The mod is about a digger who is looking for an old shelter and on his search stumbles upon a secret base where everything has gone crazy. He soon realizes that he must destroy the base and the strange object that has caused all this trouble.
- Title: Dopusk 31
- File Name: hl1-sp-dopusk-31.7z
- Original File Name: Dopusk31.exe
- Size : 49.83Mb
- Author: Knazev I. S. AKA Knazev33
- Date Released: 11 October 2009
This mod was originally released with only the Russian titles. I contact somebody about downloading the mod and he was very helpful and I thought he was the author. Since his English was good, I asked if he could translate it into English for me. He agreed and then contacted the real author, who also agreed and I was sent the file.
I then checked it and edited some sentences to sound more natural. Some sentences were strange and I decide to play the mod to put them into context. The strange thing is that I certainly didn’t see all the text in the file and some text that appeared on the screen isn’t in the file!
So, any strange translations are entirely my fault, please accept my apologies!
I would like to thank the author and Sergio Malikoff for his translation.
In the version you download from PlanetPhillip the English version is default. Please send all corrections or suggestions to me and I will update the file eventually.
With so many screenshots, I thought some of you might want to jump them and go straight to the comments. That way you won’t see any spoilers!

This is a great mod and I really felt that I was back in Black Mesa, although that’s not where it is based. The author creates some great industrial areas and I enjoyed exploring all of them.
You’ll notice I only gave it a Play It Now! recommendation instead of a Personal Favourite because it has a number of issues. The first one is that it swings between too easy and too hard. Exploring the areas and finding enemies nicely placed is fun but then having to turn a corner and find a Garg standing there with little or no where to run is tough. I spent a long time on some sections purely because of that. Normally that formula is great but here is seemed wrong. I rarely felt a sense of accomplishment after beating a mini-boss – and I should! I just felt relief.
Another reason for no PF is that it’s a little buggy. Every time I feel into a liquid and died the game crashed. Couple that with the author love of walkways collapsing and it’s tough. In addition the level changes are not very good and I got stuck a few times there. Not only that but the actual location of those changes seemed very strange.
Considering this seems to be a solo project it’s an incredible piece of work and ignoring all my negative points above I had a great time. It took me at least 4 hours or more to play through, so there should be a few hours of fun for you.
There’s plenty of backtracking to find keys and set bombs, but you always feel as though you are progressing. As you probably saw I took a lot of screenshots. I did this because I just love those large areas and atmospheric corridors.
You’ll notice lots of tags associated with this mod and nearly all the non-human enemies from HL1 are here. By the way what’s the plural of Ichthyosaur?
To improve, I would make some of the action more balance and less spread out. Improve the level changes and dying bugs and this is definitely a Hall Of Fame, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a few HL1 lovers make it their PF.
5 Words Or Less Review
Perfect “fix” for BM Junkies!
Hi Phillip.
It was nice chatting with you on Steam’s chat client this afternoon, it’s the first time I’ve used it. As you probably have guessed I was not enjoying it, I really wanted to give this a good try but in the end the repetitiveness really got to me. As I said at the time I’d been playing it for a couple of hours on and off and I gave it about another hour. I probably won’t bother to finish it.
I hope you don’t mind me using a copy of the chat as it shows my thoughts at the time of playing rather than later.
PP Edit:
I have removed this section, as a private conversation in Steam should stay private. There was nothing said that I would say on the site, it’s just the principle. Bolx basically said that it was repetitive and in one point hard to understnad what to do without speaking Russian.
All in All I had nothing to do this afternoon so it passed some time between lunch and dinner.
I’m sure some will like Dopusk31, but my personal opinion is that the author tried to pad it out way to much, the old adage ” less is more” holds true for this one.
Hi Phillip.
I apologise if I have offended you, it was most certainly not my intention.
It was however, not only just the repetitiveness nor my lack of the Russian language. To find a pistol and shotgun at the beginning only to have them taken away before firing a shot in the game makes no sense in any language. The over use of tunnels, corridors and general wandering. It was around 15 minutes (possibly more) into the game before there was any combat. Dopusk31 as you’ve pointed out in your review needs more balance.
