The final version of this mod has been released and is published here: Mistake: Final.
The comments have been closed on this page and all comments related to Mistake should now be made on that page. Thank you.
There has been a new beta/demo released of the latest version of this mod. Unfortunately the author listed the October 2007 release as final. He has now released a new version. This version contains approximately 1 hour’s worth of gameplay and is approximately 70% of the finished release.
I have spoken with the author and discussed the fact that the demo contains most of the mod that many users won’t want to play it twice. Therefore if you download and play the version 2 then be prepared to have to replay it when the final version is released.
This second version contains more weapons and enemies than the original release in October. The author also consider this release to be an extended beta test and would appreciate detailed feedback.
I have split this page into two sections, one for each version. For normal players I highly recommend you wait for the final version, which is approximately 2 months away.
Author’s Note:“This mod will let us into a horroristic world in the Andrew Parker asylum and we will live through (or not) in the view of a mental patient. The mod’s primal object is not the insane bloodbath. The real object is to escape from the huge building which holds a lot of secrets.”
- New textures
- New sounds
- New HUD
- New maps
- New menu
- Changed and new models

I’ve just started to play it and have to stop. The author says you will have about 15-20 minutes of play. SO far it looks pretty good and the although I haven’t had to do anything except move the tension is building.
I’ve just added a Steam installation notice to the main post. SoOrry I forgot to this earlier.
This mods takes us to what appears to be a deserted mental clinic of some sort.Anyway, you begin completely naked, then you make your way (naked) until you find a flashlight, this little fellow does not run out of batteries, after some scares and horror-movie posters you find a knife! after finding some keys and a switch the mod ends, just like that.Just kidding.Design:
Above average, detailed enough to immerse anyone into the little adventure, very moody and dark, nothing pitch-black except in some cutscenes which actually are quite well done.
Gameplay:
If you played Afraid of Monsters then you know how to play this mod, you only have a flashlight and a knife to use them as the adventure progresses. You’ll need to find keys and switches to finish it.
Conclusion/Final thoughs.
This is one fine piece of mod and you should play it if you liked AoM or They Hunger, so far those are the creepiest zombies I ever encountered.
This reminds me of a simular full game that came out in 1998 called “Sanitarium” by ASC games. (I still have it) DL’ng this one now to play in the dark!!
Sanitarium was way hard and mind numbing lol. This one is very easy.It has potential but needs longer maps, more than 4 enemies and a real purpose.
Just got done with this one! I did play with all lites out except for a dim keyboard lite! You realy had no idea what was going to happen next! I liked the lite effects, but it could have had more monsters and longer maps! I won’t give away the ending, playit yourself! BTW, andyb, that’s what made “Sanitarium” good lots of puzzles and very creepy!! So I gotta say:
Very short but very creepy. No story (though somewhat self-explanatory) so it depends entirely on atmosphere. The creatures and textures are well done.
It’s just arround 30 min of playtime, enemy models are quite disapointing like some other content (non breakable bottles)but appart from that and perhaps a small story by on text message all was well put together to create an enjoyable experience.
A cool mod. It is scary, but really, rise the volume and turn off the lights. Even better if you use headphones. When you feel that some scary event is going to happen, low down you head (ingame) and walk (corridors…) A friendly advice that really works, unless you really want to feel scared for real (or not..)
I’ve just finished playing it. I have a lot of respect for what the three authors have created and am impressed. The problem is that I don’t like scary mods. I prefer well-lit rooms and a different atmosphere.Assuming you like this style of mod then my recommendation is:
However, if you are not a fan of scary mods then it’s:
Number of Maps: 12The Game? Half-Life One, the land of adjusting ties and stolen dohnuts.
The Mod? Mistake
The Author? Somebody… Oh, wait, Body? What kind of name is that?
Is it Good? Nope. Not, by a long shot.
Notes: You lose, abruptly. Yes. That is where it ends. No, you can’t avoid it. I thought it was a non-standard game over too.
