This is my favorite mod, play it, it’s really good.
good:newstory,good,models
bad:to many bugs,no new code
It is a very good mod with some nice new content.
There is a Gateway 2.
Gateway 2 was terrible in my eyes. Mapping was not good, and all they focused on was new weapon models. Stick with Gateway 1.
New skins on old models, mostly pretty good. Different story in new environments. A bit spare on the scenery. Portals between maps are very plain. Better than average end battle.
This mod and it’s sequal was good but too short.
New, good looking skins were enjoyable within the first minutes. Weapons are nearly the same and the enemies, too. Highlight: A brilliant silver shining 357. Levels look a bit empty, too dark for my taste. Clever ideas like moveable barrels to stop a liquid silver gargantua from following. Or astonishing turrets on top of a tank. The stolen-HEV-story is nebulous, who are the good and who are the bad guys, and why the scientists wear black and beards?
Grey circles in the walls must are portals leading to very different scenes like cellars, storage areas and a warship with unbelievable halls inside (swimming in black-mesa-creek, whuaha) – but challenging to escape when it sank. It is a well working mappack, good for about one hour. I found it worth to play it later.
I’m a sucker for new content.
Yay, we start with little prologue. Thats always nice to get story going.
But after that… Well, I didnt like that mapping at all. Too dark for me, boxy style with small hallways and “what is this room for” places.
Extra minus for those portals. just jumping from area to area.
Some cool new weapon skins do not save The Gateway from being generally frustrating.
The problem with this add-on is that the author chose to pursue something very compelling, when his skills still needs some work. The end result, is an interesting but thuroughly annoying episode that is not worth the huge download.
There are a few things a will have to give the author credit for though. I was fascinated by the new weapons skins, which could’ve easily been made into great new weapons had the author bothered to fool around with their damage settings. In The Gateway you’ll get some nifty looking guns that appear even more high tech than Valve’s, with maybe the exception of the new umbrella replacing the crowbar 🙂
The best part about The Gateway is its frenzied fights that actually have a war kind of feel. All Xen skins have been replaced by funkier looking grunts with zappers, and German scientists who know how to defend themselves with their fists if they have to. Very often, you’ll go into a situation where the battle becomes hectic, confusing, and very interesting because the three parties involved are all human.
But the fighting in general, like the rest of The Gateway, is severely hindered by poor framerates, horrible skin choices, and other errors that show inexperience on the author’s part. One of the most annoying of the new enemies is the dog-sized Icthysaur that looks harmless enough, but is actually the same enemy from the original game! Framerates became appalling, unfortunately, in the coolest part of The Gateway, on board a battleship.
Although the author was really creative with this add-on, it is one of the more unpolished releases I’ve played through yet, with a plethora of problems that I just don’t think any player would enjoy going through. The epitome of all this is perhaps the last fight. It’s weird, annoying, and a good example of how the author of The Gateway had good intentions but gets wrong results.

It’s been 15 years since this one came out, and in 1999 this must have been a blast, those portal concepts and new weapon and skins may be delighted more than one gamer those days.
BUT now it is just below the low standards of many average HL1 mods, and I guess back there in 99 I guess there were a couple of high quality mods around. I mean, back in those days quality control and beta testing in HL1 mods were practically inexistent and this mod is a prove of that.
Overall is very, very blocky, difficult skill is a mess and the whole mod is very dark, also is one of those mods you have to try in WON version because Steam version crashes right away after the intro.
In conclusion: nowadays this mod is very bad, try it if you want to play ALL HL1 mods if you don’t care about quality, then this is for you.

I remember that this was a pretty short and crude episode, but it had nearly constant action, sequences and new ideas, and the new content added to the freshness factor, so it really was one of those short mods that would get boring if they were longer.
You can play on any mode if you take care of your health
I installed it on steam, it worked with all new models and so on. The easy difficulty was cheated, it is actually higher than usual. The game is nice since you can check the transformation of all heroes here. Barneys are now US Soldiers. There’s some black-ops russian units including american marines with very heavy lightbolt weapons which desintegrate your health to ashes. And you say wow. I saw zombies that are actually CIA agents with angry face and fists. The headcrabs has become purple jumping frogs and the Ichthyosaur has a very small size purple fishes, they look lovely but they are big and angry, their behaivor do not match to their size. And G-Man wow he’s a an alien from the underworld, so angry so dark, you can’t even see his face. Playing this game is like living in the darkness between the most evil creatures of the planet. Welcome to “Hell”. That’s why you are given special mounted weapons, you actually need them.
