Gauntlet for Half-Life 2: Episode Two - Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

A simple premise: Set up your turrets and protect them, whilst facing 10 waves of various enemies. It sounds a little boring described like that but actually it’s not.

This was actually a lot of fun and it also has a certain amount of replay value. The first time I died I cahnged tactics and I got further. To be honest though I didn’t get very far and even cheating didn’t help much.

I seriously doubt anybody can beat this on hard!

Anyway, it’s not bad for such a simple idea and if you want to spend 20 minutes or so killing everything that moves give it a try.

This map, although simplistic, provides a good amount of fun for such a small download. It would have been nice to be better able to see the enemies as they march through, the map was a bit dark. Once one figures out the proper configuration for the turrets it becomes a simple matter of watching things die and staying out of the line of fire. I was a bit let down by the lack of an ending, and the final wave was also a bit of an anti-climax. I want to encourage the author to expand upon the original idea and to have successive rounds continue to ramp up the difficulty level.

3. Yea, I can understand why you were let down by the lack of an ending, however, the goal of the map is to try something technically innovative with a HL2 map. Thus, I wasn’t worried about the story with this map at all. If it’s story you want, maybe my next release will suit your needs. 🙂

PS- Yes, there are optimal turret placements. If you’re having trouble beating it, try changing up the configuration. As far as beating it on Hard, I don’t know if I would try that. I just don’t think there would be enough turrets for it.

I appreciate the fact that you were trying to do something innovative and that storyline was not a concern. Even just a simple Experiment successful/ fade to black on the death of the last round would have been nice. Regardless of that, beating it on Hard is entirely possible, none of the waves even make it past the bridge. Kudos to you for thinking outside the box.

hii send you (netwalker) a mail, you receive this ?
anyway I propose a following changes / improves for your map:
1. global or local statistics / highscore list, like in modification Exterminate

2. diminishing counter of number enemies which player can miss out before he see “game over” 🙂

3. downstairs or ladder to the bottom of canal, now player can’t set up cannons precisely from the bridge or canal edges

4. birds! it’s my nighmare 😉 I can’t beat wave of this opponents with any way or tactics – so maybe it’s too hard only for me…

6. Gypsy Jim

Think I’ll give this one a try now I’ve read these comments….For a horrible moment when I saw the title I couldn’t help but think of Elves, Dwarves, a Valkyrie and a Wizard…..Shows an old old prejudice!

😉

7. 2. diminishing counter of number enemies which player can miss out before he see “game over” 🙂

If I understand you correctly I believe the map already has this. Look above the area where the enemies walk and you will see a row of red lights. Each time an enemy passes under the end one light disappears.

yes, you right Phillip, I saw this light on the first, but I think so this not working correctly,
but maybe i’m wrong, I check this one again, thanks 🙂

This was pretty fun! I beat it on hard without cheating. The only tricky parts are the two waves of birds. I set up the turrets facing the entrance, sides and exit, then held one turret with the gravity gun and used it to cover stragglers. By sweeping towards the ceiling I was able to prevent too many from escaping. But I don’t know if I could do it again!

Definately a map I shall be keeping – I’ll bring it out again when I’m bored. It’s like Peggle, something to do to pass the time, but when you look at the clock again you’ll get a wee suprise. Suggestions I might make would be to change/vary the turrets (although that’s getting into the realms of coding), and to create a couple more enemies/vary the order, possibly add a sound to notify people when something escapes.

11. Play It Now!

I have a deep and abiding love of friendly turrets, and this mod is nothing but! The waves were arranged a little oddly, since I have the most trouble with one of the earlier ones (damn metrocops) but I’ll overlook this one minor flaw.

Dont lete the enemies pass map – armed with turrets and a pistol. I could not handle the birds even on easy though 🙁

Personal Favourite

Turret defense and setup based maps are a favorite of mine. This Map is well made and worth your time. My computer seriously lacks processing power. So playing this was a challenge in itself. If you want a surprise don’t read the “dontreadme” until after you play. Man I really shit bricks on one of the waves.
Great map. Only peeve is that it didn’t have a reward or any kind of closure

14. I’d give this a PIL if I could finish it. 🙁

It’s fun. I had to cheat to even get as far as I got. It might be worth trying even more different turret positions, but I’m out of patience right now.

Brilliant! Like all the best things, it’s a simple idea that works really well, e.g. Tetris & Rubik’s Cube, you think “Yeah, that looks easy” then several hours later you’re found quietly cursing & toiling away at it!

There are many mods that rely on overly complicated (and often unreliable) game mechanics, or weak maps with the lovely invisible wall we all enjoy so much. This one, however, uses one simple room plus all the game’s original kit and therefore functions perfectly. Simple ideas built on a valid premise often win over huge, wobbly efforts, because ultimately the gameplay is better i.e. NOCLIP not mandatory and NOTARGET & GOD simply aren’t relevant.

Mods frequently fall into three camps,
i) Run like hell, shoot everything (often in the dark, against semi-visible enemies)
ii) Strain your brain trying to figure out some convoluted, pain-in-the-arse conundrum
iii) Think then do, optimizing if necessary (i.e. after failure or death)

This mod is type (iii) and suits those who enjoy refining a particular strategy.
On my first pass, I stupidly set the turrets up on the bridge facing the green ‘doors” – wrong. On the second pass, I put them in the intended place, but poorly – fail. I then cheated and used NOCLIP to put them where I shouldn’t have been able to – ok it worked, but satisfaction=0. So I thought about it, wandered around, sighted down them, tweaked a few, then let rip – wow! Now watch for gaps, pick up any fallen comrades, duck the hail of bullets & stand back to watch the rest! Brilliant, victory on medium skill, very satisfying.

Had I the necessary skill
I would improve the death of G-man! He would have flailed & bounced around, spurting blood, going “Aaaaargghh!” before finally exploding in a shower of bloody gobbets. After all the years of invulnerable taunting, just falling over was somehow not enough!
Some final form of ending was required too.

All in all, simple but very good with infinite variations for replay.

16. Maybe?

This is a cool concept, but I couldn’t beat it because I’m not good at this type of game. Basically, you set up turrets to shoot at NPCs passing by. If one gets to the other side, it takes one of your “health points”. If enough of them get there, it’s game over. I don’t particularly enjoy this type of map, but I know some people do. I know the system requests you to finish a mod before using the recommendation images, but I cannot finish this one. It also could use some more visual details. Some will enjoy this, others will not. If the description interests you, play it, and if it doesn’t, you’re probably like me and won’t be able to finish it.

17. Play It Now!

Very simple tower defense type of map. It’s actually alot harder than you think. Got as far as the wave with poison zombies and there were simply too many leftover headcrabs beelining for the exit. Also did poorly at the beginning leaking too many cops early. I’d think this would be a lot more interesting if it was bigger instead of just one straight hallway.
