UPDATED
This mappack has now been updated based on feedback received via PlanetPhillip. I have already applied the map 7 & 10 update to the existing mappack.
Author’s Note: “This map pack is really just group of ideas. Any constructive criticism would be appreciated. Each map proceeds in order. Every map can be played individually, so you can load any map and start with weapons. These maps may have some bugs. You can consult the walkthrough if you get stuck. If you get stuck you can always just load the next map.”

I’ve just been told about a way to get this mod working:
- Install SMod Redux version 8.
- Follow these steps on how to fix the Smod redux.
- launch the mod, who is a build of the “old” HL2 engine.
- and then launch the maps of the mappacks!
I don’t know if this works or not, as I haven’t tried it.
A walkthrough for this mod is available. It is in PDF format. You may be able to open this directly in your browser, depending on which one you use and its version or alternatively you can download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader

I need more pics!!!! (haha) DL’ng at this time!
Wow alot of pics looks awesome and its amazing how much you can do with your imagination!
So, this is a collection of maps. IMHO, this deserves your download right now. Do it whenever you can.
This mappack is simple, yet fun, plain killing. Me myself always like to kill things inside a game, and when I don’t do this in Garry’s Mod, I like to find a good map for it. This, ahem, mappack (as I said) is what you need. If you are the guy (or lady) who likes eye-candy, maybe then you’ll not enjoy too much, because the design is a little above average, but with some things probably cut to prevent lag in older machines. As every map is supposed to be conencted, this probably is the story of a fleeing rebel, that in it’s way encounter combine humanoids, synths and metrocops.
Also, there is a bug I spotted in map number 03. I have pics so if allowed I’ll host them and post them here later… Awaiting answer ?
Wow, I’ve never killed so many Combine with the Airboat before! Some very good ideas here, like someone said not so much for eyecandy but real good fun!
Thanks for making these maps!
Brian.
Worth downloading for the Airboat section alone. some puzzles but nothing too hard, certainly fun to play, stuck with a bug on map 7 but will consult the walkthrough tommorow and move on if need be, keep up the good work, there are some good ideas there.
Wow, below average level design but just pure carnage and loads of fun. Easily recommended if you’re after some good “ol fun run “n gun gameplay with some neat physics puzzles thrown into the mix.
Nice bunch of maps, everything played well untill I got to map #7, my frame rate dropped to 2 or 3 then just stopped! It didn’t crash so I dropped the graphics levels way down, but didn’t help, so I went to map #8 and all is well! The rest played very nice with good puzzles and action!! 😉
Hey its the author here. I’m glad to see that everyone liked it. I would like to know what aspects/parts you enjoyed the most and what you didn’t. These maps are the first (in order) that I have ever made, so I really want as much feedback as possible. 🙂
As for the bugs…
Hoyy – if it happens to be a giant man hack in the sky, then its something I forgot to try to fix and I have no idea why it happens considering that its supposed to be impossible.
Zeek and AI – where in map 7 are you having problems. I never encountered anything like what you described except when the game was rebuilding the node graphs. If it says something like that on the screen, just let it sit for a minuet or two. Otherwise let me know.
I havnt played it all yet but so far It is love/hate for me. I love it because it is fresh and new. I hate it because of the convenient placement of fuel barrels. (The explosions are nice but, It appeared repetitive) I have ideas and wished I could map but I opened Hammer and it took me all of 5 minutes to figure out that it wasn’t for me. 🙁
This is probably my second/third post or so here at this site and I do lurk a lot. I think this site and the ideas within rock and I read front page news everyday. I hope you guys dont send the PlanetPhillipPolice after me for my randomness about this particular map pack. 🙁
I do want to encourage the HL2 playerbase to give these maps a go. Play this thing and post. Posting the positive qualities of the hard work that went into it is always a help. Posting the negative helps even more. (be tasteful) Help the author advance in his endeavors. This title needs more quality SP mods/map packs and I feel pretty good about this author’s work.
Ive rattled on enuff. I expect they figured out that I escaped the mental facility by now and the PPP is probably on the way!
P.S. I just noticed the 15 minute bomb timer. *evil grin*
More you play into this collection of maps within order the better it gets.
I didnt notice any texture faults or any bugs that made desktop crashes.
Framerates only dropped within FM_map7 at its begining but went back to normal again
The Airboat ride after its second level really brings in some fresh & exciting Whoa moments & the last levels 8 to 10 were the best for combat & level design seemed like these levels were part of a different storyline altogether from the previous maps which look to all have seperate storylines even tho narrative wasnt given.
FM_map6 was the hardest at the end with the epic battle between 3 gunships & a strider I re-loaded my save game several times when I finally got off I enjoyed the further in maps.
FM_map10 however when you load up the map seperately you get guns but when you play through in order you lose them.
FM_map9 I got lost in the water current tunnel but a later look at the walthrough solved this.
