Author’s Note
“Re-Search and Destroy is a single player Half-Life 2 level that takes Gordon Freeman through a Combine research facility to cripple the Combine’s teleportation research efforts. I focused on creating both interesting combat situations as well as narrative elements that would give the player a sense of purpose, a sense of place, and motivation to keep playing. This level was used as a test level to collect data for my thesis: Importance of Story in Single Player First Person Shooters.”

For what it is, it’s pretty good. Very linear, but still with some backtracking and stair climbing. I’m not really a lover of text on the screen but at least it doesn’t ruin the map.
It could have been a bit harder, perhaps I am getting better!
well to be honest with you… I really dislike mods that have GORDEN FREEMAN.. its just.. doesn’t sense.. at least be creative with another name instead of the old Gorden man mods… -_-
Not to bad, I like the close quarters, keeps ya on your toes!! BTW, @2 if they took Gordon and crew out and used someone else, it would be like Ubisoft did with FarCry2 when they took the main caracters (Jack Carver and others) out, just nothing there but running around Africa! I removed it and gave the disk away!! Sorry for getting off subject, PP.
Anyone else having a problem with the AI getting disabled if you die?
Screen says AI disabled if you die or quick load.
Just wondering what the command was to ‘re-enable it” when that happens either on this one or others
in the console you can type ai_disable 0
Nice test, short & sweet but fun to play.
Agree with you PP, we are getting better! LoL…
This map was talked about on this weeks edition of Podcast17: http://www.podcast17.com/transmissions/c11225
Good little shooter that plays well and if you want 10 minutes of fun without being over-taxed then give it a go.

Thanks a lot for playing the map! If you guys have further comments / feedback I’d love to read them. I’m always interested in what the community and players think.
Cheers!
clancy just click on my name and search of a review of you map
I’m torn between PIL and PIN. It’s got Combine. It’s got vent crawling. It’s short.
My squad member seemed to have trouble following me to the top floor, so I had to backtrack a couple of times to get him.
I had a good time with this map ! Visuals were good classic ” back home ” HL2. Combat was nicely face to face ( on hard ).I have to admit that the text prompts did help the story continuity of this short map. Played pretty well with just a glitch or two, but overall a good play. Nice piece Clancy !
play it when ya have 10 mins or so, its worth it. basic level map. I too hate text on screen, but I suppose its better than bad voice, at least you know what to do and where to do it and it had an “end” . brings a tear to my eye every time someone “helping” me gets wasted oh the unjust acts of warfare lol
Well, it’s a very short map but it’s pretty fun. It doesn’t really have any puzzles, just finding stuff. It’s pretty fun fighting alongside only one other rebel so that you don’t have to worry about a bunch dudes getting in your way (not trying to leave out girls, just that a bunch of dudes getting in your way sounds funnier). There’s some shotgunners and some regular soldiers to fight and some backtracking. There’s not much to it, it’s a small but fun slaughterfest and I do think you should play it, but I kind of wish it had a bit more substance. What I do like is how they’ve given it a story. It’s not an amazing one but still it’s better than many maps have.

The lack of medkits sucked because at some points it made the map harder than needed, but it’s not impossible.
Other than that, I found it ok. I liked the way backtracking was handled and the burning building.

This map is unique. Besides having good design, it was actually fun playing. The story is simple and not confusing, killing enemies gives some good vibes. Rooms in the building aren’t bland and actually interesting to explore. The ending is also satisfying.
And yeah, there surely should be few more medkits and weapons. Also that grenade placement right beside turrets is ridiculous.
Overall, exploring is fun, the story is fun, everything is fun.

Looks good. Plays good except the last door doesn’t trigger. Could be that steam has made that part unplayable. Worth a play through.

Not a bad map, visuals look fine but I didn’t pay much attention on the outside. Combat can be annoying because of the number of shotgunners. They’re a huge pain in the a**.
I got no problems play this mod; maybe I just got lucky. It’s short and sweet. My only concern is that the companion is invulnerable, so I just used him to clear out the combine while I sat and watched.
Only took me about 11 minutes to complete. Loved the ending though.
