Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

“You are William Nicholas Alexander Raskolnikov Myshkin Freeman (yes, “Bill Freeman” is really Russian, bet you never knew that) the hardened Communist and pot-head (see Theme Song). You have infiltrated a secret base of the evil capitalist pigs who are trying to take over the world. Your cover job as a research scientist at the Coke-a-cola/McDonalds/USAF joint research centre has given you access to the devastating new technologies being developed to enslave the world.

You have done your best to halt their progress through the world. How could you know that people would actually pay money for pathetic slivers of “meat product” in tiny plastic rolls? Or that people would buy a “diet” version of a drink even though you took out the only decent part of the drink to make it?

To atone for your failures you have decided to steal the latest prototype plane being developed at the research centre. Although the poor design quality and build standards (the “Made in the USA” sticker is particularly frightening), make you concerned over whether it can actually fly at all, you decide that you must take the chance.

Determined to save the world, you jump on the truck to take you into the centre….

Hints from the author

Please do not read this, ever.

1. To get the HEV suit – It’s in the locker room, in the locker marked ‘Freeman’.

2. To fly the plane – Climb into the cockpit, and duck when the glass comes down.

3. To open the door in that level with the crashed plane – Go to the crashed plane and press the button on the joystick to fire the missile to kill the guard (It’s an ultra-smart missile, specially developed by the USAF for precisely this purpose). Go into the guard’s hut, where there is a lever that operates the big door.

4. To get past the marines in the following level – You can’t take on all those marines (I hope), so wait until an APC comes, jump on top it, and hide inside it until you get past the bit with the helicopter. Then get out and keep walking along the road until you see a small door in the wall. Go in there, switch the light on, grab the crowbar, and smash through the manhole in the floor.

5. The sewer bit – There are three ways out of the sewer, not counting the one you came in by. One leads to a warehouse full of marines – you will have trouble getting past these with just a crowbar and an mp5, so don’t go there yet. The second leads to a corridor with a room leading off it saying ‘Weapons storage’. There are weapons in here, but the door is locked and you don’t know the code. However, if you look above the combination lock panel you will see a wire leading from it, up the corridor and outside the window at the end. Unfortunately there are marines in the way, but you don’t need to take them on as they are absorbed in their own fascinating conversation. Go back down into the sewer, and walk all the way to the end, till you get outside. Climb up the ladders until you come to the top. You can see the wire, and a section of it has come loose and lost its insulation, allowing you to cut it with your crowbar, thus putting the lock out of action. Go back down to the sewer and up to the weapons storage room, and you can push the door open now.

6. You have to actually fight them now.

7. The big warehouse – When you get into that huge room with the crane and crates in it, get on board the crane and press use, it operates like a train. Drive it into the door at the end to smash it open.

8. The fusebox – At the end of the second big warehouse room is a small room with a fusebox marked ‘Security Override’ in it. Pressing this will allow you to get through some doors that were previously locked.

9. The Self-destruct – Go back to the first big warehouse, and climb up the ladder onto the bridge, where a door is now opened to let some marines in. Go back through there, and make your way to the pyramid, where you can now get into the control room. Press the Self-destruct button in there.

10. The Escape hatch – Make your way back to the room with the monitors and computers; you can now get into the escape hatch. Get into the train and drive to freedom before the whole place blows up with you in it. (I admit this part is a little unrealistic. Just a little.).

11. The End – Go into the prefab building, blow away the vent in one of the rooms, and use the desk or filing cabinet to climb through it into the adjoining room.

Worth the play: this have funny things and the start in action is unusual and tactic ^^.

    Maybe?

It’s ok if you are short of a play but dont expect too much, it’s also fairly easy.

  3. I’d like to give this mod a try, but it locks up after the intro. Anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this?

  4. Phillip says Maybe

Contrary to Mel’s experience I found this quite hard. There’s a section near the beginning where you must use movable cover and that’s not really made clear until you die a few times.

Anyway, I thought the maps and design were generally quite interesting, not perfect for sure, but still more than just box areas.

The level transitions were a little strange sometimes, with doors disappearing but at least there were no changes in the middle of a firefight!

I didn’t bother reading the background, because if a story is not told “in-game” I am not interested.

I felt the plane and missile were funny but silly.

The ride near the end was great but would have been nice to have seen more.

The ending, well, let’s just say you fly off into the sunset.

Like yesterday 100SDoN post, the mapping was okay but it lacked atmosphere. I never got excited playing it.

Probably one of the most memorable endings in Half-Life mods.

    Play It Now!

