There are a lot of things to complain about but that’s not always the point. This release has some nice ideas and the combat was pretty tough but the overall feeling is one of lack of quality.

The author freely admits that it’s a very old map and not very good at all.

    Expect the sequel tomorrow.

  2. Maybe?

Couldn’t have said it better myself!

  3. Maybe?

Kind of a silly premise. Who leaves a prisoner with a crowbar in one cell and a fully armed security guard in another? You could see the unfinished areas of the map too when you jump from the first building to the next one. Not very polished at all. The sniper rifle was oriented differently from the regular rifle too. Play only if you have nothing better to do

Well, overall I enjoyed this 2 mappacks, especially regarding the new weapons skins and sounds. the M16 felt more powerful and the sniper rifle in both deliveries were great.

The combat also was good enough, but I think the maps were kind of boxy and sometimes blocky, and also the space and dimensions in which they were developed felt just too short and narrow in both, I mean it didn’t make me feel that same feeling of hugeness there is in Black Mesa.

But all the way its a cool short combat set of maps perfect for quick entertainment

Ye olde “start in a prison cell” setting. It’s of course not original but can be forgiven for such an old map. But things don’t get all that much better here, either.

I found the combat (all grunts) to be pretty easy – you face a lot of them, but you have a sniper rifle (crossbow replacement) with plenty of ammo, and with a bit of exploring you can pick up a bunch of AR grenades. Piece of cake, and on top of that at one point you get to a room with double sets of health & HEV chargers. Play on hard if you normally do medium.

It was the weird things in this pack that really bothered me. There are a couple of cutscenes which are both overlong, but the kicker is that one of them passes right through a solid floor which screws up the graphics. It’s totally bizarre. The level changes were also wonky, it’s easy to mistakenly go back to the level you just left (and then when I got to the right level, the elevator door had already opened to 4 grunts in front of me). The last one has you open a door and basically teleport into a BMRF-style tram. Avoid this one.

Bad mod. Nothing interesting. One rifle – from Chronicles Episode one. AWM rifle has got bad animation, so it looks like very unattractive. Design… empty corridors, bad textures, a lot of mistakes in maps…. Dislike

  7. Ten Four Reviews

A new release, Prisoner Escaped proves to be a gruntfest (in the third year of HL, no less). Well-made gruntfests can be fun, but this one isn’t. Needless to say, combat is downright dull. It couldn’t be more straightfoward. Pull out MP4 and/or sniper rifle and shoot, ad nauseum. Hardly any need for even some sort of tactics.

MP4? Sniper rifle? Yep, the author provides two re-modeled weapons, the MP4 replacing the MP5 (looking a lot like the MP4 from Half-Life: Blue Shift), and a new sniper rifle that looks like it came from the Counter-Strike mod. These weapons are admittedly modeled well but are the only ones available (well, aside from the shotgun that killed Marines offer).

Level design is clearly half-baked. From cutscenes to architecture to r_speeds and clipping, nearly every crime of level design has been committed here. It’s even possible to walk out of a map into the limbo zone. Not a good sign. Plus there’s really hardly any element of actual play here, almost making it feel like an SPQ1 map. (!)

At 3 maps, this is awfully short, and those who are any good at HLSP will finish this in under 10 minutes, maybe even 5 minutes for the more aggressive players. So it doesn’t detract too much time from life, but even then it’s not worth it. One could probably do better even with that RandMap utility.

  8. Think Twice

This whole prison really makes no sense. A heavily guarded prison and only two captives armed with weapons, what kind of prison is that? It felt more like a county jail to me but anyways. The combat is pretty easy, the 2 playable maps are generous of giving you ammo while you slaughter all prison guards as you escape. The level design is also bland, like something a beginner would design.

  9. Play It Later

It’s quite hard to aim with a sniper without dot mark point. I think that sniper is real because real snipers are also very hard to aim, you don’t even know if you can hit a target 50 meters away. This is like a simulation of the reality, you have some nice targets on the roof top and what you need to do is go for it and mark your sniping records. I couldn’t hit them all at the first shot.
