Short version:
Power Tower is a short but very enjoyable experience.
Longer version:
Apart from a few Map Labs entries, I’m not familiar with Skorly’s work and as such was curious to see what this standalone map would give me.
It’s pretty standard HL2 stuff, but that isn’t a bad thing and almost always ensures a map’s gameplay will be at least decent.
The combat is done very well, and gives you a lot of options to tackle your enemies. The Soldiers move around smartly and are fun to fight. They tend to distance them a bit from the player, meaning they take a bit longer to take down which makes the encounters much more interesting.
What also helps, is that the map’s shotgun ammunition supply is a bit tight, meaning you can’t just double-barrel blast every Soldier you encounter.
The fight with the Hunters is also done very well. I really like how they enter the area one by one, and shoot you from a distance. Again, the map gives you ample options to take them down.
The first areas with the Zombies are, again, done well. I like how the map gives you a risk-reward system at the beginning, starting you off with only very little HP and placing crates with health vials around; you don’t have weapons yet, so you are left with a choice: do I try to move past the Zombies while I am one hit away from death, or do I use the Zombies to smash the crates open?
You soon get the Gravity Gun and the crowbar though, so then you can start throwing stuff at them, and the maps gives you a lot of explosive barrels, so it’s good fun once again.
The final battle is a bit lackluster, but I do like the area it happens in. The small extending bridge reminds me a bit of Rogue One, which I liked too.
The visuals overall are pretty good, I like Skorly’s use of saturated lighting. The detailing was also decent overall, and the geometry in the Combine tower is also very well done.
I did find the starting areas to lack a bit in some places, but it’s not too bad anyway so it’s easy to ignore.
Overall, a great standalone map that’ll certainly give you about 15-20 minutes of enjoyment.

This mod is legit! I always wanted these types of stuff! Even tho its 2020… we’re still spreading peace! So mod developers, you did a very job on how we should play and learn our lesson!
My fav part was when I had the batteries in the little things then these creepy thingss (i forgot name) but it was so challenging! Altrough. I only died one time! So thanks!

I was very impressed, the visual areas, routing/design, game play were all great. Thanks to the author and hope to see many more!
In times like these, new maps are even more appreciated, not that I need an excuse.

For a single map, this is well-made from top to bottom (or the other way around depending on the title). Also, can be played with MMod for better experience.

Interesting experience with nice design, well triggered combats, and a trilling part to start.
My favorite moment was when the music trigger with the elevator rise
The end could have beneficiate from something less abrupt like a scene or something else but defenetly worth playing 🙂

GAMEPLAY
That was neat! It was a bit confusing at first, because I searched the area where I spawned for weapons and thought the map was damaged because there was none, until I realised what to do. Most of the gameplay was pretty straightforward, the puzzles self-explanatory and none too challenging. I will note, though, that the layout was occasionally a bit confusing. I’m not sure if this was the author’s intention, but more than once, I found two paths that led to the same area, or found myself unsure which way to go because none of the paths was immediately recogniseable as a dead end with extra loot or as the proper choice.
The fighting was pretty alright. The actual fights were solid, not overwhelming, not underwhelming, just what I’d expect from any HL2 fight. The choice in weapons and enemies was a bit unconventional, with much stronger enemies appearing without any early warning signs I would’ve picked up on (poison zombie early on; hunters out of the blue, I would have appreciated some audio clues or some obviously placed hunter victims as a heads-up), and a few times, I scraped by with below 5 health left, but I managed. The final fight was well done and the area immediately gave off ‘boss incoming’ vibes, so no surprises there.
Overall, I’d leave a solid 7.5/10 for gameplay. Nothing exceptional, good bread-n-butter Half-Life².
VISUAL
This map is beautiful. Period. Granted, there were a few odd things here and there (rocks and cliffs and bit too square-ish), but all in all, the entire map looks really well thought-out, no piecework, everything works well with the other elements. The fog nicely conveys the mood, the landscape looks mostly amazing, the detailing doesn’t allow for any ‘this is just boxy rooms’ feelings to happen. I do have to point out though that the map is really quite….. rectangular. No turns of less than 90° happening anywhere. Still, the forest-y areas make more than up for it.
Most of the building exteriors look like can easily match or top their EP2 siblings and the lighting does a great job at making the map feel alive, contrasts enhancing the sunset feeling, the occasional coloured light to guide the player’s eye, and the overall diffuse and blurry lighting of a world illuminated mainly by natural light. The interiors are equally captivating, with careful attention to detail, such as pipes, pillars, machinery, graffiti, and dead combattants. I don’t want to sound overly fake enthusiastic, but you could teach a course in detailing and lighting with this map.
Solid 10/10 for the looks.
One issue I do have to point out though. Up on the tower itself, the fog mostly disguises the landscape below, but on the way up and from the lower levels, you can clearly see the missing roofs of some buildings. While texturing roofs with nodraw for optimisation purposes is standard procedure, in this case, it’s unhelpful, as the elevator ride allows you to clearly observe the entire place from above.

