  1. Phillip says Maybe

I have only given this a MAYBE recommendation because it’s not the standard HL experience and it is very short.

I quite enjoyed the gameplay but found the wall textures quite annoying, I feel it would have been better if they were BM-style corridors, although I understand why the author chose not to use them.

You will almost certainly get lost but if you are careful and persevere, you should find your way out.

  2. Maybe?

I’m giving this a “maybe” for the same reason Philip did. It’s an interesting experience, doesn’t take any time to set up and play, clearly had enough work put in to it, but doesn’t have a ton to offer.

Personally, I liked that the textures made it look like the original game (there’s a nice touch where some crates have fruit painted on them), but the rest of it isn’t as well executed. Picking up all the pellets to escape is kind of fun at first, but then it’s frustrating when you have to run around the confusing, repetitive maze hunting down that last pellet you didn’t grab the first time around because an enemy was standing on top of it. The map isn’t huge enough for it to be a dealbreaker, but it’s still annoying (and something that wasn’t a problem in Pac-Man).

Having to pick up all the pellets also makes the map have a small inconsistency with actual Pac-Man. You don’t get your HEV suit or weapons until you pick all the pellets up, but the power pellets act as ammo crates… for a revolver you don’t have. I would’ve preferred if the gameplay matched Pac-Man better, giving you a few seconds where you can kill enemies (or one shot to try to fight back with) after grabbing the power pellet, possibly with respawning enemies after. I’m not sure if HL1 is is capable of all that, but it would’ve been more interesting.

This should have been called PAC-LIFE instead. And also reminded me some project I hope we see here in RTSL; called “PAC MAN Source”.

Overall I got entertained and quite like a bit the mingling of this 2 very different games. It was nice to collect that Pacman food and at the end retrieve the weapons in order to blow off some xenians.

Here’s really not too much to say, Is just old Pac man mingled with old HL. Textures were odd but feel OK to me, and the last part of the map where you can see through the coin receiver of that machine was a cool detail.

This is a perfect 5 min. Play it Later.

    Maybe?

Hah, not a bad little map here. It is Pac-Man at heart, although I really did wish the vitamin crates allowed you to eat the aliens like in the arcade version. But, persevere and you can finally grab your HEV and weapons and turn the tables.

A bit frustrating at times, going round in circles. The toughest part is that before you grab the HEV, you have no idea what your health is. My advice is use the almighty quicksave key.

Not for everyone, but a nice little 5 to 10 minute distraction map.

  5. Play It Now!

Maybe I liked this more than I should, but I always liked Pac-Man, and this map was really enjoyable for me.

The ghosts are replaced with Xen enemies, like zombies, headcrabs and vortigaunts. The gameplay is just Pac-Man, but in 1st person, because why not. The wall textures can get annoying, but not that much. I also liked the small ending section, that’s pretty smart.

Overall, I recommend this map. It’s just Pac-Man and HL, 2 great things in one. What’s to hate?
