Poke 646

for Half-Life

22nd February 2015

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

It’s 13 months after the incidents at Black Mesa. The Black Mesa Research Facility has been shut down. The nation never got to know anything about the experiments there. The less you know, the less you worry. The government founded a new organisation to handle “alien related topics”. They hired the best scientists, technicians and military forces worldwide, its name is Poke646.

Some days ago the Poke646 scientists spotted alarming signals from the Xen homeworld. It looks as if the aliens plan to invade Nation City by opening a massive amount of portals. But the Poke646 Tech Labs are already prepared: some months ago the technicians developed a huge generator which is able to close hundreds of portals at once with a bundled energy beam. Four generators are about to be installed at the edges of Nation City. With all four activated they will form a giant beam and hopefully destroy the alien portal technology forever.

You play the role of Damien Reeves, the technical assistant of Dr. Fuller, and you don’t know all these details. All you’re currently worrying about is where the hell you lost your car keys when suddenly something hits your head and you slowly fade into unconsciousness. When you wake up hours later, you quickly realize that some very strange things are going on…

This was February 2015’s Classic of the Month mod.

Details

Poke646 places the action in a giant city and lets you play through many thrilling environments, such as industrial districts, sewers, the city library, harbour docks, the subway, rotten bars, dubious hotels and many many more. Although Poke646 is based on the HL engine, you will hardly find any resemblances with the original HL. Poke646 is all new, from the level architecture over the 20 Mb of new textures to the brand new arsenal of weapons.

Additionally you’ll face some new enemies and many unique gameplay elements (like the note system) which have never been realised in a HL mod before. To round it all up, the audio part of Poke646 shines with a suberb soundtrack, weighing in with 24 Mb alone. The tracks play for more than half an hour and deeply enhance the general atmosphere of the story.

I just finished this mod and I had a blast! Great challenges,
a new alien weapon, and surprise ending. Great mod!

  2. I’m glad you liked it, I certainly did. It’s been so long since I played it I can’t remember the new alien weapon! I do remember the nailguns though.

I hope they consider making something for HL2.

    1. PHILLIP,for some reason I cant get this mod working.i have steam, ive downloaded it into my half life file —-any idea whats wrong?

      1. We need more information.

When you say you can’t get it working, does it appear in your Library list?
If yes, what happens you you try to play it? DO you get any error messages?
Do other HL1 mods play okay?

I’ll install it tomorrow and see what happens.

        1. it appears in the library list but dosent appear in steam .it loads from the automatic loader into sierra half.

          1. When you run the executable, you need to change the install folder to your Steam folder. In my case it’s C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\planetphilliphl2\half-life. You would replace planetphilliphl2 with the account name you want it installed to.

Then you need to copy the patch files into the Poke646 folder that was created in the above location.

You could try copying or moving the folder that you installed into the Sierra/Half-Life location. But don’t forget to overwrite the files with the patch ones.

I’ve just tested the above instructions and the mod ran perfect;y on my system.

Please let me know how you get on.

This was the first HL Mod I’ve ever played (actually i’ve played it on a counter-strike retail version), without playing the original HL before. Since then I’ve searched a lot for other mods but none was like poke646. Not even the original HL in my opinion! It’s amazing what this guys made up by using the ol” hl engine 🙂

  4. Nightslayer

This was the 2nd hl mod I played and even though I have played about 50 mods after it, it is my favourite mod ever.
Its so great that it’s better than some games that have been released. The high quality graphics make it seem like a new game except it still has the hl enemies which prevents it from being a total conversion. The level design is superb! You never expect what’s round the corner and enemy placement is quite good. The new music fits the levels perfectly and the credits music by DJ Shadow is well good. The only bad things are that it ends on Xen instead of the city and there are no NPCs. The city is quite realistic and I judt love the high speed train bit which is like Speed movie.
Overall this mod is the best and it did win a gold medal on tenfour and many awards.

  5. ForceFist

This is an awesome mod! I love it. New weapons and textures and much much more! The part where you are on a train is just too much!
Very good realistic city. And the end is pretty fun 😀 It may be a pretty old mod but not that old. But its fantastic!!! You got to download it if you dont have it!

  6. Carolyn

I played this a long time ago, but I remember having a huge amount of fun. This mod was one of the best!

  7. Shawn

Hi all. No matter what I check or uncheck in the “advanced controls” of this mod the “mouse look” only works vertically. I can’t look side to side, but can only strafe. Have had no problems such as this with any other mod or game. Suggestions are welcome, since this sounds like a great mod! Thanks.

  8. Carolyn

    HI Shawn,
I always use the default mouse settings, so I wouldn’t know what to tell you about that. But, this mod was so fun, it would be worth it to try to get accustomed to the default setting. Let us know if you play it.

  9. Shawn

Thanks, Carolyn. Even though it feels very awkward as is I may give it a run after I get through the Invasion mod (if you haven’t played it I highly recommend it, by the way). I’ll let you know!

  10. Ezequielhl

Another really good thin of this mod is that it’s mainly different from the others. The new unusual weapons, their placing (making it a tactic game). Kick ass mapping.

