I respect anybody who takes the time and makes the effort to create and release map or mod but some things are just not very good and this is one of them.
This is a case of being able to actually make a map without really understanding the concepts behind maps.
It makes the typical mistake of young or beginner-made maps and that it tries to cram too much into too little time and space.
We get rooms of strange proportions with no clear intent as to their use and this is another example of beginner mapping.
I’m sorry to sound harsh but it’s a mish-mash of ideas and concepts.
It wasn’t even much fun to play.

I remember playing this mod some time ago, and I quit on the first map. Now, I know why I did.
The lighting is just awful, the combat is unfair and cheap and the level design makes no sense. I rarely put bad ratings on mods like this one, and I feel bad when I do, but this just isn’t worth your time.
I don’t know if it’s the first map of the author, but I just wish he improved over time.
What the hell? I edited my other review and after the editing, it didn’t count as a review. Phillip?
I didn’t touch your review. However, it looks like you have found a bug: if you edit a comment that has a recommendation attached it might lose that image. I’ll check on the dev site.
BTW, I have removed some of your recommendation images in the past because the text review was just not long enough – I did email you explaining why but received no reply.
OK, I’ll check on it.
Also, those old reviews from summer are just terrible, so there’s no reason to keep most of them.
I didn’t remove the reviews, just the recommendation images. Basically, the reviews were too short for an image. To have a rec. image the review must be a proper review, not just two sentences.
I may somehow be getting soft with this one. My review may be skewed by other mods I just recently played.
I just didn’t have the venomous hatred with this one as I tend to have with things that I usually give the ‘Avoid It’ review toward. The texturing was stretched and just wrong in some places, the lighting was bland and weird at the very beginning, things were just awkwardly not to scale, the enemy and health placement was bizarre (really hard at some times, but still doable) and it feels like it’s the author’s first map during the whole playthrough.
But at the same time, at least I didn’t have to cheat to beat it, and at least it didn’t feel like it was made cheaply or out of spite. There is some care in this, albeit extremely amateur. An effort was made to make this playable, albeit very awkward in a lot of places.
I didn’t hate this mod, I was just really, really disappointed.

First off, everyone has to start somewhere. I can’t remember what my first attempt at a mod looked like but I can only image it was along the same lines as Sky Mesa. Having said that, I would probably have never released it on the Internet.
This is first and foremost a learning project. Any experienced mapper may likely be able to tell which tutorials Poshgaloo was following throughout various stages of the mod.
If anything, this mod is worth keeping hold of for when the author is working on his third or fourth mod that everyone wants to play. While you’re waiting, jump into Sky Mesa for ten minutes to appreciate just how far people can go when they stick to it.

Not sure where to start with this one. It’s clearly a first release that should not have been released. It’s a pack of 4 maps that are very much along the lines of “my first map” – terrible lighting, basic blocky architecture, no thought put into the combat or flow of the maps, etc.
The first couple of encounters are the toughest, as you only have a crowbar and a handful of bullets. After that the combat remains steadily challenging, but you thankfully become very well armed toward the end. Also thankfully, your enemies are crowded together in bunches and are given no room for their AI to have any usefulness. Even the G-man is misused and facing the wrong way. It’s hilariously amateur and should not have left the author’s hard drive.
I’m surprised the author didn’t throw in a gargantua or 2, that’s the kind of map set this was. Not worth your time.

I dont normally play any “half life” mods as i much prefer hl2 mods and their creators .. however i actually enjoyed “sky mesa” and this may be due to that reason “that i never play half life mods/maps” !
as other reviews have stated the quality may not be there .. however i take it the way i see it and i enjoyed playing the game thus the “play it now” recommendation ….
on a negative note there was some missing textures in the small corridor/shaft ( the floor ) … and some area.s did contain more than the required amount of ammo/health ….
in summary im no expert on half life maps or mods and i very rarely run them ….. but credit were credits due ..”poshgaloo” made a enjoyable map which i enjoyed very much .. well done mate !

I may be crazy, but I actually quite liked this 1st release map. I think I just enjoyed the combat and the tentacle part, possibly because I haven’t played HL1 maps for a long time.
And I also think this release is waaay better than Xen Boat, previously released. So that comparison between mods makes me feel I like this release more than that one.
In the technical part this mod is certainly a mess, some faulty triggers boxy rooms and absolutely out of proportions, and so on, but I guess at the end I just liked the combat and i felt quite nostalgic for it and so yeah i give this a PN. But this is entirely a subjective point of view, so I understand you may not like this at all and ok so is up to you to try it or not.

Bland, unbalanced combat as if some are easy while some are not. Level design is blocky and unappealing. The ending is badly executed, losing weapons as the music plays? Can’t you come up with a decent ending instead or maybe a decent map?
