This is a typical new mappers release. It shows promise but the author doesn’t seem to really understand what is required to make a polished mod.

The concept is too vague and the transitions between each area are incredibly haphazard. Just look at screenshot 28 to see the Ravenholm wood panelling next to the Combine metal.

The Use of the vehicles is ill-thought out and the end is broken.

For me this demonstrates the need for a “Buddy” system of mappers. I have little doubt that if somebody took the time to explain and tutor this mapper in the non-technical aspects of level design he would improve no end.

This is a clear case of technical ability (I’m not saying he is an expert – but he can build levels) without know why some things work and some don’t.

He would do well to look at the highly rated SP mods and try to fashion his own version of them.

It’s not much fun to play but it would pass a rainy 40 minutes or so.

    1. Hello, thanks for the full review, this was my first mod and i was very excited when i made this back then, hopefully if i ever make a new mod it will be better and longer then this one, since i have learned much more since then.

Glad people at least enjoyed it to some extent.

Thanks for the review, and uploading the mod. (if that was you)

  2. Phillip – the link to this page on the image (from the main page) is broken.

  3. Play It Later

Let down by the ending but not bad, not great, but not bad!

Gameplay is not hard and looks are OK, it would be very easy to be critical of things like transitions and the use of the buggy where it would have been just as easy to walk it, but it was fun while it lasted.

I don’t think in reality, if played in one go, this is more 20 minutes worth, but if you have other things to do it’s a mod to start, pause, go and do something, unpause, play, pause, go and do something Etc.

    1. Thanks for the comment, im glad the mod wasn’t too bad, as it was my first back then.
(whoops, i think it made duplicates, sorry)

  4. Maybe?

Not awesome, but some well laid out levels and passages. Not very complex combat.
The most annoying thing for me was that the crosshair was all but invisible, ruining the gameplay a bit for me.

I’ve seen many worse maps from first time mappers. Its worth playing, but no rush, hence the rating.

    1. Hi, creator of this map here, thanks for the comment.

To be a rokie modder first releas work is perfect, I mean we can’t judge the new modders even mappers so hard, I know there’s a limit, but when they make at least logical coherent layouts like this with no big loud just make them with sense, that’s perfect for a first mod, and here I got that feeling.

Maybe at the end things didn’t work out well but in a manner first works like this are just exactly for that, to learn about what’s wrong and what can do it better next time, I know there are few details in here like the textures were not allways in a propper order or “style” like that wooden hallway in the middle of a CMB style missile launcher almost at the end (at the 28th screenshot to be precise) is a good example of what I mean by propper order of the textures, and maybe too few combat is another bad point in here.

But despite those little normal first details, I like as a gamer to encourage new modders because who knows, maybe they could give us a really good jewl in the future, so keep on working kid!, i’d love to play more of ur work i’ll be glad to play it.

    1. Hi, old time creator of this map! Thank you for the nice reply, i understand this is pretty old and it wasn’t good back then, i think i have improved since then.

  7. Avoid It!

If this guy is a new modder, then kudos and not bad.

As a player I must give my fair but just review…and it’s not good. I would first say to any modder, dont give us a vehicle section if we are only to drive two city blocks. It is better that we have no vehicle at all, than a terribly short drive.

The cooridoors here were bland for the most, and there is a door every 10 feet. I felt like I was in the hall of doors or something. That felt rookie, and other parts of the maps construction didnt make much sense either. It looked like different areas were strung together, just to make a map. It certainly was not polished mapping.

I liked the modders music which was original, and I liked his improvised weapon sounds, and dark blue HUD (although I couldnt really see it very well).

At one point I got stuck after a map load and couldnt get un-stuck. That was a perfect time to segway out of the game! Look, the mapper has potential if this was his first strike. But the map itself has no potential. Avoid.

  8. Maybe?

its worth a play but for almost 100mb download there isn’t much here. I don’t like to criticize especially if it is a new modder but alot didn’t go together. I was very frustrated in the area just prior to short buggy ride section
In the split hallway section there are 2 batteries laying around, unless I missed something did these serve any purpose, I never found one and thats a huge NO NO if they were just thrown in there for no apparent reason
A Map/Mod should never end like that 🙁

  9. Maybe?

I am quite surprised this is Ethosaur’s mod, the creator of PTSD and Necrophobia. I left those a really positive review but this is very different. It took me awhile to realize what went wrong. It’s basically one of his old maps so at that time, this is pretty bad, not some PTSD quality mod. What went wrong in this mod is the HUD, I can barely see it with dark blue color. There is no crosshair, making combat very difficult. The amount of bullets per clip is insane like 34 bullets in one handgun clip? The transition between map 2 and 3 are broken to the point that I got stuck leaving me no choice but to noclip. Some maps are blocky, some are broken, and the ending. I had no idea what to do because it got me to the cutscene where it flashed white for a brief moment and I can’t move anymore. The camera doesn’t move as well so I quitted the game afterwards.

Conclusion, this is likely Ethosaur’s first mod but still forgivable in a way because of how great he has improved in his later maps. Go check out PTSD or Necrophobia