The Author should be encourage to continue mapping
I can be reached through the Beta Testing section this map pack will go unrated.
Speckman, I was in the trenches in map 7, and I could move round in a square but hit ” invisible walls” and could see blue all around, also at one point an upside down street. Rest of the maps played with no bugs, not sure about map 10, found getting crystals with too many enemies (IMHO) a bit repetitive, other than that good work.
Had a crash to desktop when traveling from map7 to 8 during the loading process. “Solved” it by just manually loading map8 instead. Other than that it went smooth. Sadly, it lost its appeal a bit towards the end with less in-your-face action and hilarious moments with more spooky areas with flashes of dead Combine soldiers.
I loaded map 7 again, it ran fine up till the kitchen area, down the long hallway and thru the door. After the floor caved in is where I started getting FR drops after that, couldn’t go any further! The other maps loaded/ran fine, did find a seacret area I missed before! Tried lowering my graphics setting again, but to no avail!!
Me again. Thanks for the feedback. I’m not very experienced dealing with bugs but ill give it a shot.
To Fragmaster: I’m not sure why the weapons disappeared in map 10, it sounds like one of those strange things that happens and make no sense. I’m not sure how to fix it.
To Zeek: What you described sounds like you somehow glitched into a space that you could view outside of the level. I found one thing that might cause this and fixed it. I don’t know if it will work. And I was thinking that I overdid it a bit with enemies towards the end of the mod, but I decided to leave it be. I’ll keep that in mind.
To Loke: I moved the trigger for the next level change, that might fix the crash.
To AI: There is one glitch I encountered that may be causing the FR drop, it was when the table the crowbar was on gets stuck in mid air for some reason. It didn’t cause any problems for me but I fixed it nonetheless.
It sure seems like map 7 is giving a lot of problems. 1 out of 10 isn’t bad 🙂 I’ll give the updated maps to Phillip sometime later this week.
in Map10 while running from the dead body & killing the combine I used the Combine Pulse Rifle Alt-fire to vaporize the body but the Teleport trigger doesnt kick in & the fire kills me each time.
Do you have to be at a certain distance to kill the floating dead body? I tried mad dashing through only to be killed by combine & the other time normal it still caught up to me & killed me.
I’m at the same place as fragmaster. As far as I can tell, you can neither run past nor stop the body. As soon as I come out the other side of the teleport tunnel, I turn right around and go back through. The floating body apparently tries to follow me and gets stuck it sounds like. The door on the left opens, Combine soldiers come out, then fire suddenly kills me no matter what I do. Other than that, I’ve really enjoyed this mod. I first sat and played it for hours before stopping. I haven’t found a mod that captured my interest that way in a long time.
Great Lighting, Great gameplay,
Wow
Just finished playing it. Loved every minute! Literally, the first half had some really good fighing in it and then the second half was so scary (at least I thought it was and I’m a woos and love anything remotely scary)! And really good puzzles as well. Seriously good fun!
Played thru the maps again, on a different computer (my backup) no problem with map #7 at all!! I don’t know what the problem was, maybe my vid board is failing?? Got to the end, was a good workout!! Thanks!!! 🙂
If it’s not on the EP2 engine, I won’t be able to play it, ever. Just like I’ll never play HL2, EP1, or any mod for them ever again…
Why must I be plagued by a problem no one else gets, or are caring enough to help me with?
Me yet again. For the people having problems with the body in the last map; This is a part that really gave me trouble and doesn’t work sometimes. To be honest you don’t even have to vaporize the body, because source doesn’t recognize it. If you look at the screen shot where the body is being vaporized, shoot an alt fire into the wall on either side of it or into the ceiling, make sure to hit the brown area of the wall/ceiling. Thats actually where the trigger is. I relied on luck that the ball would bounce into it and I knew it would give people problems. Honestly, I think that the trigger for the teleport may be a glitch in itself. If that doesn’t work then I apologize. Its not something that can be fixed.
To Yochanan: there is a wall of death that follows the body, if the body gets hung up the wall wont. Just whip out the shotgun and blast through the combine as quickly as possible. Then shoot an ar2 alt fire into the wall like I said above.
I just finished it. I went into the portal to the other side and turned around immediately. I went right all the way down to the end of the hall and chucked a couple grenades at the Combine. The “wall” went left from the portal and went through the door that doesn’t open on the right. The body made it through the portal this time and got stuck in the wall near the hole. I just went right by, no fire this time. Also, after coming out of the portal, the game gets stuck every time and the sound stutters for about 5 seconds, then it’s fine.
I finished it but I tried something different
Instead of going down the corridors with the combine I backtracked to the fallen elevator & the Floating Body killed almost all the combine I noticed Spikes laid out on the floor with a Blue Square Cell which I grabbed & took back to the area the FB came from placed the Cell on the center well it Sat on the left side of the Altar.
Did I miss anything if I did it the right way or LOL my way.