“The evil thing” from the author of the fantastic one Heart of evil, is a cool mod where u are an agent who has to steal a combat aircraft prototype, I like that detail and more the fact u actually get on the plane and “fly it” over all u have tough combats in here which means action, and also I think u really must play this if u loved Heart of evil, they are not conectted at all but is from the author of HoE, which also has another mod but for Op Force, and i’ve never had the opportunity to play it maybe some day i’will. I could say u can play this if u want action and combat, altough I agree in the fact that this has a lack of atmosphere and passion but have good maps in it, my rate is more sentimental, because I really loved HoE, so I have to play and most probably like the works of the author.

    Maybe?

This one was pretty mediocre all around. It’s a solid Maybe? for me.

This pack really takes a long time to get going. First you get the suit and explore the home base, etc. (Although do keep an eye out for some funny mission briefings on chalkboards and such). Then you have a couple of pretty useless vehicle sequences and wandering around before anything really happens.

The mapping is pretty good, although you’ll really need to explore to be able to handle the tough parts of this pack. Hint: if you’re not loaded up on weapons before engaging the full squad of grunts, you missed something.

The one thing I really liked about this pack was the touches of humor, although a couple times they delve into the silly. Overall this is probably worth a play but if you miss it, no big deal. This author went on to much bigger and better things in the Half-Life world.

  8. Play It Later

Pretty good, but I found this mod impossible if you just charge in and try to fight everybody. It was only after reading the notes that I could play and finish without cheating. Even then it was extremely hard. Like the train ride and the computer voices!

  9. Play It Later

Before I read the authors hints I found this one frustrating as some parts were not intuitive, but as a whole I had some fun!

Although the author tried to be humorous the gags were a little weak, but the missile did raise a smirk. When you fire it you wait to hear the bang and then go to see what happened only see it hit the guard box, it’s as if it was waiting to show you what it could do!! Despite later finding I should have got into the APC, I used it as cover from the enemies and got past them with a little damage. Getting into the APC is not that obvious.

The look and feel for the game were OK for me, but the combat ranged from too easy to hard rather than balanced throughout and why do so many mods have to have assassins?
Near the end, be careful and duck when you get into the escape car, I didn’t the first time and was pulled out.
10. Think Twice

This time we are a communist, who is going to sabotage capitalists to prevent them from taking over the world. The mod starts with the truck ride, the environment is not pleasing and the distances are too long. The fact of truck ride reminds of very hard mod Unknown Faction.

The beginning reminds of Vlokam1: the details are there, but they are rectangular and boring. We enter the plane and fly…

…We come to ourselves in the desert. There are a fence and a soldier ahead. There’s a broken plane around the corner. Some red button appeared there. We pressed it – and it launched a guided missile which flies to the enemy soldier. I liked this moment very much.

Behind the red door we are supposed to hide in the tank, but when I got that, the tank was gone. Then I found out that it rides in circles, but it was too lade – I already used cheats.

When I exited the canalisations I found myself at the storage, where I started to break crates, but they all were empty. What a disrespect! I had only 22% health!!! I had to take another path, outdoor. But there’s a dead end and two soldiers laugh. Another disrespect. I broke some wire there, don’t know what it did.

Thankfully, there’s another exit from the canalisations, which leads to the corridor with blue and white brick walls. There is a storage, where the author give us weapons, many ammo, batteries and health as an apology for past disrespect. Excellent, I forgive him.

Then we go through boring levels and fight with soldiers and helicopters. From precise weapons we have only the crossbow, and there’s often a distance between us and the enemy, so the battles are not fun. There will be only 2 interesting events:
Breaking door with the container and fast train ride.
Overall, I didn’t enjoy this mod and don’t recommend it to you.

  11. Maybe?

This pack was decent. The only thing that really stood out was the humor which was funny. The combat is a grunt fest with it being pretty boring. The highlight of the pack was the the vehicle ride at the end.Give it a try if your bored.

  12. Ten Four Reviews

I was pleased to see that this level has a good, strong plot. Although it does feature the fairly stereotypical military base, this isn’t just any old military base and you actually have some sense of purpose. But better still are the jokes. Yes, this is level with humour, and it works. I was genuinely laughing out loud at some of the gags. I don’t want to spoil them, so I’ll just say that you should make an effort to read the signs on the walls. Oh, and the ending is pretty cool (it’s a nice action-movie cliché).

