Well, it’s like this. A few rooms and areas joined by some very dodgy level transitions. Each area is quite different from the previous one and the whole thing has a feeling of being stuck together.
Some of the areas are actually well built and I have the feeling that if the author were part of a proper mod team, that gave him very clear instructions he may make some good level, but left to his own devices he lacks direction.
Other areas a just silly; the tracks that kill you for example, or near the beginning with the crumbling floor. It’;s nothing new or exciting.
All in all it’s not a great collection of maps, but play them if you crave you HL2 SP experience.
AI disabled . Started about half way through third map(beta3). Seems that it happened the last time I play’ed this sometime ago. Dont remember what I did to correct it. Any ideas?
Thanks IDM
This mappack is nothing spectacular but I think it’s worth a playthrough.
There were two parts in this mappack where you had to find a key to be able to open a locked door. In the first one, I found the key by accident after a few minutes of looking around. I don’t even know what I did, a game_text entity just suddenly told me I had found the key. In the second one, I could not find the key at all and had to noclip through the door. There were also two missing decals in this area. The keys should probably be a bit more visible.
There’s a place where you encounter double doors and the game tells you “these doors look a bit weaker than the others” or something to that effect. You shouldn’t just outright tell the player that these doors are weak, you should make them look weak. This could possibly be accomplished by adding small-ish holes in them or having wooden boards blocking them and you’d have to break the wooden boards instead.
The visuals and the level of detail are lacking. Plenty of textures are way too stretched out. The area in screenshot 23 has a much higher level of detail than any other part of this mappack. I think that room looks quite good and it definitely wouldn’t hurt if the rest of the mappack also had a similar level of detail.
The part where the player is ambushed by four fast zombies is very frustrating because at this point of the map the player is only armed with a crowbar and a revolver with 6 bullets in it. I did survive it on my first try, but it wasn’t fun at all. Perhaps you should consider a lower amount of fast zombies at a time.
It seemed impossible to me to get past that combine turret in the sewer area. There were lots of oil drums around but the player can’t carry any of them to use as cover. I had to noclip around the turret to get past it.
Also, you should not have used the toxic sludge texture for the water in the sewer. It’s a well established rule in HL2 that it causes damage to the player. This time it did not and it was confusing.
There is also a part where a pipe starts spewing out steam as you approach it and you have to go back and turn a valve to turn off the steam. If you try to turn the valve before the pipe starts to spew steam, it does not work. This was very confusing to me because I tried turning the valve before the steam started spewing out. It took me a while to realise that I should try to turn the valve again.
Other than that, this mappack is fairly entertaining and is probably worth playing.
Nice collection of maps with some tricky combat, especially when armed with just a crowbar. Those fast leaping zombies sure knew what hit them!
And I didn’t loose any health.
This one is also a bit of a thinker starting with a real stinker in the laser room! Took me four goes before the bleeding obvious answer appeared.
The end was rather tricky and a bit too tough for me without a bit of, er help.
Creepy atmosphere at first and then onto the usual, but still interesting, or frustratingly maddening in the case of the train jump!
Give it a go.
I don’t like to say it, but this is a pretty poor mappack, is it not clear if it’s only horror experience oriented, and if is the case, this map pack is not horrorful at all, only some scattered zombies here and there, and that’s it. so u really need a crowbar and a Shotgun, but instead of that particular gun, we have only the crosbow and the pretty useless Magnum, I don’t know why maybe because is the favourite weapon of the author?, that plus smoe relatively easy puzzles and two that involve getting keys that u can barely see, and actually I got to them just by mere hit luck! so that’s not cool at all in a Hl Puzzle. all in all this is so away from a solid HL or CMB concept, and actually there’re a few cmb soldiers that were pointless for the “concept” the author tried to do here.
So u play this if there’s nothing else u can play, and maybe in further works the author certainly can improove his mapping habilities.
I didn’t have any real problems with this map pack. it was ok, nothing special. there is a little thinking to solve the puzzles and I would suggest quick saves before attempting some or else you go back to beginning. I too found some keys purely by accident so its nothing great but not terrible either.
Thanks to all for the review and comments. This was the first map-pack/mod I made, so its understandingly crude and lacking. It was sitting incomplete for a few months but I eventually decided to buck up and finish it, perhaps a bit too quickly. Overall it was a fun experience, and I improved a lot. I hope to make another short mappack in the future, but not a sequel.
The keys:
The keys are on top of machine to the left of the door, they may not have rendered
This isn’t the worst mappack in the world but I wouldn’t call it great either.
The only reason I decided to try this out is because it had the Puzzles tag in it. I was incredibly disappointed, because there are hardly any puzzles here.
The mapping is as basic as it gets. Boxy, unpolished with not so great lighting. There isn’t a lot of combat either. Sure, there are a few zombies, but that’s about it. The “puzzles” in this mappack are incredibly disappointing. It’s just trying to find a key, and that’s it.
Overall, it’s hard to recommend this mappack. Most people won’t find it very fun, and it’s very obvious why. Try this mappack only if you’re incredibly bored.