    A must play 5/5

  11. The Abandoned Workshops

    Gameplay:
The gameplay is fun, but the main plot is to activate the four generators throughout Nation City. When I played this mod for the first time, I never got bored, the levels always have a new challenge, although there are some jump puzzles we’ve all seen over and over, but its fine. The weapons are a mixture this time, nothing military this time, you use a Heater Pipe, Nail guns, double barrelled shotgun etc The mod is very possible to complete, enough health and ammo to last. The mod also offers readable notes to read info or to get keypad codes, and you get missions via a poke646 unit.

    Design:
Design has been done with care, to look very realistic for a Half Life mod. Texture choice is perfect and architecture is great. Industrial district actually looks like one, with the brown colour scheme, the sewers look like sewers and the city looks very nicely done. There is no overuse at all of colour lights in this mod, all the lighting is top notch and very realistic, its believable. Even outside locations have decent lighting. Indoor lighting is done with care, and not overused.

    Conclusion:
Great mod, with great gameplay, design and good lighting. This mod offers a good play worth your time, if you’ve not played this mod yet, I really suggest you do..

    Rating: 95%

  12. Kyle Johnston

    Rating: 5/5 + Excellence Award
Good: Great new hi-res textures and models; great map layouts; compelling story; new hazard course; great first time through.
Bad: Somewhat boring after the first or second time; some older computer might not be able to play it due to software-mode not being available.

    Review:
This is simply the best overall mod. The new textures look amazing, and all the new models do too. I cannot say how great this mod is, you really need to go download it and play it. It is hands-down the best Half-Life single-player mod to date. The only bad thing I can say about this is that after the second time or so through, the campaign gets to be old and repetitive. And for those out there still sportin” a 233MHz Pentium I with integrated graphics, this isn’t the mod for you, as there is no software renderer.

The story here is that scientists discovered a rip in the dimensions, and aliens are going to invade Nation City. While working on the generators to stop this from happening, you (Damian Reeves) get knocked out cold, and while the evacuation is commencing, your peers forget about you, so you have to go about turning them on, all while fighting the military and monsters at the same time. Go download this one, its great.

  13. Heyzors

THIS IS THE BEST MOD EVER, EVER. Although the end was very confusing. The only way I could figure it out (not going to give it away) was to noclip past it. Otherwise I kept getting blown up or dead from the lazers. Still, it’s an awesome mod!

  14. john

jump throw, who knew. man I got sidetracked with operation black thunder a great mod by the way. but with the release of vendedia I figured I would get back to it with the orgional.
jump throw, guess I should have done the training mission.

  15. What else can I say about this mod?

I even like the crates 😛

  16. john

i am stuck on xen. I can make the first two jumps, the third is hard but if I miss I can land on the wall and jump up. but the 4th seems impossible. I have made it a few times but miss the floating rock with the head crabs. does anyone have any tips on how to navagate this other then jump jump jump till I can jump no more. tnxs

  17. when in doubt use noclip 😉

  18. john

i have heard about this noclip. what is it? I imagine its a cheat off the developers console?

  19. john

hello andyb. I looked into the half life cheats. I have set up the shortcut to -dev -console. in half life 1 I can load a saved part and noclip. I have the console tab on the load screen, and can bring the developers screen down in the game. in poke I have the console screen but no input or anything when I click on it. when I load the part I am stuck in, the ~ doesnt bring down the screen. sometimes it even crashes when I try to load the custom game. with a error message of half life launcher has had a problem. anyideas?? I am running hl1 vesion 1.1.1 or what ever the last update is same as steam but in serria files. thanks.

  20. no idea on that. When you start a mod/save etc in original HL1 you should open console as soon as it starts and type sv_cheats 1 then save and reload.Thats only way I know of for it.

  21. AI

John, If you are using the Serria version of HL1 go to your desk top and create a shortcut to your HL1.exe, then open the shortcut and goto properties, then shortcut target and edit the target to look like this —> C:\Sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe -dev -console sv_cheats 1 If you have the Steam version of HL1, select the game icon, goto properties, set launch options, and enter -dev -console sv_cheats 1 then save then in the game hit the tild (~) key and away ya go!! Also in the Steam version for each mod you have installed for HL1 (not the source mod, thanks andyb) you have the repeat the same process for each mod icon, Hope that helps ya, have fun flying around!!

  22. john

thanks guys, I will try it somemore. I just cant make that jump from the 3rd shelf to the forth. when I do I miss the floating rock and since the gravity is so low I dont die and have to jump back to the starting point. will let ya know how I do. plus I cant start poke 646 vendetia till I finish this one. thanks again.

  23. Crikey! This is a pro mod. Although, I thought the ending was a bit Star Trek TNG? They mean to help us?! What this ultimately means is two pain in the butt headcrabs near the end on XEN. But, very nicely put together and some really tops new weapons. Also play vendetta.

