You play a Russian scientist, Ravil Unisovich, who unwittingly unleashes a plague of monsters after an unsuccessful experiment.
Sound familiar?
In this, the first of 4 mods, you simply need to escape the research facility, where you started everything.

I think you play as a scientist by the looks of the pictures
Got the old “could not open opfor.wad” error message in this & the sequel. Searched for another copy in the whole Valve directory without any luck….is this a Steam issue or a HL1 version issue, anyone know? Please…?
Ok, but when you initially dl Steam your original HL gets moved over…to Steam. Should HL exist in both Steam & non-Steam versions, on an already overcrowded C drive…?
Pity if theres not a way to patch up mods like this to fit the predominant version of HL…
On a side issue, what a top-site you run here sir, all praise!
james
The opfor.wad is the wad (texture pack) for Opposing Force. If it’s not included in the Ispitatel zip file (I haven’t looked) then you will need a copy of Opposing Force. Look in the folder and you will find the opfor.wad – copy it to the Ispitatel folder and it should work. I’ll try it out in a bit and let you know – am supposed to be working!
Ispitatel 1 is a preview release of: Krypton ? Hmmm … After Dark Force/Escape From The Darkness its here again … :o(
i got the same warning for both ispitaltel 1 and 2. does anyone have a link to the ipfor.wad file?
i hate to reinstall the game for just this file.
The link is in the download instuctions above…in the text in “Blue’…
i installed opposing force and copyed the file. it worked fine in both 1 and 2.
phillip, I can offer a copy of the wad file to those who need it to play this mod, or should I just send it to you. or not due to copyrights?
your wish is my command.
I don’t know if copyrights would apply since its on the HL disc to start with and alot of mods pack it into thier installs.
has anyone gotten to the end with the g-man. I dont know how to choose. tnx.
A short but very intense combat mod, play on difficult with the sound up loud for a great adrenaline rush! There’s more aliens/grunts/apaches etc in some fights than in total in some mods! There’s a great big cannon with a lovely action near the end, I kept reloading that particular map and playing it different ways. Oh such jolly fun! Definitely worth the download. 3.5/5
Russian dialogue with English text prompts. No puzzles, no bugs.
This is early work from the Twenty-One studio, referred to in this mod as XXI. I think the guys are Russian and have since produced Ispitatel 2 and 3, and more recently the very humerous, strangely different and original Ispitatel4_classic_English
Instructions and ‘solution” are in Russian. You don’t need the solution but here’s the instructions;
Requires Opposing Force to be installed (as well as HL) and the OPFOR.WAD file to copied from Sierra/Half-Life/gearbox to Sierra/Half-Life/valve.
Unzip the game to somewhere temp, copy the resulting folder to Sierra/Half-Life as usual. (No I don’t speak Russian)
Have noticed quit a few mods in German, French, etc. Some are well worth the dl and time to play. I’m one that likes a plot or story line to follow. I found a free language translater on the web that may help anyone with these mods. Just copy/paste into the approp.box, select which language, and vwalla. Unfortunatlly, the in-game text, unless it’s in a file in the main folder won’t be trans’d. It also has a space to translate web pages. Link as taken from site, http://www.rock3.co.uk/translate.shtml. Also if your using the Google Tool Bar in your browser it has a link on the Settings tab to add to TB that translates web pages. Hope this info. helps anyone.
finished it, not too bad off to part 2
Ok, no problems, nothing new. Fairly basic stuff.
I liked it. Very difficult but fun.
You play as Teacher of Physik
I had real fun with this little mod. The start is crazy and it goes against the general idea of fighting, basically you just have to run like hell and stay alive.
Don’t worry about the voice acting being in Russian as you get basic instructions in English on the bottom left of the screen.
Follow the instructions and everything should be ok.
There are some interesting situations and the fight as you get to the surface should be replayed a few times as there are multiple ways to win.
Pay special attention to what is in the office – it can make you life a lot easier.
I managed to beat the mod in Easy mode without dying too many times, but I suspect in HARD it would be a serious challenge.
This was a fun 20 minutes and I am looking for to number 2 tomorrow.
Wait, what’s in the office?
Ispi 1 is the coolest of the saga, apparently something went wrong in the 3rd development and everything was screwed up, I remember I played this not quite long ago and its fun, with no need of cheats or bad head aches so play it now the design and mapping is clever and just in the right place with some cool battles, if u don’t like damn snarks, then think twice!!!, but anyway is a cool little mod to play!
Shame that on an otherwise good looking map pack it’s plagued with some really bad gameplay and design choices. In short, I really didn’t enjoy this, at all.
