Let me talk about the actual mod first. It’s detailed, immersive and polished. The text on the screen reminds me (and everyone) of Minerva, but he doesn’t have a monopoly on the idea, so that’s cool. That said, I dislike it and would have preferred something else.
The layout and design is excellent and the few enemy encounters are well constructed. However, this release is just too short for the quality of work.
When I play short, average releases I am happy but for headcrab’s sake this is fantastic in my opinion.
Which brings me onto the packaging issue. I’d seen a demo of this mod but chose not to play it because it looked so good. Having seen “final version” for this release I was excited. That excitement faded to disappointed after ten minutes when I had finished this release.
It’s clear that anything released earlier is not part of this release. The author states he will release maps as he finishes them and I will be writing to him in the strongest and most persuasive way possible to stop him.
I understand that releasing things when they are done is good for his motivation but it’s like an author releasing his book one chapter at a time.
To fully appreciate the work it must be released in one go, even if we have to wait a while, ultimately it’s worth it.
I recommend you play this but don’t expect more than 10 minutes play time. I loved it, but it’s too short even for me – which is saying something!
I also suggest that if you agree with me about the release, please contact him as well.
Hi there,
I’m the author of the mod. Just wanted to say thanks for the great review and to respond to a few things.
I know it’s short for a first release. But by releasing the mod in chunks I can not only get gameplay out more often, I can polish everything based on feedback. I’m already making changes to the upcoming maps because of player feedback and suggestions.
It may not be a universally popular decision, but it has its benefits. But I will evaluate each release going forward to try to make sure to pause where it makes the most sense. More sense than where the initial offering left off, at least.
Also, for anyone wondering about the demo, that content will be making its way into the final release at some point, so if you didn’t get to play it before, you will eventually.
Thanks again for all the feedback everyone. Keep it coming.
I have alredy played the demo and I loved it, so good , espetially in the game play so polished as phillip said, and iam writing this just based on the demo, so im glad the whole mod came out ill playit right away, defenitly those kind of mods that left good taste after u play them!
I have removed your recommendation image as the demo map is not part of this release. You must play a map before you add a recommendation image.
Oh I understand now!!!, it seems to be that the demo contains different maps to this one release!, i’ve play it now so I understand that, but I think I liked the demo more than this release ;-
The first few minutes of this small mod are an absolute joy. The way the combine architecture gives way to a carpeted manor, and then to ruined streets is perfectly done… And all the time we can hear the boom boom of a Strider. Way to increase suspense! Combat was good, health and ammo placement was good, layout was good.
If it means we get maps more frequently, I don’t mind episodic mods like this, so long as additional chapters don’t force me to play from the beginning every time.
More please!
The quality & polish are there, background music & effects great, atmosphere good, for all of which the author should be congratulated, however I didn’t find the gameplay particularily exciting or challenging and agree with Phillip that this would be better to be held back until a longer mod is available then the “wow” factor might persist.
I agree that this is way too short but what there is, is good and I enjoyed it more than Final Project Diary which I’m about halfway through and probably won’t finish (Sorry Leon). As it stands it is more of a lead in to a larger mod which is a pity as this could have been the first I could have called a personal favourite.
I didn’t find the onscreen text too obtrusive, because if it is done right it’s simply receiving messages through your HUD.
My main niggle is the ending, it could have done with getting past some devious puzzle or intense combat before the “to be continued” along with taking less time to play than to download>install>restart steam>select the game>start playing.
As for releasing maps in the way the author has, in my humble opinion it’s entirely up to him as he’s not charging for them and to E-mail him expecting him to change what after all is his choice doesn’t sit right with me. In some ways it’s a bit like a certain individual some time ago demanding an explanation of why PP (at the time) didn’t include art mods. I have to stand by the same principle as the first paragraph from my post in The “Art” Mods Debate on the 5th May 2010.
http://www.planetphillip.com/posts/the-art-mods-debate/
Would you like your readers E-mail to tell you how to run your site. If anyone does E-mail the author, please make it clear it’s only a suggestion.
Lastly if the demo has content not in this release, could someone provide a link please.
