Heart of Evil: Napalm Edition (HOE NE) is a remake of the original Heart of Evil.
Heart of Evil was an enjoyable Single Player modification that truly gave the player something different – “a Single Player Half-Life mod that accurately and sensitively depicts the American ‘experience’ in Vietnam, right down to the laces on the zombies boots.”
HOE NE will let veterans and newcomers alike relive that experience.
They put a lot of work into the original concept and we want to it endure.
For that reason we updated the mod as best we can. The source code was released publicly February 1, 2007. Shortly after, we started development. By shortly, we mean months.
HOE NE features updated Models, skins and animations; revitalized Maps with new effects, visual improvements and altered gameplay; tweaked NPC and weapon code.
This is a community project. That means it’s not for profit. All work will be properly credited to its respective owners. This is not a Source project/port.
- Extract the Evil folder into either your \SteamApps\[username]\half-life or \SteamApps\common\half-life folder, whichever is relevant to your particular Steam installation. Do not copy the dll files if they are already present in your half-life folder.
- Restart or start Steam.
- Heart of Evil Napalm Edition should now be listed in your Library tab.

If you believe this release is missing important tags, please suggest them in a comment?
I’ve been keeping an eye on this. It looks pretty damned impressive. Lot of talent contributing to this.
They’re also updating the “Half-Life 2” section to reflect the actual HL2 Valve made, which is cool.
Coop Mode? I remember the maps weren’t really linear, so how can this be w/o the maps resetting everytime u enter one?
Is this Coop only? This was a very long SP game released in parts over a period of time and whilst it was a most enjoyable experience the skins were a bit 2D. So I would be interested in seeing how it’s been improved, however, do not want to waste time with a big download if it has no SP content. Also what version is the PP link above?
No, it’s going to be SP.
None, it’s not released yet. The links above are to the homepage, the gallery and the original release.
Thanks Phillip, will look forward to this one.
We are modifying the code in the maps and the maps themselves to work properly.
There will be a set of improved maps for SP and optimized maps for COOP. So the experience will be somewhat different.
VERY cool! Can’t wait! I enjoyed this mod a lot, though it was very difficult!
Editor321, are you chnging the maps themselves – different layouts, number of npc’s etc.?
We are going to “improve” the maps. This is still somewhat in the discussion stages as we don’t have the other mapper we need for the project.
What we have planned is more models than props and better visuals. The layouts will stay essentially the same, as for the number of NPC’s, at this time no idea. Need that other mapper :p Saxon is quite busy and would like the help.
I’ve just added their new promo video.
Looks fantastic so far. Still can’t wait for that coop play!
I can ensure this is one of the five best mods for Half Life. There’s to much too see, all new story, enemies (some the original behavior and AI, like the mutant gorilla =D), background stories in some texts, lots of interesting puzzles.
If you think Half Life mods can’t give more to you and never played this, YOU HAVE TOO!
This GAME is too good to be free ^^.
Nice update, really, but those walk animations seriously need more work. They walk like rusty robots, robots imitating transvestites, totally weird.
No offense, but these upper arms held close to the body but the lower arms spread…it’s just the look 😀
Still, awesome mod 🙂
Phillip, can you disable the recommendation system in this post until the pack gets released?
Currently, no. I have been looking for a coder to make the recommendation system a plugin for WordPress and part of the rating system for a while.
I would then be able to chose which categories the system is displayed for.
I remove the images when I noticed them on unreleased projects, I must have missed the one above (Now removed).
Oh man, I remember this the first time round. Huge, in some places confusing, and constantly pretty damn funny. New enemies, new weapons and lots and lots of stuff to shoot holes in. I like 😛
Looking forward to playing it again in it’s newer, shinier version.
when will this new version come out
Q2 of 2008 if all goes well.
In image 8…
..just…what?
What was it you replaced? It is gloriously, wonderfully new. What did it used to be?
Bullsquid. 🙂
Really?
Now that’s what I call an enhancement!