One last thing when itried it again the framerates dropped & the music was stuttering very odd.
Whats the Red Crystal for?
Both of you sure had a lot of problems with that. It seems that both of you managed something that wasn’t supposed to happen. You didn’t miss much though. I’ll see if I can fix any of these problems. The cube siting beside the alter is another glitch that the game insists on no matter what. I even deleted the whole alter and remade it and it still happens. The red crystal is for another piller at the lake thats off to the side, not much point to it if there isn’t anything left to kill though.
I figured out what was causing so many glitches. The Long story is that in the final fight with the body, if you load a game on that map it causes one of the floating dead combine to glitch and flip into the trigger causing those other glitches. I fixed it so it shouldn’t happen again. You’ll notice that the dead combine are now chill’n on the floor. Also I added a trigger so as soon as you pick up an ar2, you’ll be teleported as soon as you get close to the body. So you wont get killed by the body after you get the ar2, leaving nothing to chance.
p.s. the red crystal is for a piller to the side of the lake, not much point if theres nothing left to kill
I had no problem with a map loading, but the frame-rates slowed down in map 7, and especially in the final one after retreating back through the portal. Despite a few bugs, it’s still a fun map-pack with lots of challenging combat and some good ideas. All in all a very interesting first effort from a talented mapper–keep up the good work!
Really enjoyed it: the mine sequence, though short, was very atmospheric with great lighting. The only slight negative was right at the end – the floating body is strange and it’s not obvious that you’re supposed to zap it. Including a walkthrough with the mod was very thoughtful though and got me through that bit.
I played through this before the updated version, without any glitches, though my PC isn’t especially well endowed….and thoroughly enjoyed it, good stuff! Is the newer version significantly different?I have to admit I didn’t find a red crystal, but did find a white & blue sparkly squarish thing that didn’t seem to fit anywhere in the temple/pillar/lake place, I tried dropping it in the middle altar-like thingy, but somehow still made it through to the end……? Did I miss something? As for the floating body, what a cool and original idea, if you out run it, and kill everything in your way it’s possible to get through, except, perhaps the first time it appears when you get teleported somewhere…I had absolutely no idea that you could kill it as everytime I tried to I died instead….
If this map pack is your first attempt then keep up the good work, such a promising start can only bode well for your next effort!
Definitely a Play it Now.
Wow! This has been fun!
I have had a great few hours playing this map pack. It reminded me of when I played HL2 for the first time. It had the same atmosphere and action, and I was left wanting more.
The airboat ride was as good as anything in the original game – well thought out, fun, and adrenaline inducing!!
I was most impressed with the way the designer used explosive barrels to trigger certain events like killing enemies in a creative and satisfying way, and for clearing obstacles. That was a brilliant touch! Bravo!
The puzzle elements, especially in the last map, were also well thought out. They were not too easy, and I’m sad to say I had to consult the walkthrough at that point to give me a clue – but this in no way spoiled the experience. My reaction was more “now that’s clever!” rather than feeling disappointed by having to get hints.
In parts, the whole design reminded me of the original game, and that pleased me greatly. Having played HL2, plus Episode 1 & 2, I still wanted more from the game, and this collection of maps did the trick.
Totally enjoyable – full marks to the designer. I look forward to playing more of your maps.
back tracked at the body in map ten and waited afew secs the fire didnt kill me ,then went on .
as pp likes to do , go back and look around theres alot you may have missed(some fightsmight need all your attention:)
Wow, what a ride this MOD is! Starting off small, it improves at every turn!
GREAT levels, some puzzles, this is well worth playing. 5 stars!
Awesome maps! Good puzzles and fights. Not too easy to solve or kill enemy. Although could use more attention on rooms and streets, they were bit too empty. Too clean. Got better towards the end though. But otherwise great fun. Keep on mapping dude! I know we will see more good stuff from you.
Got stuck where that body floated and killed everything. Tried to hide and run and everything. 😀 SO I thought it was last map and not even suppposed to be able to survive.. so I didnt continue… but seems there is more to go.
Ok first off, I enjoyed this map pack, large sections of which just raced by whilst I was fully immersed in the gameplay and action all-round, great stuff. For me the early and mid maps were the best, this was typical HL2 fare encounters and fun at its most enjoyable. The later maps whilst containing great gameplay with loads of content was a bit off-beat at times, this however never bothered me as much as the disjointed jumping from sequence to sequence without clear link or thread. I think I got to the end seen without cheat but must own-up to referring to the walkthrough for parts of map 10, but don’t think a can beat the end scene without a cheat.
I great set of maps containing hours of fun for me, will done mister author lots of unique work and ideas went into this one. Oh yes, more please.
DeadMeat, if you are talking about the first scene that the floating body appears then you have a fair bit more to do. See the walkthrough to beat the first floating body sequence.
