Southernmost Combine is an alternate epilogue to Half-Life 2: Episode 2, in which Gordon Freeman is sent back in time to the 1980s to stop a Combine recon deployment happening in the southernmost land of the world. There are a few deviations in gameplay mechanics (more tactical and slow paced, no gravity gun, inventory) but it´s still Gordon fighting the combine and rebels helping him to achieve it. This is a small episode consisting of a varied set of locales with unique art made specifically to bring Source to the look of the South American region in the 1980s.

It’s taken a while for this to gravitate here, it was released some time ago now but it’s well worth a play .

I just loved it. The graphics are so detailed (often too dark though) and “wow”. Gameplay is very good, a storyline that carries through logically, a good number of interesting puzzles. Good length of play too.
I can’t think of a single negative thing about this mod. And to underline, a whole lots of detailed work went into this. Gotta be a personal favorite.
Rush to play this! 🙂

PS – It took a whole lot longer than 1 hour, I didn’t check before posting.
After set all files to lowercase its working under Linux just fine.
Only the Endtitles are corrupt: The headline wich is the title of the mod i think are just symbols.

Real nice mod, the only thing was I found it very dark and hard to see at the beginning. You don’t get a flashlight until later and you really need to be in a dark room when playing to see properly.

Loved this mod! After a real shortage of HL2 type mods recently this was a real treat. The graphic detail is amazing and it’s worth playing over and over just to see some of the things you missed the first time round.
Sure it was a bit dark at the beginning but I turned up the gamma setting in Options to full brightness and it wasn’t such a problem. Just one shed at the station that was pitch black but it turned out I didn’t need to go there anyway.
Whoever these people are who put this together they are to be congratulated. Pretty much as good as anything I have seen previously and better than most. I hope they do more.
Play this, you’ll be amazed!

So First I have to say this is a BIG release and particularly special to Latinamerican gamers like me. Is a BIG release because is the 1st time ever that a Half-Life mod is set in some Latinamerican location and that’s just great.
As this mod was first released in Mod DB here I repost my thinking about it, just to summarize it, is a Personal Favorite to me because is set in Latinamerica, despite I just loathed the pretty much nonsense plot of it.
So here I go:
Well, I have to recognize I was eager to play this project, from the very moment I knew it was being done!
So it was very pleasant to finally play it. I have to confess that being a Latin American player, I was happy to finally play a mod that took place in one of our beloved countries.
The combat was very intense, especially when you reach the Richmond power plant, and overall the gameplay actions go in crescendo as long as you progress in the gameplay.
I also loved the new AR2 model, and that Combine-armored AntLion modified Momma you battle in the game. Also, the G-Man’s cutscenes were a blast, to say the least…
That being said, I guess is the moment to relate the turndowns in this mod.
Well in my POV, I think the weakest point in the whole mod is its argumental script, I mean, the story overall, though makes an effort to be integrated into the Half-Life story arc, is so out of time that just doesn’t make sense at all…
I mean, I know the G-Man is sending Gordon back in time just to alter the actual storyline in the events we saw in ep2 where Eli was brutally murdered by that Advisor. Now, I know HL-Alyx also messes with the time as it’s presented as a prequel of the whole story arc… BUT HL-Alyx does it perfectly because uses Alyx and not Gordon, so it’s a coherent move! Here in this mod -though I understand is not canon at all Messing with the time travel is just stupid.
To me, it would have done much more sense, If the CMB just had taken over Argentina in the mere timeline of the HL2 events, and that’s it, maybe time traveling would’ve been used OK a little bit before Eli got killed in the Half-Life Episode 2 BUT not in the FREAKIN EIGHTIES!, and come on! here is 1987!! So the whole timeline is a mess that just doesn’t make sense!
And I insist it doesn’t make sense, because is just so stupid and unreal, the CMB just has a Military Dictatorship in Argentina right in the middle of the ’80s!, we even see some Malvinas (or Falklands) soldiers pictures, and well we know how that ended… After that Galtieri’s Regime fell, so here, a very evident CMB invasion to Argentina would’ve been immediately repelled with nukes by the USA. So how the CMB established a domain in Argentina with Menem (because we see him in those CMB posters) as administrator!!! when the mere cold war was happening! sorry but that argument is totally dull and so out of sense in the mere HL story arc.
I mean, a CMB invasion in Argentina would’ve provoked the 7 HR War sooner and not later as is implied in the silly script we see at the beginning of the game!
Now, You may say I’m dumb to take a mere fictional mod story so seriously, but to me, the HL story arc is something to take into advantage of when You made a mod, and not the opposite as happens in here, to make out of it a no sense mess!!
I guess this story mess happened because the author was badly influenced by HL-Alyx, so maybe he wanted to emulate some story like that but the final story script for the mod ended up totally f*cked up instead! So this is a perfect example of what NOT to do when You plan the story of a Half-Life mod, PLEASE STAY OUT OF THE TIME TRAVELLING ARGUMENT AT ALL COSTS!!!.
So up to this point, I can only say the mod would’ve been perfect without that hideous story mess, and if would’ve been placed inside the present story arc AFTER the 7 HR war and not BEFORE IT!
Now, this issue may be corrected, as it doesn’t really affect the mod technically, so I suggest the author do it if he respects the HL Story Arc!
Despite this main weakness of the mod, overall is a very enjoyable and also good quality product! I totally recommend You to play it, but if You are a Half-Life Story-Arc purist like me, then be warned! This is going to give you many rant moments when you find out WHEN the story happens.
I also recommend developers to hire or cooperate with a decent story-writer if You don’t have story-telling abilities or skills, as this will make Your mod look so much more coherent and professional.
Well I crashed my train, blew up lots of stuff and in the end stopped the combine.
It was a very fun mod to play.
Few things.
It took a bit to figure out “E” let me in the train.
In the rooftop battle I think my beast committed suicide by running into my trap while I was busy fighting other things.
Looking forward for more unforseen consequences.