Keep up the good work 🙂
this looks like a wicked mod! I carnt wait til it comes out!
The mod looks like an extreme improvement, but I kinda feel I might like the old voice acting a little better.
Hope to see this soon, though 😀

Looking good. can’t wait to play it.
Dang, for a second there I thought it said “release”
So it’s released! Downloading now!
Having never played HL1 mods via Steam I am not sure how to load and play recent download HEART OF EVIL : NAPALM EDITION. The readme file states Simply extract the files in this ZIP folder to your Half-Life directory.
It should look like this C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\youremailaddress\Half-Life\Evil.
I have Half Life: Source installed and showing in my Steam menu. Do I just create Files\Steam\SteamApps\youremailaddress\Half-Life\Evil or does it require to be generated by other means? Either way I think I need an idiots guide. Thanks in advance.
Okay I haven’t tried to install this mod but firstly, forget HL: Source altogether. It’s not related to this mod, so you don’t need it.
This is correct: C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\youremailaddress\Half-Life\Evil.
Don’t forget the two other .dlls files.
Then restart Steam and it will be listed in your Games menu, like Source mod would.
I am doing this as I type and will add to this comment if it’s different.
EDIT: Okay, the above works for me.
Sorry Phillip but I did say I needed an idiots guide, which was why I put it on the forum, I was using this mod as an example but my question applies to any Steam HL1 mod.
So I think I need to know from basis, I dont have the said file created on my machine, so I am thinking I don’t have HL1 Steam means, have always played HL1 through WON menu.
Asking for an idiots guide doesn’t mean you have to ask on the forum, but let’s ignore that. It sounds like you don’t have a Steam installation of HL1 then. You could try going to “Activate a product on Steam” which is near the bottom of the “My Games” tab. Then you will enter the requested information, things like the activation code from your WON copy. Be warned though it might have already been registered! If that doesn’t work, send me an email and I can lend you an acount until you/we figure out how to get you a proper copy. (Lending you an account is very easy and doesn’t require much effort on your part, and it’s still easy to use all your currently installed mods etc)
If you have HL won edition use that key to activate it on steam.HL source dont work for much of anything concerning mods.
That’s what I said, but Mel should know that there is a chance that his WON version has already been registered. He might be able to get it back depending on how he bought it.
I’m very excited about this. I’ll play it tonight and finish it tonight I think 🙂
I seem to be having a problem with the document inventory. No matter which one I choose it only shows the text from the last thing in the list.
This mod is very good. Well made, well presented and a lot of fun. But who, oh why, oh why, were some of the best sequences removed? The helicopter ride with “Ride of the Valkyries” playing, the truck being chased by a helicopter as you travel to the next base, and so on. And the zombies are VERY hard to kill. The first two I met when the silo doors of an army base opened were shot to the ground at least 5 times before I used explosives. They just kept getting up again!
I need these questions answered, and even though some of the bigger mechanics have changed, this is definitely my final score of the mod.
The zombies can only be killed with explosives or a m60.Its in one of the letters when you get to the base.Think its also in the readme
As I’ve said, I love this enhanced version of the mod, but why change these things? Even for the whackiness of this mod that makes little sense.
the horror the horror. I wont be able to play this till the weekend. oh, the horror.
looks great and large. I have hoped for a large HL1 mod to come out.
I cannot rate it. I do not do do HL any more and fail to understand the recent rash of HL mods. HL is brilliant for it’s time but then so were Blakestone and Doom. Have we not moved on with EP2 and the Orange Box?. Nostalgia is all very well and, hey, I suffer from it from time time myself.
I’m off to bed to dream of times past and then wake up to the new dawn and new adventures and experiences (even though I’m in the UK and our governments is carp).
Yeah well, good for you. As for me I continue to enjoy HL1, a game that never gets old; In fact, I find it amazing the fact that modders still work on this brilliant game and come up with awesome creations. Thanks a lot to the talented people of the HiT forums, HL improvement, HL creations and also PP for keeping this great game alive!
