From the README: “Missing Information is a mod which brings the old Half-Life 2 story from prototype concepts to what you expected the game would be like when you viewed the E3 trailers. This release features the Borealis and E3 Presentation only as a public test. The Borealis is what Valve had created after Half-Life 1 was released.”
- Title: Missing Information 1.4
- File Name: hl2-sp-missing-information-v1.4.7z
- Size : 174.52MB
- Author: Missing Information Team
- Date Released: 25 July 2005
Much of this content, if not all, is considered illegal. I have refrained from posting this mod in the past because I felt it was wrong. However, I have had a change of heart because if sites like VGPro and GameSpot can make it available with no problem I don’t see why a little site like mine can’t either.
This mod features two chapters. The first, Borealis, is or seems to eb a complete set of levels on the ship. It features new weapons (Flare, fire extinguisher and an ice pick), new textures, sounds models and enemies.
The second chapter is a collection of maps used for the E3 2003 demonstration. They don’t follow a story or make any sense. The map change seems very arbitrary but you can always use the console to change maps manually if you want to. Don’t expect polished maps, many have serious problems and were never meant fro release.
I highly recommend using impulse 101 during the seafloor map because they are some very interesting weapons. I particularly liked the ones shown in images 87, 88 and 89.
I also believe that they may be other stuff that is included in the mod but can only be seen when spawned.
Chapter 1 (Borealis) consistently crashed image 31 and after 5 tries I gave up. I don’t know how much more there is. I played for approximately 20-30 minutes by then.
In my research for information for this mod I found an interesting site. It’s called e32k3 and is partly in English, the rest is in Russian. If anybody can shed some light on the author’s objective I’d be interested to learn more. Back In January 2008 he/she wrote: “In waiting of HL2:EP2 Source Code. Just waiting when it will be produced. To update E32k3 and maybe release it!” SO maybe he/she is planning to create a new mod with the maps.
I also found a reference to this mod on FPS Banana but the screenshots shown on that page don’t seem to relate to the version I played.
One last point, please don’t consider this post definitive or exhaustive. I am sure there is plenty of detail I have neglected to learn and/or present. Feel free to correct, update or just inform me and I will happily update this page to include the new information.

I certainly enjoyed playing the first chapter and was disappointed that it crashed. The second chapter was less fun and I was highly upset that the map faded to black when I was about to see the Hydra. I may go back and play that map again and see what happens.
I’m generally not to bothered by bugs and stuff, so the second maps, with dead ends etc was fine for me, although you may not enjoy it.
I don’t really have too much to say considering how many screenshots I took and how long I played.
Hi Phillip,
I have wanted for some time now to tell you how incredible I think planetphillip.com is and how much I personally appreciate your hard work on the site, but I will have to elaborate on that another time.
As for now, I really have to comment on this mod, which I downloaded from a Russian site (and have played about 5 minutes so far.) I came across the Missing Information page, here at Planet Phillip, and noticed that the version is 1.4 and it’s 250MB in size. The one I have is an updated version, 1.5, and it’s 684MB in size.
After reading the Important Notes section I realized that I just may have obtained the updated version from e32k3 that was apparently not available – “waiting for HL2: EP2 source code.”
I found it in the EP2 section of the Russian site.
I somehow followed links from The Trap 1.1 (in search of a sequel!) and ended up at the Russian site called: mods-inside.ru
FYI: There is NO English on this site! However, they have mod links separated into their respective games on the right part of the screen (eg. HL1, HL2. Portal, etc.) and when you click the mod name, again the right side of the screen provides download links – one of which is FileFront.
That is the first site on which I’ve seen Missing Information and it was rated high so I donwloaded it.
I realize you probably don’t have the time to check every mod update out, so I wanted to tell you about this in case you didn’t know.
I have been playing FPS games and their mods since before the original Doom and have spent hours searching for mods all over the Internet – so I very much appreciate sites like yours that congregate mods in one area. When I come across something I believe people will benefit from I’m not going to keep it a secret … so I wanted to let you know about this important update.
Thanks.
Steve, thanks for the “thanks”.
I was aware of 1.5 but just haven’t got around to uplaoding or updating the post. I’ll probably wait for the next update and do it then.
Don’t hesitiate to email me with maps or mods you think I am missing or need updating.
there’s also a 1.6 I’m downloading right now
I kept meaning to check the latest version. I think I’ll wait for the next one and then make a new post.
Well I can tell u that it’s really worth playing! It’s more refined, it’s got a menu background map and more chapters! And plenty of custom stuff brought properly into the mod, I couldn’t have seen the flare gun or the fire extinguisher in action otherwise. And the OICW is such a cool weapon, mouse3 switches between alt fires 😐 zoom and nade.
Minor issues: crashed in 2nd chapter after the zombies and the water map, I couldn’t trigger map end of Depot and the first chapter doesn’t go to menu after credits 😛
Some screenies.. You can see it’s more polished right from the first sequence:

