I thought it was bad. Simply bad. Nevertheless, I wish him luck with his endeavors. I think he can do better.
heh I thoght it was good for a first mod
Interesting little mod worth a play through. Set design and textures are all new, some work, some don’t, difficult to say much more without giving Spoilers. If it’s a first by the author then it a good effort.
I played this a couple of months back, nice small mod, a little different, liked the fact that you were haunted, didn’t like a part where some enemies kept coming and you were not supposed to shoot all of them, but run through them or something and was no clue about that. Small puzzles here n there, an ok mod.
Very good for me !
Nice Mod, I will wait for the continuem, When it will out?
Okay, now this is very interesting. I have been paying special attention to the reviews from PP readers who have re-reviewed maps and mods as part of the 100SDoN event. Up until now, I don’t think I had reviewed on of the releases.
Here is what I said when I posted this mod…I started to play this but stopped after about 5 minutes, that’s not because the mod was bad but because I simply don’t like running around in castle/tomb places and having to look for exits etc. It certainly looks like he put a lot of work into it.
And now, I loved it, seriously, the creativity is wonderful. I even nearly made it a WOW. Sure it’s blocky and square a lot of the time, but the effects and atmosphere easily make up for that.
I thought it might have been outside the HL universe but it’s just that its setting is a little different.
It’s a pity a continuation was never made.
Anyway, it’s a little dark and almost scary but the gameplay is fun and mot as hard as I initially thought.
Go play it.
I would love to give this higher rating, but…
First few rooms… Wow, those colors and everything. Something different.. But after that, small caves, secret passages, dark dark dark caves, boring caves, aww. But I really liked those colors that he used, maybe far far from realistic for caves, but something new.
Mapping is.. lets say weirdo time to time, but I think fits for overall theme. Those text messages are just flashing to quickly, I missed several lines.
HL Oracle with his ideas + some really good mapper = mod could be amazing.
This mod has some really interesting ideas. Unfortunately the lighting is very dark which makes it difficult to play in places. Still good for a first effort though
And now for something completely different, well if that was the author’s intention, he certainly achieved his goal. it’s just about the most off-beat HL1 offering you are likely to find here on PP, but beyond the oddity facture is there much here for the player?
I am not sure the author had the player in mind when creating this piece, it’s all bit messy for me, with the author digging holes for the player then relying on screen massage to justify some fairly pointless situations.
I guess it’s not meant to make any sense, and on that point it scores, there is no flow to the games just endless screen transitions linking one disjoint to the next. I could criticize the mod on a number of points, but these alone would not mark it down, for me it’s an exercise, a test piece for the author, and if I was viewing not has a player maybe I could find merit in the mod, but has a player it’s a mess.
I also am not really one for wandering dark tombs, at least in Half-Life maps. That didn’t bug me so much as the instant-death consequences for doing something “wrong.” It reminded me of some of the Half-Quake situations but thankfully without the 20 minute wait.
The premise is intriguing: what if Freeman’s actions had a consequence in the afterlife? What if all the havoc he wreaked came back to literally haunt him? But the two maps we have in this pack are just a decent start to exploring that. It offers some nice ideas but there’s no payoff.
So we have a couple maps almost without combat (what combat is there can be tough, when you face a couple alien grunts at close range with only the glock). The cave architecture is passable – at first I was really worried it was going to be a maze of passages. But the lighting is poorly conceived and way too colorful. It would have a better effect if it were constrained to a couple of areas or events instead of colors everywhere. What isn’t lit up colorfully is pretty dark, I had to keep my flashlight for most of the game. It would have been nice, seeing that this mod has supplied new dlls, to have it coded so that the flashlight battery wouldn’t run down.
To sum up? Interesting ideas but not very fun.
Interesting idea on a conceptual level but the final results weren’t as great as I’d hoped.
