Jim’s Rules Of Half Life 2 Mapping

For those not following Jim Partridge’s RTSL livestream event, called Critical Jim, he plays and dissects a different mod every month.

He normally has a guest to throw and crush ideas around.

Here are his starting mapping rules. Don’t be surprised if they get added to and/or updated as he finds new elements to discuss.

Upcoming text Interview with Shokunin, the creator of Transmissions: Element 120.

Shokunin and I were planning on having an audio interview but for various reasons that’s no longer possible.

We have however agreed to do a text interview and although I have plenty of questions I want to ask, I thought RTSL readers might also like to suggest some questions.

Please post your questions as comments below.

I make no guarantee that I will include though.

I will be sending the list of questions on Monday, so you don’t have long to post them.

Poll Question 311 – Which method of SP release would you prefer?

I’m a binge viewer. There, I said it. I love watching a whole sason of episodes from TV shows in one weekend.

It’s an interesting topic in itself, from a number of angles, but it got me thinking about how I would feel if a single player game were releases in chapters like a TV show.

Let me clarify a few points:
1. No, I’m not talking about episodes in the sense of Episode One and Two.
2. I’m not even thinking specifically of a Half-Life game.

The Science Behind Half-Life: Game Names

The idea of an article about the science behind some aspects of the Half-Life games popped into my head when I was listening to a physics podcast. It was talking about Zero-Point Energy and of course I immediately recognized the term.

I performed a quick search to see if somebody else had already written something and was initially disappointed to find somebody had. However, after scanning it and seeing the author say that the “Zero Point Energy” was just “a pointless quasi-scientific name that has no serious grounding in genuine physics”, I decided I would write my own.

Poll Question 310 – How important is how long a release took to make?

This morning, I posted a request on TWHL.info (the best GoldSource mapping community around) asking for people to let me know which maps and mods I should add to the site (expect the next few months to be GoldSource-rich with new content!)

Somebody suggested a map of theirs only to find out I had already added it. The reviews were not glowing but he accepted it with humility. Here is what he said “Unfortunately it was a rushed map( done in about a week), and most of the members there don’t know that so they judge accordingly. I don’t feel bad about that, such good criticism helps you discover your weaknesses.”

The fact it was made in such a short space of time, shouldn’t have anything to do with a review, but the reality is that it probably does. At least in my opinion.

Sam Combs’ Notes from Critical Jim Video

When I suggested the idea of level design critique videos to Jim, it was always with the hope of having the author benefit from Jim’s eye for detail.

After the first video, for Station 51 by Sam Combs, was streamed and made available on the RTSL YouTube channel, the response from the community was overwhelmingly positive.

Sam published his response to the video on his Tumblr blog and has kindly allowed me to republish it here.

So, here we are. Spring is in the air, daylight is getting longer.

Some of you, me included, may have a few days off from work or study, so that’s always cool.

So many new events! What’s going on?

You’ve probably noticed in the last month or so, 3 new events have been announced. If not, where have you been?

Hopefully, you are as excited about them as I am. They allow you to play mods that you might have missed.

Each event has its own focus and objective and none will overlap.

I’m hoping for plenty of reader participation and I’d like to draw your attention to the Event Reviewers Giveaway post.

However, what you may have noticed is that they all use previously released or updated quite well-known mods.

Don’t worry, I will very soon begin to run some time-limited events that aim to update those really old mods or the mods that have hardly any details, including working links. I will also start adding recently released mods that are missing from the site.

My aim is to have lots of events running at the same time, maybe even EVERY weekend.

There’s also a chance I will be able to do some limited streaming on Thursday evenings.

We hope to have a monthly Video Submission Challenge, but we are still playing with that idea.

If you are a regular reader and would like to run your own event or just suggest an idea for one, please let me know.
