Made for a Russian forum mapping competition, this map puts you back in Black Mesa.
You need to find your way to the army truck that can be driven to safety.
Of course, plenty of enemies and obstacles stand (and run) in your way.
Only the strong will survive. Good Luck!

First minute of the game, and I’m already dead. That wasn’t a good start. From what I understand, this is a remake of the Lambda Core chapter from the original Half-Life, where you have to flood the core. The mapping is quite good, and detailed. There’s performance problems in large rooms, but it’s okay. I didn’t like the monster and weapon placement. It was pretty random. It’s hard to kill so many alien grunts with a shotgun, and pistol. There’s the egon gun in the water, but it doesn’t help much. Conclusion, it’s a short, nice map.
Yeah, pretty much a remake of the lambda pump area from the original Half Life. There’s only one pump this time around so it’s a lot shorter.
I think architecture is alright here, not as good as in the original, but close enough to seem like that intended setting. What I like is that the monster placement matches that of the original too. If you didn’t remember, in Half life, the lambda core pump area was filled with slaves and alien grunts (among other things, heh). You get to see that in this map too, although you have alot less in terms of armaments. I challenge you guys to do what I did: that is, I never touched the gluon gun (it wasn’t very well hidden to be honest). I was playing on medium, by the way.
There was the pump room door which annoyed me a bit because the door was being glitched by agrunts firing hornets. The door sliding sound accumulated and it was really loud and annoying. However I won’t hold this against the author because it was an engine problem and original Half life had it too at one point. I would recommend you play this short map, since it nostalgically reminds us of the lambda pump area in the original Half life. Very appropriate for the currently ongoing event.
Nice and solid map with some fairly big and good architecture work. It can be quite difficult but you stock up on some ammo towards the middle together with the Gluon Gun which makes short work of the aliens.
There’s a group of assassins in one of the rooms and they can be proved to be difficult depending on how you approach them. However, this room serves no purpose so fighting them is purely optional. I also found their appearance vastly random and it seems like the author just put them there without any purpose.
Enjoyable map with good level design and combat but falls short on its length and for providing no real surprise.
Looks and feels like Black Mesa for sure, but without _any_ storyline (“go to truck isnt enough for me”) there was something missing.
Didnt even remember to use gluon at the first time, why in the earth it was in that pool.
“This our new weapon is so secret and dangerous that we have to hide it well.”
“Remember that coolant water pool, thats a good place for it”
“Yeah, that should work”
After hiding that weapon there.
“Anyone knows if that Gluon is waterproof?”
“Oh darn!”
This map would work as a part of longer mod for sure.
The authors mapping skills seem to far out stretch his ability to confer a story or to balance the gameplay. This Lambda Station appear more like an exercise in architecture, which I appreciated more then the action content, I liked the proportions and prospective of the opening set, with it’s structural lines focusing towards the encounters ahead.
The author appears not to bother with the small scale, all the sets are wide and grand, such that you could drive a bus through the whole game. One of the problems with such a scale is the impression of emptiness, and if you don’t put them to good use it appears over the top.
The game, such that it is, does not flow too well, leaving you to question what the point of that sequence and/or set was. The combat can be on the challenging side requiring most of the ammo on offer, other then that, there’s not much to comment on has the game is short and finishes abruptly, leading one to think that this was originally intended has part one of something bigger, which it may still be.
Difficult to decide between a Play It Later and a Maybe for this one, but seeing how I just slated The Haunted Lab, I had best ease off a bit.
If you look at the info up there you’ll notice this was made for the Fast Level Design Competition.
As such, I have serious doubts that the author intended for it to be part of a larger project, or that s/he spent a particularly long time working on the gameplay, which shows. However, the architecture is, as others noted, quite nice – maybe more than it has been given credit for so far. The scale is larger than usual, the angles and curves in the architecture are subtle but very well done – and there are some nice little details sprinkled throughout the map.
the gameplay is too difficult, but the ample health makes things quite reasonable if you are able to manage your resources half decently. Besides the pistol, shotgun and gluon gun, there is a machine gun available, along with the many aforementioned health packs. The area with assassins is, with the gluon gun, a total breeze, and allows access to a health charger station as well.
Like seemingly every other one of these classy, short BM maps, the ending is abrupt, which is too bad, but was to be expected, really.
Overall I’d give this a play it later.
That’s how I linked to it in the Source are of basic details.
Oh yeah I know, I was just noting that because I think it explains quite a few aspects of the map (eg somewhat random gameplay, lack of story, abrupt ending etc).
This is a cool coherent map, well distributed in my opinion to be just one map with the classic goal of getta hell outta BM I like this so I put this a play it NOW.
Short, nonetheless fun. The grunts were pretty annoying, they’re not much fun to fight in my opinion. Mapping was classic Black Mesa, nothing special. Plenty of health around, didn’t have much trouble at all. The group of assassins was completely pointless, didn’t like that too much. That and the excess of grunts are my only gripes.
This is an interesting map. I think the mapping itself is solid. Nice layout, nice architecture, decent lighting. But I think the flow and gameplay are pretty flawed. Now, as part of a fast mapping competition that is understandable, but at the end of the day all we can judge it by is what we see and play.
Combat was pretty tough for me. I didn’t get the gluon gun until after I had cleared out the area near the truck (not knowing that the truck was my goal). So things would have been easier had I known it was in the pool from the start. I did like the fight around the truck, it was tricky given the weapons I had (glock with low ammo and shotgun).
It’s nice enough to look at (very reminiscent of Lambda Core, obviously) but very uneven in gameplay and some oddly placed enemies.
Your mission here is to flood the core, open a security gate and get the hell outa here via a truck back in good ol” Black Mesa!
I don’t think it was too hard with the alien grunts as there is plenty of ammo and the Egon gun.
The enemy placement was maybe a little hidden but therefore it’s easy to kill all, even the assassins and of course the alien grunts..
Pro’s:
-Solid level design, detailed and not random
-Good combat sequences
-Good balancing
-Black Mesa feeling
Con’s:
-Unfortunately short
-Enemy placement
-First explosion
-Barney and enemy AI
-No puzzles
Lambda Station for Half-Life
I don’t know why, but I loved this map!
The combat was variable, though it’s really easy because at some point you get the Egon gun, not to mention the automatically easy difficulty level.
The environment is Black Mesa and we all love it.
Overall, I don’t have much more to say about this map.
PLAY IT NOW!
Nice and solid remake, had some difficult moments but that made it fun to play.