this is cool I had it a few months earlier but it’s pity that in MI 1.4 there’s no air exchange maps and not all npc’s are used I think so
I played this ages ago (I think we might have discussed it on the old forum), but it continuously crashed in the same place it did for you, Phillip (screenshot 32), and I gave up. I remember enjoying what I saw of it. It’s a bit rough, but shooting the zombies with a flare gun is worth the price of admission, and it’s also interesting to speculate on what direction Valve might have taken. Putting out fires with extinguishers?

You can do that in this. There’s a room that as you enter is ok, but after a few moments it explodes and is set alight. It’s possible to run thorough with very little damage to your health but it’s also possible to put out the fire with the extinguisher.
Agreed, but it’s also fun to watch the Combine too. I tried to shot those stalker-type things but never got them.
After four different attempts at DL-ing, oh, the lost hours…. I eventually got one that worked….but, as I don’t have a “C:” drive the installer wouldn’t work….Is there any way to get hold of the post-install folder and simply paste it into Sourcemods?
The usual prompt to find the installation path failed at that particular hurdle, caused because of the death of my original hard drive and the replacement with a new one……On the second attempt I got an error message “Could not read from system device” and neither of these issues has occurred before….Pity, I had read about this release before but (obviously) not got around to trying it.
Yes, but before I upload it you should know even compressed it 400MB and it may not even work. Sometimes these mods need to be installed via .exe, so I can#t guarantee it will work.
I’ll only load it to Filefront and I’ll post here when it finished. Please be sure to tell me if it works because if it doesn’t I’ll delete it.
Okay, try this
Don’t forget to tell me if it works.
How do you not have a c drive? What do you have windows installed to? I extracted the files to see what happens and you cant pick a path to install it.At least not that I can see so I ran it anyway and it creates a valve folder in program files on the local drive(doesn’t say what the local drive is) where it stores the mod.Copy and paste it from there into the half life folder.
Sorry Philip, I haven’t had chance to test it out yet, but I will, tomorrow, and let you know.
As for why I don’t have a “C” drive, it’s because when I got the PC it did have one, and I added a second HD, “G”. After a while the original “C” drive started playing up, and I got the BSOD so many times, and restored, and eventually after all manner of calamities I was forced to abandon it. Unfortunately it contained the original Windows installation, so I lost that altogether…When I bought the next HD and a new licensed XP installation, as I couldn’t prove that the first one was legit! (Huh? It came pre-installed…how do you prove that then?) the machine wouldn’tlet the new HD register as “C” so instead it called it “F” and I can’t rename it, apparently.
It’s never been a problem before, on any installation of a new map/mod, (Or any other software in fact) but this time it did try to choose “C” as the installation path, and then hung for a bit before crashing.
400Mb, hmmm….the 250Mb of the installer took hours on ultra slow Virgin…..Might have to leave it on overnight…..
(Having said that I did just try & the FF download manager said “2 hours” so I can do that tomorrow.)
Fingers crossed….
@ andyb
How do you extract the files without using the .exe installer? I use 7-Zip mostly and have tried one or two of the RAR extractor ones too, but is it possible? How? Bear in mind I’m not all that PC savvy, just an amateur…..
I ahvent extracted it except by the installer. If you need do a search for “orca” Its a msi editor thingy that you can edit msi and other stuff with.I used it last year for another mod but forget what I did.It has lots of options and some are over my head lol.
Edit:Should be able to get it here
http://www.technipages.com/download-orca-msi-editor.html
and this site should help on instructions.By the wayorca is also a packager.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255905
Thank you both, though I need to practice a bit with Orca as when I tried to change the install path on the original DL I botched it somehow…The full folder DL worked though, even though 7-Zip reported a couple of errors in models unpacking it…It still, so far, seems to play though..
Looking good so far!
It makes sense there are bugs, it is basically unfinished stuff. Their original idea was to create HL2 in the original “darker” form, Valve had intended it to be. But the project went dead somewhere along the line. But still fun to play the E3 stuff though.
Downloaded the .rar and extracted it to the /sourcemod folder. Started Valve and there it was. No problems whatsoever. This mod is nicely done with alot of surprices. But…now I’m stuck in a room in Borealis. It’s a room with a lot of pipes crisscrossing and I had to swim underwater to get to it. Now I’m there I can’t seem to find a way out of there except the way back. Am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated.
When you’ve finished the Borealis chapter, check out the other few maps that are included, unfinished though they might be.There are also a host of new or “lost” weapons if you “impulse” them, and these can be used on any of the existing HL2 maps….or at least all of the ones I’ve tried so far…..I wonder if our resident & visiting mod-makers would be able to use these now that they’re in the public arena? I hope so!
so far I like it. but now have a bug/crash. am at d3borealis_6. the game stops and windows vista says hl2.exe has stopped working. was wanting to play through. any ideas?
thanks.
The transition between d3borealis_5 & 6 crashed time and again for me, at the moment where you meet the alternative Cubbage for the second time. If you start the map d3borealis_6 instead of going though the transition from 5 it seems to work ok, though damn those stalkers are hard to kill!
There really isn’t a lot left after that though so don’t think you’re missing too much if you try the other maps instead.
What a shame this was never polished up and completed, up until level 06 I considered this to be one of the best mods I have played for some time. We have had a few mods in the past which tried to utilize a ship environment for the story line; this for me was the first such that worked. Every thing appeared so realistic down to the each individual rivet and no matter where you were aboard it had the feel of being on a ship at sea, even when on deck a combination of the ship cutting its way through the sea, the rain and the dark horizon expressed a unique feel that sets the mod apart from so many others, just great mapping and attention to detail, not that I know anything about mapping. The author makes good use of the sets with every nock and cranny harboring some foe, or making you think that way, and at times there was a build-up of suspense just with the use of sounds and the surrounding enclosed quarters.
I did manually load level 06 and this seems a way around the crashing problem, however I have decided to stop there for the time being, just hope someone can structure an ending that the all the previous good work deserves.