This is positively brilliant and I rate it as high as possible. The only problems were a few video freezes on loading (map 8? forgot) and the annoying need to have to refer to the readme about 4 times in order to proceed. I particularly liked the map with large building with the 3 gunships and strider at the end. When things got ‘science fiction” it lost a bit of the interest for me, but to each his/her own. Many thanks and really looking forward to your next project!
Quick question – Do I need to download all three files, namely
1) UPDATED MAPPACK – (46.40Mb)
2) UPDATED MAPS (Map 7 and 10) – (10.81Mb)
3) Original Release Download Mirrors (46.14Mb)
in order to play this mod?
No sir. Just download number one: The Updated mappack. That is the latest version.
I made maps 7 and 10 available separately to save previous downloaders the inconvenience of having to downlaod everything again.
Be sure to return to comment on the mappack when finished.
Just finished this mod and it took me alot longer then it needed to. I think a few others have already commented on the confusion of chapter 10. This needs to be explained easier. More hints as to what the player is supposed to do would be really good.
The gathering of the crystal was a nice touch but to know where to go and where to place them all was asking too much of the adverage player imo. There should be some kind of information made available to the player to show how to proceed. The first half of the game was pretty much like any other hl mod. Easy to follow. Just chase the enemiy and your usually where you need to be for the next map. In this case I found myself walking all over 3 floors of office buildings and killing everything in site when actually all I needed to do was make it to the 3rd. floor and beat the enemy there.
I did have trouble with it not loading map 9 from 8. I had to start 9 from the console. I was not able to finish chapter 7. I went from inside the drain tunnels to a room and a door. When I opened the door there was a blurr. I could not go throught it so I had to skip to chapter 8.
There was not enough weapons and ammo I don’t think in the ealier chapters. I found myself fighting off hourds of antlions and zombies with nothing but a crowbar.. Especially in chapter 8, it was hard to take on that many enemies with so little weapons.
Other then that I liked it. Fix a few bugs, add more guns and some text to aid the player and it’s a fine game-thanks
A fantastic map pack! Despite being without a background story, the maps flow together very well and it becomes especially fun in later maps. From supernatural sewers, to striders destroying condos, to flying corpses decimating squads of combine, it’s all worth the download…
Especially the flying corpse.
Well, I’ll offer a slightly dissenting voice on this mod. A few early annoyances (stacking boxes, for one) led to some routine gameplay. And then, as acknowledged by the author in the walkthrough, the game stops making sense (teleporting from one unrelated scene to another).
On the upside, it is imaginative and the enemies and combat situations are quite varied.
All in all, a good timewaster but there are other mods with lower rankings that, imho, surpass this one.
Having said that, I would also encourage Justin to keep mapping. A linear story and a little more attention to detail might result in producing something exceptional.
I had a lot of fun playing this mappack, especially map 10 because I happen to enjoy puzzles in a game. The crystals and the glowing box had me stumped for awhile!
Nice work and keep it up.
Have a nice day!
The first part of the mod is a classical combine killing but it’s very amazing. I rarely played a so fun mod. The second part when you are transported to an hunted place make a big break in the gameplay, but is interesting. Fight the Death herself !
The mod started off really strong and I loved it so much. As I got to the zombie part I felt a little differently. Collecting the jems with dozens of zombies chasing you is frustrating and it lowered my fps. Although, I loved running from the boss zombie and finally fighting it at the end. First half of the mod gets a 9/10, the second half gets a 7.5/10. GOOD JOB FOR MAKING A GREAT MOD.
Can’t someone make these large maps into a mod. I hate fiddling with cutting and pasting into this folder and that.
Ill upload one to filefront tonight and post the link here.I’m testing it right now.
LOL-Cutting and pasting? I have played just about every mod and map pack on PP and have never had to cut and paste anything. Why are you not just clicking on the downloaded file and sending the right files to the area stated in the installion instructions.?-Gnosis, it’s really easy to move these files. Just read the instructions above. If you have any trouble I’ll be glad to help.
I don’t think thats the point.I myself hate maps on thier own.I like to see what I have installed listed in the menu.this way if I forget a map name I don’t have to go through the maps folder looking for a name.
Yea, but the way I see it , these authors are taking a year or more to make some very incredible free games and if it takes me an extra 5 minutes to install it I don’t mind. I also don’t load maps that are less then 5 mb as I don’t like that short of game, but that’s my preference.
I only tested upto map 7.Getting tired so thought I should upload it before I fell asleep lol.
http://files.filefront.com/hl2+sp+forward+motion+modrar/;13094187;/fileinfo.html
I loved the first six maps. Seven and eight were good, but a little confusing. I got so fed up with nine that I had to cheat at the very end to get across the bridge. By then I wasn’t interested in playing map 10.
Walkthrough link broken.
Fixed the walkthrough link. Sorry about that.
