping of moving columns. It made no sense to me and I kept dying, so I cheated. I also cheated once I got to the top.

If the player is told that he will be tested etc it would make sense but it seemed to arbitrary to me.

Of course you could argue that nobody would know what kind of layout and design an alien would create and whilst that is true the addition of Combine soldiers brought the player back to reality.

The new weapons are ok, but no more. They look too bulky and the ammo on one ran out way too quickly.

I felt the combat was to simple and I eventually I gave up and used GOD mode.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, I respect authors who have a vision and bring that vision to fruition, I just wished that vision was set in the HL world and the time and effort was spent making a real story-driven mod, as apposed to a situation-driven mod, thatkept me immersed and interested rather than frustrated.

No doubt some PP readers will love it, and I am happy for you, but as with Gateways, sometimes it’s better to use an existing setting rather than create something new.

There were some nice ideas and I aprticualrly liked the spining things at the beginning, and if this same idea had been used in a traditioanl COmbine citadel setting then it could have been fantastic rather than just “nice”.

    Are pretty coloured textures enough?

I found this on Download.com a few weeks ago and gave it a go. The above ground bit was OK but after that I had the the urge to wear flairs and play Jimi Hendrix at full volume. It’s certainly different but I’m now looking for a tie dye tank top.

Wow!-You may want to wear some shades with this one. Very bright, pyschedilic, day-glo colors and very sci-fi futuristic look to it. It’s a fun mod but no real storyline. Just a trip through the looking glass as you fall down the rabbit hole, so to speak. It’s different and worth playing. Alof of work went into this.

I am not sure if I want to play through this one or not. Just love the above references to the 70’s and Alice in Wonderland, keep them coming.

Having downloaded from the above link the files were established in my Steam menu but the game does not load. Any ideas before I repeat the download and re-install.

  5. Havent tried it yet but I just installed it and it started fine.Maybe just restart steam or reinstall the mod incase a file got corrpted during extraction.

  6. Mel

    andyb, when did you download?

  7. couple days ago I think.Unless you get an error in winrar ir should be ok.

    Maybe?

I have played (probably) almost to the end – and I think it’s OK. The colour schemes are very sort of “60’s and Sergeant Pepperish, but it’s a constant theme throughout the mod which may or may not be artyfarty, or something, it’s beyond me, but it’s not that OTT.
But it’s quite playable. and some good puzzles, and combat which definitely need saves beforehand, “cos you will get killed first time.
In a few places I thought “that’s impossible”, but it wasn’t 2nd or 3rd time (I played on medium).

Love this Mod! The custom weapons were terrific! and the gameplay was very confusing but great!!

I really enjoyed your how quirky some of your maps where. However, some of the levels I could only play for a short period of time before I got a headache. It was fun but for your any other mods you make you may want to improve on your stories. I just found it a little lacking, and story is a big part of games for me. Of course so is the fun factor, and this gun was incredibly fun, although the new guns textures seemed a little off to me. Please take these considerations when you start making another mod.

  11. Maybe?

I just re-read my review of Gateways. Wow, I really hated that mod! πŸ™‚ This one was a good deal better, but yes… the underground sections were about as senseless as Kiwi’s previous release. I can forgive the psychedelic colors, but the shooting gallery arena and push-button deaths of caged victims — which seem to be signatures — are still unexplainable and unforgivable.

On the positive side, the innovations in weaponry and physics tweaks were excellent. If only they could be defined with non-claustrophobic, enjoyable level design.

  12. Play It Now!

Wow, I really dig that psychedelic look and feel! well done! πŸ™‚ though it certainly will not appeal to everyone.
Besides the look they also have tons of other new stuff in there!
You should check it out, I had plenty of fun with it!

PS: Extra kudos to the music! πŸ˜‰

I found this map to be alright, although towards the end, the combat got way too confusing, with way too many combine soldiers.

The last boss fight was very creative, and would like to see more of that, but again, put less combine and enemies. Way too hectic, but

    fun mod πŸ™‚

A decent mod. I really am a fan of the surreal-type maps, as they really seem to gather my attention. This mod was, well, certainly surreal. There were two main flaws I saw in this game: The glitches, and the difficulty.

First off, there were a number of glitches I noticed. There was one instance, in the beginning, where you’re supposed to fall into a trap with an antlion guard. I managed to miss this completely. Later on, there was a massive group of enemies, all of which died by themselves, not a shot fired.

Second, was the difficulty level. I found this game to be immensely hard, even on the lower difficulties. The final boss battle was particularly difficult, with no health packs, and I found myself often resorting to godmode when I couldn’t pass a level.

All in all, the pros outweigh the cons, in my opinion, and The Great Forever Tomorrow is definitely worth a play.

  15. Play It Now!

I liked this mod, for a change of pace. Too bad I played it almost right after Gateways.

If you don’t like surreal or psychadelic-themed environments, you won’t like this mod. But the island at the beginning was neat. (I, too, managed to not fall into the pit with the antlion guard; I was happy about it, though. πŸ™‚ )

What I would love to see is someone who can finish the boss fight without cheating, record it and post it on youtube. (There is no way I will ever be able to do it. I had to use god mode. Next time I play this, I’ll just let the universe as we know it end, or whatever the message is if you bypass the fight.)

  16. Play It Later

This mod is good at the beginning.. then is ok but still good.. but like after 30 minutes you find some many rooms full of enemies that you gonna have to use god mode cause it’s IMPOSSIBLE TO SURVIVE! D: but when you use god mode is funny cause you feel like chuck norris kickin the combine ass πŸ˜€ so much fun! xD

  17. Play It Now!

This was an awesome mod. It definitely has flaws: the difficulty is INSANE in some areas, provoking the obligatory godmode. Also the voice acting, while reasonably good, needed a LOT of editing to remove the recording scratchies and sounds that just shouldn’t have been there.

