Crossfire. Half-Life’s most well-known deathmatch map, and for good reason. Its iconic circular layout in one half, the open field and nuclear bunker in the other. This Test Tube asked mappers to use Crossfire’s layout to build their own single player map.
A record 30 maps were submitted! Here they are, enjoy!

Some maps were okay, some were bad, but nothing to really speak about.
I strongly recommend this Map Labs entry.
I think it’s the one with the highest amount of entries amongst them all (maybe i’m wrong about that!) and a fair majority of them were pretty amazing. In fact, there are so many maps, that I decided to give up on judging each, singular one altogether, but I gotta say…
…Almost all of them were very fun to play or just experience. This competition’s theme is genius and some of the mapmakers were really creative with it.
There are maps that are typical shootouts and then, there are slower, more atmospheric maps – but a lot of them are united by the fact, that when playing through those, you really forget that it’s just HL1’s Crossfire.
This one’s a must play!
So here we have -so far- the biggest and longest map labs with 30 power entries.
So, as there were so many entries, I couldn’t review every one of them, and instead I’ll judge this one as a whole.
I was almost tempted to give this one a Personal Favorite recommendation but I won’t because despite most entries being nicely done, without too many technical glitches, some were just faulty and frustrating, like “Nightfire” the one where you have to defend that bunker at night, which it was a cool concept but super faulty and badly done with the triggers, and besides with totally faulty auto-saves, auto-loads, that once you were about to start the 4th wave the whole entry crashed to desktop. So I don’t want to ruin the recommendation just because of this one, but as there were many, that just one entry was faulty it just feels like almost ruined the gaining experience as a whole.
I agree with the 3 winners and the honorable mentions, as those entries ooze quality and are great as a gaming experience.
Cold Hard Steele 2 was a great winner, and I can only hope this one becomes a fully stand-alone title on its own, as the 3rd part (present in part 2 map-labs) is cool indeed!
The Travelers also was an amazing 2nd place, and despite I got confused at first, I grasped its dynamics was a great experience developed into a beautiful map scenario.
Little Mystery was a cute map with a sweet layout that was also pretty enjoyable and funny at the same time.
I also totally loved “Combine Realignment of Synthetic Societal Functions. Isolate. Respond. Expose.” as it was a pretty cool concept and also a realistic one by limiting the arsenal available and the class of CMB soldier you may complete the cool mission with it, I just love realistic combat in HL2 and so I truly enjoyed this one. And to me, this could perfectly be the winner.
Also loved “SUPERFIRE” and its whole Miami Vice 80s concept, was a cool shooter with really cool gameplay, and enjoyable shootouts.
“The Winston Parable” was cool and fun to play as the triggers worked fine and it was totally out of the box.
In conclusion, I believe this map lab is worthy to play because it is enjoyable and pretty fun, also it is a cool proof that multi-player maps, not necessarily are just suitable to be converted on SP shooting arenas. I guess this map lab proves that also these cool maps can adapt themselves to many enjoyable gameplay dynamics inside the HL2 universe.
Also, I guess this one is close to my beloved and favorite HL2 mod ever which is CSS-Hardwired, where you can play in the fantastic CSS maps, solo, as SP against CMB in pretty realistic combat scenarios.
So yeah, this map lab is a definitely Must Play.
