Factory Defense

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

14th March 2009

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

A simple but pretty outdoor arena map. There actually seems to be a number of kills required before the map ends, although I couldn’t tell you exactly how many.

  1. Phillip says Maybe

It’s hard to get too enthusiastic about arena maps unless they offer something new and intersting and unfortuantely this one doesn’t. Well, that’s not exactly true, because this one is much prettier than most other arena maps. In fact the map should have kept making it larger and have different entry points for the enemies.

After about 10 minutes I opened the console and cheated with noclip. Normally I don’t mention this in my reviews but you can see in image 09 something under the map that looks strange. I have no idea what it is but maybe it will be used for a later version. There’s also the sound of a stream in one part of the map.

So, back to the real map. Like arena maps? Play it. Otherwise only play it if you have ten minutes free and want to kill some zombies.

Lastly, I saw lots of saw blades but didn’t find a gravity gun, can you?

Super very lastly, I removed the images from the original file because who wants to see screenshots with different weapons of a map you are about to play?

Extra very super ultimately very lastly. Thanks for reading, bye.

It’s a shame that it’s just an arena map. From ground level, it’s actually rather pleasant to look at.

This is actually a pretty cool game. The way it think it works is you have to survive and keep your fellow combine guys alive too (I think). I got to the end only keeping one alive, so when it unlocked achievement menu it said I was only 50% done. I guess I have to play again and save all 4 guys. Or do I just play again with 50% already recorded. I’m not sure. Anyway if you get 100% achievement it unlocked 21 other little games.

I found that the best way to play if to forget about using your own weapons and just grab the automatic tripod machine-gun. Unfortunately I did find any gravity gun.

  4. I just replayed it and changed my tactics. I moved the auto-turret and simply defended that and the two soldiers on the roof. When I finished I had unlocked the “Little Rocket Man” achievement!

I also found the rocket launcher, which I didn’t the first time.

  5. Maybe?

It’s not bad but not great either. As Phillip said, it looks a lot better than most other arena maps. There were several flaws in the visuals; things like oddly-used textures (the door frames in screenshot 1 for example) but generally it was pretty good.

It was possible to use barrels to climb on to the roof of one of the buildings which revealed the ugly level exterior. This was worsened by the fact that there were ammo crates on said roof, practically encouraging you to go and see this error.

The combat was quite fun at first but got repetitive pretty quickly. Once the music ended I got bored of the sound of the turret constantly shooting the same zombies. It would be nice to have more variation in the enemy patterns, and perhaps allies would only appear after a certain time or something.

I was also confused as to the amount of saw blades and other “physics weapons” lying around, yet no Gravity Gun.

Yesterday I said this was pretty cool mod. Now I’d give it a “maybe” too.

I’ve played it again from start 4 times and cannot get beyond 50% on achievement. Nevertheless the “unlocked” menu gives the impression that some of the extra games should be accessed at this point. But nothing happens. I now think the extra games aren’t accessible outside a russian version of ep2. If the maker had provided a read me file, it would clarify things alot.

I think this is a special russian mod for russian hl2 ep2 gamers. When you go over to FPS Banana the screen shots clearly show words in russian only: http://www.fpsbanana.com/maps/screens/84774

Also it show the handgun to be a Desert Eagle, not a Glock. A special shotgun, not the normal one. A pipe for breaking stuff open – on my mod there clearly isn’t one present – nor a gravity gun, which surely is suppose to be there given all the propane tanks and saw-blades laying around.

    1. Yes, I noticed the different weapons, but often with screenshots from FPS Banana, the authors have all sorts of customizations running, which is one reason I don’t use anybody else’s screenshots.

  7. Oh, I also forgot to mention the horrible invisible wall near the zombie spawn area. You have been warned!

  8. Maybe?

I found that I could steal a second turret from one of the roof positions.. that made things a good deal easier. I was never told what my success rate was. I saw the “mapped by” message, then a black screen with the incessant turret fire. Might be worth a few quick plays, but nothing serious here.

  9. Think Twice

After playing a few times I got disappointed that I couldn’t find a crow bar or gravity gun. Then I read the comments and assumed there weren’t any. I never even thought of getting on the roof is there any advantage to it? I fought until there was no ammo left and got the unlocked message but couldn’t do anything. I kept thinking during play that something would happen while killing everything in sight like stumble across the gravity gun as a reward. But nothing ever happened. If you like killing with nothing else to do this map is for you. It’s not my cup of tea. I would not play this map if I knew what I know now. If I missed something good during play I hope you will let me know. The map did appear well made but I can only rate it 2 stars. If there were some secrets in the game we were supposed to uncover to add some interest to it I would boost my ratings to 3 or 4 stars depending on how many were there to find.

    Think Twice

I think it was a bit too easy, there were so much combine to help you, there should be waves of zomie hords. And it unlockt the little rocket man atchievment, which I didnt like course I was going to achive it in ep2 and almost done. although it was visually appealing.

    Play It Later

I personally liked this map a lot, due to the nice attention to details. This was one of the best arena maps I have ever seen. The reason this map does not get 5 stars, is due to the small playing field and lack of ammo.

  12. Maybe?

I think this might be based on time rather than number of enemies killed.

I finished, then reloaded a save, disabled the AI and noclipped around. I was looking for any supplies I might have missed, or the gravity gun, and I ended up getting the closing music & black screen again. No zombies were killed in that time.

First complaint: I don’t like having to open supply crates with potentially precious ammo. At least give me a crowbar (or the gravity gun it looked like I was supposed to have).

And don’t give me an Achievement I didn’t earn. I don’t know if I would ever have gone through the trouble of getting Little Rocket Man or not, but I sure as heck don’t deserve it for surviving a small arena map with a small number of enemies… (If I’d made it through Muripo without cheats maybe that should count… Kidding.)

Anyway, play it if you like arena maps. It’s not bad even if you don’t particularly like arena maps–it’s about 5-10 minutes worth of play.

  13. Avoid It!

Well the one good thing I can say about this is that it is very, very pretty. Beautiful, even. I feel like maybe the map was made first, then the gameplay. Sometimes this works out, but if it’s the case here, it did not.

I didn’t finish the map so I don’t know if there’s a “crescendo” or anything, but for seven minutes I waited around killing the same three enemies coming from the same three spots. Zombie, zombine, fast zombie. Also, there are many saws but no gravity gun, and there is also no crowbar so if you want to open supply crates you have to shoot them. In other words, you have to spend ammo so you can have more ammo.

Also, it apparently gives you the “Little Rocket Man” achievement when you finish it, which, in my opinion, is incredibly stupid. I plan on getting that next time I play Episode Two, so I’m glad I didn’t finish this one.

  14. Maybe?

Yeah it’s okay and the faults have already been mentioned, like the lacking crowbar or gravgun but you know what? I liked this. It has a good co-op feel to it and is staged well without ever being OTT. It would have been nice to have the option to camp up high somewhere for a few kills… like those soldiers! Anyhow, my game ended when I moved the turret. Bit odd and perhaps a coincidence but I can’t complain. 10 mins of fun! 🙂

  15. Maybe?

It’s just a small arena map. Mapping isn’t that bad, nothing special.
