The author decided to release this latest update to the mod as an Extended version because he felt that changes were too significant for just a patch.

I enjoyed this update but to be honest I hardly noticed any difference. I hope this is the last update and the author starts work on something new.
Generally it was darker than I like my levels to be but when most of the mod is underground and in sewer style locations it’s unrealistic to expect bright locations.
The gameplay was varied but some of the buildings got a little repetitive for me.
Definitely worth a play if you haven’t played the other versions but hard for me to recommend it if you have.
I enjoyed all the ‘slums” episodes tremendously, I hope we keep seeing such levels.
Well, I just ran through it. I gotta say though that the only way to describe this mod is schizophrenic. At first it goes for a very Horror esque atmosphere, and I feel like it is blatantly ripping off Silent Hill down to set pieces. All of that completely crumbled though when I got to the sniper part, then I realized that it was going to go downhill from there. At first it started out with a nice concept, but eventually it deteriorated into shoving the whole Half-Life experience in.
The set peices range from good to… Awkward. I can’t say that they’re bad but they’re a little hard to follow especially when I had to go back into the sewer I exited not ten minutes ago. It also tries a bit too much with extra rooms which really delay you from completion. Also there’s a sewer level… A LONG and BROWN sewer level.
Now really, these are petty criticisms. This mod is rather fun and challenging and has a nice horror feel until that aforementioned scene. I do in fact recommend it to those who like a very winding level design, though there’s a bit of back tracking. Just keep awake and you shouldn’t get lost.
Play it Now!
If you have not played the original,it’s PIN
If you have, then it’s for if and when you are feeling curious.
There’s not a lot of difference between this and the original for gameplay.
The added bits were OK and the map added a turret or two and around half-a-dozen extra Combine to take out.
I preferred the ending of the original which was more darkly occult than the simple whiteout now.
If you want to go straight to the final map then all of Chapter 5 is all of map 9.
Other than that, it’s difficult to make an original comment on a slightly revamped mod:
Very enjoyable but repetitive in quite a few areas but this does lengthen the game which is good.
Combat gameplay. what there is was OK but not enough of it. Long walks exploring and solving with little or no combat to relieve the tedium.
Diolator & colleague obviously have brilliant talents and I echo Phillip’s words
“I hope this is the last update and the author starts work on something new”. This I would love to see.
I hadn’t played the first version of this, nor Slums 1, so this was all new to me. I found it to be pretty fun and challenging, though a bit slow at times. Had some slowdowns right before major fights. I liked exploring, though I think I may have missed at least two spots, but I’m not sure they contained anything important.
I played on normal level and was a bit surprised at how little damage the shotgun did… It’s my favorite weapon and I did pretty much go through the entire mod with it all but alone.
In some of the areas, I found myself wondering why there were no barnacles. 🙂 Noticed that at least one was removed, not sure why.
All in all, an interesting mod that could use maybe a little bit more dynamic events or puzzles (and perhaps more survivable squad members, as they all died long before I even got to the doorway to escape the sniper… ) but enjoyable. Worth the download and play.
I can’t run this mod. I just an error:
Failed to load the Launcher DLL:
The specified Procedure could not be found.
Can anyone help me? Please?
Didn’t play the original, I thought this was good though, enjoyed it.
Firstly, the ColourCorrection. Wow, this guy knows how to use it. It transforms an otherwise “OK” level into an “OMGWOW” level, or perhaps a “ARGH MY EYES” level once youve played it for a while.
Near the end, I noticed my eyes were hurting, and I was squinting at the screen. Turned CC off, and it went away. The CC gives it a nice atmosphere, but hurts your eyes after a while.
Gameplay wise, the fights were pretty good, I personally felt the pacing was pretty good. The music was a tad OVERused though, and I hate it when the music just ends when you complete a certain section.
Detail wise, combined with the CC and great lighting, the atmosphere is all engrossing and really expresses the feeling of horror.
And is it me or did the smg and shotgun become MORE powerful? They certainly have sound replacements with the custom music.
All in all, I would recommend it, as it has decent gameplay, lasting me about 45 minutes or so. The fantastic CC and atmosphere really give it that extra little push to really make it absorbing.
But theres something that’s stopping me from giving this a PF. I havent played Slums 1. It’s probably the fact there’s a dull ache behind my eyes after finishing this map.
Alright, I never played the other versions of this mod, I just tried this one and I must say that I’m really impressed… This is a high quality mod wherever you look at.
Now, I could make a long (boooring) review telling how much I enjoyed playing this mod, but honestly, no matter how much I write, those words would not make justice to this beauty, this mod is a truly masterpiece,
Level design, lighting, action, puzzles, everything feels so professional, it almost looks like an official expansion pack or something.
I give this mod 10/10. Go play this masterpiece now!