  24. john

well guys it took months but I finally got no clip to work, to help me past that one jump.
it turns out the console must be activated from the start menu. not from the half life shortcut. thats where the error of the half life launcher would crash the game.
needless to say I only used the noclip to get past the jump, then turned it off and got my butt kicked meny times by well you all know who.
finally got threw it, but now I feel betrayed, must settle this the only way I know how, with a vendetta. hehe. thanks again everyone for their help.

  25. max

I need some help on the train station…

You need to get to the other side, so you get the keys to open the closet and kill some aliens.

The only ways are (IMHO) two of those openings for ventilation. Unfortunately, I can not reach any of them by jumping. The walkthrough says I should jump to the on above the stairs, but I just do not manage. Didn’t have ANY trouble juming in HL, BS, OF etc. What’s the trick? It’s not possible to jump while running down the stairs, too.

Would be great to get some hint here, bros 😉

  26. max

I need some help on the train station…

Ask and you will be given…
I really tried it dozens of times without success. Just after writing the last post I decided to give it one more try and… no problem, can’t believe.

Thanks anyway, also for your page which seems to be the only still active for the old but good games…

    Play It Now!

    …reluctantly. Please read on.

Poke646 is a revolutionary mod… it completely revamps the GoldSource engine, pusing it above and beyond its previous limits, and introduces a whole new storyline, character, and setting. It features an arsenal of completely unique weapons. There’s even a runaway train scene that feels like something out of a blockbuster action movie. But for all of that, I didn’t enjoy this mod all that much… at least not in subsequent playthroughs.

After a long bit of thinking, I’ve come to the conclusion that the game is just too perfect in some respects… and not realistic enough in others. The level design, for example, is unrivaled in the Half-Life modding community. The levels and textures are intricately detailed, to the point where they could get an HL-Source style direct engine port and not look out of place on the Source engine. But combine this with the fact that you navigate a number of these levels by creeping along impossibly narrow ledges or other intricate paths, and they no longer seem to sit right… they feel almost arcade-ish. The same goes for some of the weapons. A nailgun, sure, that’s interesting, but a rapid-firing nailgun? Not very realistic… And a pipe bomb with an LCD display? Aren’t pipe bombs usually hastily-made, impromptu weapons? An alien weapon, the Xen Squasher, whose ammo you replenish by feeding “Yum Yum Brand Candy?” Maybe some of these were stabs at tongue-in-cheek humor, but they just feel so out of place in a mod this great.

I enthusiastically followed the entire mod the first time I played through it. The storyline and level design truly are incredible… and the twist at the end will take you completely by surprise. But then I tried to replay it, and I noticed some of the comic book- or steampunk-ish elements, and my opinion of it soured somewhat. It really is a great mod, and I encourage all to play it, but at times it just seems… “fake.” Or “manicured.” Kind of like the University of Southern California. Verdict: I had great fun with it, but I doubt I’ll be playing it again any time soon.

Bad : Intricate, Promiscuous level design

    Welcome to the hell.

  34. Intricate and promiscuous?????!!!!!!!
My ex girlfriend called me that once.
How that applies to this (or any) mod I have no idea!
I reckon we ought to start a rating system for comments based on the apparent sanity of the commenter.
Just for fun, of course 🙂

    Play It Now!

For those who like Half-Life specialy the first one. The best mod I have ever seen.

  37. Gilfrarry

Tox’s description is quite intelligible, after some thought.

The two words in question, intricacy and promiscuity, have related meanings which not everyone may know. The first means the mod has many complex elements, and/or is difficult to understand. The second word has several shades of meaning, including indiscrimination in one’s choice of relationship(s). Here, though, Tox is probably saying that he feels the mod’s authors were not careful in choosing its content, with the result that it has many kinds of things confusingly mixed together. Perhaps his uncommon exactness is due to an electronic translator.

As Mark Twain said, “The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane.”

I think that’s why my exgirlfriend left. – Indiscrimination in my choice of relationship(s).

Great! This is one of the top 5 hl1 mods imo-Just finished and it was a long one with alot of twists and turns alot of humor. Reminded me of Adam Foster type humor in Minerva. It was alot of fun. I did get stuck and had to resort to the walkthrough a couple times but this was well worth the time. I’d put this up there right next to Someplace Else. It has originality, great storyline and a real ending! I say-play it now.

    Play It Now!

I thoroughly enjoyed this mod. It had the feel of good ol” Half-Life, but a lot of new ideas were incorporated. The story being told by text in the upper left corner, the ability to read notes and get codes, it was all good. But I must say that I agree with geekofalltrades, in that there was a couple of less than coherent parts of the game. The high-tech pipe bomb, the rapidly firing nail gun (even though I think it was a great idea to use it as a weapon!) and the candy-eating Xen Squasher, as geek pointed out himself. Other than that, I think the explanation as to why the soldiers were shooting at me, was a little sketchy. I don’t recall this being covered in the last, explanatory part of the game, which might have changed something.

