I need to tell you right off that this is an ALT mod; there is no combat or puzzles involved.
It’s a Dear Estheresque wander through some caves.
There’s some gold to find but you can’t do anything with it. Check out the author’s comments on GB.

This is an interesting mod and I am pretty sure the addition of work antlions would fit nicely into the them and provide us combat junkies with some much needed fun.
There’s some pretty vistas but all in all it’s not that much fun, at least for me.
This is one of a growing collections of BBB mods: Beautiful But Boring.
The inclusion of a few hard to find areas might have been something to pique my interest, but alas there are none. Only play if you like wandering around.
So could you specify what aspect(s) of Dear Esther make it different from, or better than a BBB mod? (And I’m talking about the mod version of Dear Esther, as I haven’t played the standalone)
“BBB” mods… Thank you for mentioning the Dear Esther aspect, as I thought this “genre” of “game” would have only one and unique reprsentant.
Well, I didn’t say Dear Esther was a BBB mod.
Ha Long Treasures is a very nice mod; well I do enjoy wandering around!
I found it more reminiscent of “The Goonies” than dear old Esther, finding all that rich stuff. The only thing missing was a pirate ship in the middle of a cavern!
There were some awkward jumps but, luckily, no booby traps!
A pleasantly relaxing mod that goes great with a cuppa and a sandwich!
Not epically arty like “Dear Esther”, free version, but nice and fun.
Do you want to know how a coastal cavern feels like?, well this is for you, I like the environment and those beautiful textures and light touches all over the map, this is a map definitely worths the effort, but im of those who would loved to have combat in it, and if u think well definitely the author could have added some action in the interesting part of the map, fighting against antlions and antlion guards would have been cool, and the wreck ship part would be fitted there as a climax combat perfectly, like if some cmb would have been there to defend that misterious gold or something like that, then in the escape 2 hunters or just one and it would have been the perfect balance betwen a beautiful environment and combat action.
I am thinking that an: “inspiring natural environment-combat” mapping comp. would be great for some mappers whose style is like that and for players that enjoys to fight the cmb in real life scenarios as me, playing in the woods, coast, caves, jungles, desserts aztec wrecks I mean those inspiring scenarios.
I love cave exploring, and I really did enjoy the new version of “Dear Esther” just too bad there was no combat! The author of this mod has a nice video a player subbmited on his site!
It’s a nice looking map but I think it could have been made a little more interesting with more danger. I was walking up the tunnels thinking they were perfectly suited for a “Raiders of the Lost Ark” boulder run or maybe some spikes shooting out of the wall. A few puzzles would have been nice too.
This is a beautiful map, just gorgeous. And although there isnt any combat, there are a few puzzels, which is important. And finding the ship and other gold cache’s is also fun.
Although the map looks great visually, it also stands out in the often overlooked audio catagory. The audio dynamic is something I always take note of in every mod that I play, as I feel that sound effects are very important to a mod for the sake of atmosphere. I am pleased to say that in the audio catagory, this mod does not dissapoint. The map’s ambience and variety of sound effects really makes the atmosphere drip with realism.
The only thing…I think I can speak for most of us when I say a bit of combat would of been good. Phillip mentioned antlion workers which I totally agree with. Personally, I would of liked to see the spiders of Dark Messiah in those caves!
“Lack of combat” not withstanding, this map is a true work of art. I hope to see more from this author in the future.
I give the author a great deal of respect for taking the time to make such a beautiful environment and I agree with blue lightning above about the audio dynamic, the sounds add to overall feel for-sure. This author has a ton of talent and I hope to see it in the future for a story based combat/puzzle/exploration map.
Of course at the end I just couldn’t resist practicing my high cliff diving skills into the water pool below.
In short: It’s a linear cave exploration map, no combat and some pretty decent platforming the focus is very much on how it looks and that being the case it could have been better.
In long: The environment over all looks good, lighting is very well done and there are some nice looking areas, some of the connecting areas are a bit bland but I suppose this could be meaning to contrast with the more impressive areas you get to explore. Unfortunately the map doesn’t particularly reward your exploration, it goes through a linear path often points of interest look better from afar suffering from some misaligned textures clipping objects, under detailed objects and hard edges also the ending could have been better.
Seeing as the focus of this map was environment I’m being particularly harsh on this subject compared to most other maps it looks great.
The level picks up towards the end with some platforming sections that add the much needed interactive element to the gameplay although a little late on in my opinion.
I don’t think it necessarily needed combat but there definately needed to be a bit more to engage the player.
I just stumbled across this map, and it seems as much of a hidden treasure as the gold itself! This is a really nice exploration mod, allowing you to visit some beautiful and atmospheric environments. I felt compelled to search every corner for more loot, and the few puzzles that were included were fun without being too taxing. Combat isn’t really neccesary to break up this relaxing experience; perhaps the only improvement would be some more “Hollywood” sequences for an ending.
Definitely worth playing for the fantastic graphics and the shipwreck.

A short adventure/puzzle map in which your only goal is to reach the end. I picked up a bar of gold early on and carried it for a long ways, only to find that it was just meant as decoration. It was pretty, but not very fun. Play it if you like to explore.

I really enjoyed this, beautiful to look at and nice puzzles to try and figure out your route with jumps and other stuff. Nothing mind-blowing which is nice as I often find HL2 puzzles just so frustrating lol. Anyhow, this is basically a pretty find your way out map. I’d love to see this expanded now to include some action scenes but nothing too OTT to ruin the explorational element. Very excellent map imho.
