E-Lab-orate

for Half-Life

18th March 2019

This old lab complex was already tricky to navigate. Now, with the facility on lock down and rapidly descending into chaos, the most direct routes are blocked and you will have to find alternate ways to reach the surface.

Author’s Notes

This is just my competition entry for [TWHL’s] 20th anniversary competition. I figured I might spend some extra time and give this a proper ending but it’s just not going to happen… 🙁

Special thanks to Jessie for the last minute playtest and feedback. <3

A short but sweet map. Liked the light mix of puzzle, gunplay and small rewards if the player decided backtracking was a thing they wanted to explore.
Got hung up for a moment when it came to the return trip to the crystal laser. I don’t know if anyone else would get stuck longer than I did. It took me a bit to realize what needed to be done, because the crystal was seemingly given greater visual importance over the actual object toward the solution.

  2. In my opinion, this is a very good map. Nice lighting, good sounds, great atmosphere. The battle is balanced, the rooms are rich in detail. I don’t know how many maps the author has made, but this map is a good job!

  3. Play It Later

This was a really good map and was very fun to play through. It’s one of those maps that is a win for me because of its simplicity; the plot is simple, the mapping, albeit really well done and a bit more modern, has a typical Black Mesa setting and the combat is just Xen creatures. There are also some puzzles here and there for variety, and they definitely make the player’s experience better. Its length (5-10 minutes) is identical for a map. The only real “complain” I have is the map’s abrupt ending.

Overall, if you’re looking for a great map to play and have some minutes to spare, then this is it.

    1. In “Identical” I actually wanted to write “just perfect”. I was looking for the right word but I didn’t find it. Oh well….

  4. Play It Later

It’s a decent but unspectacular little map. You are always short on ammo and health kits are hard to come by, so you need to be careful. It’s still kind of funny after all these years to see an office belonging to “G. Newell”

  5. Play It Later

A small but enjoyable little map. It looks pretty decent and has good gameplay.
There isn’t a lot to say about this map. It feels like it’s a part of a bigger map, with it’s abrupt ending. It’s very simple and will give you about 10 minutes of gameplay to pass the time with.
So yes, it’s worth a play, but don’t expect much.

  6. Play It Later

its a good mod is stil better than HDTF and again a good, well elaborate mod that kills the time if you have another more shorts mod to play.
if you asked me i will keep this for play later maybe when you are bored
soo yeah i’m bad at reviews and bad at english writting (probally)

  7. Maybe?

A very, very short level that literally takes 15 or less minutes to complete and only has a handful of enemies.

Not a bad map, not alot going on, but not alot to complain about either. Some vent crawling, lock smashing, button pressing and traversing to be had. I’d like to see more from this map maker as they show good potential for even bigger projects!

    Play It Later

Nice little map with a coherent layout.

    That’s it.

    Perfect for Play it Latter.

  9. Play It Later

It was a nice map. I liked it. Good job.

  10. Play It Later

Short but sweet, very good looking level with just the right amount of ammo, It doesn’t do anything ground-breaking but it’s still worth checking out if you’re looking for more of the same thing.

  11. Play It Now!

The map is short but except it’s play time and the abrupt ending everyhing is well balance between fignting and solving puzzle.
Also the scaling, the design and attention to detail was neat

I really like those short and sweet maps 🙂

  12. Play It Now!

Well-designed map! I like the puzzles, such as the part of filling the water and the part of using the laser device to go upward. When I re-visit the places some monsters appear so it doesn’t make the map boring. (I really like that if I return to the ‘water puzzle’ room after getting the crowbar some headcrabs appear.) The map gives me the guns or the ammo when I need them. I which there is a better ending, such as going into the portal or elevator and fading out.

  13. A very nice map. Could use more health. The ending was rather anti-climactic. I liked the puzzle solving aspects.

  14. Play It Now!

Has a super nice flow to it, cool puzzles as well!

I originally beat the map in about 13 minutes, but I was curious how quickly I could beat it. I was able to finish it in 4 minutes!

Really cool map. Nice environment to, good lighting and vibe. I would recommend it!

  15. Play It Later

    Nice little map.
