Parallax

for Half-Life

5th July 2011

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

This is the beta release of an unfinished mod. Since this will never be finished, Adam gave permission for it to be released.

There are only two maps and the second one is just two small areas.

My original post had many more screenshots, including outdoor areas with trains, but these are absent from the released files.

I can’t verify that these are actually from Parallax. They do not have a large version.

Can someone help me? I’m stuck. I’ve gained access to the long ladder that goes up to the large freight elevator. I go up the ladder around the elevator to a set of two doors that lead to a room with two large doors at each end with a couple of large storage crates. I can proceed no further as neither door will open and I can’t go back through the small doors as they now will not open.

    @jallo

Maybe you noticed that the Parallax mappack only consists of two maps… and you reached the end.

  3. jallo

Thanks Red Slug. Your probably right. I was just observing the screenshots and had not been to the trainyards pictured so assumed I was missing something somewhere. Fun while it lasted.

    because it’s unfinished

    so cool

  6. Mel
    Maybe?

OK as far as it went part 1 of an unfinished game

The length of a map or mod can seriously affect how we feel about it. For me this is just long enough to get me excited but too short to be WOWed.

I can understand players not rating it too highly because it is annoying to sit down to play something only to find it’s finished before you have even finished getting comfortable.

It’s obvious that this would have been a really detailed and well-planned mod and it’s a shame that it didn’t make it but ended up in the Big Mesa in the Sky.

I thought the helicopter was the end, but it’s not, so keep wandering around or check the screenshots, they are nearly always in order.

So, if you want 10 minutes of quality action, this is for you.

  8. Play It Now!

This is some seriously impressive mapping with great level design, architectural work, texturing, great placement of ambient sound effects, solid scripted scenes and some really fine and fun combat sections both with marines and aliens.

The bad? Well, except for being in such a unfinished state, i.e. the second map was barely started on, there isn’t any at least that I could find. This is definitely worth downloading just for the first map. It’ll take roughly 10 minutes to run through but it’ll definitely be one of the finest 10 minutes you’ll have.

Honestly, if you’d try and look for any other faults you would have a really hard time finding any since everything is so well crafted together; lots of time and care must’ve been put into this. Really, really good map pack — just a shame it wasn’t finished as it could’ve been way up high with some of the best maps and mods released for Half-Life.

A really well made pair of maps featuring a custom textured facility of Black Mesa. The first map features aliens, soldiers, and more importantly, some fun soldier on alien action. I’m sure a number of us players enjoy taking a break once in a while and let the AI’s battle each other out. Other than that, the architecture is generally pretty good looking and the first map is pretty well thought out. However as we may find from the readme this is a beta that was never completed, so that’s why the final two screenshots comprise the entirety of the second map. Since it’s from the same guy that mapped minerva metastasis and someplace else you’d be hard pressed to skip over this just because it’s an unfinished beta. No worries, the first map is definitely finished, though. To all intents and purposes, this is essentially one extensive map.

  10. AI

A good quality map, made by Adam Foster, who craeted “Minerva” 🙂

  11. Maybe?

I think this one had strong Black Mesa atmosphere, almost like map(s) from Half-Life 1. Nice mapping (his own mapping, but still close to Black Mesa style) and I always like xen mobs vs grunts battles for some reason.

But can’t give higher rating because it was so short. Too bad, I had good time with this. It’s just so difficult to give rating for shories like this.

I was hoping to see some scientists and Barneys, but no idea what ever happened there because there’s no story for us.

  12. Play It Now!

This mod was great, and like Radix only had one flaw.

This mod has both action and puzzles. The puzzles aren’t anything special, push a button, open a door, etc… but the gameplay was really enjoyable. The mod wasn’t that hard but some fights were challenging and required me to load in to get past without losing to much health and hev.

Like Radix, I think this only had one flaw, and that is that it was way too short after a brilliant beginning. I guess the unexplained ending and the lack of direction could also be included here, but they were very minor anyway.

You have to play this one, maybe it’s because we just came of the back of two very poor mods but this is one of the best in the 100SDoN for me, probably just coming in after Radix and Caged.

    very nice mapping… and short…
im not addicted much, because those maps are like a beginning to gameplay
and there is no finish text or something for final…
    there is no story…
its just a beta 2 maps not actually mod or mappack for me…
    very early release
    5/10 (for good detail mapping)

    Play It Later

This was a fun teaser showing off some top Black Mesa style architecture with some great custom texturing. I’m a fan of the looping-back layout, although there should probably be some more obvious guidance to help lead the player to the next step. My only other complaint is that this was way too easy, with double health/HEV chargers all over the place – play on hard if you normally play on medium.

It’s too bad this was just a taste of a bigger mod that was never completed. Although Adam did further develop the idea of the large outdoor slanted elevator for use in one of his maps for Nightwatch (which I understand may get some kind of map release one of these days…).