I have very much enjoyed playing this and am now trying to play the borealis 6 map
But like john and GypsyJim above, it keeps crashing on me.
I am relieved that this problem seems to be with the mod, and not my machine, “cos I’ve just built it from scratch (first time).
Anyway, by starting map 6 from the console I can get into the map and it plays ok, until I get killed that is, because I’ve only got a pistol and one clip, not even the crowbar (feels wrong not having a crowbar – a bit like a comfort blanket).. And even though I started the map with the console, saved games from this session still crash.
My Question is:- is there a way to use the console to equip weapons and ammo? I don’t want to cheat, you understand, I only want what I would have had were it not for the crash at the start of map 6.
If this is the wrong place to ask this, sorry! but please point me in the right direction.
Phil
At first you think this is a really great mod, amazing models good gameplay (so far) and kinda scary. But once you get right down to it this mod is practicly a cut and paste mod.
P.S.
There is a non msi. download for this mod and with more fixes and extras.
heres the link: http://www.moddb.com/mods/missing-information
I did find ways to add ammo and heallth and suit batteries and loads of other stuff.
I found out about sv_cheats and God mode and notarget —– Oh boy, there’s loads of stuff you can do.
Anyway, I played through to the end, but it wasn’t very far. But for me it’s important to finish properly.
As for the mod, it’s very playable and I enjoyed it. It’s just a tiny bit buggy in places but not really bad, and apparently it is still a work in progress, so I say play it.
Phil
DLed and installed as a sourcemod, but crashes consistently not far into the very first map, always at the same load point.
Went to Options/Advanced tab to enable developer mode, but the Advanced panel is blank[?]
I may move all the content into the HL2 folder, and play it from HL2, see if that does any better, at least I ought to be able to load up the next map. I really want to see this stuff.
Which version? They have released a 1.5 version. I haven’t tried it yet. See comment 21 and follow the ModDB link to get the latest version. In fact, I see they have released a 1.5.1 patch. Looks like it’s worth using that.
Thanks, Phillip, gonna try that.
My plan was a long shot at best and did not work,. First map did launch but the npc who lets me thru the first door was AWOL. File structure for HL2 and this mod is too different I guess.
The files you suggested worked fine, thanks Phillip.
Funny, thought I had l already posted a thank you note here, guess I”m losing it.
It could of got caught in the spam filter.I go through the spam several times a day very carefully and have released a few more than usual in the last little while(ones I’m unsure of go into a unapproved folder till phillip looks at it) but I’m not the only one who does it so…coulda been lost/missed.
I seem to have a bit of a problem with this mod, so I was wondering if anyone could help… Everytime I’m attempting to run it, it either says that my Steam ticket has expired (so I have to re-enter my password) or that the Steam servers are too busy and that I have to try again later… No matte rwhat I do, it just won’t run…
I’ve downloaded the mod from moddb, version 1.5 and updated it to 1.5.1 with their patch…
The above-mentioned errors do not pop up when I try launching HL2 or other mods…
Did any of you encounter similar problems?
Thanks in advance…
N.
No problems here. Not sure if I ever upgraded to1.5.1 will have to download and see.
1.5.1 works fine.Sounds more like a steam issue your having. Are you running the mod from a shortcut or directly from the steam game menu
I’m running it directly from the steam game menu…
I think that I’ll try redownloading and reinstalling the mod in the near future… Maybe there was an error during the download process… Hmmm…
I reinstalled it and now it’s working strangely enough…
Sorry for the trouble…
N.
I liked this mod but I was hoping to see some airex maps and proto citadel maps but its still cool
Bugged to the death, nearly impossible to finish without cheats…
But the pleasure to go through the “original” Borealis, fighting “super”-Stalkers, and most of all, using ALL of the original weapons, such as the physgun, the hopwire, wow…!!!
That’s short and fun. The “second” map at the E3 is totally un-playable, in fact…
Version 1.6 available since April 2011. I’m downloading it now.
Missing Info is just a mod any gamer into HL2 modding should try!!, noew the current verssion is the 1.6, and it fixed the crash in the Borealis, and actually ends with a couple of unique maps.
I love people who is trying to re-build the lost universe from HL2 Beta and so…, but I understand must be a quite superb hard ass job, so this mods maybe many times are just too ambitious or they request tons of time and dedication of his developers., so I don’t really know if MI team is working in update verssions, I haven’t seen anything going on that direction, anyway I hope they soon deliver something surprising again, I definitely must play it.

