Why would anyone want to play this after the first ‘sooper” attempt of a game, well I did. It only merginally improves on the first effort but still very short. There are over 400 HL1 game to choose from on the site, once you played them all come back to this one.
The original Sooper was an excercise of redundancy because of its brevity. Mark Kerby’s “sequal” is still a short-lasting affair but it’s a lot more substantial than its predecesor.
Sooper2 takes place after you are employed by the G-man and this is supposed to be just an excercise mission with a theme similar to the hazard course in the original Half-Life; however, these maps are not a tutorial and you’ll be encountering real enemies (I guess the G-man is more demanding than Black Mesa).
The setpieces for Sooper2 are quite decent although the design appears somewhat uninspired. The first few levels are just for show, and there isn’t much to show. Although there were no errors in the visuals, it was noticably lackluster (with the exception of the first outdoor area with the broken conveyor belt). There is an overabundance of health and HEV batteries considering the easy enemies in the first few fights. The only challenges you’ll receive in Sooper2 is in a couple of tough jumps and the last battle.
The last battle is Sooper2’s notable climax and it is a sweet one. There is a duo of rooms with plenty of grunts but there’s still enough room for everybody to make the fight both fun and challenging. Even though I did not drop below 50 health, the last battle was very decent; even memorable. However, there is little atmosphere in Sooper2 and it is still much too brief and contains just that one cool battle.
As it stands, Sooper2 can be considered an adequate Half-Life fix for those that are still hooked on the game; the “training” theme of this level could mean another sequal and it is one I’ll be looking foward to if only Mark will make it longer.

Sooper 2 took me twice as long to get through as its predecessor, yet still clocks in at less than fifteen minutes. That being said, there are some fun little moments in this map. Most notably, the final two rooms see you facing off against a couple of HECU squads, as well as one troublesome assassin who glock snipes you from above. I died once in this map, in that very room.
Everything leading up to that point isn’t all that special. You start the map in a large, mostly empty room, then proceed into a small outdoors section. All of it is fairly sparse in its detailing and it’s not long before you’re back inside, navigating through dull concrete cube rooms. The combat starts out slow and actually… gets slower. I ran past all of the zombies in this map to save time and ammo, and always had more than enough space to do so.
Better than the first map, but still a long ways off being great.

He tried his best. Nice mod. Except that jump with trampoline, requires to crouch on the top. If not you’ll always fall taking damage. At the beginning a had a wish of using noclip here thinking this jump is badly designed or even the trampoline do not impulse enough you high into the air. I recommend save the bow for headshots rather than waisting it in the water. It seems not precise under water in any mod.