This is definitely a PLAY IT NOW!. It had just enough ammo where you needed it, the plot was good, action intense with great monster placement. I really enjoyed playing this. One of the few mods I played without having to seek help for because I was stuck. Great Job, Diolator !!!
I must add my voice to the others who say they really enjoyed playing this mod. I appreciate the effort that must go into creating it.
This mod doesn’t do much in terms of innovation or new ideas. Instead it provides solid, intense action just like in the best parts of the original games. There is no story, no puzzles, no fancy locations and only the basic weapons…
But what it attempts to, it does incredibly well. The atmosphere is tense, the music great and the scripting quite well done. Played in hard, this mode provides a real challenge, without being overly frustrating. Indeed, as far as level design goes, this mod might be one of the best ones out there… So if you prefer action over story and gimmicks, this mod is for you!
After reading the other reviews, I might be the only dissenter here on this level. While I agree with the other posts about the technical quality of the map, I think there were gameplay problems preventing it from reaching a higher recommendation.
The repetitive room layouts and combat scenarios become laborious and a GRIND to play. If the length of the mod were shortened while keeping the unique setpieces intact it would have been more enjoyable.
In a lot of the mod’s combat encounters, the “blind corner problem” arose. In a typical example, the player would open a door facing a perpendicular hallway. The adjoining wall, open door, or some other obstruction would prevent the player from seeing the enemies approach and the player would have a very short time to respond to this unexpected threat. Enemies would come in groups of 4 or 5 at a time and easily overcome the player’s ammo resources and health. In some instances, a partially hidden doorway in the hallway would allow enemies to attack the player from behind. The player would only notice this threat before it was too late.
Enemy health and weapon accuracy was set pretty high for Normal settings. It felt like the map and enemies were designed on the Hard setting without compensating for Normal players.
No crosshair present or given as an option. While good for players who don’t want it, it shouldn’t be removed in the Options settings.
There were a few no-win situations.
The most memorable was the green gas room. The player confronts a large open room filled with poison gas. Stepping inside, the player’s health begins to drop. Also, inside is a Poison Zombie (throwing numerous Poison Headcrabs). If the player is lucky to defeat those enemies and enters the room, then 2 waves of Fast Headcrabs (3 to 4 in number) attack. To exit this room and proceed through the map, the player must destroy a number of wooden boards barring the only doorway out. Upon opening the door, the player is ambushed by a Poison Headcrab. To help the player throughout this situation is only 1 large health kit inside a crate.
So this scenario with the previous problems, Hard difficulty, no crosshairs, etc., makes it very very frustrating to overcome without dying repeatedly.
Aside from these problems, the team did a great job of prop and texture application, lighting, and creating some interesting environments. However, with the long length, repetitive layout/combat, lack of crosshairs, difficult enemies, and frustrating scenarios, I would have to give this mod a Maybe recommendation.
Great stuff! More please.
No story – but that’s ok. Very entertaining, and isn’t that what it’s all about
A mod well worth playing. Very polished.
The best thing about it in my opinion was the sound, very ambient, added a lot to the overall feeling. However, the music in the setpieces often ran over and continued long after the setpiece was over.
Great gameplay/scripting!! On hard level, the ammo seems only just sufficient.I was stretched to the limit for one heckuva long time scratching around to survive on the slimmest of margins. The Momma Antlion didn’t help at all. An excellent and prolonged challenge and well worth the effort.
Played the original version and really liked it – although I never could get past the Antlion. This extended version was very well done and very playable… and I made it all the way to the end. It will be one that I play again. Thanks to the great effort in creating it for the community!

Slums 2 Extended.
I have to say I loved this, even though is much closer to a horror mod than I usually like. But then, here were enough Combine to keep a nice balance from the relentless monsters!
I was back searching mods on PlanetPhillip when I noticed this one, so I checked out a HD vid on Youtube and was impressed by the excellent graphics.
This is a dark, brooding and very atmospheric mod with some nice volumetric lighting effects. Textures are rich and the modelling is very detailed, the only exception being a missing metal ring around the manhole in the street section. Picky I know! But in a mod this good it stood out.
The street had some great lighting with the fires adding a warming glow to the gloom.
I must say that water was used to great effect in this mod, especially in the dank passage ways, where lighting and reflection made for great atmosphere.
This mod had plenty of action for me, with the opportunity to explore and backtrack some multiple routes.
I was caught out by the poison gas room a few times, such a crafty trick having poison headcrabs in there to confuse!
And I did not expect to meet up with such a large predator down in the depths, quite a shock!
I think the street section was quite a tease, bringing you out into the twilight only to force you back into the depths again!
Some say this mod had nothing new to offer, which is true. What it does offer is a very high quality, atmospheric and very dark underground adventure. Damn right artistic in places!
Good sound effects and a ready supply of health make this a mild chiller of a mod.
Play it now and have fun!
PS. What’s with the surreal beginning?