As a peace offering I’ve checked the plural of Ichthyosaur and it appears to be Ichthyosaurs.
No apology necessary, I know you had no intention of malice. I just wanted to be clear, otherwise I would be nervous every time I chatted with somebody in Steam! 🙂
Thanks for the plural, I’ll update the tag now.
Phillip – I d\l’d and installed as per instructions, but it doesn’t appear in “my games”.
I can start it using the batch file in the game folder, and it runs no problem, but that doesn’t sit right with me.
Is it a problem with the d\l’d file, or is it a problem with what I’m doing?
In the meantime – I’ll carry on playing———-
Phil
Hi Phil.
I had the same problem. I exited and restarted Steam 3 or 4 times before I noticed it was listed as HL1_Dopusk31, not simply Dopusk31.
Thanks for that. To be honest I didn’t even notice that, probably because I only have 2 or 3 mods installed it makes it very obvious what I have.
Doh! Bolx is right – it’s there as HL1… Phil
Hi Phil.
Glad to have helped.
way too much wandering around, with the occasionnal zombie to keep me awake, lol. I stopped playing somehwere in map “col3” out of sheer boredom
Thanks for uploading this great mod Phillip.
Thanks for the translation to the author & Phillip.
This mod is one of the best hl1 mods I played in a very long time!
It’s true the mod has some issues like crashing as soon as you die it’s annoying still it doensn’t happen often. And on the hard places you can turn on god mode if you have to.
The mapping is a masterpiece of work. The lightning, architecture dominating. I haven’t seen much of a story yet ecept the told things in the news.
I also loved to see some original hl1 monsters that were cutted out the original game.
Same like Phillip I would give it personal favourite but due to the crashings it stays on Play it now!
@megaman951: You should continue playing this. The mod is getting a lot better few levels ahead. You will find a pistol & revolver a shotgun & a rifle. The rifle is very powerful 3 shots of that and every zombie is dead.
Phillip, I cant seem to get it to appear in “MY GAMES” tab in steam. Could you or someone in this forum show me the directory path installation ?
Thanks
Look for HL1_Dopusk31 not Dopusk31
The only games that show in the steam “tab” are HL source, HL2, HL2 ep1 and ep2, I don’t see HL1_Dopusk31.. Maybe I’m extracting the file in the wrong path..I’m using 7 ZIP and OS Win7 ( if that matters, which I don’t think so ) I believe that I’m installing it wrong…Ive restarted steam several times and nothing shows..
I don’t think you will be able to play this mod since you don’t have Half-Life 1. Half-life Source won’t allow normal mods to work.
Oh, now I know whats wrong, I’ll get a copy of Half Life 1..( thought HL:Source is HL 1 ) my bad..
Thanks Phillip
I’m stuck – help wanted.
I am in the big “control room” with the big glass window,
I pressed the button that then tells me “the main door is unlock”.
I found the “nuke” —
So where’s the “main door” “cos I can’t ffffind it!
I know I have to get past the big glass window but it won’t break, and all the doors that are locked before I press the button are still locked afterwards.
Pointer anyone?
(By the way – it’s not a bad mod at all!)
Forget it – sorted!!!!!!
One thing is for sure – post on PP for help and then go back to the game and magically you find the answer.
Phillip – I don’t know how you do it !!
Have you killed the Garg or at least got past the room where it/he/she comes out from?
Help,
Im stuck on the tentacles, I turned on the power, the nitric acid and the other thing but when I press the button noting happens.
Same thing happened to me, although I thought I had missed something. Try going back to a previous save, hopefully just before or after turning the power on and trying again. That’s what worked for me. Good luck.
It didnt work, but I just noclipped anyways. thanks.
I’m at the same spot, how do I use noclip? I type it into the console, but it doesn’t do anything.
Hmm, guess I figured it out, I had to do sv_cheats 1, then find a loading screen. After that, noclip works.
Well I finished it last night and enjoyed it – I do like long mods.
I didn’t given it a “play it now” “cos there seem to be some issues with it, e.g. whenever I got into close physical combat with something, usually but not always a zombie, then the game would crash. This was easily avoided by killing from a distance, but it shouldn’t happen
Also I often found myself unable to move, wedged between a crate and a wall, say, whilst exploring, and had to load an earlier save to continue.
