Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

Author’s Description

Target Practice is a single-player mini-level set in the Nova Prospekt campaign of Half-life 2. This level has a focus on gameplay and is not a visual or environmental piece.

Gordon Freeman has been captured and taken to a Combine facility just outside of Nova Prospekt. Alyx Vance recovers the gravity-gun and gives it to Freeman (the player) which he then must use to escape the Combine facility

This level was created to examine the viability of a type of indirect gameplay. The player has no weapons other than the gravity-gun, and the enemies are too far from the player to attack with physics objects. The idea is for the player to trick the enemies into shooting key points within the level so that the player can progress. My main goal was to use environmental cues (such as lighting and key objects) to show the player what needed to be done.

I really enjoyed this level and have even made it a Hall Of fame 2009 Entry. The reason? Because the player doesn’t fire a weapon, and the level is built around that idea. I love it; “Use the enemy fire to your own advantage”.

I have to admit that I found it quite hard too and didn’t really understand what I was supposed to be doing for a long time, that’s partly because I am an idiot and partly because that should have been made clearer.

It shouldn’t take more than about 10 minutes to play through and the level of detail is enough for you to feel that it is a real situation.

    Enjoy!

It would be okay as part of a larger mod, but on its own it’s nothing to get excited about IMHO.

The idea might not have been done so blatantly before, but using the enemies” weapons against them with the gravity gun isn’t in itself new, surely we’ve all caught and re-thrown grenades before?Still a nice little map, with the emphasis on little, like under 5 minutes!I’m with MikeS on this one.

A little snippet of a map but good fun once you have found which wall is the east wall. Nicely done indeed and the mapper has a great imagination.
I cannot agree with the Hall of Fame rating though.
Gypsy Jim has it right. I’ve often played sections of HL2, Mods & Maps with just the GG. Chucking grenades back to the Combine is great fun & saves on ammo too. There is nothing like the thwack of a crate or barrel on the enemy, especially Zombies.

  5. I understand why most readers don’t agree with my including it in the HOF but I feel that these new gameplay features need recognition. For me it’s a really interesting idea. I know we have been able to catch and trow back grenades etc but this is very different.

Anyway, it’s not going top win Mod Of The Year 2009 but it’s still interesting.

    1. I never managed to catch one of the grenades, so getting the enemy fire to work for me in this map really was innovative.

I think it’s an interesting map that the author built about two ideas he had for encountering enemy without weapons, and from that point of views it work. However, overall this is a very shallow map without building on the novel two initial pieces of action, has such it’s no more then an opening escape sequence and hardly a candidate for mod of the year.

    Maybe?

Unlike the excellent R&D mod, this weaponless experience was incredibly frustrating. It makes me want to grab a RPG and kick some booty. I’ll be right back….. yeah, that was a lot more enjoyable with the RPG. 🙂 It was a nice concept that just didn’t quite work for me. Your carnage may vary.

I think this was a unique map. It would be nice if it were part of a larger project, but it’s fine as is.

However, I think authors should avoid assigning compass directions to various points. Which way is East??? I figured it out, but still–it was dark, the flashlight didn’t illuminate very well, and I thought I was supposed to be looking for a weapon. After that, figuring out which was the North exit wasn’t hard. I guess if you’re going to depend on the compass, educate players before they’re in a tense situation.

Another very small concept map. This time you only have the gravity gun and need to blow up some stuff. You do this using Combine grenades and Hunter flechettes. There are only three things you need to do and they’re all really easy. The atmosphere is pretty good, though, and for having so few rooms they are well decorated. Much like the previous map I played (Betrayal for Ep2) if it were ten to twenty minutes I would absolutely love it, but as it stands now, it’s just too short.