For a simple collection of maps this is great. The gameplay is very balanced, even if the last level is somewhat on the hard side.. It’s not the most beautiful mod I’ve seen, but still a very pleasant surprise… The “jumping around” levels towards the end are a great ides – finally a way to make encounters with zombies or soldiers more thrilling…
The mapping isn’t the best. In fact, it really sucks at the beginning. But it’s amazing at how much the creator increased his skills and also the story is interesting. This mod made me jump far more often than Ravenholm did. I’m not the spooky-type-lover. But yeah, I was scared at some points. Especially when I really wasn’t sure “What the HECK is going on here?” 😀
Very good mappack!
Great collection of maps with great gameplay combat.
The first 7 maps are very good and culminate with a multiple boss battle. The map pack should have stopped there (as I’m sure it did when I played it a couple of years ago).
The remaining maps are previously issued separate maps and probably added as bonus levels as they have nothing to do with the previous maps. The bonus levels are pretty dire.
Oh jaspper I hope u read this in heaven, I really think FM, mappack is actually 2 mods in one, one just realistic into the CMB world, and the second part is a completly different mod,and each part it could be even called different, like City “#” uprise, and “sinester road” or something like that, here in 2011 I hope someone would retake this work and polish it into a propper or 2 propper mods.
Yep I reckon he read it. theres no way hes not keeping his eye on the pp site. im doing it for him anyway just in case. havent managed to download any games yet, he used to do it for me, sure I will get there eventually.
scraps (mrs jasper)
I really enjoyed this map pack. The thing that bothered me the most about it is that it wasn’t released as a full mod. Since I’ve finally jumped into the crazy world of Source Modding, I’m actually in the process of doing just that. Right now I have the most rudimentary system set up. It allows me to start a new game, save, load, and seems to have the chapter select system working.
I seriously feel that when a map pack takes on the scale that Forward Motion does, it deserves its own Mod, if only so that other people on steam can see when you’re playing it.
So Speckman, if you read this, let me know if you’d be interested in this being done. I’ve only put in the basics for my own convenience right now, but I’d be happy to try to polish it up further.
wow, I already ran into the first game crashing bug caused by trying to run the map pack out of a mod. Okay, fine, so I have a long way to go before this is nearly polished enough to work as a standalone mod.
I still think it deserves it.
I’m loving this mod so far, I’m at the Ravenholm or whatever level, so many nicely made scripted sequences, this has a great potential, even though the mapping isn’t like Research and Development or Mission Improbable, It’s still fine and promising. I give it a Personal Favorite.
Why don’t you register, login and use the recommendation images?
I know that there are better mods out there, but I really like this one. Especially second part (scary stuff) – love it!
Grey Acumen – I hope you’ll finish your work on this one 😉
Definitely play this one.
I think it should have been separated into two map packs (or two mods). The multi-boss battle was really well done. The last maps were also well done, but I ran into a few problems (which is probably why I didn’t give it a PIN).
The trigger for map 8 didn’t work, so I loaded it manually and when I got onto the catwalk it crashed. Reboot, reload, freeze. Reboot, reload earlier save, freeze. I reloaded from the map 6 boss battle (gee, this time the Strider joined in) and then things went fine.
And in map 10, when you get the last two crystals, the crystal for one of the walls was wrong (both shape and color). I reloaded an earlier save from the lake, and went back in and the crystal was the right one.
The only way I finished the very last section was because of the walkthrough. I would not have known what to do in the room with all the rotating spikes because I wasn’t even given time to look around before I was attacked. (Maybe better players than I didn’t have this problem.)
Other than my problems (and the shooting gallery in the first part), this was really well done. Some parts were very creative, and overall it was fun to play.
same here. I want to see this debugged,It is well done otherwise. Looks good runs smoothly bar the errors, but the errors are not going to stop me.. loading the maps manually.
Oh yea WELL done mod here.. it would be nice to see it debugged, but I’ll play it again anyway until that day comes.
Actually I think many gamers found troubles on this one, because is really hard at some points especially when that convulsed burnt skkined bodie is chasing u all in great part of the maps and u just can’t escape, that’s a really pain in the butt.
This looks hellafun. brb after..(few….hours,days, weeks?..lol)
Had ONE error problem but that was bypassed by manually loading the map.. Get ready for some heavy duty fighting or death..lol… IT looks good and the only choppy part was in the sewer in the hallway fire, passed that it smoothed back out again.
I say TEAR IT UP! If you like heavy warefare..this is your mod
You must be kidding. This was annyoing. It was a bunch of cubes all togheter with some npcs and props. I thought it was fullbright at the beggining e_e
Epic mappack with a crescendo really well-done. It’s too bad there is no “story” as there are many narrative elements.
The action sequences are over-the-top and a giant explosion carnival, and the “mystic” sequence are terrifying, the concept of this recurring floating body is a real innovation.
Well, I think I could replay this mod times and times again. Magnificent work!
