Really nice looking map albiet a bit shorter than expected for the file size. Gameplay design is quite good too, however it could do with some health packs here and there. Thanks!

  2. The Abandoned Workshops

    Gameplay:
Pretty much balanced all the way through keeping this one enjoyable till the end. Nothing more than a simple action map where you must fight your way to the end of the map but that doesn’t make this a bad map. The amount of enemies and control over the well thought out weapon, ammo and health is really good and keeps consistent. The fights don’t end up being too challenging and some explosive barrels and other props around to help during combat which was very useful. The flow was good, with battles in each area adding more enemies each time saving the largest till last. The flares shot in the sky were interesting making it feel like you’re really an intruder adding to atmosphere.

    Design:
Solid and clean design throughout the whole map, with a great structure to everything with a realistic touch to it. Large open areas with good details here and there with a good amount of props used in decent locations. Texturing is very good and blends well with the theme and rest of the map. Lighting was above average, nothing too special or anything bad but kept the map well lit without any problems.

    Conclusion:
A decent map, with really well controlled action and solid design.

    NPSA
Fast and furious combat with music to much but comes to an end all too soon. Another example of part 1 of something with promise, but I guess as with most of this short maps will never see a full fledged game.

  4. Phillip says Play It!

For a map that was released back in 2006, this must have looked pretty cool. It’s empty and blocky by today’s standards and there are too many player clips for my liking but it is still well built.

if you watch my video, you will notice that after I died near the end, the APC re-appeared and I don’t know if that’s a bug or just bad luck.

The combat is pretty standard, but the author does a good job of making you feel that the combine soldiers are moving around the map with you.

All in all, I quite enjoyed this and considering it’s so old (like me!) it’s not bad at all. I said PLAY IT! but more for nostalgia sake than because it’s amazing.

  5. Play It Later

This is a fun map and for then it must have been even better. Like Phillip said, the architecture is very simplistic and blocky compared to what people are used to, but I think that the fact that most areas were really large and open was a good thing.

The map is mainly combat-based, but you won’t see any zombies or headcrabs. I like the way the enemies are placed and I also like the APC section, though it was over pretty soon.

Overall, this map isn’t anything too original or breathtaking, but if you have 5-10 minutes to spare on something simple, then try this map out.

  6. Play It Later

I also agree. This is old and very square without much detail and also looks very dull lighting-wise. It’s so big and open but the soldiers are pretty tough and ammo/health isn’t in an abundance so it forces you to save regularly and also rethink how to attack certain parts of the game.

I like the mounted gun part. But the aiming seemed difficult?

Rubbish compared to what we see today but, for 2006, it’s superb fun and worth playing once.

  7. I tried this two times. First time i jumped over something, i wasn’t supposed to, and i couldn’t get back, and nothing happened anymore. Second time i had the same problem as Philip. In the area with the mounted gun, the armored car wouldn’t come. I gave up.
There’s too many problems with this map. As was said here earlier, there are a lot of invisible walls. On the other hand, there are places you can go that will get you stuck. It lacks a clear flow.

  8. Play It Later

A pretty good map where you fight around some buildings with limited supplies. It’s a little short but worth a play

    Think Twice

The lighting and mood of this map are really all it has going for it. Unfortunately the map is blocky although the layout is decent. And I liked how the combat was handled, the soldiers don’t just charge you and actually act reasonably when you start shooting back.

What really sinks this map is that it’s not balanced. There is no health in the map other than the tiny vials you might pick up from a dead Combine. Ammo is also scarce, god help you if you start running low.

To boot, the final area was also broken for me (looks like the same happened to Phillip). I never did get an APC, the Combine soldiers just stopped coming and then I ran into an invisible wall. The end.

Not really worth your time, sorry.

  10. Play It Later

Good combat but a frustratingly small amount of health. I also got stuck at the end with the APC not appearing. I noclipped like Phillip in his video and found that as you walk up the road towards theAPC there is an opening in the rocks to the left with a rebel soldier who talks to you. When you go up to him there is the sound of falling rocks, which then goes to blackout and the appearance of the credits. That I guess is the intended ending of the map.

    1. Further to my previous review, I played this again a few weeks later and the APC did appear in the final battle allowing me to finish the game as intended.

  11. Think Twice

This mod provides some combat that can be fun. And that’s kinda all it has to offer.
The level design is not spectacular, and sometimes not even good.
This mod is also broken. I got to an area with a gun, which was not working, making the combat in that area very annoying. After defeating all the combine in the area, I was blocked by an invisible wall, and there was no other way to continue. After noclipping through the map I gave up.
I would only recommend this mod if you want to shoot some combine for 8 minutes.