The levels were very interesting. I thought that almost all the puzzles were very well thought out, challenging without being impossible, and more over: FUN. It was very refreshing to see such clever puzzles, actually. I am not a console-type, I’ve never played most of the games which would have had such things (including the ridiculously hard end battle) in them so I really didn’t know what to expect.

I had a lot of fun in this mod. It only took a couple hours to play through. I loved the visuals. Yes, they’re kind of trippy – but after a while I came to really appreciate that fact. The way that they used colors and reflectivity, bloom and lighting was all impressive.

Now, the end battle was SO freaking hard. πŸ™‚ I was godmoded from the moment I stepped out to the platform, and I doubt that anyone would be able to play through that section without it. If you have: kudos to you. You deserve a medal πŸ™‚ But also because I am NOT a console-vet, the solution to the ending was not obvious to me until quite a ways in. What I’d say is, increase the length of time between each wave of enemies. They stack so fast and are so hard to defeat on their own without distractions, you really don’t have any time to figure out what to do let alone do it.

The music was AWESOME. I loved all of it. Hardly any of it fit with what I was seeing, but I honestly don’t care, I like both classical and techno – to have them both blended in the mod was fun and a point + for me.

    Five word summary:

    Don’t be afraid to Godmode.

  18. Hec

This is a great mod, is so funky and out of the common line of HL2 classic mod, I love the combat and the maps just a must play now !

  19. Javilin

So far so good..really innovative mod with some good puzzles.
But I am stuck in the part underground with the colored tubes; got to through the last tube where you had to jump over the hole with a fast moving lift in case you fall in. can not find where to go after that (26.jpg)

Never mind..discovered the lift takes you up to another level..before it just killed me..maybe because I tried to jump out of it!

  20. Hec
    Personal Favourite

Well I definitely had to revise and enmend my previous recommendation, because the 1st one was pretty short so lame and provided short information too.

This mod is one of those especial exentric creatures in HL 1 and 2 modding. I mean the textures speak for themselves once u are in this mod, and that’s maybe the most seductive and great part of it…, you are in a strange exotic world, where u will found combat and keen puzzles.

I think some people really hate collorful textures but I like them because they are atractive, they create an exotic enviromental experience the whole process, this is also perfect for get out of the classic rutine of grey-like CMB environments.

This mod is to have fun and shoot ennemies in the combats u will find in there, if is for the combat, at least this mod won’t disappoint you, because there is a well ammount of it in there.

Anyway, this is maybe a so lovely mod, because is that great exentric creature in HL2 world, allows you to get away from the rutine and play in cool crazy envrionemnts, but allways with a warranty of combat and entertainment all of the way.

  21. Unknown

In my opinion the best way to reference this modification is based on it’s design. Even though this modification didn’t particularly have any true meaning too it or set goal it was still very fun.

It has a variety of Abstract Geometric Shapes, and Colors. This modification gives off the impression some sort of “Crazy Artist” had nothing better to do with their time, and started painting on a canvas randomly just to see what would happen.

This modification kind of gives off that sort of perspective too me. Crazy, Wild, and No Initial Meaning At All yet Elegant. This is as close as you get if you are looking for a Half-Life 2 modification based on a L.S.D. Trip.

    Please Be Cautious:

As a mental not to anyone who wishes to play this modification there is a lot of flashing lights, and swirling colors, so please take that into consideration before playing this mod.

    Pros:

    1.Abstract
    2.Multiple Puzzles
    3.Unique Trap Mechanics
    4.It’s A Fairly Long Modification Game-Play Wise
5.A Perfect Blend Of Fun, Mysterious, Easy, Hard And Difficult

    Cons:

1.The Ending Of This Modification Was Rather Short Sad To Say
2.All Of Those Colors And Shapes May Not Be Pleasing To Everyone

  22. Maybe?

This… I really don’t know what to say about this.

I love the very first part, exploring and finding out how to get to things was really fun. After that, it turns very surreal and ABSOLUTELY INSANE. If you think the visuals are crazy from the screenshots, just wait until you actually play it. This is one of the most ridiculously difficult games I have ever played. There are tons (literally) of enemies, combine soldiers and elites most commonly. I never actually found the new weapons, but there’s so much ammo for the old ones, I think you could play through HL2, Ep1 and Ep2 with it without running out. Then again, I’m pretty sure there are more enemies in this than in the entire Half-Life series combined. Especially in the penultimate map… the last room is absolutely insane, but I got through it without cheats on normal. I couldn’t let the game beat me, it was DESIGNED to beat me!

There are also a lot of jumping puzzles; some people love them, some people hate then, I’m indifferent to them. There’s a really cool puzzle in one of the maps where sections of the ceiling come down to squish you, and an even cooler version of that in the penultimate level.

    *Spoiler Alert*
The final boss is possibly the hardest part in the game… and I mean possibly literally. The enemies it spawns are random, so either it could go easy and just spawn you some rollermines and manhacks, or it could go hard on you and spawn some combine and death lasers. I’m not too fond of the boss itself, but its design is awesome, and I must say that defeating it was massively satisfying, especially since I did it without cheats. You only figure out the story at the end, but it’s a really, really cool story.
    *End of Spoilers*

I can’t tell you if I liked this mod because I just can’t decide. I absolutely loved some parts, but others were awful. I just really don’t know whether or not to recommend this and who to recommend it to, so I must quote my rating.

    Maybe?

  23. I just loaded in and there’s a bunch of missing textures and errors. Do I have to have Counter Strike Source or something?