The combat was slightly disappointing. Heavy use is made of marines to the extent that it begins to get stale. Ninjas and even Apaches make an appearance, but this isn’t really enough to counter the unimaginative use of Half-Life’s standard enemy. Generally the marines seem to turn up in large groups – suddenly charging through a door after an alarm sounds, and although this can sometimes be effective, something similar happens 4 times during the level. This isn’t too say that it is actively dislikeable – far worse mistakes can be made, but I do feel that this is the weak point of the level.

On the other hand there is a more than just combat to keep you interested. There are some nice set-pieces, including some cool interaction with the scenery – one scene involving a crashed plane is particularly satisfying to watch. Many of the set-pieces take the form of some kind of puzzle. Generally these were fairly simple and obvious and didn’t cause any frustration.

The architecture is above average. It’s not as polished as professional work or some of the better amateur levels, but there is plenty of interesting construction. The outdoor scenery was done particularly well, although there are certain places where draw distances can be a problem – objects in the distance will suddenly disappear when you get too far away. Not really a major issue, but it’s not nice to see such an obvious visual error. Importantly though, all the locations and scenery tie in with the plot and the well thought out layout feels like a real location, as opposed to a dull series of rooms and corridors.

It isn’t as polished in certain respects as some of the excellent levels that we sometimes see for Half-Life. But the comedy aspect of this level alone makes it stand out from the crowd, and most of the other elements are up to scratch, so this is well worth downloading.

  13. Play It Later

Ah I’m in the mood for some good old nostalgic mods. I actually kept this in good memory but I must say nowadays it seems a lot harder.

Or I’m simply older than back in 99 (surprise) the amount of marines used here as your main foe and pretty much your only foe well maybe except for leeches and the Ichthyosaur is tiresome. Be advised the last named monster if just eye candy. Fall down there and you can’t get back up.

Note to players & Phillip: The mod requires you to copy your c_dll and dlls folder of your valve folder into the mod folder. Otherwise you won’t be able to switch weapons in game. Some Steam update ruined things once.

Mapping wise is this package is indeed interesting. Be it faked shadows over fans, or light shining in. Not many mappers knew that tiny shadow trick especially back then. That plus some lovely outside areas rounding it up.

While the mod takes some time to get the action going I personally enjoy that. Give people some time to appropriate the levels. So the car & plane ride were quite refreshing and so was the typical James Bond escape hatch.

My advice play it on easy as there are barely any med packs and stations to be found.

Ps: Make sure to copy your valve cl_dll and dll folder into the mod folder otherwise you won’t be able to switch weapons. Some steam update ruined that once when folder locations changed. So old mods will no longer locate the valve folder. They’re at least regarding the dll folders acting as their own game instead of being a mod.

  14. Maybe?

Well, this is interesting, after reading the readme I thought this was going to be some kind of joke mod, but after a few gags in the intro the game turns into your standard grunfest, now, there were some good and creatives here and there, like the escape at the end or using a container to break open a gate (although some were a little obtuse, like accessing the weapon storage, you should definitely read the game hints if you ever get stuck) the problem is that the mapping is kinda boring at times, and damn, this mod gets really hard due to the low amount of med-kits and stations, and while I usually tolerate grunfests, they were starting to get really tiresome by the end

Overall, I think is worth a try, it has some good and fun ideas that I would like to see again, but they are bundled with a mediocre gameplay

  15. Play It Now!

A well designed and executed experience. Detailed maps and fun scripted sequences. The creator went on to create “Heart of Evil” a classic HL mod. This one is more than a humble beginnings however and deserves playing.

  16. Play It Now!

    This mod has:

    – Creative and funny textures
    – Interesting architecture
    – Lots of detailing
    – Clever puzzles
    – Intuitive progression

    and

    – an almost complete lack of health

If this mod were to be rebalanced it would be in “Personal Favorite” territory for me but as it stands I have to play a lot of in God Mode.

There’s a good handful of custom textures which back up the humorous VO and text file. The set pieces are quite good, I especially liked the faux-stealth section where you hide behind the APC to get past a buttload of grunts.

I would highly recommend playing this if you are a fan of old maps/mods. I’d medium recommend for everyone else.

  17. Personal Favourite

Let’s forgive this guy. His mod is great, but, it would be nice to give more health or reemplace some shotgunner for MP-5 shooters or lower their health. The hangar was tough, the longer you take the more you are in danger. You can’t even place satchels where they come from you are inmediatelly surrounded, I think he places side soldiers on perpose so you don’t rush with the satchels. One satchel do not do too much. I really like the design of the second apache it really shoots rockets and you can hide from them. Assassins are like very resilient as well, they even jump back sometimes and have a high chance to move away quickly.