I have trouble pointing to specific good things about the mod, because I liked it so much as a whole. Aside from the aforementioned things, almost nothing seemed out-of-place, the story was interesting and purposeful and I’m guessing the people who programmed it did a great job, since everything ran smoothly (I know nothing of making computer games). I think the smooth flow of moment-to-moment situations is the most important part. The last thing I want to think about when I’m playing a game is: “Hey! I’m playing a computer game here!” Just like one wouldn’t want to think about watching a play whilst watching a play. I felt immersed in the story and felt ABLE to immerse myself, without having to disregard a bunch things, sticking out from my great experience like sore thumbs.

All in all, an awesome mod, which I will probably play again.

Poke646 is great! It can be a bit vague at times in terms of where I have to get to, particularly when I’m jumping around window ledges, but overall it was great. The weapons just felt so awesome to use and the ending was nice as well.

  51. Ten Four Reviews
Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

Here I sit, having just finished my second play-through of Poke646, and I’m still in awe of the incredible experience. Ladies and gentlemen, this long-anticipated mod unquestionably sits at or at least near the very top of the list of the best Half-Life single player releases.

You assume the role of Damien Reeves, a perfectly average technician for the Poke646 group, created to handle “alien related topics” after the Black Mesa incident. Once again, your perfectly average alter ego is called upon to save the day and preserve civilization as we know it. The actual story of Poke646 is related to you through the use of visual communication tools, such as computer terminals, notebooks, and the like. Your main task is to prevent an impending alien invasion by activating a number of generators which power some kind of anti-invasion beam. It may sound a bit basic, but there are a number of twists thrown in throughout the levels that really make up an interesting plot.

One of the main attractions of this mod is the sheer amount of new “stuff.” By “stuff,” I mean all-new textures, sounds, weapons, and even new background music. Poke646 feels fresh, not just another ‘desert base’ level pack with the old Black Mesa textures and Half-Life’s standard weapons. Marc Schroeder, the main designer and project leader, created hundreds of great new textures and added dozens of new sounds to make Poke646 visually and aurally fresh. The new weapons, all of which are similar in operation to Half-Life’s original weapons, are well-modeled and have believable sounds, and the new music is mostly subtle but moody and effective. Even the HUD has changed, and there is a new Hazard Course which is a must-play. In fact, virtually the only carryovers from the original HL are the enemies. There are a couple exceptions here, though: the soldiers have been re-modeled, and there are a couple of new foes to deal with along the way, including a tricky end boss.

The level design, in a word, is superb. There are several different locales that you end up playing through, all of which have a distinct style, yet blend together nicely as you progress through your mission. There are plenty of puzzles to tackle, several memorable sequences, and often there are multiple ways to approach hostile encounters. There is a decent number of firefights in Poke646, but the emphasis is really on the puzzles and the mission, and I personally would have preferred some more combat. That is why I feel there is more fun and challenge to be had by playing on the Difficult setting if you are an experienced Half-Life player.

What’s wrong with Poke646? Well, not a whole hell of a lot. There is a single area with a lot of action that could cause a brief slowdown in framerate, but otherwise the maps are intelligently designed to avoid r_speed problems. I did encounter one area where I could make a jump that I obviously wasn’t meant to, since it just led to dead end corridors. No big deal, but I am surprised this wasn’t caught in beta testing. My main complaint is with the inclusion of the obligatory Xen jumping puzzle area. I didn’t mind Half-Life’s Xen jumping puzzles, because it fit into the story well. In Poke646, the final encounter takes place on Xen (which is fine as it fits the storyline), but before that encounter, you are subjected to a pointless room of jumping. Why even bother?

Overall, I’d say without hesitation that Poke646 is among the best of the best Half-Life packs. From beginning to end, Poke646 screams professionalism. Marc Schroeder used this project as his diploma in graphic design, which apparently gave him the extra incentive to make everything about Poke646 perfect. And I must admit, Poke646 is as close to a perfect release as I’ve ever seen. It even bests some of the retail mods that use the Half-Life engine. Get this one.

  54. Ade

    Awesome total conversion classic!

  55. Personal Favourite

So I wish that I’d seen this mod a long time ago! What a brilliant piece of work it is!

From the solid use of physics even in the original engine (normally I’m really leery because that’s the weakest part of the goldsrc engine imo) to clever and innovative equipment, to the brilliant visuals and excellent sound scape, this is probably among the best mods in general and certainly the most fun hl1 I’ve played.

It’s got a good solid story that needs very little explanation, and I always love to have a scientist-turned-hero. Not to knock any of the other hl1 mods where you play Gordon, but it’s fun to have something slightly different and actually make it seem like they have half a clue what they’re doing. Sure, you wind up killing stuff and blowing things up, but it was very enjoyable.

Some bits were downright challenging (train ride, I’m looking at you) and because of my hands and loathing of crouchjumps, I did have to noclip at one point.

But it has everything you’d expect out of a full game – sneaking, ledge edging, train rides, grenades, and button pushing! And, explosive toads! 😀

I didn’t find that it was hard to stay alive, though there were a few moments of wandering through half a map with 5 hp left. O.o I wasn’t familiar with the ‘two click” magnification on the crossbow, that was at once slightly annoying, and very helpful once I figured it out.