Without a doubt, don’t wait one more minute to decide to play this mod. It is one of the best ones I have played in a long time, with the story, graphics, ability for you to work through difficult situations to figure out what’s next. I will be taking a break for a few weeks before playing it again so that I won’t remember what to do or will play it on the next harder level now.

So i just wanted to write a quick comment on this mod. It was a very very, well made mode. One of the best i’ve played recently. The atmosphere and the models and just everything about it was great. It gave me really HL2 Beta vibes and i loved that. If you’ve been in search for a mod recently, then i highly suggest this one! i’m excited for anything you have planned in the future!

The most detail I’ve seen in a HL2 mod as of late! Great gameplay and it’s never really confusing at any point.

I really enjoyed the environmental design, it all felt very lived in. Half-Life 2 in Louisiana is not at all something I would’ve expected, but the execution is near flawless. Both interiors and exteriors were wonderful to explore and fight through. My one gripe is that the screen shake at the end of the mod makes aiming a nightmare.

I am Argentine, therefore I liked all the references to my country. 🇦🇷 (la Quilmes, papá!)
The rest of the mod is simple. From A to B, hit the target and run… If you like shots with the Combine, the ending is beautiful.
The mechanics of the zip line are very good. And the CMB poster with “el Carlo”, 💪 the best of all!
I recommend it 👌
PD: Gracias Lucho!!

by doing an alternative ending to Ep 2, I , your project could be seen as the counterpart of HL1’s “anti climax” by providing us with a different ending expanding on the original stuff.
What I found really interesting is how each chapter provides a different challenge, 1st level is well done with that 80’s setting and some funny dialogue, “twisting” classic HL2 train level to look like it’s the old world but corrupted.
Then, I saw some “unique”, really, never seen before gameplay mechanics in HL2 mods, or maybe some that I can count on the fingers of one hand : travelling on train, using stealth moves to get into a Combine base, getting captured, etc… Each level gives us a unique challenge, after 1st level the second one is Combine centered, the third one is completly against headcrab zombies with infinite respawn mechanics forcing us to think fast to find a way out, as many players I had a hard time to understand what to do with that fuel.
Final levels use beautiful maps, it reminded me of Mission Improbable mapping, really well-done, and the final parts and challenges turn like between a mix of Mission Impossible and 80’s old school action movies.
You have really put high level efforts, but this is clearly impressive, the mapping, all the custom stuff, the different challenges on each maps, yeah you’ve really done amazing work, congrats.

I just played it again after waiting for about a year to forget the story and all the moves I made the first time. WOW!!! I liked it more the second time and looking forward to playing again.
Definitely up there with my personal favorites. Hoping that I can find more HL games made by these designers.
BRAVO!!!

I can see a lot of efforts was put into this.
There were enough custom assets to distinguish this mod from the standard vanilla HL2 atmosphere.