It’s still fun to play through even though it leaves you kind of unsatisfied in the end. That was the only thing that really bugged me about Parallax, except for some of the unreasonably placed crates, but after all this is a Half-Life mod.

  15. Play It Now!

The first map is excellent. There are challenging fights, beautiful and original architecture. There is a simple puzzle “press the buttons”, but the layout is complex, so the puzzle is not as easy as it sounds. Looks like this map was supposed to be somewhere in the middle of a planned mod, as there’s no real introduction, we just arrive somewhere with weapons and suit.

Replacing the sky with a Terragen render while leaving the mountains intact was a nice touch. It looks good, especially the shining moon.

If there was a story, it was left beyond this release. Here there’s only one scripted scene where the scientist follows the soldier.

I liked the outdoor place where there’s an elevator and ladder. After finally getting up there, I got to the second map and couldn’t find an exit from there. Noclipping revealed that there’s nothing – it’s an unfinished map, the author abandoned it after making two rooms. If the author made an outro, nothing would tell that this is an unfinished beta.

  16. Play It Now!

It’s too bad it will never be completed because it was pretty good. The difficulty was the hardest at the beginning and was more balanced for the rest. I did have problems with the doors near the end. Once I went through the 2 doors and then tried to go back I got stuck somehow inside and neither door would open. Overall well worth playing

    Personal Favourite

Well I think the rate is symbolic here in this one, because you know, we are playing Adam Foster’s stuff here, he is on valve now and I think for sure, he didn’t was hired because he was a low polish modder, no way!; Adam’s work is quality, and here in parallax we can assure that, and conssider that this is just a beta, I think if Adam would have been continuing this mod, then we’d probably have a really cool gold mod in our fingers.

The prelude mod to the well aclaimed Minerva is some Hl1 cool one called Some Place Else…, which is available in Project Quantum Leap 1, if I don’t get wrong, maybe is not strictly the prelude, but has the style of Minerva on it, and if u play it then you will now why Adam’s work is really well done and polished, and conssidering we have a HL1 mod, that’s really worthy then.

So play this one and all Adam’s work due to is highly recommendable regarding cool clever cobat and mapping design along with tons of quality stuff, which is hard to find nowdays in many, not all, but many mods.

  18. Play It Now!

OK. I cant believe I’ve not rated this one until now, its an Adam Foster map afterall. Although I’ve never played this before I was expecting good things despite only playing his later HL2 maps. It lived up to what I thought he could do and shows why Minerva was so good, he understands (understood at the time) the necessity of good gameplay, not just good mapping skills.

The look and feel of Parallax fits well into the original HL universe and flows quite nicely, the only problem I encountered was down to me! at the beginning its easy to assume that you only have the crowbar, however you also have the MP5 with 225 rounds DOH!

Despite this being unfinished and very short, it is definitely a must play. A finished mod would have almost certainly been a PF.

  19. Play It Now!

Really enjoy this, too bad it didn’t carry on, and on.

  20. Maybe?

I honestly didn’t like it that much.

  21. Play It Later

Great fun for a beta, a pity it won’t be finished ever (?)
The start was heavy, I died like 2 times cause of the mass of soldiers lol
At least there’s plenty ammo 😛

  22. What constitutes a Personal Favourite for other readers is none of your business. If they loved it, then what you or I think of it is of no concern.

I don’t think anybody gives a “free pass” just because something is small, but neither do we judge something on its length.

Just because you ahve given onlky 2 PF from 100 does not mean your opinion is more important. Just means you are harder to please – nothing more.

  23. Play It Now!

Great mapping and gameplay, even though it’s unfinished.

  24. Play It Now!

Yes, it’s unfinished, yes, it’s very hard and yes, it’s short but I like it a lot.

  25. Two maps, but basically only one map. Although, that first map is gigantic. Not in terms of size, but in its layout. It’s very complex and every area is well interconnected, making it pretty realistic. Alot of areas involve the average ‘press this button to open some unknown door somewhere else’ and sometimes I didn’t know what door opened from the button. There was some dead end helipad that didn’t go anywhere but looked like it did. Turns out you had to backtrack out of the multi-story building to an elaborate lift that you passed thru. Given this is the guy who made someplace else and minerva metastasis, you’d wonder what kind of ‘story’ would be in this mod if it were continued.

  26. Play It Now!

It’s sad that it is unfinished. The mod uses the space of each floor very well!

  27. Play It Later

A quite balanced mod and fun to walk around with some puzzling. Still need to take care of some actions some dangerous soldiers are crawling around hiding with AR grenades or a shotgun. There’s an invincible scientist in the chopper area, I do not really understand the real purpose of his action when the fight starts. Is he supposed to escape somewhere? It’s like he’s trying to move away. The second area hasn’t been developed. A pity.