Yes, the only reason to play games more than a few years old is nostalgia. That this is a TC makes that statement even more ridiculous.
I am not sure if I will play through this version, I well remember the original and how the author first released in parts so building up the suspense and expectations. That aspect of the game won’t be there for me; however I am still a lover of HL1 and as such always living in hope that someone in the future will come-up with a release that matches the best of the custom releases. As for having a crap UK government your alternative is dog #$%&.
Need a hint. Who is supposed to fly the Plane?
Opps Nevermind I got it!
Hi, Naked-Headcrab, thanks, you are correct; it is good for me. It is also good for those who do not agree with me that PP does what he does for you. I hope you keep playing and enjoying.
Mel, your spelling!!!! Tut tut. I wrote carp (a big stinking rotting pile of them) not crap. That would be just rude and we would prefer dog #$%&.!
Anyway, if all those gifted people who make HL mods moved to HL2, preferably EP2, I, and I suspect others, would be in heaven.
I can’t open the doors which leads to the plane any clues ??
I have the fuel used the car with it’s 4 tyres killed the general called in for help by that traitor sergeant and still I can’t open the doors which lead to the airstrip. Do I need a key for them or what’s going on. I checked on youtube loaded a video showing the original mod
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtNbO1Sx-dU&feature=PlayList&p=A2F010E7B428ACC0&index=10
and there you don’t need any keys etc.
nevermind… A stupid headcrap body blocked the door all the time… ^^
Except for some minor bugs with the documents in inventory what doesn’t work for me.
It’s a great remake.
so that Barney dude has to be locked up too (i.e.: inside that prison with the oatmeat?)
Thanks for pointing that out Jasper, I did a lot of Carp fishing in England. A lot of recent HL1 releases have come from eastern European countries and I would expect these authors to eventually move on to HL2.
Excellent stuff!
I have reached the fourth chapter (power station) and have a little problem though.
The opening scene is that the plane has just landed, but I find that I am stuck in the plane, no movement at all, a bit like the old lift bug.
Tried noclip, but that didn’t work!
Any suggestions?
Phil
Belay that!! I have sorted it –
My comment above about the old lift bug made me think.
I used to get round that bug by repeatedly hitting the space bar to make my character jump, so I tried that – and it worked!
Cheers Phil
Having played through the whole thing, I encountered a few bugs and several flaws, which I mentioned at the HIT forums. I’m going to copy-paste the list rather then type it all again.
Good Points
– Models. The best part of Napalm. They’re all awesome.
– Unkillable zombies. Took a while to get used to it, but once I did it made perfect sense and worked brilliantly. Must have been hard to code.
– Redone levels. Haven’t played through them all, but the ones I have played through were excellent.
– The Alamo. Surprisingly strong add-on.
– The UFO replacement. The temple, as well as being very well made, also makes much more sense.
Bad Points
– The new voices. Barney’s a little too silly now, and it was hard to understand your two superiors at the beginning.
– Letters. There’s some engrish in the redone ones which breaks the flow.
– Chapter titles. While well done, they’re utterly inappropriate.
– Chopper/Truck rides. They may not have been entirely in keeping with the rest of the mod, but I’ll be damned if I don’t miss that opening chopper ride with the Wagner blaring out.
– The controls. Most people these days use a WASD configuration – it took me 10 minutes to remap all the buttons from the completely different set-up the mod came with by default. Not the most major of criticisms I know, but it’s a pain all the same.
– Letter Storage. Several times I’ve been given several diary entries or multiple part letters in a single location. Which would be fine if the game gave me enough time to read them (it doesn’t) or it let me re-read them at my leisure at a later date (it should, but due to a glitch, every entry from the chapter you’re in displays the text from the last read letter). Being able to store the letters is a nice idea, but it’s flawed in practice.
– The End. Or rather, what ending? A huge chunk’s been cut from the original – no HL2 section, no zombie Barney, nothing. The game doesn’t end, it just sort of… stops. Hardly a satisfying conclusion to the story.