And there seems to be an issue with my OS (Vista64) in that sometimes the game stopped immediately after loading it, to allow Vista to warn me that “an application has changed the colour scheme” ??very strange??
But overall, a very playable mod – you should play it!
I will play it again.
Is there any video-walkthrough for this mod?
No, not that I know of. It would have to be in about 10 parts!
Ive actually liked this mod enough to warrant a walkthrough. Ill post a link here once its done.
After finishing this mod I can say I really enjoyed it. First off, in terms of length this is VERY LONG for an HL mod; maybe not the length of Residual Point/Heart of Evil/Azure sheep, but this took me a solid few hours to beat. The mapping itself was also pretty well-done, namely backtracking through an area now full of Xen wildlife, fighting ichthyosaurs with conventional weapons, and the entire “Bonus2” map. the game has several new weapons, skins and models to look at, and several Secrets (even secret maps) throughout it, giving this mod a feel similar to strider mountain. However Im not going to say its one of my favorites because it suffers from being fairly buggy (Spontaneous Game Crashes, Me running into a few invisible walls/broken textures/even going out of the map. This mod also has a problem balancing itself, I kept alternating between hitting the ammo max and having to go back to my useless crowbar countless times throughout the game. The enemies are fairly unbalanced, It seriously took no more than 3 AK rounds to kill any conventional enemy throughout the game, yet the shotgun, 9mm pistol and crossbow only got used when I was out of AK ammo, and this was on normal. Saying that, I still thought it was a fine mod, and a great way to burn 3 days, given you have the patience to get through the first 10-15 minutes.
So I finally able to play this on friday. It was a fun experience. As usual, I took small notes, and screenshots during my playthrough. The level design is good, however it is very (I mean very) repeative. I seen a lot of cloned objects. Some levels are huge, you can get lost easily when exploring around. I didn’t understand the story, but from what I have seen I can tell it’s a classic “something went wrong” scenario. There’s a huge shelter, a research base for secret experiments.
It starts slow. You wonder around, try to find where you have to go. There’s simple puzzles – some old puzzles from original Half-Life can be found. The combat is fun, although the overpowered weapons (especially the automatic rifle) make the game provide no challenge. It’s done well. I didn’t encounter any bug. In conclusion, Shelter is a solid shooter. I think it is too long for its own good, but that shouldn’t stop you from playing it. You might not like it, if you don’t like hunting zombies.
p.s. zombie idle sounds are awesome.
Wow this game is poor, this should be more like a beta realse then the full game I mean you die and the frezzez, to much wondering around and no hitnts or anything to tell you what to do or were to go, and the story line….what storyline its shit no idea were I am what my goal in the game is whats going on or anything. This game is a fail and should not be played!
Bad, bad, bad. Crazy-powered weapons (AK74 can kill something quicker than the egon gun and uses pistol ammo). No true story whatsoever, but still has plot holes (How did the main character get a nuclear briefcase?!). As for the map design, it remains strong only in the opening 30 or so minutes of the game. Past that there are many,MANY rooms that have exactly the same layout but are sparsely sprinkled with the same few props the developer decided to use, albeit in a different manner.
All that, plus a bunch of small details that’re just silly. For example, the AKs you’ll find are all bigger than an entire person. The RPG has a sight that I can’t use at all. You only fight around 6 or 7 types of enemies. I could go on, but then I’d be here all day.
I like long mods too, so I was all set to like this one. But as others have mentioned, it is very repetitive. There is some backtracking required as well, with the result that I found it quite bewildering at times trying to work out where I was. Add in a couple of bugs (the nuclear briefcase wasn’t there; the tentacle monster kill button only worked after a few save/reload cycles) and it all makes for a Maybe.
An average mod imo. I would have given it four stars, but quite a bit of the maps were just copied and pasted, so you run into tons of same looking areas. I guess that makes sense realistically maybe, but not so much in the fun mod department.
