Something has gone wrong in Black Mesa. No surprise there and you need to find a way out. Again no surprise.
However, this time it’s not all run and gun – at least not at the beginning.
Take your time and explore carefully. You may need to use your wits before you can find a weapon.
Good Luck!

As you probably know, Black Mesa mods are my favourite and being able to explore new or different areas of the facility are what makes them special. This mod allows me to do that but never really wowed me.
By that I mean, I never really entered any areas and said “WOW”. There are some really nicely built and designed sections, joined by some standard corridors. Nothing amazing, but still very good.
The mod starts with a terrible script and voice acting, but that can be forgiven. You may get a little nervous, as I did, because it’s actually a long time until you get a weapon and you will probably wonder if you missed one – you haven’t. There are some nice “Puzzles” and the implementation of the key code is nicely done.
Eventually, you get to shot shit and that’s fun too. I had a serious issue with one puzzle that required one side of a double door to be open but the doors always seemed locked – you will probably see where I mean. I also had a near “Rage Quit” autosave that was just F*%king stupid. NEVER PUT AN AUTOSAVE IN THE MIDDLE OF A BATTLE!
Overall, I really enjoyed this and think you will too.

I enjoyed the puzzles but didn’t really like the combat, especially against the big guy. I couldn’t figure out what to do there so I eventually noclipped to safety.
I’ve played through it a second time, and found that all puzzles are indeed solvable. The combat makes it really difficult to get the door open in the water but other than that it’s pretty good to play
Yes, everything is certainly solvable, but that double door really caused me problems.
How were you supposed to solve the laser trip mine riddle in the section with the key and the wires then? Was me just jumping through them the correct solution? There weren’t enough movable boxes to blow them up and as I already wrote, you could blow up the boxes you needed to reach the wires. Or did I overlook something there?
Firstly, you don’t need to explode any of the mines. Next, jump on the set next to the barrel and shelves. You will probably land on a box and break it, don’t worry. Then, use the silver box to reach the orange pipe and climb over/around the other trip mines. That will get you to the hook. Collect it and get back to the fence with the dead guy.
You will then be able to get the key. Open the door and collect the pliers. Now get over two sets of trip mines to reach the double doors but use the left one as the right one won’t work. This will give you access to wires which can be used repair the two sets of broken wires.
Once this is done you can open the fire door and collect a screwdriver which will allow you to open the air vent.
PHEW! It reads a lot worse than it actually is.
Ah, I didn’t think I could jump on top of the shelf and from there over the mines! Still it was a lot of tricky millimeter jumps afterwards with the one on the pipe being the most improbable. Also besides the door opening only one half, there is another one with a broken lock which still opens. Bad map design! Also who stole all the NPCs weapons ;)?
I agree with Phillip that this mod was rather average and that some “riddles” were quite stupid! Besides the double door already mentioned, I couldn’t jump into the first vent from the box below so I used noclip. I jumped through some laser mines later because I had no other idea of what to do and blew up some others with movable boxes which left me without one when I needed to repair a wire. That’s a lot of broken map design here in my opinion!
Well, that was a bit weird experience. First there was nothing else but puzzles and after that just shooting and shooting.
Good:
-I did like that this guy had used lots of sounds affects etc. Screams here and there, ominous garg sounds, crying scientist in warehouse.. Just little things, but most of the Half-Life mods are so quiet overall.
-Few scripted moments.
Bad:
-Going room after room, but i didnt feel that i was making any progress.
-Just few scripted moments…
-There was no interaction with NPC’s, that was a big no no for me. There was just 1 scientist and no barneys if i remember correct.
-What comes to sounds, military is already there, but no intercom messages. We are in Black Mesa anyways.

Glaring errors, intentionally abusive to the players in its design, basically useless with few redeeming qualities, gameplay could have been potentially great but confuses….itself. In other words, puzzles are one thing, but this one falls on its own sword, so to speak.
I should be saying Avoid It but I’m being “nice”.

Well this one was a mixed bag for me. In general I’d say it was worth playing, but it feels uneven. It has a couple very clever sections and it does a good job of keeping the player off balance. At the same time, it can get pretty frustrating. The ‘puzzle’ section that is the first half or more of the pack is kind of an old school find-the-correct object type hunt. It frustrated me until I learned to take a really close look at everything around me. It’s still not my favorite type of design but I did like the different approach compared to all other HL maps out there.
I really liked the garg section. A bit of puzzle, mixed with the serious gargantua threat, made for a nice change of pace. But immediately after that, you swim headfirst into a Black Ops ambush. God help you if you lost any health to the garg before escaping.
The mapping was pretty good, and for the most part the puzzles were clear (in that you knew what you were hunting for, in general). It felt like BMRF and the use of sound is solid. In the end it kind of feels like just a bunch of corridors and in that respect doesn’t really feel like BM.
In all, maybe worth your time.

It it good mod. There is some quests and puzzles, so it makes mod more interesting. Game is hard, ut interesting too. Black Ops – hard enemies. But i made it! 🙂 But end of this mod not good, because i dont know – it is THE END or it will be Hopelessness 3? But mod is very interesting and good, although sometimes it is difficult to play. “Play it now!”