I’m getting a weird texture error message when loading from map2 to map3…
I have counted nearly 100 ERROR red messages on thèse maps…
I thought this was done deliberatly… Isn’t it? Because it only occurs during the “mystic world” phases…
yeah, I got a lot of red “ERROR” on the later maps too. I think it might have to do with the may 2010 update ? I don’t remember any of this and I played these maps plenty of time
I don’t remember any errors like that. I’m pretty sure it was the update that caused this.
Oh really? The other problem is that map 3 is always crashing with a message “bad texture extent” something like that, I tried to change the resolution of the screen but to no avail.
However, this strange “ERROR”” messages are not annoying : we can past throught them, they don’t block enemies or bullets. They are just “here”… but in 3D and human-size 🙂
I get the same error on map 3. Game crashes back to Windows with an Engine Error message that says: Bad surface extents on texture nature/blenddirtgrass001a
Anyone know how to fix this? or is it even worth bothering?
What happened to this mappack? all I get is “not found” pages when trying to download????
Okay, working downloads, now.
Thanks!!, been wanting to play this
This mod bugged up for me on more than one ocassion. I also had the issue with the giant red “error” messaging, and the antlion guard model was also bugged for me. I didn’t really like where the maps went after about map 7, and it mainly confused me. The
floating bodies
made no sense, and just looked like an attempt at using the models when they didn’t really work. I definitely liked the first few maps the best, in particular the watercraft scenes were very fun. The walls and rooms on the first few maps looked a bit plain, and you can see where the author got better as he went along. This map is worth a go for the first few levels, but after that it just got confusing and buggy for me, which left me with a bad feeling to end it.
Well there’s only one word to describe this mappack: HALLUCINATING!!!!!, is a twisted hardwork trip between a hopless world under the combine rule and dark misterious dead kingdom of fantasy. I really don’t know why this stayed only in the mappack category and the developer didn’t transformed it into a propper mod, that would be really better instead charging the maps.
Also in another point, I experienced difficulties in map 4, and 8 regarding to some textures problem, but I think is a little problem if we ponder that, this is from 2008! and now is 2011, so with all the steam updates issues I think is allright, also the part in the airboat is really cool and so well designed. I have the feeling this mappack is similar to the one i’ve recently played, which name is Freeman’s Flight, I mean the goal is combat more and figure out what happened less, so is this a kind of mod like that.
I recomend play it because maybe this is a really strong recommended classic here on PP, so yes I think u must play it, despiting the fact that in some parts this mod is so freakin hard, especially at the ending parts (u’ll see) and thet is a mappack and not a propper mod itself, I mean that u install it on steam and appears in the gamelist.
When loading map 3 I get the error message: “Bad surface extents on texture nature/blenddirtgrass001a” and the game crashes. Does anyone know what that means?
Map 1 was a bit unimpressive but it started getting much better in map 2 with the airboat.
I’ve just been told about a way to get this mod working:
– Install SMod Redux version 8.
– Follow these steps on how to fix the Smod redux.
– launch the mod, who is a build of the “old” HL2 engine.
– and then launch the maps of the mappacks!
I don’t know if this works or not, as I haven’t tried it.
An easier way to avoid the map 3 error “Bad surface extents on texture nature/blenddirtgrass001a” :
– Install the mod Lost Coast (if you didn’t already)
– put the .bsp files in the folder …/SteamApps/YourLogin/half-life 2 lostcoast/lostcoast/maps
and the .aim files in the folder …/SteamApps/YourLogin/half-life 2 lostcoast/lostcoast/maps/graphs
– start the mod with the option -console
– map FM_map3
Enjoy it
Wow for a 4 and a half year map pack, this still stands pretty good. It’s a lot of fun to play through all the maps, or at least those that work.. I also loved the airboat section, it’s hard to make a long good chase like that and to make it really fun on top of it. Too bad map 2 and/or 3 crashed on me, as well as 8 and 9. But I would call map 4 as a chaseville entry, map 5 was hellafun, 6 would go into the trapville/destroyville category, while the last ones continue the horror mood with new mechanics, not just puzzles.
Oh when I first saw 3 gunships and a strider all in one place I thought lol such overkill but it’s really not, there’s plenty of room to get cover or walk about for more health, that whole scene was intense and such a great ending to it.
It’s really good for a few hours on a Sunday noon, I just wish the author would get back to it and fix the crashes and the huge error signs 😀
Playing post SteamPipe, I experienced all the same errors mentioned above. Map 3 and map 9 both crash the game and cannot be loaded at all. Noclip is also required at some points, like getting past a metal gate that won’t open properly near the start.
This feels like a mod of two halves. The first is a familiar Half-Life 2 scenario in a city and canal environment. The graphics are very basic at points but improve as the mod goes on. It is clear however that the gameplay is paramount here. There were two highlights to this section, a thrilling airboat chase and a massive boss battle fighting several gunships and striders across a huge apartment building. Getting to the end of this section I was really enjoying the mod; it felt inventive and fun.