This was one of the easiest mods I’ve ever played, which isn’t a bad thing. It starts out a little hard, but once you get the assault rifle, you can kill everything in just a few hits with it. I’m not sure why the mod maker made it so strong.
There wasn’t much of a story, you just happen to find the base, and travel through it.
I had fun, but it had some issues, sometimes when you die, the mod freezes, and you have to ctrl alt delete out and close it and start it again. I also had to use noclip to pass two areas, because of glitches
So it’s not the worst mod, but not the best either.
Usually my tastes line up with Phillip’s much more closely, but this time I was just left dissatisfied. There are a number of problems holding this mod back:
Repetitive maps. So many times I was wondering if I was lost because sections of maps would just be copied and pasted, even down to where boxes where stacked.
No Distinction for Breakable/Unbreakable Objects. There was absolutely no difference between how an object that was breakable looked vs an object that was unbreakable. This was true for vent covers, all different kinds of boxes, as well as glass. There were at least 5 different cases that the path forward was blocked by an object that in all other circumstances had been unbreakable.
Clipping Issues and Crashes. I can’t count the number of times I got stuck on elevators and hills and could no longer move. Also, it wasn’t just liquid deaths that crashed the game, there were numerous other deaths that also resulted in crashes, sometimes consistently and sometimes not, but I’ve had at least 2 dozen crashes while playing this game that all resulted from dying.
Poor Difficulty Balance. The game starts out with a crap ton of wandering with absolutely no combat whatsoever. By the time you encounter your first enemy, you’ll probably have the crowbar and pistol, but instead of starting off with headcrabs and working your way up, they start you off with some super zombie that attacks faster than normal zombies, can do close to 30 – 40 damage, and takes 16 – 20 shots to kill on normal difficulty with the crowbar or pistol, even with headshots. On top of that the liquid hazards can take you from full health and shield to zero in roughly 3 seconds.
However eventually you’ll run across the assault rifle that uses the same ammo as the pistol and is almost as accurate, yet can fire around 6 shots every second and can take down those same super zombies in only 2 shots. Even Icthyosaurs go down in about 6 – 7 shots(so only a second to take them down). Within a chapter of realizing that the assault rifle actually does more damage per bullet than less, I stopped getting so much as damaged by anything short of a Gargantua. Headcrabs were the second most damaging enemy in the game overall simply because I was trying to take them down with the crowbar. I never even used the Crossbow, Gluon Gun, or Tau Cannon as there was never ever the slightest need for it.
The ending was also ridiculous. You apparently have to blow something up in order to bring an end to all the crazy crap that has been going on, but there was absolutely nothing to indicate that the object was even connected to the incident, nor was there any indication that blowing it up would accomplish anything.
The only thing that the game really had going for it were decent graphics, a few somewhat impressive puzzles/fast reaction moments, and a couple of interesting bonus levels that you could get weapons that would give you an edge to have them earlier in the game. The other interesting thing is that it looks like the game could actually be started from ANY level, as there are crowbars in almost every different map.
This is not going to be a fix for anyone that is looking forward to Black Mesa, but it’s not bad once you get past the other issues.
I’m stuck… in map Usk1 (see http://i41.tinypic.com/35iq90l.jpg)
(the map with the two outside-places)
I killed all the ennemies, but get nowhere a laoding exept from where I came from.
How can I continue to the following map?
I can’t even remember being outside. I don’t recognize that area.
Usk1 is one of the bonus maps, the only thing you can get in there is a keycard that opens some elevator style doors that has a health and suit charger inside. Maybe a rocket launcher too.
After you get that stuff, there’s nothing else to stick around for. Go back the way you came until you get to the room that had that shelf under the the vent that you had to go through to get to that map and ztart looking for your way forward from there. The next map should be something like “Tox1”
other screenshots: http://i43.tinypic.com/2pqw21f.jpg
(the one with the arrow is the previous map (dop3), the entrance of the map usk1 (where I am stuck in)
Did you kill that Ninja Assassin? I never fought any of those!
yeah, the ninja assassin goes down pretty easily. So it’s not a big deal.