The mapping was beautiful, in pretty much every regard. Though some if not most of the maps were quite dark and I never had a flashlight – was that on purpose? Or did I just miss something and never find one?

Overall I think as mods go, this is a gold standard, high-bar. Excellent work, and worth playing.

  56. dethtoll

Hi folks, I’ve done you a favor and dug up some old HD-quality models out of the graves of the 00s (read: my external HD) and now I give them to you:

    http://www.mediafire.com/download/xb0i40g91yain2b/poke646hd.zip

I think this is mostly veteran modeler Romka’s work.

  57. This is very cool mod! New weapons are beautiful. There are even new hazard course! I like it!

  58. Nice mod, especially if you like a change of scenery. This mod is mostly outside black mesa. That is why I didn’t like it so much, and chose play later. I love to roam black mesa. But besides that it’s very original, very high quality and a very mature, well balanced game.

  59. Phillip says Play It!

What’s not to say about this? If we only had fifty mods like this that might be better than the 500 we have for Half-Life.

With mods this long, it’s hard to pick favourite areas etc, partly because the whole thing is so well designed and partly because doing that would make it seems the other areas were sub-standard.

Sewers get a fresh lick of paint but still feel like sewers though. The streets are possibly the best streets in any HL mod and the colour palette is just right.

New weapons with old enemies is enough of a difference to feel fresh and there’s a story too.

This is truly a classic because of the attention to detail. Yes, other mods have that but this also has fun. If you finish this and haven’t had fun then I will be very surprised.

So, why then didn’t I give it a PF? Well, as much as I liked the setting I am a Black Mesa Lover and regular settings (like the casino in the Citizen Returns) don’t really float my boat.

Play it, Play it now and you will thank me, although you should thank the author more!

  60. AI

I played this , seems a long time ago, when it first came out — when — I can’t remember! That happens when ya get old! But in my old files I found the sequel “Poke646_Vendetta” are you going to include tis also?? It was dated 12-21-2006.

    1. Unq

Hi AI, yes Vendetta is the sequel to Poke646. I mentioned it at the end of the stream yesterday, but it’s a significant enough (and standalone) release that it’ll be separate from Poke646. I definitely recommend playing Vendetta as well as Poke, and keep an eye out for it in a future Classic of the Month. 🙂

  61. Unq
    Personal Favourite

Yep, this one still stands up as a classic. The new look and feel go a long way toward making it feel fresh. The combat is not too challenging, although as you can see from my stream there are certainly some tricky situations.

For my part, I loved the new locations – especially the nighttime city areas. The train sequence is also very well designed and executed, while at the same time not overstaying its welcome.

The weapons are new but similar enough to the standard loadout that they are instantly familiar. The slowdown mechanic on the pipe (crowbar replacement) actually quite limits its usefulness against stronger targets like zombies.

I didn’t much like the Xen area at the end. Even though it’s short, it’s just a series of jumping puzzles – though I do appreciate the new approach taken for the boss at the end. And I really liked the color palette chosen for the Xen section.

That’s my Ten Four review above, and for the most part I feel pretty much the same. There are few nitpicks I could level at Poke646, but by and large it’s a fantastic mod.

  62. 2muchvideogames

http://youtu.be/9J7PAwjNi54 (Chapter 1 only, other chapters coming soon)

As you can see, I will be playing all these classic mods in the WON platform. The mod is certainly very good, but regrettably (and this prolly didn’t happen to other players), but I ended up getting stuck at the end of the train section, where it loads the next map and I get stuck on the floor. I remember getting around that problem somehow in the past, but I dont remember how so I will have to stop for now and then proceed on another day using noclip.

It’s certainly not an easy mod, you can see the difficulty spike at the end of chapter 1 where you are going against alien grunts using only nailguns. This is one of the few really good mods that take place in a large city (some other decent mods with a similar city setting I remember are Afraid of monsters, cry of fear, black operations)

The weapons, although basically similar to default half life weapons, look so different that it gives a feeling of novelty anyway. Even the alien that eats pringles is basically just a gauss gun with splash. But they all look really good and the animations are even better.

The Xen jumping cave at the end, though kinda bit annoying and tedious, was most likely meant to be a buildup to the final boss. That boss was tough if you had no idea what to do, so a boring section right before can amplify the effect that boss gives the players. It would prolly be better if that jumping section was easier to get thru, so that at least it wasnt frustrating.

The storyline is great, not something you see in most mods. And it prepares you for the sequel, too. The sequel is also great and it is standalone (you dont need to download this mod to play the sequel), so really any half life fan should play these classic mods. Great opening choice for this event!

    1. 2muchvideogames

getting stuck at the end of the train section, where it loads the next map and I get stuck on the floor.

I think I remember why now. I kept standing on the traincar and shooting off the latch from where I was standing, but you are supposed to stand on the latch itself and break the latch using melee. Hopefully nobody else made the same mistake I did (though I wonder why no beta tester caught this problem)

  64. Personal Favourite

Its been so long since I played this, I’d forgotten some of the “tricks”. had to refer to a walkthrough several times, for example the “design flaw” as i refer to it in the wall by the red pipe where the broken stairs are in the sewer. That being stairs on the wall which are virtually invisible. The only other complaint, which I don’t recall in the original WON version, is this version is too dark. Even after increasing brightness.