Overall, it’s a good enough mod, but I can’t help feeling that it would have been better if they’d just released the models separately rather then redoing the whole mod.
Oops! Spoke too soon – see my posts above – I can move about in the plane now, but I can’t get out of it.
Barney is just standing in the cockpit and won’t respond to me, whilst outside zombies are shot and don’t die and then they kill the soldiers.
And I can’t repeat my “jumping” trick to reload the chapter from the start ————
Suggestions anyone?
Oh! bugger!!!
I am out of the plane now – what is it about PP that provides answers to problems without anybody saying anything!
It is a wonderful site.
From the beginning it freezes up, several times it froze my pc.
i am progressing very well in this super great mod. but, I am having no luck in loading the elephant shot gun rounds. I try alt fire for the shot gun and reload only loads the standard rounds. anyone have any ideas? I was thinking of shooting all my basic rounds and then useing the elephants if it would let me. but, before I did that I figure its just a key I didnt bind to standard wasd. thanks
The secondary fire for the shotgun isn’t at all explained in-game, so I’m not surprised you’re having trouble.
In order to load the shotgun with the buckshot shells, you need to have some free space in your shotgun. Since a full shotgun has 7 shells loaded, get down to about 4. Once there, press the secondary fire (the right mouse button) to load the buckshot shells ON TOP of the normal ones. Now, when you fire the shotgun, you’ll fire the buckshot shells until you run out, at which point you’ll go back to the nromal shells.
Hope that helps.
thanks, I have a feeling I will need them. I will try them latter tonight. if I survive i’ll post a comment, if not well. I died trying. hehe.
Having a problem finding the first key for gate in the 1st lvl. Any hints??
where’s I can download this pack??? thanks
In the main post, near the top, there is a section called “PlanetPhillip Download Servers”,with three thumbnails. These link to the file.
cant get to the boat house, have cleared medical but cant move on. hints please.
Looking around, it seems that the Barney at the boat house is a glitch. I also had to use no clip to get through the barricade to get to the next map. I saw a posting that the authors are planning a patch and the stuck Barney is one of the fixes.
Others have posted they finished the game. how did you get past this glitch? I even tried pushing Barney with out using the “e” button, all I could do was get him to turn. I know of no cheat to spawn him in the boat dock if that would even help.
I hope someone will post a reply as I have really in enjoyed this mod up to now.

i could not find hart of evil via half life 1 mods. here is a link to download the first one, it is “glitch free”. the graphics are very low quality kinda blue shift without the enhancement pac. as a teaser but not a spoiler. I got to ride in a worrlie floptor and listen to the ride of the Valkyries.
oh you cant have both installed. so mr. freeman its time to choose…. sure wish a patch for napon was available. hate to start all over again. oh hum….
a funny thing happened on my way through the jungle.
I started from scratch. got to the first base. then I noticed a stock save. I loaded it right at the boat. barney is in das boot and we went a sailing. a nice way to complete the mod with out haveing to do it all over. so, if ya got napalm then play till the boat glitch then load hart of evil old. then the game continues.
I think I would rate it as play it now/maybe cause of the glitch. am loving it so far.
AWESOME!
i just finished. wow what a super mod. I would tell you how great the ending was but…the horror the horror prevents me from doing so. play it. its a long one.
I do not think I am at the end but it would be the first time I asked how to proceed, I am stuck. I tried it hl no steam and with steam, I can not proceed.
I have just shot down a black helecoptor; it is right after the first set of rice fields,/ you go through a hall then down a ladder/ through a tunnel up a ladder/ you are in a straw hut and you see the big gun/ shoot down the chopper. then nothing I nocliped around even
If you’re on map namb4, you’re about a quarter of the way through. You should have Barney along. Lead him to the truck and he’ll drive it.
There was a walkthrough (no longer online) I can upload somewhere if you want.
Maybe I killed barney I have a habit of that you know thank you I will back up look for barney and spare him.
