As Month Python used to say, “And Now for Something Completely Different!”
This map has NO combat. There are NO puzzles.
So why the heck have I added it then? Because it’s fun, that’s why.
Take a Koke bottle into space. Really.
Go enjoy it.
It’s time for
Experimental Fuel is a map I made for a HL2World.com mapping competition. The challenge was to design a rocket launch. It was a nice project to work on and allowed for some creativity.
You are working with a team of scientists to test new rocket designs and experimental fuel types. So this is a little bit different from a regular rocket. You don’t have much money to work with, so rocket testing is done right in your backyard.
Understanding the Diet Coke and Mentos reaction is a prerequisite to playing this.

Those screenshots are seriously nuts! Can’t wait to take a look at this map. Downloading now…
Interesting concept! Seriously annoying “music?” in the Diet Coke and Mentos video link above!
OK, so failing any instructions in the readme…., I put the bsp in the usual place, half-life 2, hl2, maps. Nothing recognized in console – bmxxx, expxxx or whatever. What to do?
only 2 minutes long but I hope it gives others idea’s for a mod.
I’ve fuelled the rocket and gone up the tower… now what? Can’t believe I’m stuck! Help me, somebody!
BTW I’m getting an AI Disabled message (maybe that’s why I can’t complete the map?). How does one overcome this, I recall reading a solution in another thread somewhere on this site.
I managed to answer my own question – found the answer to the AI Disable thing on a forum. Launch the console and enter: ai_disable 0
I believe this is just a temporary solution, although it was enough for me to finish this map, which is well worth a download.
It’s very . . . refreshing!
glad you enjoyed the map. In reponse to the AI issue, there is nothing in the map that would disable AI and no one else has reported this so I don’t think its map related. are you sure it wasn’t disabled before loading the map?
Hi, cold_blood3d_killa, thanks for a fun map. Most HL2 maps and mods I play run okay, but every now and again I install one that displays AI Disabled, and everyone in the map is standing around looking gormless! This map unfortunately was one of those maps. Why this happens I can’t even begin to guess.
i’m not sure anymore, because it’s quit some months back that I mapped with HL2 (have sp-mapped with cod2 and prey after it), and that makes that I forget HL2 mapping quick. still, as far as I can remember is that AI disabled problem caused by playing right after a compile. some editors give the option of compiling a map, and emidiatly after it it will load and play the map. even when this is possible you shouldn’t use it, because most of the times something goes wrong, with Hammer mapping it causes AI disabled problems.

I’ve just finished playing this map and I want to say how much fun it was. It’s obviously not a combat map but the creativity is excellent, along with the implementation.
Great work. IF you want five minutes of childlike wonder of going into space then this could be your answer.
Are you sure it’s in the folder? MIne is 17,939Kb How big is yours?
You should be using: “map bmg1_experimental_fuel.bsp” in the console.
Other than that I would suggest renaming it. Strangely it worked for me with another map!
Yes I have it in the folder, and its name is identical to yours, however the file size shows as 18,368,580……..?
I checked my file size for the .bsp file, I got 17.5mb, works fine, gotta say this was krazy, I’ve never been blasted into space in a koke bottle before!! Thanks for posting this Phillip!!
How do you start it in Single Player mode?
DOH! lol
Thanks in advance!
What a fun little story. Really different and only wish it was longer.
This is one of those fun short mods you should play at the end of a day of running and gunning.
Come on! That was silly and fun in equal measure.
Sure, it’s not the greatest map you will ever play but for creativity and style it rates quite highly.
Definitely worth taking a break for all the action and shooting.
I said MAYBE because not everybody likes these sorts of things, but I suspect most people will enjoy it.

I don’t normally like non-combat maps, but this was so unusual, simple and fun. Really enjoyable to me, however way too short.

Interesting and fun map to play without doubts! A short history and mod, still gave me some laughs while playing it. Definitely recommend to check this map out.
Another one that didn’t work with Gauge, said map not found.
OK little map here, there’s enough to entertain for a few minutes. It’s creative but a little predictable. I did like the follow-through at the end of the ride.

Damn, this is old. I remember playing this back in the day. Such a iconic idea that you will never forget playing it.
No much to add to what everyone else is saying. If the descriptions sounds fun, play it!
For me HL is mostly about combat, but for this one I will make the exception.
Great fun, just a little too short. Took me a while to discover the lever on the tanks, I suppose I was looking for a button to press but got there in the end. Interesting concept, I like things like this where there is something to do and not just all combat and puzzles.
Very simple but fun. Wish it was longer. Maybe the author should apply for a job at SpaceX
Hahaha, that was cool and fun at the same time!
I also never expected my peculiar rocket went that high!
I love to have a cold Coke right now!

lol that was something very different!! However, it’s far too short and kinda dumb but it’s also quite okay too… Sadly, there’s no replay value so I doubt it’s something anyone will keep to play again! The only thing that failed for me was that first lever which I didn’t see for ages!!!!
Going out to buy a Koke now…… Not!

Interesting.
I’ve seen this map everywhere I go. I finally played it and it was alright. I got really lost trying to find the button for the fuel tanks. Maybe put a sign or something.
The ending was pretty cool though.
Maybe play it if you really want to. It’s nothing crazy. No combat, or spooks or anything. Just a nice ride into space.