Give Us A Story There, Bub: There is none. You wake up, get teleported around, kill a couple of things, get teleported around and die. I’d be more funny, but the mod sucked all the happiness out of me.
Go ahead, make my lunch: This game is a perfect example of what not to do in a video game. Anyone remember my review of HMS Defiance? It was one of the ugliest games in Half-Life 2 existance, but you know what? It had substance. It had gameplay. It had fun, for goodness sake. I gave it a decent score.
I’ll start with the good things. Mistake, for what it’s worth, is a decent mod in terms of textures and architecture. I was certainly impressed by the high quality textures and I certainly didn’t have a problem with the levels themselves, as claustraphobic as they may be. Sound, while low, was top-notch and what passed off as music was great… But….
Argh. I can’t do this. This mod is bad. This mod is perpectually dark, impressively boring and a good deal less fun then any other modification you could even think about. You know why They Hunger was a popular modification? Because it had scary for a short time, then it turned into fun. This modification is not fun. It’s about thirty minutes of walking down stupidly dark corridorrs watching random cinematics and being randomly teleported to random areas for no reason. There’s no storyline here, no explanation for what the hell is going on, there’s just you running around in the pitch black waiting for something random to teleport you to another random area until you die in a glorious, euphoric defeat. Then you can lean back and say “Man, I feel like carving my head off with a pitchfork.”
This mod had everything going for it. It had great textures, great architecture and great sounds. Unfortunately, that’s all it has. It’s the modification equivalent of the dumb blond down the street who only loves her boyfriend because he has a fast car and a lot of money. Remember kids. Dressed up fetch quests and cheap scares does not equal a good game! If that was it, then I wouldn’t be this angry. No. This mod seems to have the need to randomly jack your viewpoint to give you cheap scares after another with quasi-hallucinations that’s apparently supposed to “build up tension’. If it’s not forcing you to look at something, then it’s washing your viewpoint with red and constantly teleporting you from room to room for absolutely no reason whatsoever. If you try to be deep and figure things out, you will come up with nothing. If you just play for the gameplay, you will come up with nothing.
In Other Words…: To say this is fun is like saying that Adolf Hitler was a like-minded pacifist. If it wasn’t for the top-notch textures, atmosphere and sound, I would slip this mod as one of the worst things ever produced for free. I know I am legendary for being hard on games, but this is just downright painful.

A little harsh but thats normal for you.As I said it has potential if the author keeps at it.So for my second thoughts after playing again I say
I really wanted to enjoy Mistake and was hoping to be scared if only a little. Unfortunately, this was never achieved.
I found this mod very uninteresting and tiresome with the endless corridors, rooms, locked doors, etc. About the only thing decent was the lighting and maybe the music.
The models used were absolutely heinous and looked like something you might have had for lunch or dinner that didn’t agree with your stomach. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such poor quality models before.
There was a small tricky bit for me finding something hidden within boxes which was absolutely ludicrous since none of the other boxes in the whole mod were breakable.
As Fluffy stated above, don’t try to reason with a story or know what’s going on.
I hate to do it, but my recommendation has to be:
I have to thank Author Body for creating this mod. While it was an intensely painful experience playing it, it was an incredibly enjoyable experience reviewing it and one of the few funniest things I’ve ever done in the past year. This doesn’t level my review of Fall in terms comedical material, but more then makes up for it in zingers.
Anywho, Mistake’s fate is sad due to the fact that did everything so well that they forgot to make a video game out of it. It’s one of the most beautiful, expertly crafted Half-Life One modifications outside of Heart of Evil. Unfortunately, it’s about as engaging as watching a piece of grass on a surfboard. If you’re going to take an extreme, I’d rather have an ugly game with good gameplay then a pretty game with absolutely no gameplay. I play Half-Life to kill things, not look at wall-covered blood and listen to babies laugh.
Bah. Maybe I’m just simple.
Pretty-looking mod with great textures (and depending on how you look at those… creatures, the textures work or are horrific on them, personally, I found them to be passable).