It’s just perfect. Barney is no longer a pain in the butt, the remodeling of the weapon and characters and the lines of talk are all perfect. The difference in difficulty is huge if you ask me. The old version the zombies could die with any weapon but you waste a lot of ammunition, in the Napalm version they die only with explosives(usually). Without any exaggeration the old is far more difficult than the new one but in the same time the new one is funnier, more easy, less puzzles.
Just out of curiosity I make a test LOL . I copy all the files of the old HOE and overwrite the new HOE NE. The results was quite interesting!!!
GOOD Results:
1)You will have all the new models of weapons and characters
2)Zombies dies with any weapons and they die harder like in the old HOE
3)You will see a mix version of models of zombies from the new and old HOE
4)I don’t know how it was possible but the inventory of weapons is more clear and colorful!!!! In the new HOE NE the inventory is totally green like the opposing force style.(weird)
5)You will play the game by using and protecting Barney and you will have to go through puzzles. Exactly, you will play the game like the old HOE.
BAD Results:
1)The pistol and m60 they gonna act weird!! You cannot see them behave normal. For example in the way they shoot, they will reload when u don’t use the reload button(they don’t actually reload they behave like that) , the melee button of the pistol is acting like you equip the pistol. The very least is that you can use them anyway
2)The grenade launcher will no longer throw the grenade more far away and it will not be so strong like in the new HOE NE.
3)The sniper rifle shooting will be slower(like in the old HOE)
4) The claymore becomes laser trip mine. And it will not have a perfect image.(it become totally black-gray)
5)The snarks will exist and you can use them but when you equip them a weird green lettering appears on the middle of the screen.
In simple words, you will play the HOE(old) with the new models and stuff of the new HOE NE but with few bugs or glitches.
The choice is yours.
I forgot to mention on my previous post the one above that you should NOT OVERWRITE the files.
I’m stuck in level namd5: I reached the tank, give my coordinates to a certain Kilmore, but nothing happens?
The onley way out is going back to level namd4 ,there is then a chopper and ennemies, but I don’t find any way-out ore level-change (exept if I go back to level namd3 – but I suppose this is not the goal?)
Gilfrary: can you post a link to a walkthrough?
Two caveats: I don’t see a link on Internet Archive, normally the first place to look, and the walkthrough is for the original version of the mod.
That said, I do have the saved webpages for the walkthrough. I can zip them and post a link if you’re interested.
Oh yes: I Ã m interested ! So, be so kind to zip and post them ?

thanx very much !
You’re welcome.
Just sweet!!, unique in it’s gender, love to see vietnam war that funky way!, if u love this better play HoE Source avilable on Mod DB!
i got thru this thing all the way… and at the end one of the choppers freeze in the air. So I was stuck at the finale.
This was an awesome mod! An amazing recreation of Heart of Evil. The visuals are awesome! Unfortunately the gameplay was clunky and the game was full of bugs. Play the original Heart of Evil first.

Help! I’m towards the end of the second mission. I refuel the plane and board it but there is no-one at the controls. Is Barney supposed to fly the plane? If so, he won’t get into the cockpit.
Amazing! Minutes after posting that I tried again and Barney went into the cockpit, despite trying to get him to do that umpteen times before.
That’s always the way!
Heart of evil napalm edition is a well made mod based around the vietnam war for the gold source engine. The mod is very welly scripted and modeled with some npc’s like the US marines and the vietcong looking very realistic and the weapon models and reload animations are very smooth and seem to have had a lot of care placed into it. The mod feels like a tongue and cheek reimagining of Francis Ford Coppola’s movie “Apocalypse Now” (A psychological horror/action film based in the vietnam war) with aspects that are unique to the setting that blend together in a fashion that would look interesting in any other fashion. The mod is a full experience that is fun and exciting but still has its problems that messes up certain parts in the game via game breaking bugs and somewhat racist names for characters with the latter being acceptable for its tongue and cheek style. This mod has 3-4 points where it is a 50-50 chance that the mod will break at no fault of your own but it luckily has a patch that you can install that removes large chunks of gameplay due to its buggy nature instead of taking the time to go back and fix it. Another large problem is that the game will break its own logic at certain points where the main enemy which is parasite controlled zombies originally when introduced could only be killed with explosives during gameplay will change the rules and will change form this unique enemy to a re skinned zombie form hl which and get annoying because it feels like it let down a really unique design choice due to no one testing the gameplay.