The second half is a very generic horror themed mod. I never felt scared though, more frustrated at the constant teleporting into different environments. It’s a shame because the mapping quality improves a lot and there are some potentially good enemy encounters. Perhaps part of the problem is that I’ve seen a lot of other mods do the same thing, maybe it was more unique at the time of release.
As a whole it’s hard to give Forward Motion a high recommendation but some of it is really fantastic, just let down by a disappointing second part.

Forward Motion is a mappack of ten maps, and I’m gonna review all the maps seperately.
Map 1
First thing you do is break out of a building and solve some puzzles, which are pretty fun to do. Then there’s a stroll through a City 17-esque area and some harmless metrocops. In the last part, you travel through an area filled with metrocops/manhacks and breakable buildings. There’s even a mounted gun to shoot them with. Good fun. My only complaint is that at one point the ground is destroyed beneath you. Nothing is wrong with this apart from that the creators decided it would be a good idea to make it ear-splodingly loud.
Map 2
An airboat section. Very easy but fun nonetheless. There’s a narrow tube in one part that reminds me of those waterslides in real life. My favourite part of this map is crashing through a window of a building, running over a metrocop and leaving while the building exploded.
Map 3
Unfortunately I can’t play map 3. Whenever I try it brings up an error.
Map 4
I LOVE this map! Tons of fun with the airboat with Combine to run over, awesome jumps to make that make you look cool, another waterslidey section and even a puzzle! An easy puzzle but a puzzle nonetheless! There’s also a part where Combine are standing on a large wooden structure and if you run over the support beams they fall. It’s very entertaining. Great map!
Map 5
It starts by giving you a bunch of weapons, then you have to fight through some Combine in a glass building. There’s an APC as well but when I killed it the game crashed. There’s a gunship fight here where you have to use SMG grenades instead of rockets (I think that’s how you’re supposed to since I never found a rocket launcher). Pretty cool battle. Them you go in an apartment building and a Strider attacks. Again, you have to kill it with SMG grenades. Cool concept still, but I don’t think it works as well here because you have to comtinuously shoot it or it will use its huge beam cannon and kill you in one hit mif you have low enough health (which I did) since there’s no cover in the room. It blows up half the building though so that’s cool. You have to fight more Combine throughout the building which is pretty fun. There’s a mean but funny trick they pull at one point where you open a door and a zombie throws an explosive barrel at you. The map ends with another Combine duel as well as an APC that you actually CAN destroy. Great map overall.
Map 6
I like this map a lot. It’s nonlinear and has many places to explore and many combine to kill. When you get to the roof of a certain building, a gunship comes in qnd goes behind a building. I couldn’t get it out of the building but it’s not important. There’s two APCs to destroy, but the main highlight of the map is a battle with three gunships and a Strider. All at once. Ludicrous, yes, but fun. It wasn’t as hard as it sounds for me though since the Strider somehow got stuck behind a building where I could hit him but he couldn’t hit me. A buggy but fun map overall.
Map 7
This has nothing to do with the previous levels and is essentially an HL2 horror map. Sorry to say but it’s not very good. It glitched the first time I played it; the Strider wouldn’t shoot his laser and just kept shooting at the ground so I had to restart. Other than that, it just kind of throws stuff at your face. The puzzles were way too cryptic as well. How was I supposed to see that the fuse box was sparking so that an explosive barrel placed next to it would blow up the fence? Or see that a flaming zombie just crashed through the wall so I have to place a box and jump on it to get to a cave? Also, the forest part was pointless and, for me, filled with bright red errors. Also it had an invisible fast zombie in it. That’s not scary, it’s annoying. Overall, this is a mediocre map that’s too dark.
Map 8
What was that thing that happened with the dead Combine? I just don’t get it. Also, more errors outside. I don’t know if this is just me or if it always happens but it looks rather silly. Other than that, this map is cool. Unlike the previous, this is actually a pretty good horror map. It had some pretty cool scenes, like when the flaming fast zombie went all Arch-Vile on an APC and blew it up. The forest is back but it has more of a purpose since there’s a part in it where a combine is supposed to walk to a grave and die, then you get a gem-like thing to put on a pedestal. Unfortunately this didn’t work for me and I had to noclip in and kill the Combine to beat the map. That’s the problem with this map, its stability. It crashed on me eleven times (yes I counted). It’s good, but unstable.
Map 9
Starts off a mines map with a horroristic touch. I really love the horror hallucination part in this one. It starts off with a water tunnel that does a really weird, confusing and claustrophobic thing, which is a pretty good idea. Then you go to the surface and fight some antlions and Combine. There is one thing to complain about. That’s the flying dead bodies. They’re not scary. They just made me laugh. And the last one is really hard and annoying to dodge. Overall, it’s an alright map with a cool horror sequence.