  12. Play It Now!

No real story but good movement throughout. Had a moment where I needed to be actively shooting or be shot at and killed. Ended too soon. I wanted to continue on but found that it came to a grinding halt.
Keep working on it so we can pick-up where we left off.

    Play It Now!

This was a nice combat map. Indeed the style and all around it feels very 2006. But despite that, the combat is entertaining enough for me to recommend it as a Play it Now.

Also, the whole map is very blocky but that doesn’t really matter as at least has a simple layout to fulfill, which basically is going through the CMB occupied area and join with the rebels at the end. Also, the path could be confusing at some points but the whole combat section was nice to play.

  14. Maybe?

I did not really want my first review on this site to be a negative one but here we are anyway.

The blocky look of it didn’t bother me personally, nor did the short length. The lack of health, however was extremely annoying. I spent most my time in this map running as far away from the Combine Soldiers so they had less change to hit and picking them off one by one from range. Maybe Im just blind and there where health packs everywhere, but I didnt see any.

Its a shame too, because the map is fun on easy where you loose a lot less health per hit. But I still think there should have been more health in general.
The ending was also very confusing, so I just left after I killed all the Combines at the turret (just like Philip).

I would give the map bonus points for being so old tho. If you plan on playing this map: don’t play it on hard, and you may enjoy it.

(Im sorry for being so harsh :c)

  15. A good mod but was confused and surprised at the sudden ending of what i though would be a longer mod. otherwise it was brilliant with good music, shoot outs and a dark spooky ish setting of a petrol depot at night.

  16. Play It Later

This map gave me some pretty good fighting scenes. The missing cover from fire can be found from the multiple props the map maker has left for us. The map itself is pretty linear, and it plays pretty fast if you know where to go.
8/10 would like to use a barrel as cover again.

  17. Play It Now!

A really professionally made short map.

Open outdoor combat areas are interesting, multi-tiered and generously sprinkled with varieties of cover.

The action is really fast paced, and you get into it right away. Lots of ramps and stairways to take advantage of or be attacked from, so you can’t afford to stay still.

Areas you can’t get to are blocked off in a way that doesn’t break the suspension of disbelief – no invisible walls here.

Ammo and health supplies are tight, but I found that just made it rewardingly difficult rather than frustrating.

  18. Maybe?

This map looks and plays great. It reminds me of the AirEx chapters in HL2 Beta. The map is really open and fun to play. The gunplay is good, combine are put in fun places (albeit, there are too many at the end and just in general the combine placement feels spammy at times). Ammo is a problem. You’re given crowbar, pistol, smg1, ar2, and grenade, However you’ll only get ammo for smg1. There is also no real end screen, as when you finally kill all the combine (no doubt with many ‘give item_healthkits’ in your console) you’re simply stuck in the final arena area. Pretty fun, but let down by it’s lackluster enemy placement and lack of ammo.

  19. fissile2

I have ported this map to gmod for TTT. May I upload it to the workshop?

  20. Maybe?

No ammo or health unless dropped by combine. The ending area is blocked by invisible wall. Had potential. Maybe one play through.

  21. Play It Later

Short and fun map. Combats are fun but if there were some health kits it would be better. The visual of the map is very nice.

  22. Maybe?

It’s alright for what it is. Just a short mod with constant action and you have to keep moving at all times.

    Story

Not much of one. You just need to escape the onslaught of soldiers that come after you through the whole map. It does have a feel of being able to take place during HL2 though, like in either Water Hazard or Highway 17.

    Presentation

It actually is quite a good-looking map. It’s clear that by 2006, modders had gotten a good grasp over this engine and a better understanding of how to make things look nice. It looks like a real place and the lighting is quite good, as well as lending to that feeling mentioned before of being able to take place during a part of HL2.

The mod also uses music, though given how short it is and how fast you have to move in order to avoid taking too much damage, the tracks come and go very quickly.

    Gameplay

This feels like a map meant for speedrunning, though in 2006 I’m not sure that would’ve been part of the design back then. But in essence, I mean that it’s a map where you just can’t stop moving. You don’t get a moment to relax as you’re constantly being chased down by soldiers the whole time until the end. You have to pick and choose your actual fights here, cause you don’t get much ammo, and what you do get is just from what you can pick up from killed soldiers.

It’s a map that I feel relies on trial-and-error from the player, given that you’re likely to die a few times. But as you keep playing you get a better sense of where to go and when you should fight. It’s a very different feeling from most custom maps I play, and while it’s fun, it’s not something I personally enjoy most of the time.

    Conclusion

While it’s definitely fun, it’s hard to say if I recommend it much, given how short it is and how different it feels from typical HL2 in terms of its gameplay and feel. Still, might be worth giving a shot.