Basically everything is in Russian so you have absolutely no idea what’s happening concerning the story. However, you do get a few gameplay hints, in English thankfully, that’ll help you throughout — think of them like objectives, like running into a locked door and you’ll get a small text snippet that’ll order you to find a security card. It’s subtle but it works.
The really bad aspect about this pack, however, is the gameplay. You start off in a facility that looks all too much like the Black Mesa facility with a pair of scientist rambling in Russian. After a failed experiment hell brakes loose and a gigantic ever-ending swarm of snarks pour out of teleporters killing every scientist within a few seconds. To make matters worse the military breaks through the roof rappelling down killing everything that moves. Funnily, this happens all through the first few minutes of the pack so basically you have to navigate, weaponless even, through hordes of these forces up to a weapon locker room and try to escape. It’s insane and ridiculous but never fun as it requires you to continuously load until you successfully find a way out of the research lab.
Amazingly it never improves as it progress; you still fight hordes of almost impossible odds with enemies so poorly placed that you think the author just wants to see you horribly fail and laugh about it.
No, I didn’t enjoy this. It’s sad since the level design is actually quite good both indoors and outside. It’s such a shame that the gameplay is absolutely horrendous.
Since I am from Russia, and voice very well the story, I’ll tell it to you. It is worth noting that the voice is very good. However, there are English subtitles, but there are only told about the main events.
Ravil Yunisovich: Research scientist at the Laboratory of Parallel Worlds at age 32. Director of the laboratory complex hints at the bad reputation of the scientist in the lab and threatens him with dismissal. To remedy the situation, he shall Ravil to test for opening portals into a parallel universe, but the test fails, and from the opened portals to teleport earth hundreds of alien organisms.
Fleeing, Ravil gets in the car and drives away from the complex. But as soon as he leaves the complex, the aliens are catching up with him and take away traffic. Before Ravil the portal goes “Administrator” and invites further collaboration. Once Ravil agrees it erase the memory and make a two year physics teacher in high school.
Start good. In the office we listen to, as the two scientists are telling us that we are an important experiment, which will decide our fate. Moreover, this new dialogue, which inspires hope for a good game. But then, instead of a good game we are waiting for something completely incomprehensible. During the experiment, from the opened portals are beginning to cut hundreds of bugs. Then on top of the ropes down the soldiers. At the beginning, we were told that the soldiers will protect us, but in fact the soldiers shot at not only the bug, but by us. Apparently the authors conceived of this as an of joke, but i’m not funny. Getting out of the hall of experiments can only be turned on concole command “god”. And this is the beginning greatly disappointing because of what all further perceived as a idiocy.
Toward the end of the field will be opened in which dozens of portals and we tumble down again all the same bugs.
Despite the fact that is the nice storyline, good scripts, but on the other hand overestimated the difficulty, rather weak level of mapping, so I can not recommend this modification for the game. This creation is only for fans of a strange humor.
Yeah I pretty much agree with Loke’s assessment above. I didn’t really have much fun in this pack at all, especially the snarks. The opening is memorable and hectic but not really fun at all. And it’s an interesting choice to give you the gluon gun near the beginning.
I wasn’t bothered by the Russian voices – I don’t speak it, I live with that. Thankfully there is some English on-screen text that guides you. I don’t think I missed much, and above Kodak was kind enough to supply some info.
The mapping is pretty decent, although kind of blocky and not too detailed. I didn’t understand the pool area or why it had dozens of teleporter balls sitting above it. The penultimate battle (screenshot 15, the 3-way with tons of aliens and marines) is also hectic and more fun than the opening. You’ve got some choices in how you approach it but I found the mounted rocket launcher the easiest. Unfortunately the mapper didn’t know how to use Apaches properly so they just spin in place harmlessly.
The gameplay is not really challenging, again because you are given so much heavy weaponry in the first half of the pack (gluon + tau + 5 satchels). Even the gargantua which has some nice scripting is a pushover with 5 satchels. The penultimate battle is over pretty quick and the finale battle (really just snark avoidance) is just annoying.
I didn’t find much to like about this pack at all.
Lewis Carrol would have loved this, more snark’s to hunt than you can shake a stick at! (unless of course one was a boojum).

Another one that seemed as though it was going to be a good play but the snarks at the beginning and end really got on my ***’s. As I’ve said so many times I’m not a mapper or modder, so I can’t comment on technical issues, I can only say in parts this was fun, but in others a chore. I liked the mounted cannon as it seemed to fire contact grenades (at a high rate of fire).
There were some nice ideas in this but to me it seems the author was too clever for his own good and couldn’t make best use of his ideas, which is a shame as this could have been good. Hopefully he will have learnt more in the follow up.