Unfortunately though, it’s quite boring and short, and the only real thing it has going for it is the atmosphere, created by the industrial grinding and creepy ambiance. If you’re a Silent Hill fan, the influences are evident, and the use of the series” music is definite a treat!
7/10
What’s with the movie posters anyway?
Thanks the opinions. As I see, the biggest problem was the small amount of the maps, I’ll try to make more maps for the next episode (as my time let me do it). I purpose the story too. This little mod is only ~15 min from the character life… have more 5-10 year from his life.
I never once said the mod was too short.. I thought the mod was rather large myself.. It’s just incredibly boring with the heavily noted lack-of-anything-else-to-do-besides-look-at-stuff-TM.
This is actually just the first episode in a series. Apparently they’re working on the 2nd part, due in about a month.
I enjoyed this mod even though it is very short and the ending is a tad disappointing. As much as I enjoy a good session of gun-slinging, I am very much an explorative player and this mod is all about figuring out where to go and how to get there. The time-warp (teleport) cuts are a little disorienting but that just carries through the theme of the mental asylum and shows that your character is probably not entirely all there. In fact, I got the idea at one point that I (as the character) might be exploring the facility only in my mind.
Level design is good with nice textures that work well for the environment. The monster models, while varied, are very low-def. They might have been in keeping with the original HL graphics but after Hi-Def, they look very dated.
All in all, go for it if you enjoy scarey type games. This one gets high points on atmosphere, but monsters are few, puzzles are easy, and the map is incredibly short.
Good : “Cool” design
Bad : Annoying map design (Why not right clue? Where I go?)
Very great mod. Its easy. U dont need to use a lot of grey matter to think what to do here. Its dark, it does what it says: it leaves you atleast tense for some moments.I did well and I think I got the story too. good job.
Uh… Fluff, if you died and lost then you didn’t beat the mod. That’s not the end, not by a long shot.
First of all, I’m really not sure what everybody’s gripe is with this mod. Reviewers were apparently bored, but I was tensed up the whole time. The mod’s intentions were to use the environment to scare the player rather than any monster, and I honestly felt it did that. I jumped a few times from some of the more cleverly placed events and, honestly, this version is a vast improvement from the initial release in terms of a fear factor.
However, a lot of the end result was sheer disappointment because as tensed up and paranoid as I was throughout the mod, nothing really came of it. It’s like watching a slasher flick, with all the tensing up moments winding up to a bloody scene, but somehow in the end no one dies. I was seriously hoping that this mod would have some moments that’d mess with my mind, but the best horror it could come up with was a two-headed doctor with heavy amounts of hp. Yes, it’s a bit weird, but there’s never an explanation justifying his two heads, so it’s very unnecessary.
Much of the storyline or explanation is very disjointed involving a woman, an asylum, a dead baby, a random doctor, and zombies. Silent Hill had random monsters as well, but at least the storyline and motivation of the main character was clear. Speaking of disjoint, you will magically go from room to room to room without any explanation at all. First, I was in an asylum, then a bloodied Silent Hill world, then in a house, then an apartment, and the teleporting sequences kept going. There was one part where I was supposed to go down into a basement, I walk down the stairs, and suddenly I’m in another area of the hospital!! It could be the basement, but there’s no stairs leading back up and no explanation of how I got anywhere! I’m literally in the dark on this one.
Speaking of which, you will be trapped IN THE DARK for a time. There’s a difference between ominously dark and pitch black and how it affects the gameplay. If I can’t see what I’m doing, I’m going to be very frustrated while I do it, and so I was while trying to figure out whether I was entering or exiting a room. Fighting an enemy in the inky black is also a pain, no matter how you do it. Fullbright is not supposed to be a standard to get through a game!!
But the absolute WORST part is the end. Going back to my horror movie example, imagine the group of kiddies were finally about to catch the masked baddie, and figure out who he/she is once and for all. They set up the trap, the baddie makes his way, and… THE END. The screen goes black and the movie is over. There’s no explanation as to whether they caught the guy or if he smited them all, it’s just over. A wall texture that says “END OF DEMO” is not a good way to END A DEMO. This is one of those games where it just would’ve been better to just end the game some time before. It’s like a run on sentence that promises a catch phrase and it’s building it up and it’s becoming more complex and there’s more to the sentence than any punctuation so you’re waiting for the end and then. Anticlimatic, isn’t it?