I quite enjoyed the first Hopelessness, so I was more disappointed with this than I might otherwise have been. It actually starts out pretty good with a long weaponless segment with some basic puzzles. They’re not exactly groundbreaking but are still fun.
Once you get weapons though it seems like the maps go sharply downhill. You are thrown into an assassin fight after having just taken a lot of damage and the rest of the mod is just uninteresting. The final battle in the parking garage was just ridiculous and is followed by a really anticlimactic ending. We didn’t even make it outside!
Play it for the puzzle section and some decent looking levels, but don’t expect too much.

My overall feeling with this mod, is that the previous one was better, at least for my liking.
Here we start with a terrible voice acting at the beginning, I just heard some guy crying like a sissy and saying I’m sorry!!! out loud so I really didn’t like that at all, because I also felt that voice acted scene was so out of place from the atmosphere of the mod, so if you really want to cry like a ghost and shit, do a scary mod, not a HL1 Universe one.
Then after that lousy voice acting part, you just are unarmed for a long, long time in this mod, for me it was like 20 minutes, that was what it lasted the first puzzle solving section in this mod, which it was a big pain in the arse!!! at least for me, because a big important trigger just didn’t worked out for me, and that’s the big fire door never got activated once I fixed the broken wires in that cable. so that ruined all the experience for me as I forcedly had to noclip that section.
Also before you get to the first search stuff puzzle, you have to do a very, very hard jump to a ventilation shaft where a ladder is embedded, that jump is stupidly hard, I mean I also had to noclip there and that just pissed me off.
The puzzle where you found the scientist’s beheaded head in order to progress, I have to recognize was clever and a cool puzzle and is quite easier than the previous puzzle, so I found that section of the mod quite unbalanced.
Then the other 20 minutes of my gameplay were based on the combat. From the Gargantua part where you found the SMG (which by the way this mod didn’t allowed me to use the HL1 enhanced weapons pack) and ahead, that Gargantua part is rather a challenge I recognize is fun to battle a HL1 boss like that one and at the same time solve a escape puzzle, but oh boy, don’t do that if your going to place a super hard arse battle against super hard black ops next!!!! I left that Garg battle with only 19 of health so when I face the Black Ops ambush I got killed almost immediately after I get out of the water!!! so again, as cheating was my only option to not ruining that crucial part of the mod I had to apply the god trick.
And then once you finish the combat section again the end is silly, almost feels like a big middle finger in front of your face after the so much effort you’ve been thru!!! I guess that’s why this mod is called hopelessness.
So overall this mod is for me a big maybe, because almost forced me in many crucial points of it to cheat and that just sucks in a HL mod. That issue for me only reflects a lack of beta testing, and an overall low quality as the whole mod feels quite unbalanced. And despite of this, I like the hardcore combat and some puzzles, but I have to warn you that if you are not patient enough with some puzzle solving situations you definitely are going to dislike this one.

I’d love to keep going, but I’m stuck in a large hangar-like room, must be ten minutes into the mod. I can hear someone crying behind an loading door, and there’s a fire door you can crouch under, and there’s just nowhere to go from there. I’ve even used noclip to check every single door just to see if I can find the correct way to proceed, but I can’t find any way to go!
pros
-the puzzles where ok
-the keypad part was better than the one from the last game
-The atmosfere was great
-the assasins at the part where you didnt had weapons scared me
cons
-the ending was disappointing
-the garg part was a bit unfair
-it was way too short
-no vox
-the map had no real “valve” charm (it was a bit room to room)
notes
it has a lot of cons but overall its worth playing
This is a good mod, but I still like the first Hopelessness more.
The biggest problem is that there doesn’t seem to be a balance between combat and puzzle-solving. You’ll be solving puzzles with items and no weapons, and suddenly, in the next room, you’ll be fighting a Gargantua out of nowhere. Mapping-wise, it’s great, with really good lighting and architecture.
Overall, I would recommend this mod, but keep in mind, it does have some problems, and you won’t be shooting a lot of people.

Hopelessness 2 follows where the prequel left off, you are presumably rescued by somebody after what happened in the first one. That or some damned soul of Hell did it because the voice acting is atrocious.
The first part of the mod is about you are unarmed and there are puzzles you have to solve. It has some good attempts at a puzzle room and some horror atmosphere, both could have been better. In the puzzle room, there are tripmines and you have to move boxes to get over them. The problem is the boxes can move too fast and trigger them. The horror only relies on being in the dark while some spooky ambiance plays. I feel like that was cheap.
Then, you are trapped in a room with Gargantuar and you have to solve a puzzle while this thing is chasing you. I personally dislike this concept of solving a puzzle and avoiding an enemy at the same time. Some parts in this room could have been clearer such as what does the valve does. This room really needs more supplies since the Gargantuar will burn through your health and armor quickly, and then you have to fight Black Ops afterward, with no resupplies and they have a lot of grenadiers.
And another abrupt ending, great. Although, kudos on implementing a working keypad.

If you like puzzle themed mods, then this is for you, it has little combat as well but still it’s more of a puzzle mod so i give a maybe?