Just go back to that room in the first screenshot with the arrow on it. instead of going up through that vent, go back out into the hallway and turn right. You should see the hallway blocked by some boxes or something that should be breakable. There should also be a turret gun that pops down, as well as one at the other end of the hallway back where you came from.
Sorry,
but do you mean going to the left or to the right?
Goin to the left I reach the sequence with the railroad,to the right I come to the poisen-‘room” (sorry for my bad English)
I noclipped the hole map of this image, but didn’t find any more “breakable’, nor any new place to go…
Read my reply to the first time you asked. I said go to the right. As you just pointed out, going to the left leads you back to the train area that you came from, going to the right leads to the poison room (Tox1) I might have remembered breakable boxes wrong, but that’s beside the point.
Thanx for your anwers,Grey Acuman !
“I said go to the right. (…) , going to the right leads to the poison room (Tox1)”
This means I have to go back to the poison room?
(ps: here in Belgium it’s 22 h – so I’l read your answer after the night …)
There’s also a “Bonus2” map that you access in a closed stall in one of the bathrooms you come across. It has a crane that drops a huge crate as you’re walking along below it, after that you fight some HECU and some zombies, but the cool part is when you press a button in a small enclosure, that is in an area with some zombies and a rocket launcher.
You have a helicopter come in and start firing missiles at you. It gets pretty tense if you don’t know what to do,
but if you run around to the furthest corner from the door you came into that room from as soon as you hit the button, the helicopter will actually crash itself and create a hole in the wall that leads to a longjump module unit as well as a battery and health charger.
There’s something about this mod that opens up a weird feeling for me. The first section of the modification was eerie, it was kind of terrifying actually. The long corridors, the empty rooms, details that seemingly have no meaning or baring on gameplay… but they were there. I lost this feeling after awhile as more monsters started popping up, but appeared throughout the modification, especially with certain brush-work being recycled/re-purposed, but actually made it feel more realistic in a sense.
Then comes the secrets… Not only is there secret maps/levels, but hidden little bonuses hiding in various places. Dopusk 31 rewards you for looking and searching, which is something some mods punish you for (sometimes inadvertently through bugs and glitches – getting in places you weren’t supposed to go). Saying that, I did find a couple of these things in Dopusk 31 – especially after I got the Jump Pack.
I doubt lots of the weapon models and content were created by Knazev I. S. fully, but that doesn’t detract a lot from my enjoyment.
I really liked this mod even with all its bugs.It was huge.Lots of enemies and they were a varied bunch.Lots of things/places to explore. The guy who made this must of spent a huge amount of time making this.I’m impressed.
can’t say I am enjoying this one, so much time spent roaming around looking for something to do. There is no harm in having large maps that require a degree of searching and back tracking, but it needs to be done well and I’m sorry to say that this is not the case with Dopusk31.
What we have is some very large sets with questionable scale and proportions that show no attention to detail and appear to have no function within the storyline. The authors have made little or no attempt to make the endless wandering and back tracking in any way interesting, just nothing to see or do for most of the time with repeated content and structures throughout adding to the boring factor.
The combat is also unimaginative and repetitive with the same Zombie routine repeated over and over, the whole experience is one of flogging through the maps hoping things will improve but wishing the end would come sooner then later.
On top of all this the mod has issues, big issues at that, I have lost count of the times I have crashed out of the game and there can’t be any acceptable reasons for this, surely the level of testing most have been very poor.
Boring, boring… Just empty hallways, running here and there. Bigger isnt always better, they’ve should have made smaller maps, add more puzzles or battles. And more ambient sounds, it was so quiet everywhere.
What the hell!, I also don’t have review on this one, is maybe one of the longest mods for HL, interestiing new textures, in the “Paranoia” mod style, is like playing in Black Mesa but in russia, maybe in kapustyn yard or something equivalent to the american area 51, so is cool that way, the pros is that there are my beloved New weaponery, and new scenarios and lots of combat, even a bonus cool map, try to find it!, and the really bad cons, are that is poorly iluminated, terrible lighting I mean by that and if u play it alot u can be confused ins ome paths and routes, but i’d say u can play this exotic russian piece.
Pingback: Dopusk 31
What the heck was that??
Is 90% running around fun? It’s a waste of time!