I am not “telling” anybody how to release their mod, just expressing an opinion. Have I said I won’t post it if he doesn’t change it? No. Have I made any demands? No. I have a right to email him and share my thoughts , as I often request the thoughts of MY users about the site.
My apologies if you feel I’m having a go at you as that was not the intention, but your wording was quite strong in the way volcane has pointed out below. I only commented on how the words came across to me.
If you’re in London sometime, contact me and I’ll buy you a pint to make up for it.
No problem. I’ll let you know next time I hit the tube.
So very short. So very, very sweet.
Marvellous mapping, and great, well paced combat.
The start of a great, story driven mod.
‘this is map 1 of 7 for the initial release’
Oh boy, I’m looking forward to the next 6. I hope the Demo map is one of them – that was magnificent.
The ‘minerva Metastasis” style of text and content is brilliant. Keep it up cesig. A great enhancement.
Great idea to release in instalments of a map at a time. We get new maps from time to time and cesig gets feed back.
Talking of which:
Cons: Just one for me. I did not like the beginning. I think it would have been better to extract the player in the alleyway.
Pros: Everything else.
A map by an expert modder and it shows.
Any plans after map 7 for this mod, cesig?
Really?
Sounds like a very strong opinion though.
That’s a very definite statement. It comes across as though you are confusing your opinion with fact.
Yes, a statement of my opinion.
I’m actually doing this because I feel it will help the author get the response he deserves, not just to make life hard for him!
SUPERB!! Can not wait for the next 6 releases!
Well done. Mapping, gameplay, enemy placement were near perfect. Just two items I can remember that I didn’t like. First, when you exit the building and first see the strider, there is a mound of dirt against the building up to the second floor. Seems an unlikely place for a mound of dirt. Having to jump from the 2nd floor to the ground with no retreat would be more believable. Also, the ambient sound of automatic gunfire never decreases in volume, no matter where you are. It should fade out in some places. Other than that, it was total fun for about 15 minutes.
Overheid’s first installment was neat but not memorable for me. I don’t think there is much story development and after playing through the first map I still cannot really tell you what the mod is about, outside of the typical “fight the Combine” mission line-up.
The best mapping in this release was the awesome Combine architecture inside the hallway. After that was over, the mod became like so many others. I hope to see more sweet Combine interiors soon.
The crowbar is enough to complete this very very very short mod.
Nice though!
A Play it now, would be a personal favorite if it were longer.
I did get stuck at the part where you go into the cellar, and have to climb over some shelves, I assumed I was supposed to stack those annoying cardboard boxes, but I’m not sure that was the real solution to that puzzle.
One thing that struck me as above average in this mod was the lighting, the lighting was very dramatic in some places, but not an eyes-sore.
I do wish he used zombies in a more interesting manner, they often just felt strewn about.
I lagged a lot at the start, but past that I went on unhindered.
This is a great small map. Visuals are great, and resupply and combat is perfectly paced (well it is if you play it on hard)
The atmosphere, aided by the meticulous detail is pretty good.
Unfortunately, it is far too short to really recommend as a ‘drop everything and play it”
The picture says “Play it Now;, but it is closer to a 5 star “Play it Later” kind of map
Nevertheless
Excellent
I think play it later sums up my thoughts perfectly. Play it later, like when all of the maps are released (this is after all only part 1 of 7). I love the idea of updating episodically, but one map is just too little.
However it is a fun map and I look forward to the complete Mod.
Good!, but too short i’d preffer that this modder release the whole game together rather than “in parts”, the textures looked great and has good gameplay, but it would be better to play it as a whole mod because this one have a good future!
I experienced incredible lag in room (image 12), though I’m running a hi-end system w/W7.
Not sure why that was, but after a lot of struggle, I managed to stack some pallets on top of two blue cartons and fluke a landing up onto the ledge to go through the hole in the wall.
Personally, I’m not sure what all the fuss is about. The gameplay was ok, but nothing out of the ordinary to write home about. Fight a few zombies, shoot a few troops… claustrophibic, dim, no cool puzzles. Maybe I played a different map than the posted download…
Still, thanks for the effort.