The level design and architecture work left a lot to be desired and the combat weren’t all to good but I’d say that’s not really what the author was out for originally but more for the creepy dream-like atmosphere that I personally think he nailed pretty well. There’s a lot of blue and red lighting effects with heavy emphasis on the contrast which fits perfectly with the overall design of the maps and the thought behind them.
Overall a good map pack that I enjoyed playing through. Needless to say, however, I’m also a sucker for these more twisted alternate-reality maps and mods so other players may not enjoy it as much or not at all. Give it a try though, you may like it.
In this creation we will portray a grateful descendant who came to visit Freeman’s Tomb.
Despite primitive design and poorly set up battles, playing this is quite interesting. The colourful torches, unstable environment in some areas and good use of sound effects create an original mysterious atmosphere. There are many cool scenes related to Freeman’s life. The author used many beautiful special effects. We’ll even visit Black Mesa once or twice.
If you like beautiful story-driven mysterious adventures, check this map out.
In my opinion, among the steaming pile of the worst mods ever made for HL. Turn it on, shut it off, the end. There, I gave it more time than it earned. Not much more to say really.
Well to me this was a pretty tribute TO THE MAN, yes to that great Gordon that keep us playing mods along the way!, I mean this was a very interesting mod in a kind of a fantasy or those wierd funky dreams somaetimes anyone may have, I liked because was kind of the minerva style, with those misterious voice guiding you across that Fremman’s sanctuary hold by the xenian gosths of the past.
Indeed is really bad that this have no continuing part, so it’s maybe a great idea that someone else retakes this project an continuing, because this is a mine for the creativity arround our beloved Fremman’s misticity.
This one has potential to be a “Play it Now” or even a “Personal Favourite” but not now.
I was unsure whether to give this a “Think Twice”, a “Maybe?” or a “Play it Later” but the action and lighting ultimately effected my decision.
The action in this mod is poor, and of “Avoid It!” quality. This is also the main flaw. You just fight aliens and it is just boring. The puzzles were a lot better, although I do have a soft spot for secret walls and stuff. The puzzles caused me to stop and think sometimes, which is what you would expect a good puzzle mod to do and this was the best part of it.
The lighting was poor and was too dark most of the time. The textures were pretty bland, even a tomb/crypt should be a little more exciting. This mod also has a story and a good one, quite possibly the best story out of all of the maps and mods so far. Another great part of it. The whole Gman thing made me laugh due to how farfetched it was, but then I stopped because I remembered that in the original storyline you have to fight aliens from Xen and go to their homeland in order to stop them. The mod was also a little creepy, such as the scientist room.
Story – Play it Now!
Action – Avoid It!
Puzzles – Play it Now!
General Mapping – Think Twice
Overall – Think Twice
Another one I’ve returned to while waiting for No 068 of the 100, I was really not going to go back to this but what the hell! it’s a rainy Sunday afternoon!
I admit I played this in God mode with impulse 101 (and a little noclip) just to see what it was like, but I really didn’t expect it to be as bad as it was.
The best way I can describe this is by saying I have never in my life taken an illegal narcotic, but this is what I imagine a bad trip would be like, it’s almost what could be described (phlegm, ptooi) an art mod.
Forget the mapping, forget the different approach.
Fun = -10
This mod is weird and I can respect that.
Cannot say much about, as there is not much to talk about.
Describing this little mod with one word would be: ODD!
I don’t know what’s the purpose at all, okay here and there some puzzles, some action and that’s it, even the “story” can’t help out, sorry.. this is poor.
Pro’s:
-Very different from the “usual suspects”
-Some good lighting and design
-Some puzzles, altho irrational
Con’s:
-Very short
-Less action
-Too easy
-Silly story imho
-Just weird
Jesus Christ, I LOVE this mod!!!
The idea is basically a tribute to the one and only Gordon Freeman, and maybe for some it’s not presented so well. But for me, I adored it!
The combat is not anything special, I admit.
The lighting in the beginning is very colorful. In the rest, it’s still good.
Overall, an excellent mod if you ask me, despite its flaws.