The gameplay and puzzles are so well done, this is a Personal Favorite for sure.

Great idea to have a classic of the month.

  65. Play It Now!

This really is a classic HL mod! Great choice. It’s still enjoyable to play now after all these years. As I remember the sequel was very good too.

  66. Awesome total conversion. The first total conversion I ever played. Many new interesting weapons, even if most of them are just reskins. The texture work is fantastic. The level design is superb. If you liked this, make sure to play the sequel, Vendetta.

  67. bkadar

hey there, i got the game to start but when i go to edit settings the keyboard tab , it’s blank. tried a config file from another hl mod and the one from hl. and nothing?

    1. Unq

You might try just deleting the config.cfg in the Poke646 folder and then restart the mod. That should grab the config from the valve folder. I don’t know if it’ll let you change the key bindings then, but at least you’ll have them set the same as in Half-Life.

      1. bkadar

got it towork on another hardrive install ,so all early mods will not workon steam? got a lot saved 40or so gigs of compressed mods . should i just delete them? pp seems to have most of them,

        1. Unq

No, I would definitely not delete them just in case. The vast majority of HL mods even from the old days will still work under Steam. There are a handful (usually the ones with custom code – dll files) that won’t run with Steam and give you a version error. However you can make a separate installation of the WON version of HL and run old mods under that if you want to.

  68. Personal Favourite

This is amazing… I have not yet seen a mod as good as this.

    Gameplay:
    9.5/10
It reminds me a lot of games like Wolfenstein3d and Quake in that you need to collect keys/read paper to unlock certain doors. The new features added such as pipe fatigue and the guns are great. They keep close enough to the original to be recognizable, but are changed enough to be fresh and new. I never really felt frustrated with unclear direction, like some other games have done. The only problem(?) is that some parts are not very clear and can make you unsure if you completed them correctly.

    Design
    10/10
Every thing looks great for GoldSrc. The models look great. The environment looks great. Even the weapons look great!

    Final verdict
    10/10

High quality throughout, great feeling of uneasiness, excellent puzzles, great new features/weapons, and a story that keeps you guessing all the way to (and past) the end. I can not stress enough how much you need to play this mod.

(I forgot to add the recommendation system thing, but it would have been Personal Favourite)

  69. Hello folks, I’ve just around 130 mods in my steam library, actually I’m not to stupid to install something. But I cant get Poke appear there. Put it into my SteamApps\username, \common and \SourceMods folder, looked at developers page FAQ but found no solution. Maybe I overlook something obvious (what is mostly the problem in computer issues)?

    1. It’s not a Source mod. It needs to go in the Half-Life folder. Please see the manually installation guide within the post itself if you need more help.

      1. Thanks a lot Philip, put into SteamApps\common\Half-Life and it works, I’ve read the installation guide inattentively, sorry.

  70. After I beat the map with the train, where you have to go to the last wagon, the game crashes when it loads the next map. I’m using WON version 1.1.1.0.

  71. Personal Favourite

Is there anything about this classic mod that hasn’t already been said?

The gameplay is ace, the mapping is incredible, the story is really good and the visuals are simply awesome. From the amount of detail in the textures, to the new weapons and models, this mod is perfect in every way.

Is there anything wrong with this mod? Well, nothing major. I guess the soldiers are a bit OP, but that’s about it. Also, in the WON version, I had an issue with the train map, but after I read the devs’ FAQ, everything was fine.

Overall, just play this mod. You’ll enjoy every second of it. If you haven’t played this mod, then simply do it. It’s that good.

  72. Think Twice

    Can’t recommend it.
When Half-Life came out, it fixed many problems that pre-Half-Life FPS games had.
Poke646, sorry to say, un-fixes alot of the problems.
Also the platforming (really? small edges alongside walls?) and puzzles are just…ugh…. Combat feels slow and most weapons are lacking any punch with the exception of the shotgun.
There probably is a special place in hell for people who place pointless doors everywhere.
Maybe the experience is different from someone else, but this just wore me down.

    1. Well it’s certainly unusual for people to not like Poke but each to their own. My next comment normal sounds snarky, but is not meant to be: Are there any HL1 mods you like?

  73. Um hi I’m new to this site and I kinda love how you guys made this mod, I really wish to try it out since I really love superb HL mods that look too HD than the regular HL game. I saw every feed back from the comments, and I must say I really must agree with the rest, however I do have a little problem with the game’s exe files…

Every time I click at them they do not want to do anything. Like for example once I click it 2 times, and a popup asks me if I wish to proceed to install it. The pop up does not do anything, nor I see a installing window for this game. I really hope anyone can help me what’s happening when I try to click it.

But on top of everything on this game, it looks great and I really love the designs and textures, it makes it too real and ultra HD graphics for Half-life. The story may look interesting if I ever solve the installation problem. The weapons look like an ok sign, but it seems not always have to be military like Dead Space is.