Map 10
The final map. Has another forest sequence with a bunch of zombies and an Antlion Guard. Then you reappear in the place you were and there’s a guhe shootout with a ton of Combine. The corpse appears again and there’s supposed to be some big final boss with the floating corpse and then you end the game and it’s all very satisfying but it just won’t work for me. Overall a lackluster map.
I would say that maps 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 are worth playing. I don’t know about 3 and 7, 8, 9 and 10 were boring and tedious. If I could give one mappack two ratings, Play It Now for the first half and Think Twice for the second.

I’m not sure about this one. It has some cool ideas here and there, but also feels really unpolished sometimes or gimmicky. And as others already mentioned it has bugs, some maps crash. It still is fun though most of the time, but you won’t miss anything special if you skip this.

It would be nice if there was a walkthrough vid for this updated version. I didn’t see one at all on youtube.

Hello. I am Seaal Mid.
I have spent about a month over many hours and hours refining my skills in using Hammer by converting Forward Motion to the HL2: Update mod. As some of you who played this from near the very beginning may know, this mappack has not aged well. Many things have broken throughout HL2’s updates. I deem this mappack a classic in my heart and it saddened me that a mappack in the hall of fame was so broken now with no fix in sight. So I fixed it to the best of my abilities.
But, I did this without permission. I tried looking quite a bit, but couldn’t find out how to contact SneakySpeckman. So it is my hope is that posting this here may get the attention of him so that you, SneakySpeckman, can tell me if it is okay to release these edited maps. Or someone else can ask him for me. I put a lot of effort into this, so hopefully it’s fine, but I understand if it isn’t. I should’ve asked first before pursuing this project, but honestly, I wasn’t sure I could pull it off at first, so I didn’t want to ask, only for it to turn out it was out of my capabilities. But I was able to do it.
I have two whole .txt files listing the changes I made. One simply lists the changes. The other lists the changes along with commentary for a lot of the changes. I not only fixed a lot of things but also added stuff I felt slightly improved the maps (my excuse for adding extra stuff is that I wanted to practice Hammer a bit more). Though, I didn’t add things that completely changed any of the levels because I wanted them to remain in the image that SneakySpeckman intended them to be.
One last thing I must mention. I said I converted the mappack to HL2: Update. It is my belief that I did indeed, but I did not test these maps on HL2: Update itself. I rather tested them on the MMod version of HL2: Update. In fact, I have two versions of my edited version of Forward Motion. One is just the mappack which you can install into the “custom” folder in HL2: Update. The other is a mod for the MMod version of HL2: Update which you install into “sourcemods”. It comes complete with backgrounds made specifically for Forward Motion and chapter selects (same excuse: practice). I wanted to make it authentic. I have tested these maps a thousand times over and I’m very tired now and do not have the strength to do more tests on HL2: Update itself. It is also my hope that if I can release these maps, that people will report back to me if the maps work as intended for HL2: Update.
For now while I wait to see if it is okay to release the maps here, I will post pastebins containing the contents of the .txt files I mentioned.

As what SneakySpeckman asked for upon uploading his mappack, I too would appreciate any criticism you can give me about any changes I made. I also hope I didn’t waste my time and somewhere in the outskirts of the internet, someone (or SneakySpeckman himself) already did what I did.
A while back, in April 2018, Phillip and I contacted SneakySpeckman to get access to the source VMFs of Forward Motion as I had in mind to get it running under the Source SDK 2013 SP. However we didn’t receive a reply.
I do have their e-mail address at hand still, but it could very well be outdated at this point. Also for obvious reasons I’m not going to post it publicly out here. On my RTSL profile you have ways to contact me so I could tell you in private.
It’s worth giving it a shot to mail him again but I wouldn’t be surprised if nothing comes out of it.
Kay I sent you a message on your Steam profile.
SneakySpeckman gave me the go ahead. So here you all go. Hope you enjoy and hope it is satisfactory. Please tell me of anything I should change.

Includes both the mappack version for HL2: Update and the mod version for HL2: Update MMod. There are instructions on how to install both in their respective folders in the .zip file. The changes/fixes and changes/fixes w/ commentary are included in .txt files in the .zip file as well.
Here are the pastebins again if any of you want to look at the changes before downloading.

btw I said HL2: Update, but Koneko is informing me it also seems to work on default HL2, so just use whichever you prefer.
And lastly, here’s an update log as I change/fix stuff according to people’s feedback.

That’s great, thank you for this.
Forward Motion is one of the mod’s I like the most, it has probably the best Airboat level ever made, but sadly the mappack was broken as hell because of the numerous updates.
I’m really glad some people continue to save some old projects.
You’re welcome 🙂
First area is difficult. I killed about 6 combine with no weapon drop. Died so I pulled up the second map from the console. Ran for a bit and crashed. Give it a try. From what I had seen, it has potential.