This was a pretty entertaining mod. The combat was mostly unconventional, which I think made it stand out a bit more in my mind.
The most memorable section was definitely the start of the action. I was completely caught off guard by it and I just stood there looking stupid, scratching my head, before promptly dying. Once I worked out that running was the best option the mod became much easier.
I thought the indoor areas looked quite nice, though I did have a few problems with the ramps not being smooth enough to walk over without having to jump. Unfortunately the outside areas left a lot to be desired. They were generally pretty bland, open spaces with no border to the skybox so they didn’t feel quite completed.
I was disappointed that everything was in Russian because I feel that I was missing out on important information but that is no fault of the author or mod. It’s still quite playable, even if you don’t understand what’s going on. I think it would have been nice to have subtitles for the spoken sections and maybe multi-lingual signs for slightly easier navigation.
I think this mod was pretty good but it could have been much better if the final areas had more structured combat and the environments were more detailed.
As it is, it’s not too bad. If you absolutely hate snarks then avoid it but even I enjoyed it and I’m not a snark fan.
Scientist Ravil Unisovich works in the Ural secret lab LIMP-11. Today is a big day – the scientists are going to open a portal to another world. Ravil’s rating is very low, so his only hope to keep the job is to take something valuable from today’s experiment…
Since the hands which hold weapons are in a labcoat and Ravil is shown wearing the bulletproof vest in a cutscene, I think the authors should have removed the sound “Welcome to HEV” and retexture the charger.
Unique point of this mod are encounters with overwhelming numbers of snarks, leeches and soldiers. It is very cool and fun. The crowds of snarks are not very dangerous when you have the Alien Grunt’s Hand.
The architecture is beautiful and original, but bland in some areas. First level has a nice layout with good use of third dimension.
The new dialogues should have either been done in English or had English subtitles. Same is for the signs.
If you say no to Gman the Alien Slaves just stand there and do nothing. But there’s a gun lying near the car! I expected an option to fight them off and then see an alternative ending. It’s bad that the authors didn’t do it.
This mod is fun and worth playing.
Wasn’t “full attack” all the time, had these “run, hide, hit, hide” moments. I did like those. And then “hide, let aliens and grunts fight and then hit”.. Extra points for those.
But there really wasnt that much else. Boring mapping, not any cool surprises and not any real fresh puzzles either.
im still giving out 4*’s, just because it had those moments mentioned in the beginning. English subs would help too..
Wow, this was just epic…
This mod requires you to keep constantly running from enemies and when you do have to fight it’s usually a massive fight with tons of action. It’s difficulty was perfect for me and it’s gameplay was even better. This mod is for the kind of people that just like shooting things in huge waves. The snark fight near the end was brilliant. Basically this mod is about running and then huge fights.
It’s difficult to explain this mod. Just play it for yourself and you’ll see for yourself.
Hmm.
Sorry folx, I don’t get the sense out of this. The start was very nice and it took some times to figure out what to do exactly. After an easy part you come again outside and hell breaks loose! (And I don’t mean the snarks, that was easy too!)
However, to me fun is something else than presented here.
I don’t like fighting or watching a fight of an superiority “…a battle you have no chance of winning”
So to me it was just strange and weird and I can’t recommend it for playing…
Pro’s:
-Some neat map design & layout – plus outdoor areas
-Ehm..action everywhere (which forces you to hide first or cheat)
-Some cool scripts
Con’s:
-Balancing, very tough
-Very short
-Heavy performance issues
-Silly story afaik
-No puzzles
DAMN IS THIS A HARD ASS MOD!!! (and a very good one)
The mod starts in a facility, where you have to press a few buttons. Beep, boop, and done. Though later, the MOD KICKS YOU IN THE ****ING ASS!!! There are soldiers, and snarks (especially NEVER ENDING snarks) and you have to go to the armory. Then starts what I can say one of the hardest Hλlf-Life mods EVER MADE. This is Russian, like Ispitatel 2 (which I played first) but meh, who cares about the story when YOU”RE ABOUT TO EXPERIENCE SUFFER AND PAIN!!
When I beat this mod, it was one of the most satisfying experiences I’ve ever lived. The fight near the end was one of the hardest moments I’ve ever experienced IN ANY GAME.
Overall, download this mod. Hardcore players only.
A decent, but completely average, quite short and graphically dated mod.
I found this neither particularly hard nor entertaining.
The opening is hectic but not really fun, there are no puzzles, the fights are straightforward, and atmosphere and immersion suffer from the language, if you don’t speak a word Russian, as I do.
There are many worse mods, but just as many better ones.