Anyways I hope I’ll do a real proper review after I play the game!

    Cheers!

    1. Let’s see if we can help. Firstly, nobody on this site made the mod. If you look under the BASIC Details section you will find a list of authors. That list is a link to the mod’s homepage.

Once you have downloaded the compressed archive, are you moving the contents to a temporary location? You can not run the exe from the compressed archive. It must be moved first.

Please answer these questions and then we can see what else we can do to help you.

  74. So, to be honest I expected more from Poke. However what it did offer was polished to a degree that rivals the original Half-Life. The level design was tight. The songs, while few and far between, were chosen and placed well. I loved the new weapons, and tweaks to the old ones. The fact that most of the gun’s shots were delayed like the Half-Life crossbow kept the game fresh. And the ending, along with the rest of the story, was solid and intriguing. So suffice to say that I’m hooked.

    Off to Vendetta ᕕ( ⁰ ▽ ⁰ )ᕗ

  77. Well, i finish that mod too, and its brilliant! The level design, the weapons and the story are great.

  78. good

  79. Personal Favourite

One of the greatest HL1 mod’s ever made, Poke646 (part 1) is also one of the few to try to put us in the Black Mesa direct aftermath, with the cities/world being affected by all those aliens and xeno disasters.

Custom textures, new weapons, well-written story… it never felt bland nor rushed and there is also a very well designed final boss fight which requires more brains than brawls.

Overall it’s one of the most respectables examples of what GoldSrc modding can give us, and its sequel is in the same mood.

  80. Play It Later

Genuinely good maps where unique elements shine through are interspersed with a few forgettable sequences and minor gripes that keep it from its full potential.

Why it’s four instead of five:
-Some unnecessary cutscenes (I wish I could have played through them instead!)
-First few sections of the game felt a bit plodding to me, and you have to venture through an uninteresting maze of containers before getting to the interesting areas. Once you’re in the sewers, it’s much better and the maps begin to start having more depth in the form of sounds, story, and relevance.
-I wasn’t one hundred percent able to *get into* the story and become super interested in the poke foundation. I wanted to know more, but in a bad way– there wasn’t enough to hook me on it in the first place. I felt as if I was missing some sort of worldbuilding or the mod was, something that fills in the gaps or makes this foundation seem like it *exists*.

    I liked:
+Some genuinely enjoyable vistas and moments (Exiting the subway station, tentacle alley, etc)
+Good weapon pacing and new weapons (as well as old ones with new quirks)
    +Great music!
+Maps looping back in on themselves and changing as they did was very interesting (Subway station is the best example, where you turn on the power and it closes off a route that was previously open to you.)

  81. This is my favorite mod for now. When i played this i felt i was playing another game. Only things that are from Half-Life are good old Half-Life Xen aliens , some Xen textures and GoldSrc. End is odd , but that he said is true , i think same. They added new enemies , story , textures , music , it’s like another GoldSrc game! This mod deserves more support. For those that are stuck somewhere in game , here is official written walktrough : http://www.poke646.com/walkthrough/index.html . It helped me a lot! For those who love play Half Life mods , this is on MUST PLAY!! list. I rate this mod 7/5 xD

Poke646 follows a fan-made aftermath of the Black Mesa incident. In this universe, a new organization has been established to handle the Xenian threats: Poke646. The story follows an assistant named Damien who is clumsily knocked out before the invasion starts. You wake up and it is up to you to stop the invasion that has happened in the city. One interesting note is that Nation City tends to really explode like something is going to violently explode whenever you enter a new area.

Anyhow, Damien is not like Gordon. He doesn’t wear the HEV suit, therefore he is slower and doesn’t have armor at all. His weaponry is also unlike Gordon, Damien does not have the luxury of proper firearms and gadgets but his tools still do the job just fine. The Crowbar is replaced by a lead pipe, and for some reason, Damien becomes tired after a few swings and will swing progressively slower. I feel like this is redundant since after early chapters you won’t use it to fight enemies anyway. Instead of Glock and MP5, Damien has two nailguns, both are the counterparts of the firearms but the automatic one lacks a counterpart to the grenade launcher. His only explosive is bombs that act like Satchel Charges. He also comes across a Crossbow that has two-level zooms and a double-barreled shotgun. (Jackhammer in Remod) There is also this weird alien rat thing that acts as a hybrid of Spore Launcher and Tau Cannon. This makes playing as Damien quite unique and makes the experience very different from Half-Life.

The level design is good, most of the time the puzzles are not too hard but also not easy. I think the parts where you have traverse ledges are too difficult as it can be very tricky to spot either windows or other ledges from the textures. The train level is a bit buggy as I somehow manage to randomly gib and saving at the top of the train is instant death.

The ending of this mod can be quite anticlimactic since the twist comes out of nowhere and it really does not make sense to me. Also, the final boss can be easy or hard depends if you’re quick to figure the way to defeat it and there is nothing to tell you what to do.