Overall I would give heart of evil a ⅗ star rating and it would fall under the maybe? Category in RTSL
For me, it was just boring, I couldn’t even finish, I got really bored, not even joking
I guess they made a fantastic job on changing pretty much everything from the original game, but by making that, it got boring for me

Heart of Evil is a fun experience with a few very rough edges. Heart of Evil adds a lot, and that’s generally what I look for from a mod. There’s a few new weapons, along with some content imported from Opposing Force, which is always nice to see.
All of the new enemy models/remodels look pretty nice, with the exception of the vort replacements (what the hell are they?). I wish the mod would’ve explained the origins of the creatures, though.
Areas and maps are absolutely huge and expansive. There’s a lot to explore, and objectives will often have you running around the whole map. It’s a nice change from Half-Life’s normally linear level design.
However, this becomes a bit of a double-edged sword. I found myself getting lost a lot in levels, and while it wasn’t as bad as something like Timeline III, it still put quite a bit of extra time onto my playthrough (which is why I spent about 5 hours on one mod).
In terms of story, there’s not many issues I have with it. The only things I didn’t like were how the creatures’ origins were never explained (like I mentioned above) and that the ending was a bit short. I know it’s supposed to be sort of a joke ending, like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but even something more than just a text crawl would’ve been nice for such an insubstantial ending.
There’s quite a few bugs. The first one I encountered was in the very first map. Freeman’s toilet was stuck flusing, to the point it could be heard all throughout the map. Luckily, it went away upon getting in the truck.
The document system seems to be broken. The first letter I picked up says absolutely nothing. Also, I can only read the latest document I picked up; clicking on any document simply brings me to the latest one. There was quite a bit of text that I missed out on as a result of this bug.
If I bumped into Barney during a scripted sequence, he’d stop walking to his destination and instead behave like normal again, meaning I’d have to reload the latest save to get the sequence to work again. Luckily, the autosaves were never very far from where he was standing.
On the broader subject of AI and path-finding, it was very bad. I don’t know if this was because of the base HL pathfinding, something to do with the mod, something to do with my computer, or a combination of any of the three, but the pathfinding was horrible in my playthrough. Instead of fighting alongside me, friendly NPCs would often stand to the side and shout “the enemy!” instead of actually firing, to the point where enemies would be attacking them and they would just stand there. They would also refuse to go down most flights of stairs, oddly enough.
On the subject of Barney, he’s probably my favorite part of this mod. He’s just so hilariously pathetic, and his voice acting sells the role. I like how the in-universe explanation for his AI being so bad is just that he’s really stupid.
Unfortunately, I did not find a lot of the other humor in this mod to be that funny. Besides Barney, there were a few good jokes here and there; but I found most of the jokes were just being offensive for offensiveness’s sake. Maybe humor has changed since this mod was first released, but I simply do not find the mod to be very funny.
Lastly, I saw quite a few comments saying this wasn’t as good as the original version. Apparently some of the content was cut from this version or something. Is there really any differences between Napalm Edition and the original? If there is, I’ll probably play that one next as a comparison.
Overall, I’d definitely recommend this mod. Once you get past the humor, you’ll find a very fun time, but not exactly polished.

So this game is really something else, on one hand it’s a visually really impressive game, and the voice acting and story is funny yet serious at the same time, even nearly offensively so at times.
On the other hand the gameplay is mostly a parody of the resident evil series, you will remember those 2 big hubs where you have to run around different areas looking for keys to open doors to get other keys.
I’m especially putting it a little low because I ran into many game breaking bugs, especially with the boat.
If you want a game that doesn’t hold your hand and wants you explore for hours and you want this feeling of finally understanding a complex level, this is for you.