Just played v1.6, and I found it overall quite tedious due to the cramped nature of the boat. Skeletons with lasers were fun for about 5 seconds. There is no plot to speak of, and the base that we’re supposed to rescue never enters the action, except via mention. My frame rate dropped through the floor with the fire-laden scenes and generally wasn’t good. Maybe it’s a hint that I should upgrade. Playing on 1920×1080 on 16:9.

All in all, quite disappointing, especially considering its uncompressed size of 1.3 GB (Version 1.6).
There are five short chapters, which have to be started separately. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 are E3 presentation material with an annoying three lines of red text permanently displayed, to remind you that this material has to be played in a special way in order to avoid breaking the scripting. Chapter 1 takes place on the “Borrealis”, Chapter 5 on some rooftops, so ultimately you’re downloading this for the Borrealis stuff.
Playing this on a current HL2/EP1/EP2/SDK2007 installation, you’ll also encounter some missing models and textures.
Historically interesting for some Chapter 1 weapons that cannot be found in the final game (like the fire extinguisher or the flare gun), but that’s it.

Missing Information is a mod that holds a special place in my heart. I can remember being younger, discovering MI, and learning about all these unique aspects of HL2 before its release. Ever since, I’ve become slightly obsessed with HL2 Beta related content, and I have MI to thank/blame for that.
This isn’t really a regular review for me, just more to honor and appreciate what I consider a very important part of HL2 modding history. Without Missing Information, the Beta would gather nowhere near the same level of interest it has today, and we wouldn’t have great Beta recreation mods like Dark Interval and RTBR. It made aspects like the Borealis, the Hydra, the Cremator, etc. much more a part of the fandom than they otherwise would have. All these things happened because of this mod.
Every HL fan deserves to play it at least once, just to see what was and could have been, and what led to the fantastic game that HL2 became.