Power tower is a short campaign map but very enjoyable which i say this was best Skorly’s map i player.
First areas with zombies no weapon and the heath dropper very little make a bit difficult for someone first playing this but this was a done well and much more interesting, soon you found a crowbar and gravity gun and you know going about smash those.
A very well done landscape when you out the tunnels and a very huge tower from distance, the fight with a 3 leg Hunters i mean that :V was very done well too, one encounter at you and the one from a distance in roof shooting completely a little disorientation at you.
After done with these 3 leg, next area is fighting combine time, again i say this was very done for it combat, design, and stuff is very decent, like the idea when you keep waiting for that elevator or cable something to get you up a tower. The final battle was a bit vague, you see a bridge lead to a rocket also ammo crate too, fighting with Gunship was good one but i rather say the areas fight need a extending, but for me I liked this.
Overall a very nice map for a classic HL2 style, visuals overall are very good, short but worth playing it i give a play it now, this certainly 20 minutes or more to playing.

Well it’s been ages since my last review, but nonetheless, this is a WOW map!
Starting with the obvious, this map looks gorgeous! It’s incredibly atmospheric and colorful (especially the sun’s orange-ish color which is my favorite), but there’s a lot of variety as well. I’m not saying anything else, play the map and see!
The design of this map is also really well done. I felt that the amount and placement of enemies was exactly what it should have been in every situation. The combat was fun and there were some scripted sequences which I enjoyed. Also, I liked the inclusion of HL2’s music, since I don’t see it being used in custom content very often. I also liked the part with the gunship, however I felt that the ammo box could have been placed somewhere else, since taking damage is pretty much necessary to get more rockets.
If I had to say anything negative, it would be a minor nitpick of mine, but I felt that this map was too easy. I liked the combat, yes, but there was ammo and hidden supplies everywhere, so the enemies were barely a challenge. Again, that’s just me though.
Don’t let my “complaint” stop you from playing this incredible map though! I highly recommend it to everyone and it’s definitely one of the most fun maps I’ve played recently!
runns great under Linux. Only if you got on the big lift to reach the tower, you are stuck on the lift platform.
Very well done mod! There isn’t anything very unique here, but it does its job really great.
The level design is decent and I had nothing to complain about. I especially enjoyed the beginning, it had an amazing tension. The ending is a bit cliche, but I didn’t find it bad at all, yet I would recommend to avoid it in your future mods/maps.
It was solid in terms of environment design, but I personally didn’t like the look of the “power tower” itself, a bit blocky in my opinion. Anyway, everything else looked amazing.
If you’re looking for a good quality HL2 mod, this one is for you!

Now I really enjoyed this!!! It looks great and the puzzles are tricky yet doable. Action and weapon/health is spot-on too. The map feels big and the adventure element is bang on there. Which I loved. Action and puzzles are great but I love the adventure the most as this is a HL2 strength for me. And this pushes that nicely. The map design is brilliant!! What I didn’t like was the hunters that popped up from nowhere. One would have been enough but I didn’t feel this part matched the rest.
Download this!!
I had a blast playing this map. The texture work at a first glance is spot on and the lighting rolling through the hills illuminating the forest atop a plateau is incredible. I felt that some of the darker outside areas could do with a few more ambient light sources, or I may just need to turn my brightness up. The area at the start where you can trick zombies into smashing open health crates for you is original, well done. The valley with shacks and warehouses and industrial buildings is also lovingly crafted, the architecture and design of the areas feels like it could be a map cut from the final version of the base game. I particularly adored the progression throughout the map, HL2 is one of those few games with so much adventure that I just can’t get enough of and this map captures that perfectly. Dodging your way past zombies in the tunnels at the start, fight through the valley towards the looming combine structure and finally working your way to the top of it, I can’t fault the setting of this map.
There were a few issues I noticed, the ropes around the map could use a bit more slack, they seem incredibly rigid in some places and the stairs could be clipped to make them a little smoother. The combine structure could make use of lighting techniques to nudge the player in the right direction, it took me a while to find where I was meant to go. But these points are just nitpicks which is a testament to the quality of this map when the problems are as minor as these. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t play this map.

Overall a good story and action. Some challenges that were not too hard to beat, but not too easy as to make it move too quickly. I would play it again without hesitation. Give it a try. I think you will enjoy it.

A great map! It never got boring or frustrating. The battery search didn’t take too long either . It had good enemy placements, and it also had good weapon/ammo/health placements too. I definitely recommend this map

I have played this like 2 years ago so the only thing I can say about this from what I have remembered is that the combat is great especially you get to fight a gunship at the top. I love the visuals of the tower once you’re on your way up. Short yet worth a play
I really enjoyed the game of keep-away at the beginning. Introducing enemies without weapons doesn’t always work well in HL mods, but this is brief and tastefully done.
Excellent scripting with the zombie encounters. Does a great job forcing the player into uncomfortable situations, but never feels unfair.
Outdoor area intro was sublime. Music, atmosphere, looking up the side of the tower… *chef kiss*
Holy crap that Hunter battle was insane! Loved how they defended their territory.
Something was janky with the AI, though. Far too many times, enemies would prefer to sit still behind cover and lie in wait until approaching them. Headcrabs were especially bad and didn’t seem to be able to move aside from attacking.
Excellent combat and enemy placement. Encounters felt fresh and creative. I think the above AI quirks actually helped at times since it created an intense, panicked atmosphere.
Overall a refreshing map that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Excellent pacing and a solid Half-Life 2 experience.
