As the name suggests, you go back to Black Mesa. It’s a sparse area with some Grunts and Vortigaunts.
There’s only 1 headcrab to be found in the whole mod, which is a good thing.
Gargs can be found in various places throughout the mod, no need to look too hard, it’s not as if you could miss them, is it?

Nice to go back to Black Mesa, isn’t it. I mean, are there any HL fans that don’t love BM?
Visuals
Whilst I did enjoy the mod it was a little sparse.
Gameplay
I found this very hard and the fact that grunts appeared via portals was really annoying. Killing the Gargs was pretty hard too.
Layout and Design
It’s BM; so lots of right angled corridors and large labs. 🙂
Summary
Hard and fun, just like it should be.
Helps prevent BM withdrawal symptoms.
Yeah back-to-black mesa, looking foward to trying it! Will review afterwards.
Looks like fun, downloading now.
It’s poorly constructed, but still fun I guess. There were some cool scenes.
I didn’t enjoy this mod because… I don’t know why, but I just didn’t enjoyed it! Maybe it was because I am waiting for a good HL1 map for too long
Boring… empty hallways (mapper made walls, but those maps are just unfinished overall), strange voices in strange places.
I think if I have nothing good to say I shouldn’t say anything at all. 🙂
I dont get it… man give me a weapon :S
Perhaps were more accustomed to the higher degree of
“decorations”since we’ve been playing HL2,Episode 1 and 2 and all the mods for years.
Yes, it’s more Black Mesa. But the BMRF here is very boxy with horrible lighting, and the marines teleport into thin air 5 feet in front of you repeatedly. It’s really cheap and without explanation it very much breaks the Half-Life style.
The gameplay is pretty much run and gun, although there is barely enough ammo and health is scarce. The good news is that you never have to engage either Gargantua that shows up, and in fact as soon as you bypass the second, the mod abruptly but thankfully ends with sudden text on the screen.
There’s no reason to be there, nothing of note happens, and there’s no feel of activity which Black Mesa definitely has. It’s empty maps with a lot of dead ends and some tough combat although that is spaced out pretty well. At least this was an improvement over the author’s first release, in which you had to load every map manually. Steer well clear.
Well this review was mine but for some reason I got logged out between writing the review and submitting it.
NOTE: Before playing “Return” I did play “Return 2”, don’t ask me why, maybe it’s cause of that the second part was listed as “Half Life: Return 2” and the first just as “Return” (yeah I’m playing through the ABC 😉
So this is the beginning of “Return” – whatever that could mean. It’s a Black Mesa-style indoor minimod with… well WITH?? Should say WITHOUT, cause many things are missing here.
But what’s included is a confusing situation you’re finding yourself in. So just keep moving, kill and find the final elevator to escape I’d say.
Pro’s:
-Tough difficulty (even on “medium”)
-Black Mesa feeling
-Some scripts
Con’s:
-No story – you’re clueless what happened, and what to do, where to go
-Many closed doors
-Short playtime
-Balancing
-No variation, less enemy types, weapons & health
-Very basic and undetailed graphic design – at least this could’ve been better
-No puzzles
-Dead ends and a deadly trap
-Unfair placed enemies and the trap
-No ambience sound, almost every hall is empty and silent
Nothing interesting, except garg and teleporting enemies. Just a map to shoot a bit.
Empty and silent Black mesa corridors, mean placed enemies, few weapons, little ammo and health. The maps look more like early design stage concepts than a final product, doors and buttons don’t make sounds, the whole place feels like it was never occupied, like it was just build and they didn’t have time to move stuff in.
The level design isn’t the worst, but its not very good and the gameplay isn’t much fun.

Idc if this is the first map from the author but this is a very terrible map. I can’t say anything about the story because there is literally no story at all. You just run around and shoot enemies, that’s it. Don’t get me started when you fail the mission or die at least. Because if any of those happen, there are no autosaves at all sending you back to the beginning. Now speaking of combat, it’s unbalanced and frustrating. Seriously, as I progress the mod, I come to teleporting grunts, they teleport right in front of you. Why would an author do that? The combat is as bad as Hidden Evil! The placement of the enemies can be punishing and annoying as well, mostly shotgunners hiding in the corners waiting for you. Fighting the gargs are pretty easy tbh and I took out two of them, can’t kill the last one because you’re in no good condition fighting it so just go past it. Once you made past the third garg, you go to the elevator, ending the game, lamest ending I’ve seen yet.