I’m afraid I have to agree with other posters who think it would be better to wait until all or at least several of the “installments” are available. This mod clearly is trying to develop some kind of storyline, with the console-like messages at the start (a la Minerva.) Also, with the crazy multi-layered soundscape, including the strider looming so very nearby, it gives the feeling of urgency and desperation – but then that feeling is ripped from you suddenly as the mod abruptly ends.
Although I understand the author’s decision to release this in smaller parts, it really deserves to be experienced in it full once it’s done. I see potential here, and the winding-twisty path you take is a lot of fun, but there’s not enough here for me to give a genuine rating, to be honest.
I will wait patiently, and give a full proper review once all segments have been released.
Uh, WTF??? This is well done, some good fights, good locations, but 100th WAY TOO SHORT…
Can’t wait for the next part, thought, but for now “play it later” because it is done in 5 or 10 minutes, lol.
I’m very impressed with what is on display here and very excited for a final product. Both of the environments featured were done very well.
While I can’t really comment on gameplay, since there wasn’t much, what little was shown was very polished. It doesn’t have me excited on that front, but I’m not worried about it either.
The story should be good, I really like the idea of the voice guiding the player.
I will definitely be watching this mod, but I won’t be playing until the full product is released. However, I do appreciate the decision to release each map separately, since there will be a lot of testing done by then.
Not entirely sure how anyone could rate this a personal favourite yet, but it’s a definite “play it now” for me.
I thought this was really good, like most others, way too short, I was just getting into it, I’m looking forward to the rest of it if this is going to be the quality of it. Well done…hope we don’t have to wait too long…
A very short mod, even for allowing that maybe it’s only part 1 of 7 chapters, it’s still a bit short for me to get that excited about.
What we do have is a well designed mod in terms of set design, textures and lighting; apart from this I found the mod too swallow to be released in this form, far better to have made the first part of the release longer with more substance to the gameplay.
The play through was spoilt to a large extent with noticeable frame rate drop-off, this effected the action sequences, and I can only hope that the author fixes this issue with subsequent releases.
As the first part of a series of chapters “Overheid” is absolutely stunning. The textures are spot on and the lighting of the scenes adds to a very well developed atmosphere. The underground storeroom with the cracked open walls is a visual delight and just as entertaining to play. The shaking walls and ceiling from the overhead strider battle give a real sense of being there.
This mod shows the real importance of good sound effects with the constant thumping and incessant gunfire driving you along.
Visual and aural excellence and outstanding game play make this a real winner. Though it is quite short its still only the first part.
So I look forward to more of this quality, hence ” a personal favourite” from me.
Way too short if nice mod… You probably should wait for the whole thing to be released, before playing.
Wonderful layout and mapping design,
the enemies are placed very well, the areas are entertaining and are lighted beautiful, the transition from different areas happens fast, but very stylish and agreeable.
If it wouldn’t just be that short…
It would be personal favourite if it didn’t abrutle end.
The environments were beautiful, the little combat there was, was fun. Maybe you should have finished it before releasing.
this is worth the play. has it ever continued with any further releases? It certainly has potential
The reason I give this a play it later, is that it is way too short. If I have to grade on the quality, then it would get a higher score. But how can I recommend a mod that lasts 10 minutes?
If they were the best 10 minutes of your life, why not? 😛
Station 51 for instance is a short map/mod (maybe more than 10 mins) but it’s my favorite of all time!
had to change the gameinfo.txt but after that it runs under linux without problems.
I really enjoyed this old mod (I had to download the SDK patch from MODDB fwiw). The levels are nicely designed and detailed. It felt like a real experience and the enemy were thought out well without ever being OTT. Yup I really liked this old mod but it isn’t very long… Also, my old Mac had performance issues at times. Worth a play but leaves you wanting MORE (was there ever any development for this since 2010?)

This was really an interesting intro with lots of action good design and intersting path to progress I think there was no major aditional release to this intro…sadly 🙁

Looks good. Plays bad. You wait the whole meal for the main course and it never comes. Why a whole mod for one map.

So unfortunately this mod is unfinished. I don’t mind one map but not finishing the mod is a big deal to me. I’m not leaving this a review