Ok… yes, typing that out let out my frustrations, but I didn’t hate the mod as much as other people here did. However, even if it just seems too polished to fix now, there are problems in even the most basic parts of the game that seriously need looking over: Such as why there are HL2 animations and textures in this mod, but the mod is still for HL1.
Also, painkillers make for a bad weapon. I gobbled them up at full health accidentally because I was trying to switch from pistol to knife, and THEN I came close to dying.
In fairness to Fluffy he was referring to the original version, it was a quarter the size of the current one (In MBs anyway)
So…
The mod won’t work under OpenGL at 16bits?
Thats what it says although I never tried anything but 32 bit.
Edit:Just tried setting it to 16 bit in steam and it seems to work ok.
It’d be great if someone made a “video walkthrought” for this mod; or at least a video showcasing its features 😉
When I done with the mod, ill make a walkthrought, and a website with some description about monsters, places, etc. I am looking for somebody now who can translate the documents into English. One month and the mod will be ready. 😉
can u please upload version 2 to filecloud? I’m having probs with both sites. Thanks in advance.
Done – See the download list above.
I said to myself I should give the first version a try and it was pretty good at what it tried to achieve, which is to create suspense. This mod feels almost like another game, except for a few original textures.
It was a little creepy; when I took a break, it felt like I woke up from a bad dream. It has a little atmosphere going on, with the textures, the flashes & cutscenes or whatever (except one bad light that kept flashing when I fought a zombie, now that hurt my eye..).
The music is actually helping create the atmosphere because it’s so low and we try to heighten our hearing, among other senses. Also, usually in hl the enemies make permanent noise so you know when one is around. Here, facing one that came out of nowhere with no warning is scary, especially when coming back on an already traveled route.
But other than creepiness, it’s got nothing. I’ve counted 3 or 4 zombies and few tiiiny puzzles, plenty of rooms that make no sense. Using the voice of a child’s laughter, again, no sense. Several times I woke myself in a different room wondering: What just happened? This doesn’t make any sense. And there’s no story. And has other minuses like: game crash in the first map!! and a fall that takes 60 points of health right in the beginning.
I simply don’t know how to rate this. I feel it doesn’t belong in the hl universe, the sci-fi part is missing and although there are many other mods like this, I don’t know, I liked those others better because they are funny, or weird, or smart.
So if you like this kind of.. mod, you should definitely play it. If now, do what I did and Think twice!
I’m stuck at the very beginning of the game. I just got the key and the area warped a bit. there’s a hallway full of boxes and a door that… doesn’t open. I don’t know what to do now. ><
Look for a vent cover quite high up.
That’s a tough jump.. A few other jumps like that are coming up.. it’s weird, I thought this mod was about something else and those jumps sometimes made me think I’m stuck, or that’s not the right way.
And that part with the downstairs, really confusing! There’s a note that says there’s a key to it under some plate, and I go look for it, to find out the downstairs is unlocked and I somehow got past it. And again, these walls appearing and disappearing are unexplained here, also. Am I going to the past, or to the future? Or it’s all in my head, different versions of the same hallways. Or.. who knows, or even cares?!
The second version has the same style all over again, less scary.
Some odd mapping, different points of view reveal different textures; with the walls, it’s really annoying cus it turns from dark brown into this bright purple/pink; also the health line flickers a bit. An entire map was very laggy. And what’s with that small wheel sign?
And the beginning, or maybe the middle, too, is so boring, no story, no npcs, barely a weapon, no enemies.
At least the crates are breakable now (that may be the only good thing about this version). But it takes so long for something to actually happen, that I just stopped playing.
I just don’t understand why this second version was released. Maybe I’m just stupid and mean, but at least I’m honest and have to rate it the lowest, sry.