I gotta give this a PIL. If you like tight zig-zaggy room and hallway layouts, this game’s for you! But I got bored. The polish is there, there’s nothing wrong with the construction or archetecture. Nothing wrong with the battles. It’s just…too tight and too dark for my liking.
One thing I like is how it feels like Condemned Criminal Origins at the beggining, even the music is similar. But that just made me miss the melee” action of Condemend. I lost that game when I reformatted my hard drive. Mabye I should chime up Direct2Drive and buy Condemned again? Anyway, Slums was ok…and the color correction does add a bit of horror to it. Good game, some may really love it.
this was a fun mod to play, nothing to hard or complex, nothing new or exciting but well constructed and a nice play
A video playthrough by Custom Gamer has now been added to the main post.
ive actually played the complete mod 3 times ( only got round to rating it now ) and im impressed…. this is a marmite mod … in other words you love it or you hate it… and in my case ( and many others ) I love it
I have allready played the original .. this mod includes the original ( which takes up only around 25% of the complete slums 2 ) but continues when you exit the old lift…. and in my opinion from then on it gets better
puzzles are not too hard… the only one that stumped me first time round was the brick wall that you need to place two explosive barrels next to…. I spent 2 minutes whacking it with the crowbar.. and then used my allocation of grenades ! … well its a puzzle isnt it !
even on my HD5750 crossfired pc it stuttered at stages .. however this may be a driver issue…. the latest 11.4 release has actually improved around 90% of all source based games ( including all hl2 games and l4d ) its just the odd couple that stutter ( probally lower the detail settings from very high to high next time round … yes I will play this again
finally a quick word on the music/audio …. theres some decent background music in slums 2… I dont recognize it from any hl2 game …. however it works well and gives “SLUMS 2 ” a great atmosphere
my advice is PLAY IT NOW …
Hello, this is my first review on this site, and I’m a bit late to this map, but whatever.
I had a fun time with this mod. It’s a decent length, it looks nice (depends on your taste, I suppose), plays well, and kept me entertained throughout. I had no trouble navigating the levels, although the color palette and map designs can get a bit monotonous (a whole lot of browns, blues and grays). That’s what the author was going for, however, and it’s not a big deal anyways; I enjoyed the aesthetic anyhow.
I’d say the difficulty is somewhat tough, as your only means of resupplying ammunition are through crates, and there’s no suit charge to pick up. I found myself hovering around 40-50 health through about half of the time I played, but I only died once. Just play it slow and cautious and you’ll be fine, and stick to the shotgun in most cases; it’s your best friend in this mod :).
Go ahead and pick this one up if you’re looking for a couple of fun hours.

Welcome to the site. I hope it’s the first of many reviews.
I’ve never played any of these games before and looked at the differences and figured I should go straight for this rather than Slums or Slums 2. This seems to have it all…
Anyhow, what a great game!!! I cannot obviously compare to the other two versions but only this and wow where do I begin? It’s brilliant. Just brilliant. The graphics alone blew me away, the colour correction thingy is awesome. But i’m one of those weirdos that also thinks it was sometimes a little OTT and the darker places where far too dark at times. To me, this sometimes seemed fake and didn’t work, it just needed something extra I thought. Now, I’ve also played this without CC enabled and (sorry) prefered it for a more pure version… but both are superb.
The design of the maps is beautiful and creates a world which is believable and so creepy. Many scenes look wonderful but in an eerie fashion. lol this is truly remarkable throughout!! The only part I struggled with was the Antlion guard boss. She kicked my backside twice before i was successful and then I remember reading that the older version had TWO of them!!! THAT would have been overkill most certainly and I think this version here gets it spot on – it’s hard but doable.
It’s odd that there isn’t a way to charge my suit but this enforces a slow and steady approach. I was always glad to find lots of boxes to crush and often kept spare health kits nearby too. Throughout I found the action well balanced and never OTT, this enhanced my adventure through the nightmare.
Look, this is like an exploration through your worst fears -it reminds me of so many horror movies with its grungy places to explore, with CC switched on. Although I’d ask for a few more atmospheric lights now and then, it is remarkable. Turn off CC if you want things a little more like a stock HL2 mod…
I’ve played this twice and I want to play it again!
Superb is the word and I’ve another PF to add to my list!!!
A little too much zombies but overall a well balanced mod with both combat and puzzle sections.
Recommended!
The recommendation image has been removed because the text review is not long enough.
This is one of those maps that are visually appealing, but doesn’t give out a unique gameplay style at the same time. I felt that the combat was as generic as it is in the original Half-Life 2. It’s just like “Silent Escape,” but instead it keeps this eerie and dark theme as you play through the maps.
It still doesn’t mean that I was bored playing this mod. The combat was enjoyable and the map designs are decent. However, it will prevent me from playing this mod multiple times as it didn’t feel memorable to me.
Anyway, if anyone is looking for a good mod, I definitely say you should try this out.
