Test Lab 16

for Half-Life

7th October 2013

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

This short map won TWHL’s Test Chamber Mapping Competition back in November 2005.

Here is the original brief: “For this competition, you must build a functioning and original test chamber, similar to the one in HL where everything goes wrong. There should be a specimen of some description being tested, and then everything should go horribly wrong (again). You can include other sections in the map if you wish, but you shouldn’t let that detract you from making a detailed and original test chamber.”

  1. Phillip says Play It!

Can’t believe there are little gems like this still waiting to be added to the site.

This one by Kasperg is a beautifully recreated Black Mesa setting that has a touch of humour.

The size is pretty small and the actual battle very limited, but it exudes quality.

I’m just disappointed he never made a fully-fledged mod s et in Black Mesa.

Still, his Source work is superb.

Hey Phillip, are you sure the “SourceMods” folder is the right path to set this up?? is a HL1 one, it shouldn’t be Steamapps/Common/Half-Life????????

    1. Yes, you are right, sorry. You should have seen it was a mistake because it said “Silent Escape”. I forgot to update that from my template. Fixed now.

      1. Hec

Oh yeah thank you Phillip, for a moment I thought this was a kind of special file or something like that..

  3. Play It Later

Unfortunately this mod was very short, but the mapping was amazing and I liked the little touch of humour. The boss fight was very easy and there was very little action. A 4/5!

    Play It Now!

Well, it seems that Kasperg’s works are a synonym of quality, and in this little neat map, there’s no exception.

The goal of recreate a major disaster in a test chamber is well done, the whole mapping is very real and it feels like one of those million parts hidden in BM complex.

Now the Garg. at the end is a nice easy touch to put some fight into the map, which is not the big deal but is OK.

The funny ****** Easter egg was a cool touch and also dedicate the map to that Spaniard beauty queen.

Overall this is a nice map to stay and recreate your eyes.

    – LOL the dedication to Miss Spain is ebin http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/830078380589262398/ED7262D4C38D45E646FF4A196480518BE849DEE7/
    – most doors dont make sound until after theyre opened, like the first part is missing and there’s some overlapping textures in door frames, but the level looks pretty polished
    – haha we’re gon disintegrate Mickey Mouse! http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/830078380589264021/2E70AAD15FF106BF5BAAD378F1191DA54683358E/
    – after running around not knowing where to go for a few minutes after blowing up the Garg, the invisible wall finally disappeared to reveal an elevator mickey 😛 or was it the end? the game doesnt really end
    – theres still an exit door 😛 noclip revealed nothing beyond it tho

This reminded me of a destruction simulation mapping competition for hl1 I think.
Fun for 10 minutes, Play It Later!

    Maybe?

TWHL’s competitions are usually focused on small maps, and that’s exactly what we have here.

There’s not much to it, but what’s there is pretty solid. The test chamber section is well done and everything is connected rather well. There’s a bit of combat at the end which doesn’t really fit but it’s not too detracting. Might be worth a look.

  7. Play It Later

There’s not much to say here, this a pretty short map with almost no combat, only at the against a Gargantua, but it really isn’t that dangerous, I loved the mapping and all the little details, it even has a few easter eggs that add a nice sense of humor to the map, overall, give it a try if you have 10 minutes to spare

  8. Play It Later

Combat is nearly non-existent here, you only get to fight one enemy and that’s it. Visual and map layout looks good at least and that’s pretty much it. Worth a time to play for a short mod