  83. Play It Now!

Very nice mod! I like the custom storyline and weapons. The puzzles are also interesting to solve. I think that the rails on the buildings’ walls (I don’t know the exact English word…) are too narrow, but except for that thing, I like the mod very much.

  84. Play It Later

It’s pretty good although really short, the environment do look nice and the puzzles are fine.

  85. Play It Now!

a really good mod, my favorite part of the mod is , undoubtedly , the maps and the level design.

  86. Play It Now!

The navigation is clear, the gameplay is challenging and the story, albeit having some plot holes, it is very engaging, and makes you think. The end part there was kind of a letdown though, but if the journey is good, then it’s good in my book

A visually stunning mod, i loved it so much.
Only problem it’s way too easy for the most part.

  88. I’m thinking more on the story of this one, and why it works regardless of plot gaps introduced at the last minute. Like: wait the scientists were teleporting the aliens over? How? Why? What caused the second resonance cascade? Do the scientists know what is going on? The reason it works regardless of the plot gaps is that at the end of the day Damien Reeves strands himself in Xen over trying to do the right thing based on a note from a dead man who did research he knows nothing about as an assistant. It’s a perfectly Half-Life ending: he sees that the 4th generator is destroyed, reads someone’s note saying everything is a lie and he needs to use the bathroom teleporter to save the aliens, and he ends up just having to go “well… if you so say so… I mean everything wants me dead and I can’t go anywhere else!” He just jumps into Xen without a way to get back at all. The short Xen section confirms that post-Nihilanth none of the Xen aliens will attack on their home turf, so he’s been killing innocents and animals. Once Xen is saved Damien Reeves is just left going “well… I guess I live here now…” which even if there isn’t much explanation still lands all the same.

For trying to fill the plot gaps myself since that the fun of Half-Life’s storytelling approach: it makes a lot of sense if Xen is the borderworld you have to teleport through (at least further than like 20 feet that one time in Opposing Force) that the scientists would still work on teleportation, make the same mistakes, and just go “okay if it happens again, we wipe out life in Xen so that we can use it freely and we use the accident itself as motivation, just saying we destroyed their teleporters to explain why they’re gone.” Oh now I love this idea and what Poke646 adds to the canon for the world! I am def keeping it in my headcanon as how the public learned about Xen and the Aliens/earthlings eventually met the Vortigaunts as people.

    1. Gosh there’s a lot of fun ways to read into how to fit Poke646 and its writing into canon. Like the note at the end blames the portal storm on Poke646’s scientists doing something stupid, but what if it was instead, just a 13 month delayed aftershock from the Resonance Cascade, maybe even one that kept going for as long as the original went or longer. That could explain why the “Portal Storms continue” paper from HL2 and Alyx doesn’t mention Black Mesa at all, when it seems moderately hard to believe that could be covered up if portals were opening across the planet.
Or you can read into how Dr. Fuller always refers to Xen as a planet and the whole plan seems to be to shoot a laser through space to blow it up. That could easily mean that because they nuked Black Mesa and killed every researcher they could, they lost ALL the research, so all they can do is make a new organization with new people studying the same stuff without knowing what went wrong in Black Mesa and redo all their studies from scratch. This also could mean that Xen itself was never in any danger, they were aiming the bundled beam at an empty point in space in our dimension thinking that’s where the planet Xen had to be. That also implies that Damien may have got himself stuck in Xen for nothing, that despite what that dead scientist’s note said and his well meaningness, Xen was never at any actual risk. That is so dang Half-Life.

I really like the idea that the Poke646 resonance cascade or portal storm was the one that the Combine arrived soon after because it gives space for more political machinations, highlights how much information was lost when they nuked Black Mesa, and it emphasizes a kind of futility to it all. The government successfully covered up Black Mesa, they killed the witnesses, so that no one left talked and started over with a new organization, and as a result they got a team that didn’t know Xen was a dimension rather than a planet because all the BMRF data was nuked and whose best idea was to build a receptor there to try and secretly nuke Xen in fake self defense. The government covered it up and then the storm happened in a city in front of everyone, innocent people and aliens died, they couldn’t even enact their plans, and then an actual Alien Invasion finishes the job.
      I love it.

Hands down one of the best HL mods ever! Definitely one of the first things you should try after finishing Half-Life with it’s expansions, I would even say the first thing, as it’s great in introducing newcomers into HL modding community. Yeah, this mod is what playes should base their expectations on regarding HL mods.

Level design was GREAT! Levels were really fun to go through, map quality was pretty consistent, although I must say outdoor areas of Library chapter felt kinda bland, but interior still felt great. This mod puts a lot of accent on indoor areas, which look great and fit pretty nicely into GoldSrc aesthetic.

Story was good, although I didn’t like the end that much, I mean, who cares for alien Xen creatures, nobody would act the same as protagonist of this story did.

New weapons were pretty fun to use, I must say. Whole weapon system was reformed in this mod, but it was executed excellently and whole thing felt pretty refreshing.

Overall, this IS A MUST TRY! As I said, probably the best thing to introduce you into modding community!
