This is a map of Swedish mapper “Tlax”, it was made for a contest of http://www.leveldesign.nu
As for the story we play once again Gordon Freeman, but this time we are a soldier of the Gman.
After our space station is attacked by soldiers from Earth, we’re sent down to destroy the lasercore..
It’s a short map but the combat can be tough as there are only grunts, but there are at least some tactics required – also because a guard and a scientist have to be alive all the time.
The design is quite good and the combat is challenging – altho there is plenty of ammo and even a rocket launcher.
Unfortunately “Space Lasercore” lacks of more puzzles, playtime and better AI.
Nonetheless it’s fun to play if you like a little gruntfest lunchtime 😉
Pro’s:
-Good mapping, nice architecture and lighting
-Pretty nice combat with lot of ammo (even way too much) – there are also lot of healthkits and HEV batteries
-A few “puzzles” if you want so
-Some cutscenes
-No bugs
Con’s:
-Very short playtime (~5-15 minutes)
-Balancing – there is just too much ammo and the enemy AI is stupid
-No real puzzles
-Disappointing end
Note: If you like grenades / satchels check out the…
army truck
The tag indicating medium length needs to be revised, this map is short, on the verge of very short. It was however a good fun coffee break length map!
The map is not a run and gun game heavy machine guns and rocket launchers at the far end of corridors make sure of that. Overall however if you take it steady and use available cover it is quite easy. What brings in a level difficulty is a gung-ho Barney who doesn’t stay put when you tell him, the blue hat prat runs ahead before you clear an area and gets himself killed, so it’s a mission fail.
The map itself looks quite good and if it wasn’t for the idiot Barney the gameplay is good fun for a short time, the ending was a bit of a disappointment, but for such a small download its not unusual.
At the end of the day this is worth playing, just don’t expect an epic.
Maybe I’m just stupid, but what do I do in the round room with the huge laser in it that Barney and the scientist opened up for me? They have moved to another door that is locked by laser bars but it won’t open…
Sounds like you might need to reload from an earlier save. The scientist and Barney are supposed to disarm one of the laser-bar entries. You then have to destroy the laser.
They did disarm one of the entries to the big laser but I already fired everything at him that I got. Anywhere specific I have to aim?
Well, this is what I did, it may not work for you… Firstly, I destroyed the two glass panels above the two workstations. Then I climb on the “roof” and fired the two rockets I had left and then dropped my one remaining satchel charge down to the bottom and exploded it from a distance.
If you don’t have enough fire power left then I suppose going back to an earlier save would halep and conserve some of the big ammo.
Or simply lob a couple of grenades into the center of the wall surrounding the bottom of the beam, from outside the blue barrier. Grenades go in but the headcrab’s get zapped by the barrier.
This.
You can also unload some contact grenades from the AR towards the lasercore from outside the blue barriers and it should be destoyed after 2 hits.
I think it fair to say by now this is not the most taxing puzzle in the game!!!
Update:
Just went back and tried it, two direct hits from AR grenade’s didn’t work but a third using a hand grenade got the job done. So it seems 3 explosives of your choice gets the job done.
Okay, it’s 3 explosives required, I only can count to A,B,C 😉
Three explosives alone are not enough, I think at least one of them must be dropped into the shaft to make it happen. So if you don’t have any grenades left, you have a problem because the satchel charges can’t be thrown far enough. I ended up firing rockets into the shaft which did the trick! That was no good map design though…
Agreed, when I tried with three sometimes it didn’t work. Getting on the roof and dropping the satchel charge to the base helped.
Naw, c’mon guys!
As it’s a short lil map you should have some spare grenades left, I think I used grenades the first time. But contact grenades from the AR work too, and yes I climbed the roof too, just for looking if it’s possible.
So in my opinion it’s not bad design, I believe it’s made on purpose – why else would be the blue laser barriers? Exactly! To make it not that easy to access the lasercore for destroying it… Makes sense no?
Nevermind, just had to wait, so I’d like to give a personaly fav or something, but I guess that doesn’t work.
Cool little perfect short fun misson, tough I had some problems with barney not reacting to open the main door, the second time I reloaded it worked fine.
We have a very neat map here and the goal is simply and clear, expect ressistance on the way.
Also the ship you get to the space base is cool I like the model.
Yay for little intro/prologue.
That stupid Barney… “Stay” command didnt work for him this time, script made him move and usually he runs for grunts and dies few too often..
I was also about to quit as the responses to opening things didn’t work, however reading here about a restart solved everything.
I really enjoyed this short map, it had some difficult spots and unique challenges.
Overall we have a pretty short but decent map here. It’s mostly combat with grunts, and a couple small puzzles and a handful of scripted events. The quality is solid, but I hesitate to fully recommend this one.
There are a couple frustrations in this one that drag it down. First is that you have to keep Barney alive, but he is scripted to run from point to point just behind you, and a couple times he ran further than I would have liked and was killed, which ends the map. Half-Life’s AI will allow Barney to follow you on command, so I’m not sure why the author forced this action through scripting. The second is that it’s not clear what to do at the big laser (hint: just damage its base to blow it up). But there’s little feedback and no hints here so I was stuck for what to do for quite a few minutes until I read the comments above. I really think this should have at least been hinted at by the mapper.
In all, it’s decent grunt combat assuming Barney doesn’t run into the line of fire, and a nice little mission-based map that you might enjoy. I don’t mean to rag on this map – it’s fun but it can really use a lot of polish.

a nice short sci-fi themed map.
like some other people I couldn’t figure out what to do at the big laser. After I magnaged to destroy it, barney was stuck. well, a little bit buggy, but sweet anyways.

This was a fun little space adventure. Combat was decent in most area’s, altough I didn’t like the fact that if you run out of RPG ammo you basically can’t proceed.
The biggest issue I had with this mod was the end; I was very confused as to what the hell I was supposed to do. After a few minutes I found out I could blow up the monitors and get closer to the core, but that didn’t help me alot. After about 5-10 minutes I finally figured out that you had to blow up the core. Again, if you don’t have the ammo for it, you are stuck.
This is one of the only flaws, but it is a frustrating one.