If there would be anything neat or special for the eyes.. but no!
It looks similar to “Paranoia” mod, guess some textures where used for this too as it’s also a Russian mod and maybe the same author, I don’t remember.
That’s also the best part of this mod: new textures, sounds, models.
But except that, what else is there? Hmmm..
Maybe some atmosphere, but it gets boring soon.
(I only played until map “lab01” !)
Pro’s:
-New textures, models etc.
-At first some sort of tense atmosphere
-Puzzles
Con’s:
-Often poor level design
-Long walkways
-Almost no action
-Tough zombies (faster attacking and harder to kill)
-Almost no health or ammo, weapons, enemy types
-Many dead ends & closed doors
-Story?
Ok, I finally give a mod a PF!
Why? It is a long entertaining mod with a nice amount of fighting, puzzling and a lot of exploring. Especially the last part made this mod very atmospheric. there are many areas that are pointless to advancing and many doors you can not open. This gives the world you are in a more realistic atmosphere than the usual linear “go-through-every-door-until-the-level-is-over”-feeling.
Sure, there are some bugs, but it was quite easy for me to overlook them. My playtime was AT LEAST 5 hours, and I tend to play games quite fast, so prepare for an even longer playtime!

It’s one of the best Hl mods I’ve ever played. Here are the reasons:
Pros:
– It’s pretty long.
– It has new weapons, models, sounds and textures.
– A few new enemies, and most of the old ones have been retextured.
– The game it’s balanced EXCEPT for hard difficult.
– It’s also original, has many puzzles and new stuff that I don’t want to spoil.
– It has multiple Bonus Levels which aren’t easy to find, but they’re worth the effort.
– The new flashlight gives the game a scary touch.
Cons:
– The start is a bit confusing.
– Bug: If you die with the flashlight ON, the game crashes.
– Sometimes you don’t know what to do and you might end walking in circles.
– Most of the signs and few dialogues are in Russian, but they don’t have anything to do with the storyline.
– Bug: If you pick up the blue “costume” on the first levels, then you won’t be able to pick up any Kevlar vests.
Neutral:
– The total ammount of ammo you can carry has been decreased, but the damage has been raised.
– The normal zombies are faster and stronger. They can take up to 7 glock headshots, and killing them with crowbar it’s quite hard.
– Most of the enemies now use HD textures (except soldiers). Bullsquid uses the “Mr. Friendly” skin, and zombies have new skins.
– All weapons use new skins, some of them from HL2. It also includes a new AK-47.
Hints:
– Important: A bullet from the AK-47 deals 4-5 times more damage that one from the pistol, but it’s a bit innacurate. Use the pistol only in long range.
– Don’t kill the few guards you meet, they can save you a lot of ammo.
– Don’t try to kill normal zombies with the crowbar, you can only hit them once before they attack you ( Believe me, I tried maaaaany times). Their attack it’s really strong and fast, so use the AK-47 or, if you can’t, the shotgun instead.
– Playing on hard difficulty it’s really HARD. You should search for the secret areas to get more supplies/weapons/ammo.
– Important: Headshots are a great way to save ammo.
– You’d rather kill Bullsquids with your trusty crowbar.
– Excluding your cool RPG, the ammo you can find and carry for the explosives it’s very limited,so don’t waste them.
– Sometimes it’s better to trigger an automatic gun and let it do the dirty job before you destroy them.
Briefing:
– Duration: 5/5 ==> About 6 hours in hard, 4-5 in easy or medium.
– Difficulty: 5/5 ==> It suits good for the one you choose.
– Originality: 10/5 ==> New weapons, models, enemies, puzzles…
– Stability: 4/5 ==> Just a couple of bugs, it isn’t so bad.

Verry good MOD.
BUT!!!
WARNING: MOD came with an UNINSTALL.EXE in the Dopusk31 folder {detected by SAS} Trojan.Agent/Gen-Singlon
The mod was working under steam when I installed it on 2019-10-06, but after the HL update of 2019-10-08, its not possible anymore to begin a new game or load the previously saved games. It works under HL 1.1.1.0 tho, and the saved games files are compatible.
