As much as I enjoyed playing this mod, I felt that there were definitely issues.
The first is one of “visual flow”. Very few of the rooms or areas felt properly connected. Some corridors were hi-tech and other almost mediaeval.
Another issue I had was one of too many enemies group together, this made killing them generally too easy.
Lastly, was not know which door had been opened when I found/used keycards. I spent too long back-tracking just in case.
The author has made other mods and I hope to play and post them soon.
All in all, a fun little mod that rarely does anything exceptional. The final room looked great but I found it too easy and if I find it easy, then you will find it too easy.

I can’t say I really liked this mod. It has the beginnings of a good time, but at the same time it very much feels like the author tried to pack everything from Half-Life into this set of 5 maps. Nearly every single corner you turn, you can expect an enemy to be sitting waiting for you. In a lot of cases, the map is just overcrowded with Xen aliens. I’m sure in one small crate room there were 6 alien controllers, and several hallways were literally packed with slaves or houndeyes. It just doesn’t give the AI any chance to shine when you place enemies like that.
I am not sure if this is supposed to take place in Black Mesa. Much of the maps are corridors and small rooms and everything except a couple of areas feels cramped. It certainly doesn’t have the Black Mesa feel.
Your goal doesn’t really seem to be infiltration, since after a few minutes you’re armed to the gills including the Magnum, tau cannon, and RPG. The gameplay as presented is a frustrating series of find-the-button or -keycard and then find-the-door that opened (some are thankfully obvious). Combine that with some really odd texture choices and the balance of the map pack is frustrating. Particularly, the door textures were odd and varied, and in several cases something was a door when it didn’t look it, and vice versa. This could have used a pass to touch up problems like this.
As it stands, yes it’s more Half-Life but it’s not really a quality pack if you’re looking for something to play.

I downloaded and followed the instructions as normal, but even though the file folder is properly in my half life folder, it doesn’t show up after repeated tries to install. It’s right next to INVASION, in my folder – and should logically show up in my steam list right next to it, yes? The folder contents are all in another language but may indicate I need to move files? There’s only a maps folder and a graphs within it, and 5 maps? Should there not be more to this in the 7z?
** edit**
Should the instructions instead say to move the maps and graphs into their respective folders? The instructions seem to indicate this is an ‘open half life 1 and hit console with map function’.
Yes, this isn’t ready to go as a mod (it’s missing a liblist.gam file). So you can copy the contents into the valve_addon folder (so that the maps go into the maps folder, etc.). And then load om0 from the console.
Well I managed to get the files in the right places, after a bit of a false start.
The visuals are okay, not very coherent and only faintly Half Life-ish in a few places. Mostly it seemed like it could have been a spaceship or anything other than a large research-oriented facility. I did like the one room with the wood paneling and paintings, though it was reached by unmarked doors down a completely unrelated corridor. Weird design, not very well thought out.
Also, a LOT of the doors or triggers seemed to be broken for me. I could hear plenty of enemies on the other sides of walls but there were only 2 key cards I ever found, and a couple places where it seemed doors should open upon finishing whatever fighting there was, just *didn’t* open. I had to noclip at least twice to get through (one where the wide wooden door is, and again I want to say in that dark ‘storage room’ under the floor where you see it in the hall floor), because just… *nothing* worked to move through it.
The combat I thought was pretty good, though it did have a bit of ‘death as a learning curve’ at times. The variety of weaponry is… confusing, at best. We GET the crowbar, but… it’s long after any obvious use? I didn’t use it even after I found it.
I was never sure whether I was supposed to try and use the security guard to get me past things, not one of the scientists would come with me, not even the guy stranded in the weird stairwell. You’d think he would want to get the hell out of there!
All in all though, it’s not a *terrible* mod by any stretch, certainly better than some purely by virtue of having some sort of progress through an area, rather than just endless waves of fighting. Also, it was not completely dark the whole time, which I always find as a bonus. Can’t stand how dark things get on my monitors.
Play it, but don’t expect much from it.

OH MY!! An Eastern Europe (Polish) Mod!! Hope it’s good and not break my head too much as some eastern Europe mods are really not cool…
I thought this was a decent little mod. Not great but decent. The points noted above about enemies being too close together are true. It’s also confusing why there are so many scientists and Barneys everywhere. They don’t really help you much, leading them around is really difficult, and you can definitely survive without them. Since it is a non-english mod I had trouble with the key cards and what I was supposed to do but eventually figured it out. It’s worth playing when you have some free time.

The installation of this mod is a mess!! manually it doesn’t appear on library tab, and via map tap it says the maps don’t appear on server.
Also installing the maps right on folder says fatal error could not open sof.wad
I have corrected the Manual Installation instructions. Could you explain your message: ” the maps don’t appear on server.”? Perhaps send me a screenshot.
Thanks Phillip, I follow the install directions you corrected and it works now OK. The only issue was that I placed the “sof.wad” file just in a wrong place.
Incredibly frustrating, especially in 01a, as Phillip showed in the video. I thought it was the MapTap version as all the bsp showed up separately, so I downloaded the manual version and played on HL hard drive version. Same problems. And as already pointed out, there are strange sizing problems. Why didn’t I rate it worse? There was a lot of playing time and some of it was satisfying.

This is a quick comment and rec image and meta review data test
Ok so… Now that I’ve played this one, I’d say the whole mappack was just a low to average quality modding piece.
I think some textures specially the door ones are completely out of place and they look terrible. Also some doors are way too big and definitely feel out of normal mapping proportions. And if you count those flaws we have like a roller coaster in mapping terms; I mean, some areas are really nice and feel like they have cool quality, but some others are very poorly done, they have those weird textures that just don’t fit with HL and I also experienced some stuttering problems specially at the beginning.
Now the weapon and health supplies were ok, but the introduction to the crowbar is way too later, and I think I just miss my old trustable crowbar with me in more than the half of the mod, so I didn’t like that at all.
Also another thing that I really missed in this mod was fighting against Marine grunts. those Xenian battles were ok but suddenly became way too repetitive, predictable and finally quite boring as even in hard skill they are easy as pie!!! also those Controllers were placed in narrow places and at ground level!! please don’t do that!!!! that just look horrible as the Controller is an enemy perfect for open areas or big indoor spaces, here they just looked stacked in there just because the modder wanted to place them like that.
Here we also have another annoying thing that I like to call: “the backtracking as pain in the arse syndrome”, I mean, very bad usage of backtracking with no clear directions of what to do or where to go, the modder trust way too much in the player intuition and that’s just bad because players can get confused easily, and the lack of subtitles in English make the things even worse.
So I guess in conclusion this is a mappack OK to play latter. It certainly entertains you for some 25 minutes, but definitely can get repetitive and predictable. So be warn. Also if you love kill many xenians this one is for you.

My feelings about this mod are very mixed. Sometimes it can be very smart, but other times it’s just frustrating and annoying.
I didn’t choose a Maybe recommendation because the mapping is actually really enjoyable, but it can be very annoying sometimes to the point where it’s not enjoyable at all, especially the part with the keycards.
The combat was good, but it was too easy. There was way too much ammo, despite the fact that there were a lot of enemies.
Overall, I think you should play this mod. Despite its annoying issues, this mappack is a really nice one.
Too many enemies, but also, too much ammo. No problem, it’s ballanced anyway. Still you need to take a nice caution in the first level. I like the designing of a turret killing all the houndeye around. That turret is quite strong, 4 Revolver shots to destroy, what a record. He could do the same in other rooms. At least when aliens are turned away is a simulation they are worried with other things.
