“Hypnagogia is a common fleeting perceptual experience that occurs during the transition from wakefulness to sleep and from sleep to wakefulness, with varying degrees of emotionality” Waters et al., 2016).
This map is wild from start to finish. I gave it a play it now and here’s why.
Usage of space and world brushes: 7/10
I gave it a 70% because most of the world was very unique and I didn’t get lost while exploring the rooms, and there is a lot of them. I believe I found all the rooms, but I may have missed some. Every room leads back to the story at some point. What I found while exploring this map is that there is a lot of extra content that was added at some point in development that added to the story of Gordon Freeman in stasis… or what I believe to be stasis since that’s the definition of Hypnagogia.
Visuals 7/10
There is a lot to take in, and it’s all very abstract. I love playing abstract maps because there is so much content out there that has not been fully explored and this is a great example of one of them. As for what I saw, it’s all very basic and is just kinda a mess of rooms and doorways.
Gameplay: 7/10
There is a strong mix of all combine ground units. Metropolice, Elites, and Shotgunners. I only died a handful of times, but that’s mainly because I wanted to explore the edges of the map. I wasn’t sure if there was more beyond it.
Final Score: 24/30 – 70%
Final Comments: Play it now. It’s a lot to take it, but none of it is all that difficult to understand. It’s like going to an art museum.

For some reason, the frame drop in some scenes is particularly severe, plz check

I never got that. How severely?
I played all of shadgrimvy’s maps a long time ago and this manages to capture the style quite well, while still being good enough by itself.
My main criticisms are with the amount of enemies in wide open spaces- I got riddled with bullet holes and left on low health pretty quickly a couple of times- and the fact I managed to break the ‘traffic light’ puzzle and had to continue without the car, which was a pain.
Also, I appreciate the section based off the start of Condemned’s metro level 😛

What an awesome map! I love abstract experiences and parts of this was a borderline fever dream, well done!
